Ed Quinn Talks About Changes For 'Eureka' on S3
Wednesday, 06 August 2008
By Kenn Gold, Jim Iaccino & Jennifer Iaccino
Ed Quinn plays Nathan Stark in SCI FI Channel’s Eureka, the story about the town inhabited by geniuses. Nathan, who was brought in after the series pilot to run Global Dynamics has had an interesting change in his character during the first two seasons, and it looks like we will get to see more of his interactions with Sheriff Carter for season 3. The network has also shown it’s faith in the series by giving it a 21 episode order this year (Season 1 was 12 episodes and Season 2 was 13). Eight episodes will be shown first, then an additional 13 will air after a hiatus.
Ed recently stopped by “The Two Doctors” radio show to discuss the new direction that the show will be taking this season, as well as what it means for the cast and crew to have a longer season.
Eureka is such an amazing show and you have to be able to speak the technical lingo. But what is the genre that you are really into when it comes to acting?

Eureka is such an amazing show and you have to be able to speak the technical lingo. But what is the genre that you are really into when it comes to acting?
Ed Quinn> The darker it can be, or the lighter. I’d really rather be doing dark comedy. I actually love broad comedy. Comedy is really fun because you are trying to tell a real story, but you have the added pressure of trying to do big jokes and get big reversals. The way you work with a cast, Colin and I do a pretty good job of setting each other up. If Stark has a great one line or Colin has a great one liner, it’s great to be able to hit the joke. But what you don’t realize sometimes as an audience member is that what set the joke up is the other guy. Stark ends up ends up getting a whole lot of great one liners on the show, and that’s because Colin Ferguson is such a talented comedian, he knows exactly how to set up. He throws me the softball and I can hit it out of the park. I really do love that, but besides that though, when I watch television I tend to like really, really dark complex dramas. My favorite shows from back in the day are Sopranos and West Wing. Right now Dexter is just such a phenomenal show. That first season of Friday Night Lights was just as good a first season of television as you could find. Those are the kind of shows that really get me excited. It sounds like both ends of the spectrum, but those are the two things that I really look for.

Ron Perlman: Red heat
Ron Perlman is back in action as the big, cranky red demon in Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and it’s about time. The long-awaited sequel reunites Perlman with writer-director Guillermo del Toro, and pits our hero against Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), a baddie with a fiendish plot to rule Earth from above and below. Ian Spelling recently spoke with Perlman about The Golden Army and his other upcoming sci-fi and horror projects, including The Mutant Chronicles, Bunraku and – just possibly - The Hobbit.

It was great to see Roy Dotrice in Hellboy II…
There are two guys in the world I call “Pops”. Roy is one of them, because he played Father during my old Beauty and the Beast days. And one is John Hurt, because he plays Father in the Hellboy series. They were both on this movie, though I had nothing to do with either of them.
I was thrilled Guillermo had them come in. I considered it a personal gift because they’re two of the most beautiful men I’ve ever worked with or known in life. Roy and I didn’t have any scenes together in Hellboy II, but we intersected in Budapest and we went out and had a lot of dinners and a really good time. I passed over a lot of my team to him, the people who’d worked closely with me on make-up, wardrobe, etc. So he got treated in high fashion once he started work.

The Den Of Geek interview: Joe Morton
On the eve of season 3 of Eureka, Joe Morton talks with us about Terminator 2, Brother From Another Planet and hyperventilating...
Martin Anderson
Joe Morton is an accomplished theatre and film actor well known to science-fiction fans for his starring role in John Sayles' cult The Brother From Another Planet. He later went on to appear as Miles Dyson in James Cameron's smash-hit Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and in the John Woo sci-fi actioner Pay Check, based on a Philip K. Dick short story.
Morton is about to begin his third season as resourceful tinkerer Henry Deacon in Eureka (UK: 'A Town Called Eureka'), and we were lucky enough to catch up with him late last week just before he headed off to Comicon in San Diego...
What have you discovered about Henry since you first gave the part some shape? Something that maybe surprised you when you first came across it…?
Is there enough development in season three to keep you fresh and interested in the role?

A nice surprise was that he had a sort of dark past, and part of that past was Kim. And that’s something, I think, that I hadn’t really expected. When that storyline came along, it sort of gave me another facet through which to see who Henry was, in terms of how he loves and how deeply he loves, etc…
Is there enough development in season three to keep you fresh and interested in the role?
Oh yeah! Because Henry is the go-to guy, and because his point-of-view – for the most part – is the ‘silver lining’, then all things are possible [laughs]...
