August 30, 2008: Actress Sharon Taylor Answers Your Questions and We Complete Our Tour of Stage 5.
With the end of production on Stargate Atlantis less than a month away, I'm going to do my best to introduce you all to some of the amazing unsung heroes who have worked very hard behind the scenes these many years. They may not get the all-expenses-paid invites to the overseas conventions but that doesn't mean that their contribution to the success of the show was no less important than the likes of the series regulars, writers, or producers. Over the past couple of months, you got to know the likes of VFX Supervisor Mark Savela, Director of Photography Jim Menard. In the coming days, it'll be Props Master Evil Kenny Gibbs and Director Andy Mikita. Among the many others on my "to pester" list: Composer Joel Goldsmith, Stunt Coordinator James Bam Bam Bamford, Director Will Waring, Playback Supervisor Krista McLean, SPFX Supervisor Wray Douglas, Costume Designer Valerie Halverson, Production Designer James Robbins, and many others. Can't promise they'll all have the time to drop by, but it doesn't hurt to ask - or apply extreme pressure if they prove reluctant (Yes, I'm talking about you, Will.).
As for today, I'm happy to turn this blog over to actress Sharon Taylor who went from a "blink and you'll miss her" appearance as a replicator in Progeny to a recurring role as gate technician Amelia Banks...

Stargate SG-1 - GateWorld: SG-1 cast remembers Davis
At GateWorld:

SG-1 cast remembers Davis
SATURDAY, AUGUST 30 (ACTORS)
Happy memories of late actor Don S. Davis were shared at Creation Entertainment's Chicago Stargate convention.
A brief excerpt:
Cast and crew of both Stargate series, along with millions of fans worldwide, were shocked to learn of the passing of veteran actor Don S. Davis earlier this summer. The man who brought to life the character of General George Hammond clearly had an effect on the people who met him -- from cast members who worked alongside him for years to people whose lives he touched just in passing.
Creation Entertainment's Official Stargate convention, held August 22-24 at Chicago's Wyndham O'Hare hotel, was dedicated to the actor's memory. Davis had originally been scheduled to be a guest there prior to his untimely passing. Attendees of the con who had met Davis were offered a chance to take the stage themselves briefly Friday afternoon to share their memories of the late actor. Many of the attending celebrities also mentioned him during their time on-stage...
Stick with GateWorld for more updates from Creation's Chicago event in the days to come! Interviews with Alexis Cruz, Tony Amendola and a brand-new sit-down with Michael Shanks are coming soon. And keep it locked to GateWorld as we bring you more reactions from Atlantis cast members on the cancellation of the series.

LAS VEGAS - After a decade at the final frontier, Star Trek: The Experience is going where no Las Vegas Strip attraction wants to go.
With a decommissioning ceremony — as befits any great vessel — the exhibit and its replica of the starship Enterprise are closing Monday.
Thousands of trekkies are "beaming up" from across the United Federation of Planets, er, the United States and around the world one last time, according to exhibit spokesman Chad Boutte...

Stargate Atlantis - Los Angeles Times: Opening a black hole on 'Stargate Atlantis'
From the Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles, CA):

Michael Shanks guest stars in 'First Contact' scheduled to air Friday, Sept. 26 at 10pm on the SciFi Channel
Opening a black hole on 'Stargate Atlantis'
Sci Fi Channel cancels swashbuckling spinoff, but a new series, 'Universe,' is on the event horizon in 2009.
By David Tischman, Special to The Times
August 31, 2008
THE Sci Fi Channel canceled "Stargate Atlantis" this month, less than halfway through its fifth season. And indeed, the episodes have been disappointing so far, with no new plot twists to enhance the show's wormhole-jumping science fiction mythology. The big cast change -- adding "Star Trek: Voyager's" Robert Picardo as the city's new administrator -- hit with all the power of a phaser set on Blah.
But science fiction fans are loyal, even when our heroes are treading water -- the box office receipts for "Revenge of the Sith" prove that -- and the next batch of episodes in what is now "Atlantis' " final season do get better. Much better. In fact, the midseason two-part finale (airing at the end of September), features a very smart (very big) surprise...
Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa), Lt. Col. John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) from 'The Queen,' scheduled to air Friday, Sept. 12 at 10pm on the SciFi Channel.
...Simply put, "Stargate Atlantis" is the best comic book television we have; not as well written as "Heroes," but with more swashbuckling fun -- and with the American can-do attitude of a space-faring "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (an artifact that could possibly be found in the Pegasus Galaxy).
The new episodes of "Atlantis" continue to air until the end of 2008, with a finale set for the series' 100th episode. The show will live on in syndication, and in original DVD movies (as "SG-1" has done successfully). A new "Stargate" series, "Stargate Universe," with new characters, has been announced, and is set to premiere sometime in 2009.
In that new series, the cast is trapped on a ship at the edge of the galaxy, with no way to get back to Earth. That sounds a lot like "Star Trek: Voyager" -- the least popular of all the "Star Trek" spin-offs -- which spent seven seasons replaying the tragic notion that the crew was lost in space, unable to reach home. But sci-fi fans know how that turned out. Just ask Robert Picardo.
Stargate Atlantis' 'Inquisition' is scheduled to air Friday, October 24 at its new time, 9pm, on the SciFi Channel (US).

Stargate SG1 / Atlantis - Video: Tour of Stage 5

August 29, 2008: We're #1, Ducking the Mix, Honk! Honk!, and a Video Tour of Stage 5, Part 1.
Scene from the big Ronon vs. house cat battle sequence in episode #20.
We're #1! Well, we were anyway. The #1 pirated show on BitTorrent last week, beating out the likes of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, Psych, and Mad Men, and up from #6 the previous week. No actual hard numbers provided in the report, but one can't help but wonder whether all those illegal downloads have been hurting the show's ratings. The 30% bump Atlantis receives from the Live+7 numbers suggests that our viewers are tech-savvy (not all that surprising considering they are SF fans) and make use of alternate viewing resources such as Tivo, DVR, iTunes and BitTorrent. Exactly how this affected the show's ratings is debatable and, at this point, of little consequence, but I just thought I'd mention it.
Meanwhile, we've still got a show to produce. Identity is shooting, Enemy at the Gate is prepping, and various cuts and mixes abound...
Marty G., taking a page from Homer Simpson's playbook, settles in to watch a mix.
...Hey, Stephen Dobyns, author of The Church of Dead Girls, contacted me yesterday. Apparently, he was away from his email all week, just got back, and is eager to answer your questions. So if you have questions for Stephen, let's see `em. Antisocialbutteflie - I've got yours.
