Sci Fi charts its course for the future
'Battlestar Galactica' helped lift the cable channel; 'Sanctuary' reflects its openness to new models.

... "We're at No. 5 for the year," Howe said, "and within spitting distance of A&E at No. 4, which I think has shocked some people who have assumed that we're so niche and narrow that we don't even register on the Richter scale."
The question is how the channel will make the earth move again. Howe pointed to the new series "Sanctuary," which premiered Oct. 3 and saw its pilot finish as the night's No. 1 prime-time cable entertainment program among adults 25 to 54, as part of the answer.
The fantasy show -- about the mysterious 157-year-old researcher Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), who tends to a refuge for magical beasties -- is also a symbol of Sci Fi's eagerness to embrace new models.
"Sanctuary" began as an Internet series of webisodes and is filmed on a "virtual set" of green-screen technology and CGI effects. The show also uses "RED camera," which records straight to a computer hard drive for a nimbler post-production process ...

W2W: Stargate Rehab
Atlantis, Sanctuary and more.
by Tory Ireland Mell
December 4, 2008 - We cover a lot of television here on IGN TV, and there's still way more airing than we normally cover. So in the interest of helping you figure out what's worth watching, we have What 2 Watch, a.k.a. W2W, with our picks for the following night's programming.
Each day one of the IGN editors offers their unique take on what's worth watching, recording, or is otherwise noteworthy. So, without further ado, here are our picks for Friday, December 5, 2008.
... Happy December to all and to all a happy Friday night of television fun! With four kick-ass shows that are sure to rock your very core to the ground, these are sure-fire cures for the Friday night blues.
... Stargate Atlantis: "Infection" (SCI FI, 9-10pm)
Then, at 9pm shoot on over to the SCI FI Channel for the beginning of my favorite part of the weekend, Stargate Atlantis.
In this week's episode, "Infection," the Atlantis team discover a Wraith crew in stasis all stricken with a lethal disease caused in part by "Dr. Keller." For its fifth and final season this show has been putting on some pretty good episodes, and this is sure to be one of them.
... Sanctuary: "Requiem" (SCI FI, 10-11pm)
Don't worry kiddies, at 10pm you don't even have to touch the remote! Leave it on SCI FI for an all-new episode of one of my new favorite shows of the season, Sanctuary.
"Requiem" takes Dr. Magnus and Will on an underwater adventure, but when their submarine encounters trouble in Bermuda Triangle it's only a matter of time before they turn on each other. If you haven't fallen in love with this show yet, then now is the time. With its unique shooting style and wonderful cast of actors, this show has hit written all over it!

Dr. Magnus feels ill in 'Sanctuary'
December 5, 2008
TONIGHT'S MIGHT-SEE: "Sanctuary," 10 p.m., Sci Fi.
In a sharp change of pace, this series offers an episode with only two characters -- or three, counting the parasite taking over Helen Magnus' soul.
Magnus (Amanda Tapping), age 157, is aboard a submarine with Will Zimmerman. It's a strong story, aided by Tapping's eerily commanding performance.

Sanctuary Gets Caught in the Bermuda Triangle
Dec 4, 2008 04:47 PM ET by Erin Fox
Sci Fi's newest hit, Sanctuary — which was just picked up for a second season — is headed to a dangerous place: The Bermuda Triangle. In an intense and dramatic episode that airs on Friday (10 pm/ET), Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and her colleague Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) get trapped in a submarine while investigating a deadly parasite attack on creatures living in the triangle. TVGuide.com spoke with Tapping, who is also executive producer, about the genesis of the episode, what it was like to film with Dunne 24/7, and what's next for the Sanctuary crew this season.
A brief excerpt:
... TVGuide.com: Let's talk about "Requiem." Who came up with the idea to have you and Robin in a submarine for an entire episode?

Tapping: Damian [Kindler, the creator and exec producer], so we blame him mostly (laughs). Damian wrote the plane crash episode "Kush" and we had these practical sets that we built and used, and they were quite expensive sets to build. The crew hated shooting in it; it was such a nightmare shooting in such a small room with blowing snow. So, the joke was, we should repurpose this and save money because we're dealing with such a finite budget. And Damian says, "A Marine Show!" And so "Requiem" was born — and also to give our visual effects team a break as well.
