BEAU BRIDGES INTERVIEW
Friday, April 11
by Captain
Beau Bridges is a legend. The fact that we can speak to him at SCI FI PI is astounding. Son of Hollywood legend Lloyd Bridges, brother of Jeff Bridges, Beau has won so many acting awards over his illustrious career and garnered such a reputation that it boggles the mind to think that he actually plays a character on a Sci Fi show. But not only that, he loves it!
Playing General Hank Landry in the last two seasons of Stargate; SG1, and in the new Stargate DVD films, The Ark of Truth and Continuum, he has garnered a new set of fans who have responded enthusiastically to the steadfast military man with a twinkle in his eye. He spoke with us about Stargate, the people who work there and how to succeed in 'the family business'.
**snippage**
Q: Working on a show like Stargate, cast members do tend to form friendships. Was their someone that you 'bonded' with, with whom you were astonished to find yourself hanging out?
BB: "Well, I felt really great with all the cast. They're all wonderful in their own way. I think the person that I got closest to was Ben, because we lived nearby and our families got to know each other. But they were all great, Chris Judge, the comedian of the group, had all of us in stitches, Amanda (Tapping) was wonderful, Michael (Shanks), they were all really top notch folks. It all really starts from the top. Brad Wright and Bob Cooper are just super show runners and really talented writers in their own right. And then Rob got into directing, which he did on Ark of Truth, where he did a great job."
MORE STARGATE
Q: With The Ark of Truth, the SG1 Ori storyline comes to an end, and in a sense, SG1 the series. Did you ever start pestering Rob and Brad about some 'unfinished adventures' that General Hank Landry may have yet to come. A spinoff, perhaps - Stargate: Landry - The Untold Stories?
BB: "General Landry Goes To Australia! (laughs). Well, I think that even with these last movies, Rob and Brad always leave the door open a crack, to allow for the possibility of giving the fans more. I've recently been to a couple of conventions and I'm amazed at just how faithful people are to the show. I wouldn't be surprised that after these two DVDs come out (Ark of Truth, Continuum) and if they do well, there may be some more. So even though the Ori arc was tied up, who knows what's waiting out there in space?"

Amanda Tapping Interview - The Ark Of Truth, Sanctuary And More!
INTERVIEWS
Friday, April 11
by Captain
Amanda Tapping, who plays Samantha Carter on Stargate: SG1 and now on Season 4 of Stargate: Atlantis, has also been burrowing away on her new show, Sanctuary, which was once the most expensive web-exclusive show ever produced, but has now been picked up by the SCI FI Channel US. Before she started working on that, though, she had to tie up a few loose ends on Stargate: The Ark of Truth.
The Ark of Truth is the DVD movie that ties up the final story threads of SG1's tenth season, it's joined by Continuum, the next SG DVD movie, that has fans slathering at the bit. The Ark of Truth is out now, and has recieved a tremendous reception. Check out our review (and our fan forum) for confirmation!

ACTING, DIRECTING AND PRODUCING
Q: Let's talk about things you DO know about. With your move into directing and producing, (on Atlantis and Sanctuary) you're getting to the stage where you're no longer one of these childlike actors...
AT: "(laughs) I'm playing with the big boys now!"
Q: Is that frightening? Do you now go look at your previous producers and say 'oh my god, I had no idea!'.
AT: "I actually went up to Joe Mallozi and Paul Mullie on my first day of Atlantis because I was directing an episode and went 'I just want to apologise unequivocally for every time I came in to your office and asked a stupid question!' I get it. It's been a huge and very fast and very bumpy learning curve. But as I got into it I actually realised I knew a lot more than I thought I did. And I also know a lot more than I ever wanted to. (laughs!) It's an interesting business, I have to say. There were times when I went 'man, I wish I could just be an actress again - I used to think that was stressful'. (laughs) Not so much!"
**snippage**
ATLANTIS SEASON 5
Q: Season 5 Atlantis has seen some changes, to say the least, encouraging some fans but outraging others. What's your take on the Robert Picardo controversy?
AT: "Well, first of all, I love him. I can't back off from the fact that I really like him as a human being. And I think he's a wonderful actor. I think he's the perfect addition. The character of Woolsey creates such great character tension which is what the Stargate writers are so good at. The banter. Making it not only poignant but funny. It's what makes people love the Stargate franchise. It feeds perfectly into that, in my opinion."

The Sarah Jane Adventures - Pioneer Press: Sarah Jane, it's good to see you

Oh, Sarah Jane, it's good to see you
By Julio Ojeda-Zapata
Article Last Updated: 04/10/2008 09:03:42 PM CDT
I fall for women in sci-fi TV shows on a regular basis.
Some of my recent crushes include the indomitable President Laura Roslin on "Battlestar Galactica," the valkyrie-like officer Aeryn Sun of "Farscape" (later reincarnated as a bratty Vala Mal Doran on "Stargate SG1") and the regal-yet-mischievous ambassador Delenn on "Babylon 5."
Ah, but my original, one true love is Sarah Jane Smith of "Doctor Who."
Sarah Jane, played by Elisabeth Sladen, is one of many "companions" — but perhaps the most memorable — to the space-and-time-traveling Time Lord known simply as the Doctor. She was on the show in the 1970s, with subsequent guest appearances.
Given her enduring popularity (she's a Whovian favorite), it's no wonder Sarah Jane now has a spinoff series, "The Sarah Jane Adventures."
**snippage**
Friday's series premiere on the Sci Fi Channel has a cool twist on the alien-intruder schtick, with invaders placing a suspicious substance in soda called Bubble Shock!, and then luring children into drinking it and visiting the factory where it is produced. It's a bit childish for hardened Whovians, but expertly executed.
**snippage**
Mark your calendars for April 18, when a new season of "Doctor Who" kicks off on the Sci Fi Channel; and for April 19 for the second-season finale of "Torchwood," another "Doctor Who" spinoff, shown on BBC America.
Wow, it's a good time to be a "Doctor Who" fanatic.

Early Look at Stargate: Continuum
Beware of minor SPOILERS for Stargate: Continuum in the review below -- but nothing more than the info already released in MGM's summary.
A brief excerpt:
While visiting the set of Stargate Atlantis this month, GateWorld's editors were invited to attend a theatrical screening of the upcoming DVD movie Stargate: Continuum. We entered the theater with high expectations, as long-time Stargate fans who are longing for the glory days of SG-1 and waiting for something to come along and revitalize our enthusiasm for the franchise that we cover day-in and day-out.
We walked away as reborn Stargate fans.
For GateWorld owner Darren Sumner Stargate: Continuum is, simply put, the best movie or episode he has seen in years. It is easily in the top five for all 12 years of Stargate history, and he is still debating whether he may like it more than some of his all-time favorites: "Within the Serpent's Grasp" / "The Serpent's Lair," "The Fifth Race," "Jolinar's Memories" / "The Devil You Know," and "Lost City." If it is not better than these, if it is not the best Stargate since SG-1 began, Stargate: Continuum is certainly in their company.

Battlestar Galactica - Washington Post: Q&A with Jamie Bamber

Q&A: Galactica Star Jamie Bamber Doesn't Dig Sci-Fi
EVIL ROBOTS ARE ALWAYS trying to kill Jamie Bamber's bomber pilot character, Lee "Apollo" Adama, on the Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica" (Fri., 10 p.m.). It's unclear whether Bamber and his co-stars will finally escape the scheming cyborgs in the cult hit's final season, which just began. But one thing is clear: The English actor has won a galaxy of fans as the hunky, troubled hero.
A brief excerpt:
» EXPRESS: "Battlestar" has been a huge hit with critics. Why?
» BAMBER: I think they like the cultural and political relevance. It's like a window on the world. And I think critics like to feel like they’ve got a cause, because not everyone watches the show.
**snippage**
» EXPRESS: You get props for shirtless scenes. How do you stay in shape?
» BAMBER: By staying out of New York! I've been here for a week, and all I've done is eat. But, really, I'm just sort of healthy-minded. I try to be physically active at least once a day. I used to play rugby, but now I play tennis. And I try to eat good food but not overindulge.

Cosmotopia: Sci-Fi celebrity blog from Michael Shanks
2:43 PM PDT, April 10, 2008
We've already mentioned it in this blog, but here's the official lowdown. Amazon Cosmotopia is our new destination for all things science fiction, including movies, television, books, video games, toys, electronic gadgets, and more. Right now we're featuring a whole bunch of DVDs on sale, 4-for-3 books, 99-cent downloads, and more deals, but it's really intended to be a place you can go year-round to find cool stuff and talk to other sci-fi fans. Today for your reading pleasure, we have an exclusive celebrity blog from Michael Shanks, who plays Dr. Daniel Jackson in Stargate: The Ark of Truth, the follow-up to the Stargate SG-1 series. Then after you read his comments, you can watch a clip from the show. Keep an eye on this blog space or in Amazon Cosmotopia for more sci-fi celebrity content this month. --David

Amazon: Given that sci-fi often offers a vision of the future, what makes a good concept or idea "hold up" when you look at it years later?
Shanks: I think what's true of genre movies, and movies in general, that tend to hold up over time is that they have believable characters. For me, it's all about the characters; the audience must be able to believe them and empathize with them. The more that they resound as real people and react to different situations--no matter how seemingly far-fetched--appropriately, the more the audience will believe in them and their reactions in otherworldly situations.

Exclusive Interview: Fantasies, Fetishes and F/X
The enriched life of producer Damian Kindler
By Michael Simpson | Monday, April 7, 2008
Note: This is the first in a three-part interview with the creator, writer and producer of the upcoming SCI FI Channel series Sanctuary.
Emilie Ullerup (Ashley Magnus), Amanda Tapping (Dr. Helen Magnus) and Robin Dunne (Dr. Will Zimmerman)
Many fans of science fiction and action-packed television shows are likely to have seen the work of Damian Kindler. The Australian-born writer and producer worked on Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, Earth: Final Conflict, Relic Hunter, Code Name: Eternity, F/X: The Series, PSI Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Kindler’s latest venture is the fantasy series Sanctuary. Produced through his enhanced-media production company Stage 3 Media (S3M), Sanctuary stars Robin Dunne, Emilie Ullerup and Stargate’s Amanda Tapping. It debuted on the Internet in 2007 as a two-hour pilot divided into eight webisodes. The series’ success led to a distribution and licensing deal with the SCI FI Channel and an order for an upcoming 13-episode season for TV broadcast.
Having worked on several television series, Damian Kindler is an accomplished writer/producer.
Yours truly spoke to Damian Kindler at the Vancouver offices of S3M. In the first of a three-part transcript of that interview, Kindler discusses his writing career, the opportunities afforded by science fiction and fantasy, and why his name is associated with babe scientists.

Michael Simpson: Is there a process that you go through with every script that you write?
Damian Kindler: "Absolutely. There is an absolute distinct process that I go through. It’s called agony, and procrastination, and making those immediately around me suffer because I am chewing on problems I haven’t solved. My wife can tell you exactly what stage of the scriptwriting process I’m at by either how happy or miserable or grumpy or irritable I am. [She would say,] 'Oh, you’re happy because the people in Stargate liked your pitch and your golden,' 'Oh, you’re in the outlying phase because you’re still structuring it,' 'Oh, you’ve gone to draft, you’re actually kind of smiling,' [or,] 'Oh, you’ve just got notes, and that’s why your snapping at me.' ... I love to talk about [writing] with writers and other people who understand what we’re doing, and then I really need some solitude to go and problem solve off in a corner with myself ... It’s like a public and private kind of thing until finally the script is where it needs to me. I really do like to collaborate with people, but I like to write the script myself. I am not an over-the-shoulder 'you write a scene, I write a scene,' type person."
**snippage**
In Part Two of this interview, which will appear next week, Kindler will discuss his inspirations for Sanctuary, putting the series together, and his plans for its future.
