Psych Appeal - GateWorld Talks with Claire Rankin

Dr. Kate Heightmeyer has touched the hearts of many Atlantis fans with her soft-spoken words of wisdom and genuine care for expedition members. Her tragic death in this season's "Doppelganger" sent a wave of shock and sadness through fandom, likely as director Robert C. Cooper intended.

Now GateWorld sits down for an intimate, one-on-one discussion with her portrayer, Claire Rankin, who reveals that she was just as surprised as everyone else!

Claire discusses adopting the standards of real-life psychologists while playing Heightmeyer, and reveals that the very nature of the character -- a shrink -- often prevented viewers from learning more about her. She talks about the struggle of being forced to partake in the deception of the Wraith Michael, and lends her thoughts on what it means to be truly beautiful.

DOCTOR WHO SEASON FOUR AND THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES COMING TO SCI FI CHANNEL IN APRIL

Published: February 4, 2008

SCI FI Channel has acquired the fourth season of People's Choice Award-nominated Doctor Who and the phenomenally popular series' new spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures from BBC Worldwide America. Both series are slated to premier on SCI FI in April 2008.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is written and produced by the same creative team behind Doctor Who, including multi-award winning writer Russell T. Davies. Having traveled the universe with The Doctor, Sarah Jane is used to alien encounters. Accompanied by her new young friends Maria, Luke and Clyde, she becomes embroiled in an offbeat world of mystery and danger.

In season four of Doctor Who, David Tennant reprises his role as the tenth Timelord. For his latest adventures he is joined by a brand new companion, Donna Noble, played by award-winning actress Catherine Tate (The Catherine Tate Show, BBC AMERICA) who appeared as 'the runaway bride' in the previous season. 'Martha Jones,' played by Freema Agyeman, the Doctor's most recent companion, who had a dramatic role last season's finale, makes a triumphant return in the middle of season four.

"We are excited to have Doctor Who back on SCI FI for its 4th season," said Chris Regina, Vice President of Programming, SCI FI Channel. "It's an exciting franchise that continues to reinvent itself for new generations of viewers. The youthful appeal of The Sarah Jane Adventures will no doubt attract even younger new
viewers."

Candace Carlisle, EVP Sales and Co-productions, BBC Worldwide Americas commented, "The imagination of Russell and the rest of the production team in Cardiff who have produced these two incredible shows is outstanding. We are so pleased that the loyal fans of the SCI FI Channel will be able to meet a whole new range of characters and aliens that are intrinsically linked to the Doctor's history. Both 'Sarah Jane Adventures' and the new season of 'Doctor Who' are jam packed with some of the most creative storylines ever produced by the BBC's brilliant team."

The third season of the new Doctor Who averaged 1.3 million weekly viewers on SCI FI.

The deals were brokered by Lisa Hofer, Vice President of Co-Production & Sales, BBC Worldwide Americas. Executive Producers for The Sarah Jane Adventures are Russell T Davies, Head of Drama, BBC Wales, Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson. The series producer is Matthew Bouch. Doctor Who season four is produced by Phil Collinson; Executive Producers are Julie Gardner and Russell T Davies. Doctor Who season four is a BBC production in association with CBC.

The Movie Network and Movie Central commission cutting-edge new original drama series Sanctuary

TORONTO, Feb. 4 /CNW/ - Astral Media's The Movie Network (eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (western Canada) have commissioned 13-episodes of one of the first television series ever to be conceived from an Internet-based concept. Initially developed as eight broadcast-quality webisodes from the creative talent behind Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, Sanctuary is an original drama series that is also the first to be shot entirely on green screen.

Commissioned by and airing on The Movie Network and Movie Central, the series has also been green lit by the SCI FI Channel in the U.S. which will broadcast the series day and date with the Canadian broadcasters in fall 2008.

Using next-generation visual effects through 3-D green-screen technology, the series is set in a mysterious and supernatural world and follows the adventures of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), her reluctant protégé Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) and her fearless and somewhat reckless daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup), as they study and try to help the strange, terrifying and monstrous creatures that populate their world.

"We are thrilled to be a part of this true multi-platform project that is breaking new ground on numerous fronts - from its unique conception to its distinctive graphic novel look and feel this series will be the first of its kind on Canadian television," said Michelle Marion, Director, Canadian Independent Production, The Movie Network. "Together with Sanctuary's powerfully likeable characters, rich and compelling storytelling and dramatic visual style, our subscribers will have access to a series unlike anything seen before on television and one that has already built a huge following online."

Currently in production by Vancouver-based Stage 3 Media Inc. and distributed by Tricon Films and Television, the series will be shot in high definition and will be helmed by the creative team responsible for Sanctuary, including creator and executive producer Damian Kindler (Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis), executive
producer and lead actor Amanda Tapping (Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis), executive producer and director Martin Wood (Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis), executive producer and writer Sam Egan (Jeremiah, The Outer Limits); and executive producer John Smith (Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis).

"Movie Central subscribers love the Stargate franchise, and with many of the same members of the strong creative team from Stargate involved in this new sci-fi production, we are confident that Sanctuary will really appeal to our audience," said Erica Benson, Vice President Programming, Movie Central. "We're also proud to be
supporting a technologically innovative western-Canadian production - that's a win-win for both our partners and our subscribers."

"The Movie Network and Movie Central are the perfect fit for Sanctuary. These Canadian networks championed this project from the beginning and recognized Sanctuary as one of the most ambitious home-grown Canadian projects to date. We couldn't be more thrilled about working together and bringing this extraordinary series to the channels' subscribers," said Carrie Mudd, Vice President, International Sales & Development, Tricon Films & Television.
