James Marsters - Total SciFi: Interview

From Total SciFi:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Posted on Thursday 10 July 2008

James Marsters: “You guys like watching me getting humiliated…”

James Marsters has been a really busy guy lately. He’s returned to Smallville as Brainiac, taken on the role of Piccolo in the upcoming big screen version of Dragonball, had a recurring role on Torchwood, had a cameo as real-life serial killer Ted Bundy in the TV miniseries The Green River Killer and played a number of concerts in support of his new album, Like a Waterfall. Talking with the audience at Creation Entertainment’s Grand Slam convention in Burbank, California, Marsters talked about his latest projects and looked back at his time on Buffy.

How did you feel about not being a Big Bad on Buffy?

I was really, really, really mad about not being a Big Bad. [Marsters found out that as a regular, Spike was supposed to be pathetic.] But you guys like watching me get humiliated. I decided to suffer as beautifully as I could, with dignity.

How did you feel about the end of Buffy as a series?

The end of that show was not about Spike, it was about the Potentials. I would have liked the Potentials not to have been on the show. Lovely women, but I would have liked [Spike] to have chosen to sacrifice himself.

Kevin J Anderson interview: spin-off fiction

In SFX recently we've been considering franchise fiction, and the creation of shared universes. For instance, the spin-off Star Trek novels, or the Buffy comics, or the extended Star Wars universe in all its incarnations. Is it easy to be an author in one of these famous universes? Over the next few weeks, exclusively on the SFX website, we'll be publishing Q&As with professional writers who work in this area. First up, meet novelist Kevin J Anderson.

SFX: Let's get this one straight out of the way, franchise fiction is maybe regarded as not creative in the same way that 'original' novels are. What's your take on that?

Kevin J Anderson: "I always find it odd that if an author writes a script for a popular TV show (say, Star Trek or Torchwood) – an original story based in an existing universe using established characters – then that's considered respectable, even exciting. But if an author writes a novel for the same show – also an original story based in an existing universe using established characters – then that's somehow less creative or less respectable. I would argue that writing a 400-page novel is more difficult and creatively challenging than writing a 50-page script, and when the novel gets published, I can proudly take credit for every paragraph, every page. A script, on the other hand, is manhandled by dozens of other people involved in the show, including the director and actors, and by the time the episode airs, it may have little resemblance to the original script."

"Anyone who insists that a writer can't be 'creative' in an established universe must not have much of an imagination. Virtually every work of fiction must be set within an established universe – if my story is set in modern London, then I have a certain culture, street layout, climate, language, and history by which I have to abide. If I choose to write a story set in ancient Japan, then I have the constraints of history to deal with. Does it stifle my creativity as an author because I can't, say, have jet aircraft in medieval Japan? No, I learn the rules of that universe and I set my story within those boundaries. If I write a novel set in the American West, does it stifle my creativity because I can't have the characters encounter dinosaurs? (In science fiction, of course, both of those scenarios are indeed possible.)"

"Writing a story in the Star Wars universe, or The X-Files, or Dune, is no different than writing a story set in medieval Japan. I have to learn the universe, the characters, the rules, and then I write the best novel I can. I have written dozens of my own original novels and dozens of novels set in established universes – I find the work extremely satisfying."

**snippage**

There will be more interviews about media fiction over the course of the next few weeks, so you might want to bookmark our features section. Remember you can read features on this subject in SFX 170 (on sale now) and 171 (on sale from Wednesday 4 June).

John Barrowman Interview - The Secret World Of Captain Jack

INTERVIEWS

When you say 'Captain Jack', some foolish people may respond with 'Jack Sparrow!'

But not the hardcore Torchwood fans - for them, there is only one Captain Jack - Captain Jack Harkness, the immortal, happy go lucky (most of the time) adventurer who leads the Torchwood team against several universes full of bad guys. Never to be outdone by that time-travelling interloper, Doctor Who, Captain Jack has garnered a legion of fans, as has the actor who playes him - John Barrowman.

We've managed to snare this interview from the BBC Worldwide where all things Jack are revealed, and by all, we mean 'all'. So now, when someone says to you - 'you don't know Jack!' you may reply, 'no, sir, I beg to differ - I do know Jack'.

Actor John Barrowman didn’t need a TARDIS to take him into space. All it took was the news that Captain Jack Harkness would be getting his own show and he was over the moon.

When viewers last saw Captain Jack in Doctor Who, he was stranded on a satellite many thousands of years in the future. He had heroically faced down a Dalek invasion to protect his new friends, The Doctor and Rose – but his fate was unknown.

Now Jack is back, and in Russell T Davies’s dark and sexy sci-fi thriller the Time Agent from the 51st century is at the helm of Torchwood, an elite, alien-fighting organisation on the front line in the battle to protect the human race.

“Jack heads up a team of secret agents who are separate from the Government, outside police jurisdiction and beyond the United Nations. At Torchwood, they answer to no one but themselves. They make their own rules,” explains John Barrowman, who plays the enigmatic action man with the mysterious past.

“Jack’s the leader and the glue – he keeps everyone together. He’s the hero … although I don’t think he’d call himself a hero, he’d just call himself a man who does the job because it needs doing.”

But, says the actor, the journey from his terrifying Dalek encounter to 21st-century Cardiff – home of the Hub, Torchwood’s top-secret HQ – has left its mark on Jack. “Jack’s a little bit darker and he’s a little bit angrier than when we last saw him. After all, he was ditched on that satellite and who wouldn’t be angry about that?” he says.

“Towards the end of Doctor Who, Jack was becoming more human – I mean human in the sense that he was starting to feel for other people rather than just thinking about himself. As Torchwood begins, he’s lost some of that. He doesn’t always consider other people’s feelings – his priority is the good of the world.”

Some things, however, never change. “He’s still fun, he still has his dry sense of humour and I think he’s still sexy,” says the actor, revealing that Jack is back to his old tricks, putting his moves on everyone and, well, everything. “It doesn’t have to have a pulse for Jack to fancy it. And if it’s got a zip code, he’ll sleep with it,” he quips.

The Sarah Jane Adventures - Pioneer Press: Sarah Jane, it's good to see you

From the Pioneer Press (Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN):

http://www.twincities.com/entertainment/ci_8883353?source=rss

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

Oh, Sarah Jane, it's good to see you

By Julio Ojeda-Zapata

Article Last Updated: 04/10/2008 09:03:42 PM CDT

I fall for women in sci-fi TV shows on a regular basis.

Some of my recent crushes include the indomitable President Laura Roslin on "Battlestar Galactica," the valkyrie-like officer Aeryn Sun of "Farscape" (later reincarnated as a bratty Vala Mal Doran on "Stargate SG1") and the regal-yet-mischievous ambassador Delenn on "Babylon 5."

Ah, but my original, one true love is Sarah Jane Smith of "Doctor Who."

Sarah Jane, played by Elisabeth Sladen, is one of many "companions" — but perhaps the most memorable — to the space-and-time-traveling Time Lord known simply as the Doctor. She was on the show in the 1970s, with subsequent guest appearances.

Given her enduring popularity (she's a Whovian favorite), it's no wonder Sarah Jane now has a spinoff series, "The Sarah Jane Adventures."

**snippage**

Friday's series premiere on the Sci Fi Channel has a cool twist on the alien-intruder schtick, with invaders placing a suspicious substance in soda called Bubble Shock!, and then luring children into drinking it and visiting the factory where it is produced. It's a bit childish for hardened Whovians, but expertly executed.

**snippage**

Mark your calendars for April 18, when a new season of "Doctor Who" kicks off on the Sci Fi Channel; and for April 19 for the second-season finale of "Torchwood," another "Doctor Who" spinoff, shown on BBC America.

Wow, it's a good time to be a "Doctor Who" fanatic.

Doctor Who & Torchwood: Starlog Magazine: Digital Doctors

Starlog Magazine has an excerpt from their interview with visual FX supervisor Dave Houghton and visual FX producer Will Cohen, from their issue # 364 on sale now, at:

http://www.starlog.com/fearful_feature.php

A brief excerpt:

STARLOG: How has the first season of TORCHWOOD worked out?

HOUGHTON: There are a certain amount of production pains in ramping up a new series. We started late, and then we sat down to discuss it without seeing a script, which was a problem. It's like saying to an architect, "How much is it going to cost to build a house?" There isn't a plan to assess that, so we sat down and discussed the broad themes.

I think TORCHWOOD was supposed to be a much more psychological drama than it ended up being.

COHEN: It's a good amount of work, but it's maybe 20 shots instead of 100. Given the nature of how TORCHWOOD has evolved, it's actually a unique British television show.
