Stargate Atlantis - Saying Goodbye to Stargate Atlantis

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for September 18, 2008:

September 18, 2008: Saying Goodbye to SGA, Looking Forward to SGU

Jason Momoa (Ronon Dex), Sharon Taylor (Amelia Banks) and Robert Picardo (Richard Woolsey)

...Well, yesterday was the final day of shooting for many of our regular and recurring actors: Rachel Luttrell, Jewel Staite, Jason Momoa, David Hewlett, Kavan Smith, Sharon Taylor, and Chuck Campbell. Today, marks Bob Picardo last day with us. Joe Flanigan heads to Vegas next week where he will complete filming on Vegas, and the series, alongside guest stars Neil Jackson, Steve Schirripa (The Soprano's Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri), and Frank Vincent (The Soprano's Frank Leotardo). A bittersweet time for all; me in particular. Bitter in that it's been a great five years and I will sincerely miss the show and the many wonderful people who made it all happen. Sweet in that I like to sleep in.

1st AD Alex Pappas, writers Alan McCullough and Carl Binder

To those of you commenting on yesterday's video and those who skipped the video because they thought it would be depressing - the video was intended to be tongue in cheek. Terry is not really packing up my office (although the part about her wanting to move in is true). While I will be cleaning up, I won't be moving out. Paul and I have a movie to write. As for our involvement in SGU [Stargate: Universe] - still too early to say anything specific regarding our participation in the spin-off, but I'm sure we'll all be contributing in some capacity.

Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett)

Speaking of SGU, I notice that much of the reaction to the character breakdowns has been negative. While I respect everyone's right to express their opinions, I'd suggest holding off on making a final decision on the show until you've actually seen it. Last week, Brad pitched us the series and its first five episodes and, I have to say, it's a far cry from the shallow confection many fans are imagining. In
fact, in many ways, it's a much more cerebral and mature addition to the franchise. While firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe definitely strikes out in an exciting new direction. It's a series that will delight veteran fans, but also appeal to newcomers who may not necessarily know the difference between an Alteran and an Asuran. In spite of what the indicators may
suggest, this will definitely not be a Voyager 90210. The assortment of characters that make up the character breakdown are certainly an atypical collection of heroes, far-removed from the skilled likes of Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, John Sheppard, and Rodney McKay - but there's a damn good reason for that. Can't say more but suffice it to say I have a feeling this show will pleasantly surprise a lot of people...

Prepping for surgery on the mystery patient

August 22, 2008: Firstlies through Eightlies…

First, let me start off today's entry by saying if you have any questions about the new spin-off, Stargate: Universe, I'm not the person to ask. Hell, I didn't even know the ship was named Destiny until I read it in the press release this morning. What I do know, however, is that with Brad and Rob at the helm (you may know them from such works as Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis) it's sure to be a quality show.

Secondly, to all those of you seeking clarification, let me emphasize what I wrote in yesterday`s entry. Team Atlantis - Paul, Carl, Martin, Alan, and myself - was hopeful that, when all was said and done, the show would get that elusive sixth year pick-up. I can assure you that had we received the go-ahead, we would have been both thrilled and thankful to be producing a season six. Yes, we're disappointed. And,
yes, had the order come in for both shows, you can be damn sure we would have found a way to make it work. In the end, even though it didn`t pan out, there is still plenty of Stargate to look forward to in the near future.

Thirdly, thanks for the all-around well-wishes. I was surprised to discover that quite a few members of the cast and crew read this blog and they'll surely appreciate your kind words.

Fourthly, what does the future hold for Paul and I? Well, an Atlantis movie for one. It's still in the very early planning stages but it will be big and chock full of great character moments. Beyond that - it's too early to tell.

Emergency surgery

Seventhly, lost in all the recent discussion is actress Sharon Taylor's impending visit. Feel free to include questions for Sharon (a.k.a. Gate Technician Amelia Banks) amid the understandable venting.

Eighthly, I empathize with the fans. I realize that many, MANY, MANY of you are upset and as long as you have something to say, I'm willing to listen. So if you're taking the time to post your thoughts on recent developments, then know that the least I can do is take the time to read them and hit the "Approve" button.

I took some great shots on set today that I'll be posting in tomorrow's entry. Hopefully, they'll put a smile on some of your faces. In the meantime, enjoy tonight's episode, The Shrine, as well as a few snaps from a couple of the episodes we happen to be shooting…

Stargate Atlantis - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog Update Aug 17 '08 - Questions for Sharon Taylor?

August 17, 2008: Upcoming Guests, Pooch Pics, and The Weird Food Purchase of the Day

Hope you've all finished up this month's fantasy book of the month club pick, The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden, because I'll be weighing in with my thoughts tomorrow. I'll also be collecting questions for author Catherynne M. Valente who will be dropping by later in the week. This one was a very unique and interesting read. I look forward to checking out your comments.

Speaking of dropping by later in the week… You first knew her as replicator technician, then as human technician, and now as fab-haired recurring gate tech Amelia Banks on Stargate Atlantis. Next weekend-ish, actress Sharon Taylor will be dropping by to field your questions about her growing role on the series. What's in store for Amelia in season 5? The answers may surprise. I'll be taking questions for Sharon starting on Wednesday.

Well, the early numbers for Ghost in the Machine come in tomorrow afternoon and I predict our hitherto consistently upticking numbers take a bit of a hit as we went up against the Olympics last Friday night. Alas, not even the combined forces of Earth's battle cruisers and the city of the Ancients are a match for the triple jump and women's sabre. Hey, did you catch Tajikistan win the bronze in judo? No, neither did I...

Stargate Atlantis - Stargate Planet: Sharon Taylor Interview

A brief excerpt:

Interview with Sharon Taylor

Stargate-Planet, June 2008

Sharon Taylor is a Simon Fraser University Alumni and on Stargate Atlantis we know her as a female gate technician. We're grateful that despite a busy schedule Ms. Taylor took into consideration to answer a few career related questions for our German website visitors.

S-P.de: Did you audition for the role of the female gate technician and for other characters on Stargate Atlantis as well? How was your audition? How did you prepare for it?

ST: I first auditioned for the role of "Replicator Technician" in the beginning of season 4, and I got the part! In order to prepare for the audition, I went online to various Stargate websites and researched Replicators. A few months later, my agent called and said that I was being brought back to the show to play a "Female Technician" role, and I was super happy to be asked back. When I read the script and saw that my new character worked in the control room of Atlantis I was thrilled!

S-P.de: Joe Mallozzi announced in his blog that your character now has a name - Amelia Banks. Does it make a difference if a character has a name or is only listed as "Technician"? Do you now have a parking lot and a trailer with your name on it when you're filming?

ST: When I was invited back for Season 5 to play the "Female Technician" again, I saw in the script that I had been given a name, Amelia Banks. Having a name didn't change the way I played the character, but it sure felt nice to have a name. No, I don't have a parking spot with my name on it (that's funny), and I'm still in the same trailer space that I was in before. Just the character name on the door has changed.

Stargate Atlantis - NEW Season 5 Production Photos May 27 '08

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for May 27, 2008:

May 27, 2008: Man Wills Fortune to Dog. Dog Blows it all on Coke and Whores.

Apparently, I've been drafted by the Atlantis 100th Episode Party Planning Committee to help in the planning of, you guessed it, the Atlantis 100th Episode Party. Lawren informed me that, in the coming weeks, I'll be expected to take part in the "strategic imaginings" for the big event. Hmmm. To be honest, I'm not really sure what I'll be able to add to the big prep session as my planning skills are better suited to story outlines, menu selections, and daring jungle escapes. Still, just off the top of my head, here are a few suggestions:

**snippity doo-dah**

Daniella Alonso as Katana

Over the weekend, I promised to give you all the scoop on Katana, the Traveler who will be making her first appearance in the mid-season two-parter. Well, I'm pleased to tell you that Daniella Alonso has been cast in the role. Those of you not familiar with Daniella's work may want to check out her 11-episode arc in season two of Friday Night Lights. She was excellent in FNL and is doing a wonderful job for us on The Lost Tribe.

Sharon Taylor (Amelia Banks) and David Nykl (Radek Zelenka)

Another introduction of sorts and one that's long overdue. Sharon Taylor plays one of our gate technicians on Stargate: Atlantis. She first caught our eye playing the role of a replicator in the episode Lifeline. She had such a unique look that we brought her back as a real, flesh and blood member of the expedition. A line here, a line there, and then it was only a matter of time before something else struck us about Sharon. She's damn good. We continued to bring her back, increased her face-time, and, as a true indication that she had really made it, finally gave her character a name: Amelia Banks. And the fact that Sharon is a black belt kick boxer and could probably kick all of our asses had nothing to do with it.

By the way, great feedback on The Android's Dream. Keep it coming and make sure you get your questions in before mid-day Wednesday when I'll be sending them Mr. Scalzi's way. As for what's been said so far:

Mailbag returns tomorrow.

Probably.
