‘Battlestar’ returns with a boom

Grace Park dishes on the final season of ‘BSG’
It’s baaaaaaaaaaack! Battlestar Galactica, the sci-fi winner of Emmy, Hugo, Saturn and Peabody awards, is returning for its fourth and final season at last.
Following a decimated human population and a fleet of spaceships on the run from the robot Cylons, the show has won over critics and fans alike with its grainy realism and underlying socio-political questions.
Season 4 launches as the 50,000 humans continue toward a refuge Earth. While suspicions arise around the return of Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff, Bionic Woman), four fleet members struggle with the revelation that they’re actually Cylons.
Grace Park, the bubbly actress who plays three versions of one Cylon character (Sharon/Boomer/Athena), chatted with TVGuide.ca during a press tour in Toronto.
TVGuide.ca: You’ve also done The Outer Limits and Stargate SG-1 – are you a hardcore sci-fi fan?
Grace Park: No! [Laughs.] I didn’t even realize I was doing sci-fi until people started looking at my resume. I think that’s mostly because I was an actor in Vancouver [where many sci-fi shows are shot], after The X-Files.
TVG: Boomer has so many versions. How do you prepare to play them?
GP: In the beginning there was just one character. But it was a little challenging even then, because it was like, ‘OK, so her programming’s coming out. What does that look like?’ You have to look within yourself for things you’re in denial about. And then we had another Sharon, who’s now known as Athena. And that seemed simple because she was living a lie her whole life.

TVG: Most BSG fans are pretty hardcore...
GP: I feel like most of our viewership is pretty smart to be able to follow a show like Battlestar. But then again, it’s not rocket science. It could be if you’re trying to figure out every single thread, but there are so many other elements – action, sensuality, politics, character development.
