Stargate - Brad Wright Answers Your Questions

At Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for January 2, 2009:

(Please follow the link for the complete LENGTHY blog update. Photos of Brad, Paul Mullie, Martin Wood and Carl Binder [and more] at the site.)

January 2, 2009: Brad Wright Answers Your Questions

Today, rather than regale you with an elaborate account of how my mother made me apply her hairdryer to the sliding back door in an effort to melt the ice that had frozen it shut so that she could clear the kitchen of hot pepper fumes and oil, I'm turning this entry over
to Brad Wright and his long-awaited Q&A session.

Now those of you who only come here for my hilarious responses to email spam and cute doggy pics could be excused for not knowing that Brad Wright co-created Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and the upcoming Stargate: Universe, has acted as an Executive Producer and Showrunner on all three, written a mind-staggering number of episodes for the Stargate franchise (many of them significant and uncredited rewrites) and, perhaps most importantly, has through his generosity and infinite patience, shepherded countless eager up-and-comers through the challenging, sometimes tricky, occasionally baffling world of television production (myself among them). His writing/producing credits have included work on The Black Stallion, Neon Rider, The Outer Limits, and, of course, the following Q&A…

... Laura writes: "When you first pitched Stargate, did you every dream that it would last for 10 seasons, still continue on in movie format, and create 2 spin off series? Or, what were you initial expectations of the SG-1?"
BW: I knew we would be making 44 episodes, which was as much as I dared imagine at the time. 10 years? No. In fact, if you'd told me it would have gone that long, I would have told you I wouldn't still be here. But it's still fun, so I am.

... Jeff B. writes: "While I'm sure you're terribly busy with all things SGU at the moment, could you please give us an update as to where exactly things are with regard to the third Stargate movie?"
BW: We're making a movie. Carl Binder and I are co-writing the script. Martin [Wood] will direct. If you have a good title, let me know.

... "My question to you is, how committed are you to the movie making of SGA? If committed, how many movies are we talking if each does well, infinite?"
BW: There are so many deals that have to be in place each time, it's impossible to predict. It also depends on the success of the first one. MGM was talking about more SG-1 movies as soon as the first did well.

... FargateOne writes: "1. TV is a business. Do a space show costs a lot more than vampires, paranormal or angels stories. Is it correct to say that MGM wanted to invest money in only one space show and finally, planets were aligned to put money in SGU since Farscape ended, Star Trek ended, Firefly ended, Battlestar Galactica ended etc.? 2.This one is more a wish than a question (maybe too early to ask) but, do you have plans for Claudia Black or Ben Browder in Stargate Universe?"
BW: Yes, to the first question and no to the second.

... Platschu writes: ... "6. Can we expect new shooting locations in Universe? Or will there be more CGI created world or maybe digital sets?"
BW: Yes, and yes. We're scouting in the desert of New Mexico as I write this sentence.

... TheTrueMole writes: "Are you going to bother to produce a full length opening sequence and have SciFi cut it down later, or just stick to a 3 second title screen from the get-go?"
BW: We are planning a third option.

... Aboleyn24 writes: "The Shrine will always be one of my all time favorite episodes. For me the best scenes in SGA are the small character driven ones. That is why I love Sunday as well. The scenes between Sheppard and Rodney stand out above all else, especially the pier scene, a perfect balance of heart and humor."
BW: The pier scene was why I wanted to write the episode.

... Libkat writes: "Rumors persist that you aren't a big fan of Vala as a character. Will Claudia Black continue to have a place in the SG1 movie universe? I adore the way Vala kept the snarky side of Daniel Jackson alive after RDA left the show and CB and MS have terrific chemistry."
BW: I thought Claudia was terrific in Continuum, but Vala won't be returning in the third movie.

... Enzo Aquarius writes: "A totally out-of-the-blue question, has there been thoughts of including SG-1 characters in the pilot for Continuum? Such as how Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks were in Atlantis' pilot?"
BW: Mmmmaybe.

Stargate Atlantis - MGM Stargate: Close Up: Kate Hewlett

At MGM Stargate:

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

Close Up: Kate Hewlett

September 1, 2008 (Actors)

If you thought “The Shrine” was emotional to watch, spare a thought for Kate Hewlett!

Since Kate Hewlett began playing the recurring character of Jeannie Miller on Stargate Atlantis, she’s had to deal with a lot. And we don’t just mean as the on-screen sister of Rodney McKay (not to mention the real-life sister of David Hewlett). Best known in her native Canada as a comedy actress, her visits to Atlantis have seen the actress dealing with everything from action to green-screen. And with “The Shrine”, Kate found herself dealing with something new yet again.
“I’m not going to lie,” she laughs. “It was very nerve wracking, actually. Just because I’ve never had to do that before – I’ve never had to do any kind of crying or anything like that before on film, so that was pretty scary. It’s definitely not my comfort zone – I’m definitely more comfortable doing comedy. So it was a really good experience.” It was very different,” she says of the episode, “and I think part of that is that Martin Gero wrote the first two and this one was Brad [Wright], so there was less banter and less witty dialogue. But I really enjoyed seeing the other side of the character and exploring that a little bit, and also trying to find ways to get that in there, to keep that humour...”

Sadly, Kate reports that so far, she hasn’t had another call back for Stargate Atlantis fifth season, and with the news that the show will not be returning for a sixth season, “The Shrine” may prove to be the last time we see Jeannie. Fingers crossed that she’ll turn up in the finale – or maybe even sooner!

Stargate Atlantis - GateWorld: David Hewlett Audio Interview - Sept 2 '08

At GateWorld:

Rodney Forever

GateWorld talks with David Hewlett

Though Stargate Atlantis has reached its triumphant fifth season, David Hewlett has been playing Dr. Rodney McKay for some eight years now. His character was introduced in the fifth season of Stargate SG-1 ("48 Hours"), and went on to win fan acclaim as a main character in the spin-off series.

As David tells us in this new interview, however, that wasn't always going to be the case.

GateWorld caught up with David Hewlett just a few days after the SCI FI Channel and MGM announced that this year will be the last for Atlantis -- though they plan to make a series of movies starting in 2009 (story). The actor candidly shares his disappointment, tempered by the optimism of an actor who is ready to try new things.

Also be sure to listen to Episode #8 of the GateWorld Podcast, in which Hewlett joins us for a special, extended discussion of "The Shrine!" Look for the podcast on iTunes, subscribe with your favorite podcast program, or listen right here at GateWorld. Our thanks to David for spending time with us. Interview transcript at the link above.

A brief excerpt:

GW: One of the things that Brad [Wright] said -- I got on the horn with Brad, it must have been Thursday, and did a phone interview. And the way he explained this decision was [to say]: We really wanted to have Atlantis go out on a high while there was enough life left in it that it would support movies. Because he is really committed to the movie format.
DH: It just makes sense on so many levels. SG-1 has proven that that's a model that can work. And I think movies are exciting. It's a really exciting process to come in, and you know you are there for a month or two months (or whatever it ends up being), and you can really focus on it. And then you can sort of let it go.

The "light at the end of the tunnel" while you are shooting is really important. And sometimes with episodic, and certainly with the frantic pace that we shoot Atlantis at -- I mean, we're literally shooting two or three episodes a day, sometimes. Obviously not the whole episodes, but scenes from three different episodes at the same time. And for a character like McKay, that is pretty daunting. It's like, "Whoa, wait a sec! What power is failing now?"

Stargate Atlantis - MGM Stargate: Director's Cut: The Shrine

At MGM Stargate:

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

Director Andy Mikita and David Hewlett (Dr. Rodney McKay)

Director's Cut: The Shrine

August 25, 2008 (Episodes)

Director Andy Mikita takes us behind the scenes on the making of season five episode “The Shrine”.

“The Shrine” is one of the most emotionally powerful episodes of Stargate Atlantis to date, as viewers witness McKay’s tragic mental demise. Written by Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis co-creator Brad Wright, the episode heralds the former show-runner’s welcome return to scripting the show.

Director Andy Mikita laughingly admits that the prospect of directing Wright’s return to the writing roster was somewhat daunting. Though the pair has worked together for years, there’s just something about directing a script written by one of the show’s creators.
“I have to confess I didn’t go into it quite as relaxed and comfortable as I usually would,” he chuckles. “I felt a little bit of extra pressure. And I don’t know why. It’s silly, because Brad is such a relaxed, collaborative fellow and his scripts are absolutely wonderful. This one, of course, drew an awful lot of attention because it was such a great script and there is so much for all the actors, especially David Hewlett...”

Stargate Atlantis - 'The Shrine'

Stargate Atlantis - The Shrine

Wow! What a terrific episode. Thank you Brad Wright and Andy Mikita, and the cast for excellent SciFi Friday entertainment.

The Shrine is wonderful, delicious episode, sort of a like a seven course meal. Instead of say, for example, a beef stew, with everything in one helping, we were treated to separate courses: 1) the appetizer in the introduction of Jeanie Miller on Atlantis, 2) the soup -- literally, Team Atlantis sitting on TOP of the offworld Stargate, surrounded by water, 3) the entree, Rodney in danger and the team trying to find an answer, 4) the main course -- the journey to The Shrine, 5) the bread -- David Hewlett tearing into his performance in the cave, 6) the salad -- every character in this episode having their own special moment -- Ronon with Jeanie in the hallway, Teyla with Rodney, Shep and Rodney on the pier, Jeanie with Rodney, Woolsey's memory of his father, Keller and Rodney with the video logs, heck, even the MALP gave its life as a distraction to the puddle jumper's entry through the Stargate, and 7) the dessert -- Rodney's admission to Jennifer that he has loved her for some time.

Stargate Atlantis, you're a jewel, and you're treasured by many fans. Thanks to all who have worked on and with the series for all your talents.

Stargate Atlantis / Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog Update Aug 22 '08 - NEW Photos!

Prepping for surgery on the mystery patient

August 22, 2008: Firstlies through Eightlies…

First, let me start off today's entry by saying if you have any questions about the new spin-off, Stargate: Universe, I'm not the person to ask. Hell, I didn't even know the ship was named Destiny until I read it in the press release this morning. What I do know, however, is that with Brad and Rob at the helm (you may know them from such works as Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis) it's sure to be a quality show.

Secondly, to all those of you seeking clarification, let me emphasize what I wrote in yesterday`s entry. Team Atlantis - Paul, Carl, Martin, Alan, and myself - was hopeful that, when all was said and done, the show would get that elusive sixth year pick-up. I can assure you that had we received the go-ahead, we would have been both thrilled and thankful to be producing a season six. Yes, we're disappointed. And,
yes, had the order come in for both shows, you can be damn sure we would have found a way to make it work. In the end, even though it didn`t pan out, there is still plenty of Stargate to look forward to in the near future.

Thirdly, thanks for the all-around well-wishes. I was surprised to discover that quite a few members of the cast and crew read this blog and they'll surely appreciate your kind words.

Fourthly, what does the future hold for Paul and I? Well, an Atlantis movie for one. It's still in the very early planning stages but it will be big and chock full of great character moments. Beyond that - it's too early to tell.

Emergency surgery

**snippage**

Seventhly, lost in all the recent discussion is actress Sharon Taylor's impending visit. Feel free to include questions for Sharon (a.k.a. Gate Technician Amelia Banks) amid the understandable venting.

Eighthly, I empathize with the fans. I realize that many, MANY, MANY of you are upset and as long as you have something to say, I'm willing to listen. So if you're taking the time to post your thoughts on recent developments, then know that the least I can do is take the time to read them and hit the "Approve" button.

I took some great shots on set today that I'll be posting in tomorrow's entry. Hopefully, they'll put a smile on some of your faces. In the meantime, enjoy tonight's episode, The Shrine, as well as a few snaps from a couple of the episodes we happen to be shooting…
