Ask Matt: The Glades, The Gates, Mad Men, Hawaii Five-0 and More!

... Question: I've finally finished the first season of Stargate: Universe, and I'm curious about your thoughts on it (and whether you thought it was worth watching, as I don't remember reading anything about your opinion of it). Stargate: SG-1 was much lighter and had a sense of humor that was usually near the surface, and we'll just pretend Atlantis was a bad dream. However, SG:U seems like an attempt to shoehorn the Stargate mythology into the dark style and brutal sensibilities of Battlestar Galactica. Don't get me wrong, I was entertained by the first season and will keep watching, but it's a departure from what the franchise was, and the melding of the SG mythos with the BSG style results in the proverbial machine that knows all the words but can't quite get the music right (if that makes any sense). However, I can't fault it for providing an unexpected reboot of the franchise, and if I only watched shows as good as BSG, then I wouldn't be watching much. Also, I said I'd watch when it comes back, but I guess that's making a pretty big assumption: Has it been renewed? — Mike
Matt Roush: Yes, it will be back, with the second season starting Sept. 28 — in a new Tuesday time slot, now that Fridays on Syfy have been turned over to wrestling this fall. (Don't get me started.) It's one of my so-far-fruitless goals to catch up with the second half of the Universe season before the new episodes begin. Your reaction of the show feels pretty spot-on to me. There's no question its tone is darker and harsher than the Stargate norm, and I got the sense many franchise fans were turned off by its relentlessly downbeat nature. I'm certainly intrigued by it, but the fact that so many episodes remain unwatched on my DVR tells me that either my priorities are out of whack or it's not a world I'm particularly eager to keep exploring. For now, though, keeping an open mind, and even if I end up jumping into the second season without completely finishing the first, I'll try to give it a shot.

Sanctuary Goes Bollywood

by Michael Logan January 14, 2010

Robin Dunne has gone toe-to-toe with witches, vampires and time-traveling serial killers in his role as forensic shrink Will Zimmerman on Sanctuary. But in the show’s January 15 season finale he will face his greatest challenge ever—dancing Bollywood style! The two-hour episode finds docile abnormals suddenly becoming violent all over the world. Will goes to Mumbai to get answers and is bitten by an abnormal spider which—long story short—may lead to global disaster. The spider’s venom has Will breaking into intense fever and spasms, speaking extensive Hindi and hallucinating an entire Bollywood musical number featuring him and 15 back up dancers.
“It was totally insane,” Dunne says. “I’m not a dancer at all—in fact, I can only do a two-step if I bite my lip long enough—so I was absolutely terrified! The whole thing was so crazy that at first I thought it was a prank. We’re always playing practical jokes on each other at the set and when I read the script I thought that’s what it was. I was really impressed at the lengths [exec producers] Martin Wood and Damian Kindler had gone to fool me—writing an entire fake story! But, to my horror, it turned out to be the real deal...”

...“Kali,” the two-part season finale of Sanctuary airs Friday, January 15, 9/8c, Syfy.

Fringe - TV Guide Magazine Online: Leonard Nimoy Interview

From TV Guide Magazine Online:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

A Fresh Enterprise

By William Keck May 11, 2009

... [J.J.] Abrams was equally emotional when, last month, he persuaded the series-shy star to watch—and then appear in—a few episodes of Fringe, which he’d never seen. “I never in my wildest dreams thought he would do it,” says Abrams. “We didn’t think we were going to get him for ‘Star Trek,’ let alone Fringe. But then we were editing ‘Star Trek’ and the William Bell question came up, and Leonard was sitting next to us and a light went off.”

Nimoy’s eyes sparkle as he recalls Abrams’ pitch: “He said, ‘We’ve got this character who is enormously wealthy, powerful and very intelligent, who was once the partner of one of our other characters [Walter Bishop]. There’s an aura of ambiguity to him. We don’t know exactly what his intentions are, but he may be behind a very negative force...’”

Star Trek - TV Guide Magazine Online: J.J. Abrams Interview

At TV Guide Magazine Online:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Setting a New Course

by Michael Logan May 06, 2009

He successfully rebooted “Mission: Impossible” for the movies. Now producer and director J.J. Abrams—the supermind behind Alias, Lost and Fringe—is bringing another iconic ’60s series to the big screen. Only this one comes with tons of intergalactic baggage. “Star Trek,” a hip, sexy, high-octane prequel about the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise, stars newbie heartthrob Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk, and Zachary Quinto (Heroes) and Leonard Nimoy as the younger and older Spock, respectively. It hits theaters May 8, more than 42 years after it debuted on NBC. Will the masses give a hoot? Though Gene Roddenberry’s rose-colored vision of tomorrow earned global devotion and spawned a multibillion-dollar business—including five TV spin-offs and 10 feature films—enthusiasm for Trek has been on the wane for years. Abrams, who grew up preferring George Lucas’ take on outer space, talks to TV Guide Magazine about his new film and why even nonfans should boldly go to the multiplex and give it a try.

A brief excerpt:

What made you—an admitted non-Trekker—think you were the right man for this job?
As a kid I loved Star Wars because it was pure fantasy and disconnected from everything we knew. Star Trek wasn’t my thing. But when the opportunity to make this film came along, my perspective shifted greatly. I came to realize that—unlike Star Wars—the universe Mr. Roddenberry created is all about us. Not only is his vision still relevant, I would argue that it’s more relevant now than ever.

NCIS - TV Guide Magazine Online: Michael Weatherly Interview

At TV Guide Magazine Online:

Michael Weatherly Speaks!

by Chris Willman May 03, 2009

After toying with fans for the last four seasons, NCIS is finally making the most of the relationship between Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo)--or "Tiva," as it’s been dubbed on fan boards--for the sixth season’s multi-part final arc. You can read more about the Tony-and-Ziva developments in TV Guide Magazine’s cover story, on sale Thursday. Here, we spend time catching up with Weatherly for this exclusive bonus Q&A. (Warning: Abandon all reverence, ye who enter here.)

A brief excerpt:

NCIS is an underdog. Which seems strange to say about a show that has recently been the top scripted series on TV. Yet that popularity happened gradually, so not everyone noticed. And it definitely doesn’t get the media attention a lot of far lesser-rated shows that have exclusively youthful demographics do.
It’s weird. When I went to Australia two years ago, it was like an episode of The Monkees. You had people screaming out of buses. And the demographic there is 18 to 25--it’s a “young” show. In France, it’s like being in the Beatles. You go down the street, and they think it’s the most exciting thing in the world. It’s nutty! And now in the U.S., partly because of the constant reruns on the USA Network, it’s getting more of that kind of traction. But by no means, like you’re saying, does it have that kind of massive-show feeling. And yet with the numbers and everything else, it is a massive show. The popularity of NCIS is a little bit like when you meet a very, very wealthy person, but he drives a Subaru and insists on parking around the corner instead of using the valet.

NCIS airs Tuesday at 8pm on CBS.

Alex O'Loughlin Resurrected!

by Lisa Bernhard April 15, 2009

A brief excerpt:

Not every actor’s return to TV merits a countdown clock. But check out Alex O’Loughlin’s MySpace page, where a flashing display reads: "23 days, 16 hours, 47 minutes, 38 seconds until my guest spot on Criminal Minds."

A little over the top for a one-week gig? Not to the millions of obsessed, feverish (and mostly female) fans who hunger for the mere sight of him—the ones who swooned over his sexy vampire, PI Mick St. John, on the CBS drama Moonlight. When the show was canceled last May after just one season, they protested. Not just in e-mails and chat rooms, but also in ads in Variety and on the backs of buses.

Desperate Housewives - TV Guide Magazine Online: Gale Harold Interview

At TV Guide Magazine Online:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Gale Harold's First Post-Accident Interview

by William Keck

April 15, 2009

After a near-fatal motorcycle accident sidelined Gale Harold last October, the actor finally returns to Desperate Housewives as Susan’s long-absent painter boy lover, Jackson, on May 3. “It’s taken him such a long time to get back to being almost normal,” says co-star Neal McDonough, who worked with Gale on his first day back on set. “And there are still many problems that he goes through.” Gale—whom Neal says “looks like a million”—has only one real complaint: he hasn’t been able to get back on the same Ducati motorcycle he had completely restored since the devastating crash. The actor talks to William Keck about his road to recovery and Wisteria Lane:

... Word is when Jackson returns he will have to contend with Dave, who has his own intentions for Susan. Should we be worried about Jackson’s future?
Anytime you’ve got somebody like Dave Williams walking up and down the street, you’ve got to be worried about everybody. There are a number of bad scenarios that could take place. I have a scene with Dave and Orson where I’m thanking Dave for saving my butt from burning to death in the fire. But then Jackson realizes, “Wait a minute. You didn’t really save my ass, did you?” So it’s sets up the question of whether Jackson will realize that Dave actually locked him in the bathroom. It still remains to be seen whether Jackson will be around for the season finale.

Life - TV Guide Magazine Online - Interview with Life's Creator/Executive Producer Rand Ravich

Life's Final Moments

By Ileane Rudolph April 08, 2009 08:29 AM EST

Life ended it second season tonight (9/8c,NBC). Though critical praise has been high (the quirky detective show was on AFI’s Top Ten list in 2008), ratings not so much. Executive producer and creator Rand Ravich talked to TVGuideMagazine.com about the season finale and hopes for another year.

A brief excerpt:

How will this episode affect Reese and Crews’ odd couple relationship?
We find out what Crews has been searching for since he left prison. He thinks he’s searching for an answer to what put him away, but really, he’s searching to find himself. What he needs to understand is you find yourself by being with other people. He’s had these unsatisfying relationships with women and there’s been a person sitting in the car right next to him who has been there through everything with him. He needs to understand that perhaps the most important person in his life, though not necessarily on an ongoing romantic level, is Dani.

THE DAILY REVIEW

Back at Last: Fringe and Rescue Me

By Matt Roush April 07, 2009 08:44 AM EST

... Sometimes being patient pays off. After resting it during the first months of American Idol madness, Fox tonight brings back its mystifying sci-fi curiosity Fringe, giving the freshman series the best time period imaginable [9pm]. (Unless it turns out to be a curse, and so many confused or repelled Idol fans tune out that Fox starts having second thoughts about its apparent devotion to this weird show.)

... I’ve run hot and cold on Fringe all season, but tonight’s episode is a strong re-introduction to the series, without bogging down too heavily in the back-story murky mythology (with one climactic exception), which may frustrate some of the show’s more fervent loyalists. (I’m always sorry when Blair Brown’s Nina Sharp is MIA, as is the case tonight.) The episode also provides a good showcase for Anna Torv as FBI agent Olivia Dunham, who can often seem a blank cipher but here shows real empathy as she bonds with a feral child found living underground at a demolition site. This mute little boy (hauntingly played by Spencer List) has the creepy ability to forecast crimes about to be committed by a serial killer the feds dub “The Artist.”

Naturally, it falls to crazed genius Walter Bishop (the always-terrific John Noble) to try to figure out what makes the kid tick. “My dear,” he tells Olivia, “There is much that is unexplained. Until it is.” Is there maybe room for this mad scientist on Lost? Walter also has a beguilingly funny moment as he dances to music while trying to charm the boy into donning a scary “neurostimulator” helmet. Touches like that go a long way toward making Fringe something more than a fringe dweller ...

Sexiest Bones Star David Boreanaz

April 01, 2009

We could spend an entire issue on the sexiness that is David Boreanaz. The Italian features. The soulful eyes. The lean bod. But those are all surface goodies, and even the man with such an enviable outside knows it’s what’s on the inside that matters most.
“It’s about being really comfortable in one’s own skin,” says the 39-year-old married father of one (soon to be two), confessing that he actually feels sexiest when working that old-school vibe he wears so well. “Whether it’s putting on a suit and stepping out like Sinatra and Dean Martin did, or casually kicking back in a lounge...I like that.”

As do the millions of Bones viewers who will finally get to see their favorite G-man kick all the way back when Boreanaz’s matinee idol–ish Agt. Seeley Booth and Emily Deschanel’s forensic guru Dr. Temperance Brennan seal the deal after four seasons of screwball comedy–infused sparks...
To see behind the scenes outtakes from all of the sexy photo shoots, check out our photo gallery.
