Woodshop Feature Film Premiere Draws Star Jesse Ventura, Cast & Crew to Boulder, February 15

Thursday February 5, 11:00 am ET

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The red carpet premiere of 42 Productions’ independent feature comedy Woodshop, starring Jesse Ventura, Mitch Pileggi, Don S. Davis, and Denver Bronco Rod Smith will be held February 15, 2009 at 7pm MST at the Atlas Building, a world-class media facility on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder.

15-minute media Q & A session with Jesse Ventura and director Pete Coggan held immediately prior to the screening (6:30pm)—during which photos and video are permitted.

Woodshop is actor Jesse Ventura’s first feature film in a decade. His past films include Predator, The Running Man, and Demolition Man. Mr. Ventura has also been a Navy SEAL, professional wrestler and the Governor of Minnesota.

Actor Mitch Pileggi has appeared in popular television series including The X-Files, Stargate: Atlantis, Dallas, China Beach, Gray’s Anatomy, Law & Order and Boston Legal.

Don S. Davis starred in Stargate SG-1, Twin Peaks and The X-Files; and in films including A League of Their Own, Cliffhanger, Con Air and Best In Show. Sadly, Don passed away shortly after the wrap of principal photography.

Woodshop is the first feature film from Boulder-based 42 Productions, who provide complete film and video production and post-production services for Fortune 500 clients. The picture was directed, written and produced by Pete Coggan; utilized Colorado locations; and features a number of local, young actors. Use of the innovative RED ONE digital camera enabled less lighting equipment, a smaller crew and a fast production schedule.

The main character of Woodshop, Chris, is a high school senior with one goal—to make it through high school unscathed and move on to an Ivy League college. There is just one problem; when he causes a dangerous accident in his chemistry class, he’s ordered by his principal (Davis) to spend his Saturdays in woodshop detention with an ex-Army Ranger (Ventura) and a bad kid gone really bad who intends to blow them all up...with Chris’s help.

'Prisoner' actor Patrick McGoohan dies in LA

By ANDREW DALTON, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES – Patrick McGoohan, the Emmy-winning actor who created and starred in the cult classic television show "The Prisoner," has died. He was 80.

McGoohan died Tuesday in Los Angeles after a short illness, his son-in-law, film producer Cleve Landsberg, said.

McGoohan won two Emmys for his work on the Peter Falk detective drama "Columbo," and more recently appeared as King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film "Braveheart."

But he was most famous as the character known only as Number Six in "The Prisoner," a sci-fi tinged 1960s British series in which a former spy is held captive in a small enclave known only as The Village, where a mysterious authority named Number One constantly prevents his escape.

McGoohan came up with the concept and wrote and directed several episodes of the show, which has kept a devoted following in the United States and Europe for four decades ...

Trekkies pay final visits to Las Vegas attraction

By OSKAR GARCIA, Associated Press Writer Fri Aug 29, 5:14 PM ET

LAS VEGAS - After a decade at the final frontier, Star Trek: The Experience is going where no Las Vegas Strip attraction wants to go.

With a decommissioning ceremony — as befits any great vessel — the exhibit and its replica of the starship Enterprise are closing Monday.

Thousands of trekkies are "beaming up" from across the United Federation of Planets, er, the United States and around the world one last time, according to exhibit spokesman Chad Boutte...

Hayes, 'Shaft' singer and disco presage, dies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Isaac Hayes, the baldheaded, baritone-voiced soul crooner who laid the groundwork for disco and whose "Theme From Shaft" won both Academy and Grammy awards, died Sunday afternoon after he collapsed near a treadmill, authorities said. He was 65.

Hayes was pronounced dead at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis an hour after he was found by a family member, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. The cause of death was not immediately known.

With his muscular build, shiny head and sunglasses, Hayes cut a striking figure at a time when most of his contemporaries were sporting Afros. His music, which came to be known as urban-contemporary, paved the way for disco as well as romantic crooners like Barry White.

And in his spoken-word introductions and interludes, Hayes was essentially rapping before there was rap. His career hit another high in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef, the sensible school cook and devoted ladies man on the animated TV show "South Park."

Hayes was about to begin work on a new album for Stax, the soul record label he helped build to legendary status. And he had recently finished work on a movie called "Soul Men" in which he played himself, starring Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac, who died on Saturday.

Film legend Charlton Heston dead at 84

By BOB THOMAS, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES - Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing "Ben-Hur" and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the '50s and '60s, has died. He was 84.

The actor died Saturday night at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife Lydia at his side, family spokesman Bill Powers said.

Powers declined to comment on the cause of death or provide further details.

"Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life. He was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played," Heston's family said in a statement. "No one could ask for a fuller life than his. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession, and to his country."

Heston revealed in 2002 that he had symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's disease, saying, "I must reconcile courage and surrender in equal measure."

With his large, muscular build, well-boned face and sonorous voice, Heston proved the ideal star during the period when Hollywood was filling movie screens with panoramas depicting the religious and historical past. "I have a face that belongs in another century," he often remarked.

Heston lent his strong presence to some of the most acclaimed and successful films of the midcentury. "Ben-Hur" won 11 Academy Awards, tying it for the record with the more recent "Titanic" (1997) and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003). Heston's other hits include: "The Ten Commandments," "El Cid," "55 Days at Peking," "Planet of the Apes" and "Earthquake."

He liked to the cite the number of historical figures he had portrayed:

Andrew Jackson ("The President's Lady," "The Buccaneer"), Moses ("The Ten Commandments"), title role of "El Cid," John the Baptist ("The Greatest Story Ever Told"), Michelangelo ("The Agony and the Ecstasy"), General Gordon ("Khartoum"), Marc Antony ("Julius Caesar," "Antony and Cleopatra"), Cardinal Richelieu ("The Three Musketeers"), Henry VIII ("The Prince and the Pauper").

Then his greatest role: "Ben-Hur."

Heston wasn't the first to be considered for the remake of 1925 biblical epic. Marlon Brando, Burt Lancaster and Rock Hudson had declined the film. Heston plunged into the role, rehearsing two months for the furious chariot race.

He railed at suggestions the race had been shot with a double: "I couldn't drive it well, but that wasn't necessary. All I had to do was stay on board so they could shoot me there. I didn't have to worry; MGM guaranteed I would win the race."

Writer Arthur C. Clarke dies at 90

By RAVI NESSMAN, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90.

**snippage**

Co-author with Stanley Kubrick of Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey," Clarke was regarded as far more than a science fiction writer.

He was credited with the concept of communications satellites in 1945, decades before they became a reality. Geosynchronous orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground, are called Clarke orbits.

He joined American broadcaster Walter Cronkite as commentator on the U.S. Apollo moonshots in the late 1960s.

Enduring Legacy: The History of 'Stargate'

Steve Fritz

SPACE.com Sat Mar 15, 10:01 AM ET

Last December, the TV series "Stargate SG-1" made a little bit of history. After ten years of struggle, cast changes and network shuffles, it became the longest running American science fiction TV series, ever.

Let's repeat that. Ever.

Longer than any of the incarnations of "Star Trek." Same for "Babylon 5" or "Battlestar Galactica." Ditto for "X-Files," "Twilight Zone," "Outer Limits," or any other U.S. domestic series tripping the TV rift.

Of course, anyone from the other side of the Atlantic can look at the incredible number of years that "Doctor Who" has been televised and, maybe even righteously, up their nose at "SG-1's" decade of existence. But even the seemingly unkillable Doctor spent quite a bit of time travelling anywhere in dimensions and space but on Earth's airwaves, too. Still, when you consider the number of non-news/talk shows that have lasted longer than ten years anyway, the list is surprisingly small, especially here in the U.S.

**snippage**

Actually from another galaxy, the Ori, as any good race of bad guys, see the Milky Way as prime territory to spread their beliefs. As can also be expected, SG-1 stands in their way. As far as the TV show is concerned, this arc would not be resolved on the small screen because of Sci-Fi Channel's sudden decision to pull the plug on the series. As fans now know, it's now being handled in the first of the new direct-to-DVD releases, "Ark of Truth."

That doesn't mean every plot thread has been answered though. As it stands, "Stargate SG-1" is still an ongoing project. Another DVD movie, currently titled "Continuum" is apparently slated for release this July. Another spin-off series, "Universe" is also in the works and just might have characters from the original SG-1 series in it.

All one can say is time will tell. After all, it's a darn big universe out there.

"Painkiller Jane" put to sleep at Sci Fi

By Nellie Andreeva and Kimberly Nordyke
Wed Aug 15, 1:16 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Sci Fi Channel is pulling the plug on "Painkiller Jane."

The female-centered action-hero series starring Kristanna Loken is wrapping production on its 22-episode first-season order, which will run as planned. Sixteen episodes have aired so far, with the season/series finale slated for September 21

Based on the comic book of the same name, "Jane" centers on top DEA agent Jane Vasco (Loken), a woman with regenerative powers who joins a covert government agency that hunts down "neuros," people with neurological powers.

The cancellation of "Jane" comes on the heels of the strong Friday premiere of another Sci Fi series based on a comic strip, "Flash Gordon," which scored the channel's best series premiere numbers this year.
