Behind the Scenes: Continuum (Pt. 2)

July 16, 2008 (General)

Frostbite, Polar Bears and frozen equipment – just three of the challenges that faced director of photography Peter Woeste during the filming of Continuum!

A brief excerpt:

“The Arctic shoot wasn’t the only thing that it was a delight to be involved with,” he [Peter Woeste] says. “The film opens on the freighter, in 1939 in the mid-Atlantic. Even though we were shooting in Vancouver, it was difficult to find a period ship that we could shoot on, So we built all the interior of the ship on a stage. It would have been a normal set, but we decided that it was a ship on the ocean and ships tip back and forth. So we decided that we would tip this entire set – and it was huge, it was two or three stories built on the biggest stage that we have.”

The gimbled ship set was the most ambitious that the Stargate team had ever put together, and they were rightly proud of their achievement. Once the initial scenes were filmed, the set was then frozen to simulate its icy resting place, which is when our heroes Cameron Mitchell, Daniel Jackson and Sam Carter enter the fray. For Woeste, filming these scenes presented one gigantic problem...

Peter Woeste describes the challenges of filming on Stargate SG-1’s most expensive ‘set’ yet – a fully operational US Navy nuclear submarine!

A brief excerpt:

Director of photography Peter Woeste has filmed in a lot of interesting places during his decades in the business, including plenty of locations with aspects of the US military. But never, until the filming of Continuum, had he filmed on an operational nuclear submarine. Before the Stargate: Continuum crew could even get aboard the sub, naturally it had to surface – and the opportunity to film a sub punching through the arctic ice wasn’t one that either Martin Wood or Peter Woeste would willingly pass up.

“The shot that we were really looking for, something that was unattainable anywhere else, was that we wanted to tie the sub coming out from under the ice in with our actors,” Woeste explains. “We wanted them in the same shot; so that there was no doubt that we were there. Otherwise we could have done it all with VFX!”

Next, Peter Woeste discusses the dangers the crew encountered whilst filming on the ice itself – including frostbite and Polar bears!

Stargate: Continuum - MGM Stargate - NEW Photos June 13 '08

The MGM Stargate site has 10 NEW publicity stills from Stargate: Continuum on June 13 '08. Some of these photos are new to the MGM Stargate site only (they have been previously provided, either by Andreas at GateWorld Forum [Thank YOU, Andreas], or by the MySpace Stargate Central Command or the Facebook Stargate Official Fanpage sites).

Oh -- and some of the "darker" photos I tried to brighten a bit, because they were really, really hard to see (of course, could be my old eyesight only).

Please follow the links (below) for the full-size, high-resolution format of these photos.
