Across The Universe
November 5, 2008 (General)
Robert C. Cooper, co-creator of Stargate Universe, gives us an update on the progress of the franchise's latest series.
As fans slowly get over the news that Stargate Atlantis will not be continuing to air for a sixth season, behind the scenes the wheels are beginning to turn on the franchise's third live-action series. Entitled Stargate Universe, the show will follow the fortunes of a group of Stargate Command personnel who unexpectedly find themselves manning an Ancient ship, the Destiny, which is on a mission to the far reaches of the galaxy.
With the concept green-lit for production, co-creators Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright are hard at work on fleshing out the series before it goes before the camera. There's tons to do, but Cooper found enough time to give us an update on the exciting progress of Stargate Universe.

"We’re writing the premiere episode," he confirms. "Brad and myself are spinning that story, and we’re coming up with new episodes for the first half of the season as well. We're also in the preliminary casting process, and designing the sets and looking for key crew members – it’s full steam ahead right now. Our target is to start shooting early February and be on the air in July of ’09."

Q&A: Butcher On Dresden Comic
Jim Butcher, the best-selling author of the Dresden Files series of novels, told SCI FI Wire that he's adapted his franchise, about wizard-for-hire Harry Dresden, into a graphic novel, The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle.
The author said he was using the new medium to tell a prequel story to his series of books, the next of which, Turncoat, is due in April 2009.
Butcher talked to SCI FI Wire about the graphic novel in this exclusive interview.
So this graphic novel is a prequel to The Dresden Files series of novels. What backstory does it cover?

So this graphic novel is a prequel to The Dresden Files series of novels. What backstory does it cover?
Butcher: The idea for this story was inspired by one of the scripts from the pilot from the show that was on SCI FI [Channel]. So it's one of those cross-pollination things, I guess. In the original pilot script, at one point, Murphy's talking to Harry, and Harry doesn't want to help her, and Murphy's like, "OK, listen. I've got to admit you've helped us before. You know there was the Calumet Heights kidnapping, that mess at the zoo." And I said, that mess at the zoo--that could really work as a story. The original title of the story was "That Mess at the Zoo." And then I started trying to figure out what the mess at the zoo would be.
[So] there's been a murder at the Lincoln Park Zoo, and the only suspect is a gorilla who couldn't possibly have done it, but there's pressure from the city to hurry up and get the case closed. And Murphy's like, "Well, you know, I don't really particularly think we're going to accomplish anything by just killing a gorilla, because whatever did it is still going to be out there." So she has to get Dresden to come help. And Dresden gets on the trail, and he sort of winds up hooking up with one of the zoo staff and gets involved in all kinds of trouble and danger and explosions and so on. That part is just kind of standard Dresden Files stuff...
Sanctuary - SciFi Magazine Oct '08 Issue - Damian Kindler Interview
From SciFi Magazine's October 2008 issue, page 26:
TV IN FOCUS
SANCTUARY
"We're going to lots of places and meeting lots of different types of abnormals," says creator and executive producer Damian Kindler. "We're going to go capture witches in Scotland. We're going to try to transport a deadly creature across the Himalayas in a plane, and that's not going to work out so well [laughs]. We're going to bring some stuff back from the Amazon that grows in our Sanctuary out of control. We're going to go the catacombs underneath Rome and deal with vampires."
According to Kindler, they take license with things that are recognizable. "Vampires as something extinct but that were once potentially even a boon to the progress of civilization. So that is part of the show, that reinvention of either legend or myth or even revisionist history to spice up the stew."
In upcoming episdes, "Magnus and Will's relationship evolves from episode to episode. That they really do challenge each other, support each other, have moments of doubt with each other, but they really are meant to work together. He really is the protege she's been waiting for 100 years, and I think every episode he proves why. I think that's also born because of the amazing chemistry between Robin Dunne and Amanda Tapping. It's just like they've already six seasons of TV together, the way they naturally connect," says Kindler. As for Magnus' daugher, Ashley, "she does go through hell," he says. 'Her relationship with her mother is completely rocked to the core because very, very sensitive and powerful information comes to light that Magnus has been hiding from her ... She does get some really juicy stuff to play, but she also does a lot of cool ass-kicking, she shoots stuff, blows stuff up, and fights and gets quippy."
