Stargate Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog: Questions for Louis Ferreria (Col. Everett Young)?

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for June 18, 2010:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update and to view the new photos.)

Finally! Office Pics! Yet Another Guest Blogger Announcement! And the Mailbag!

What a difference an idea makes. I’d been spinning my wheels on my latest story, trying to find that elusive through-line that would tie all its narrative elements together – and then, yesterday, I found it. Or, more appropriately, it was presented to me by fellow Exec. Producer Brad Wright. And, just like that, the pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place. Well, more or less. I’m still missing some corner pieces and portions of the sky on the upper left, but I’m in much better shape. Today, I put together a preliminary beat sheet which I’ve started to flesh out. I aim to have a reading document ready for early next week. Have to say, I am very excited about this episode – probably more excited than I’ve been for an episode since Atlantis season 5′s Remnants...

Okay, looks like the guest bloggers are coming up fast and furious. I’ve collected your questions for Jennifer Spence and will be sending them her way this weekend. Next up...

The lovely Louis Ferreira, SGU’s Colonel Everett Young, is looking forward to hearing from you. If you’ve got questions and comments for Destiny’s commander, start posting!

Heather writes: “In my favorite episode “Faith” TJ goes to a river where there is a waterfall. Can you tell me the name of that waterfall?”
Answer: I don’t know whether the waterfall has an actual name, but I do know that it’s located in Widgeon Park, where the episode was shot. According to Carl [Binder], who produced the episode, the waterfall required a bit of a trek to get to – and Alaina, pregnant at the time, was a trooper throughout, making the hike there and back without a peep of protest. Also according to Carl, there are plenty of park rangers in the area who could probably point you in the right direction. Or recover your body if you wander off the trail and happen to encounter one of the many bears that frequent the area.

crayonbaby writes: “Peter DeLuise is back?! Directing possibly?”
Answer: Directing definitely. Episode #11: Deliverance...

Stargate Universe - Actor Peter Kelamis Answers Your Questions!

Actor Peter Kelamis Answers Your Questions!

Today, it gives me great pleasure to turn this blog over to actor Peter Kelamis, Stargate: Universe’s Dr. Adam Brody, for what I hope will be the first of many cast Q&A’s. I remember Peter from way back when he first graced graced the Stargate franchise with his presence, guest-starring as the fleet-footed Dr. Langham in SG-1’s Smoke and Mirrors. Today, he spends less time being clothes-lined by Jaffas and more time exploring the vast outer reaches of space alongside the rest of his fellow unlikely crewmembers aboard Destiny. Which, I’m sure, is the way he’d prefer it.

Anyway, a big thank you to Peter who has taken time off from his very demanding twittering schedule to swing by and spend time with us. And, to everyone else – enjoy…

A brief excerpt:

Edith writes: “Question for Peter K – hello! I’m enjoying the changes in the relationship between your character and Robert Carlyle’s character. My question concerns keeping the timeline of such changes straight as an actor. Is this easier to do in a tv show which at least is filmed episode by episode, rather than in a film, where scenes will be shot in the most convenient order?
In addition, so much of this show hangs on the people and the relationships – has this been as satisfying as I am imagining it might have been?”
PK: It truly is satisfying. This show is very relationship based, possibly more than previous incarnations of the series. And watching those relationships develop over time is as rewarding to the actor as it is to the people following the story.

It is much easier to keep timelines in your head on TV as opposed to movies but you have to be on your toes…I was educated on that fact while being directed by Peter DeLuise…I showed up on set and he asked me where Brody last appeared in the script and where he will appear next? I was stumped for a minute and was embarrassed to say that I had a pretty good overall idea, but didn’t have an exact answer….I have never made that mistake since…a lesson well learned. Thanks Peter!

Sanctuary / Stargate - SciFi Wire: Robin Dunne - "Robin Hood: Beyond Sherwood"

At SciFi Wire:

Robin Dunne says Sherwood Forest has monsters but no tights

By Bryan Cairns
05/11/09

Robin Dunne, who will star as the title character in SCI FI Channel's upcoming original movie Robin Hood: Beyond Sherwood, told SCI FI Wire that the film adds a supernatural element to the venerable legend. (Possible spoilers ahead!)
"There's a monster that is being used as a weapon by the sheriff in order to control things," Dunne said in an exclusive interview last week. "Robin is left to try and stop this monster. It's not a classic creature in the sense it's pure
evil; it's actually a girl that has been transformed, so Robin has to preserve this life that has been morphed. It was an interesting film to do. Robin Hood is a character I've always wanted to play, and such an iconic archetype."

Robin Hood: Beyond Sherwood isn't on SCI FI's schedule yet...

~~**~~**

The movie stars Sanctuary's Robin Dunne, Erica Durance, Julian Sands, David Palffy, Cainan Wiebe, David Richmond-Peck, Richard de Klerk and Anna Louise Sargeant. Written by Chase Parker and directed by Stargate's Peter DeLuise.

Stargate Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog Update - Peter DeLuise Answers Your Questions!

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for April 22, 2009:

Peter De Luise and Shy One (Alex Zahara) from Stargate SG-1's 'Beast of Burden.'

April 22, 2009: Director Peter DeLuise Answers Your Questions + Another Upcoming Guest Blogger

Some of my fondest memories of my early years on SG-1 involve Director Peter DeLuise - his fast-paced style, his encyclopedic knowledge of the show’s mythology, and , of course, his unrestrained sense of humor. He occupied the office across the hall from Paul and I, a veritable Stargate shrine he decorated with the weirdest collection of curios imaginable: prop weapons, visceral alien design work, a rubber life cast of a swollen belly with a ready-made pocket for extruding symbiotes. A chamber of horrors to be sure and yet, whenever a cast or crew member would bring their child by, they would inevitably gravitate to his office, partly to check out the weird exhibit, and partly for Peter himself who would inevitably put on a private show for the kids. From my office, I would hear him chatting away with them, discusing their interests, after which the conversation would eventually segue into his “Pull my finger” request and cap off with his trademark Barney the Dinosaur impression that never failed to impress. Peter was (and still is) good for a laugh, but he’s also an incredibly hard-working, dedicated, and talented individual who has scripted and directed some of the franchise’s seminal episodes. As SG-1 drew to an end, a show that had been an important part of his life for many, many seasons, Peter decided to take a break from the franchise…

Well, I’m happy to report that, three years later, Peter is back in the Stargate fold. And, I’m even happier to report that he received nothing but raves for his work on a (not so) little episode called Fire. It’s been a great working with the guy again and I look forward to seeing much more of him in the months to come.

A couple of weeks ago, I asked him whether he might be interested in doing a guest entry for this blog. “It’s simple,”I told him. ”I’ll gather some fan questions and send the your way. You can feel free to pick and choose among them, send back your responses, and I’ll post the whole as a dedicated Peter DeLuise entry.” Sounds perfectly reasonable - unless you’ve never done one of these before and end up so overwhelmed by the fan questions that, instead of picking and choosing, you end up answering all of them. Suffice it to say he was impressed with the care and detail that went into many of your queries and took it upon himself to respond with equal care and detail. Oh, and humor. The practical joke he played on those poor Jaffa extras makes me chuckle every time I think about it.

Now, before I turn things over to Peter, I’d like to make another Stargate-related guest blogger announcement. Producer John G. Lenic has been with the franchise from the very beginning, starting way back on the Children of the Gods pilot. Over his many years with us, his duties have ranged from scheduling and budgeting to coordination and general troubleshooting. Every early call, he’s one of the first people on set, and every late wrap, he’s one of the last people to leave. John has kindly agreed to take part in a Q&A so if you have questions for him, start posting them! [NOTE: at the link above!]

And now, over to Peter…
PDL: First I would very much like to thank Joe for making this Q and A possible… and for making me feel so welcome when I found myself back across the hall from him at the Stargate office. Now on to the questions… I have tried to answer in the spirit the questions were asked. Forgive me if I took them too seriously… or not seriously enough.

A brief excerpt:

Jason writes: “Did you ever expect the character of Lorne to take off like it did when you first came up with the character and named him after your brother or father in law? Thanks for casting Kavan Smith in the role, he’s one of my favorites now.”
PDL: Major Lorne is named after my brother-in-law Lorne Loder in the episode “Enemy Mine”. Kavan Smith stood out from the get go. He’s very focused, handsome and talented. It was a no brainer to bring him back. I didn’t ‘expect’ him to work on Stargate as much as he did but I was not ‘surprised’ because he is so good. (He’s one of my favorites too.)

Stargate Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog: Questions for Director Peter De Luise?

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for April 2, 2009:

Peter De Luise and Shy One (Alex Zahara) from Stargate SG-1's 'Beast of Burden.'

April 2, 2009: Waiting for the Other Vengeful Shoe to Drop, Peter DeLuise Wants to Hear From You

... Today, we screened Ivon Bartok’s directorial debut. The first batch of kino scenes were a lot fun, featuring Eli and Chloe, Spencer and Brody, Scott, Young, and a peeved James (played by the lovely Julia Anderson. What a sweetheart!).

As for the actual episodes: Ernest Dickerson continues to do a bang-up job directing Earth, Peter DeLuise is in the editing room working on Fire, and Andy Mikita is putting the finishing touches on Air I, II, and III, promising us a cut by late tomorrow.

Oh, speaking of Peter DeLuise - if you have questions for the walking Stargate omnipedia, start posting. He’s agreed to come by and do a Q&A. Once he’s completed his director’s cut of course.

Today’s pics: Last night’s dinner at Modern Burger. They had to kick us out.

2008 Fall Preview: Part II

By Kathie Huddleston

Take a look around the sci-fi television landscape, boys and girls. Never before has there been such variety. From Battlestar Galactica to Pushing Daisies to Lost to Ghost Hunters to Saving Grace to Heroes to Supernatural to Torchwood, on a regular basis we're treated to great drama, fantastic acting and fully realized worlds.

It wasn't that long ago when we drummed our fingers on the remote, wondering why there wasn't anything good on television despite the fact that we had 500 channels to choose from. That can't be said today. If you can't find anything good to watch, you haven't set your TiVo or turned on the Internet, and you're not trying.

Forget reruns. Year round we're treated to great television, with more new shows coming every season. ... Miss a show? Download it off the Net. ... Want to find out more about show's world? Check out the online comic book. Explore the latest Web series ... save up a bunch of your favorite show's episodes and have a marathon, zooming through those pesky commercials ... It's winter and there's nothing to do? No problem. There's a new series premiering on cable. ... Want to hear some actors' commentary about your favorite episode of a series? Pop in the DVD.

We are not bound and spoonfed television shows anymore. We, the viewers, are the ones who are in control. And, fortunately networks, cable channels and the Internet are clamoring for our attention. Despite the devastating writers' strike and the thirst for ratings gold, those 500 channels and the Internet are hungry for content, which forces the major networks to take chances if they want to keep us watching.

We're in a new Golden Age, spurred on by creative minds and an enormous landscape of possibilities. And so shows that have no right to exist on network television (Heroes, Lost) have given opportunities to a new breed of series (Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone) that push boundaries in the most delightful ways. And with a whole new pack of fresh faces bursting through, offering their own take on what sci-fi and fantasy genre television is really about (Primeval, Sanctuary, Fringe), things are only going to get more interesting.

While the showy shows have pushed the envelope of what it means to be a sci-fi and fantasy series, quieter series have expanded the possibilities of what genre television is in their own way (Medium, Chuck). Meanwhile, the old friends we've embraced (Stargate, Doctor Who, Smallville) have continued to remind us what sci-fi is all about, and they haven't done that by playing it safe.

It's a force that no writers' strike could stop. And there's more waiting in the wings as the midseason replacements (Caprica, Dollhouse, Kings, Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire) ready themselves to explore their own strange new worlds.

Sci-fi and fantasy genre television now offer television writers and producers a way to push past the bounds of normal storytelling, and finally all viewers are ready to embrace it. This is a Golden Age that may never end.

Last week's 2008 Fall SF TV Preview, Part I had the scoop on all the new shows, canceled series and kid stuff.

Returning and Continuing Shows

Stargate Atlantis
SCI FI, Fridays, 10 p.m. ET/PT
Continuing

Happy birthday, Stargate Atlantis! You're hitting a hundred ... episodes, that is. "It's a milestone year for us. We're hitting a hundred episodes," said executive producer Martin Gero. "This year, more than ever, we were like, 'All right, what have the fans been dying to see?'" Presently in its fifth and final season, Teyla gave birth and became a working mom, Woolsey discovered that he can't always follow the rules, and McKay contracted an Alzheimer's-type illness called Second Childhood. As the final season continues, Daniel Jackson visits Atlantis in a midseason two-parter, a coalition of humans claim the Atlantis team has committed crimes against the people of the Pegasus galaxy, and Michael attacks Atlantis in an attempt to kidnap Teyla's child. After the series finishes its run in January, a two-hour Stargate Atlantis movie will air that will later be released on DVD by MGM. The film will be written by executive producers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie.

The Outlook: It's sad to see Stargate Atlantis in its final season so soon after we lost Stargate SG-1. But the series will most likely continue on the way SG-1 has, as movies released direct to DVD. But fear not, Stargate fans. SCI FI has just announced a new series called Stargate Universe, with a different team and a brand-new mission. Check out the "Midseason and Beyond" section below for more details.

Midseason and Beyond

Stargate Universe, SCI FI, Summer 2009

It's a brand-new team and a brand-new series. After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers discover an unmanned starship called the Destiny, which was launched by the Ancients at the height of their civilization. However, it was a grand experiment that was set in motion, but never completed, and once the team boards the ship they aren't able to return to Earth. As the new crew of the Destiny travels to the far reaches of the universe, they won't be able to control where the ship goes as it attempts to complete it mission to connect with previously launched Stargates. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper (co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis) will executive-produce and write episodes for the new
series. Production on the new series is planned to begin early next year, with the series premiering in the summer of 2009.

Stargate SG-1:- Stargate Planet: Musetta Vander Interview

From Stargate Planet:

GERMAN

ENGLISH

(Photos at the site.)

A brief excerpt:

Interview with Musetta Vander

Stargate-Planet, July 2008

We know Musetta Vander in the tv show Stargate as "Shaunac" and we're grateful that Musetta Vander took some time off her busy schedule to answer a few career related questions for our German website visitors.

S-P.de: In 2000, you made a guest appearance on Stargate SG-1 in the episode "Crossroads" as "Shaunac". What's stuck in your memory regarding working on the Stargate set?

MV: They made me feel welcome right away. Everyone was very friendly and worked really fast and easily together. We had a lot of fun too as Peter, the director, was a jokester and it made for lots of amusement on set. He would say funny things like: "And now with fire in your loins you look at Chris and say……" just before he would yell action. Which made it difficult to keep a straight face at times.

S-P.de: You had a lot of scenes together with Chris Judge and Chris Judge is known for doing pranks or jokes. Any fun stories to share?

MV: Chris is a great guy and I had a wonderful time working with him. In my death scene he had a feather and was tickling my nose while I was trying to lie motionless pretending to be dead. At first I thought it was a bug or something, and I tried desperately not to flinch. I continued with great restraint to not move, as the pesky "bug" didn't seem to want to leave my nose alone. Finally couldn't stand it anymore and opened my eyes, only to realize I was a victim of one of their many on set pranks. I can't remember if Peter put him up to it, or if he came up with this one by himself.

Stargate SG-1: Colin Cunningham Interview

With many thanks (again) to keeno at GateWorld Forum for the heads up:

http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=7778596&postcount=1051

Stargate Planet has a new interview with Colin Cunningham:

http://www.stargate-sg1-planet.de/archiv/cc2008-eng.html (in English)

Colin discusses his new endeavors, Centrigrade and JPod, and working on SG1, including the new SG1 movie, Continuum.

A brief excerpt:

S-P.de: Your name appears on the cast list for the made for DVD movie "Stargate:Continuum". How was it to be back at the Stargate set and what can you tell us about filming your scenes? Any funny stories? Pranks?

CC: It was an absolute blast. Martin Wood was actually helping me put together my own project at the time, 'Centigrade'. He was kind of mentoring me through the process of directing. And so, when he called and said that he and John Smith has a little something for me, if I was willing to help them out, it was a no brainer. I owe many people over at Stargate a lot. I truly do. Deluise, Martin Wood, John Smith, Michael Greenburg, Brad Wright, all those guys. And when I needed help, they were there.
