EXCLUSIVE Stargate Universe Video Interviews – Day Five
09/07/2010
Season one of Stargate Universe hits DVD and Blu-ray this week and, to celebrate, we’re hosting an exclusive series of interviews with the cast filmed on the set of the Destiny!
For your final batch of interviews we have another video from the charming Lou Diamond Phillips, this time discussing what it’s like to work with the rest of the Stargate Universe cast. Keeping him company is Alaina Huffman – the Destiny’s reluctant doctor rather fittingly sitting in the infirmary to discuss her character, and wearing an outfit we’ll probably never see Tamara Johansen (TJ for short) wearing on the show… alas!

EXCLUSIVE Stargate Universe video interviews – Day Four: Lou Diamond Phillips
Season one of Stargate Universe hits DVD and Blu-ray this week and, to celebrate, we’re hosting an exclusive series of interviews with the cast filmed on the set of the Destiny!
Lou Diamond Phillips plays the enigmatic Colonel David Telford, the military man stuck back on Earth who should’ve been leading the team instead of Young – although he does get to swap bodies with him from time to time, thanks to some handy alien body-switching pebbles (as Phillips says, “You need stones to play this character!”). We chat to him about Telford and what drew him to work on TV.

Upping the Ante In Stargate Universe Season Two
SFXCLUSIVE The show's producers tease where they'll be taking the story on the characters in the second season.

Stargate's Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper
Things reached a nadir of bleakness by the end of the first season of Stargate Universe with the interstellar thugs known as the Lucien Alliance taking over our heroes' ship by extreme force, leaving the good guys quite literally on their knees, and a defiant Colonel Young dealing with the news that ex-lover TJ (who was carrying their child) lay dying elsewhere on the ship. But that could all be a afternoon in the park compared to what the producers have lined up for season two, they reveal in an exclusive interview in SFX198.
For more of season two news, including some of the production team’s plans for new baddie, Simeon, played by Heroes’ Robert Knepper, check out the full interview in SFX198.

Long-running Stargate stalwart Brad Wright promises that escaping from the Alliance is going to be a messy business. "When you try to adopt a more realistic tone, where frankly we don't win every time, then there have to be real world repercussions like death and injury and loss. You can dig deeper into characters and the deeper you dig the repercussions can get bigger. We are going to some places with these characters, and already have really, that we would never go with the heroes of our other series..."

Our blindingly early 2011 preview, Inception and a look back at Firefly in the stonking new issue
Profiles
David Blue talks about his role as Eli in Stargate Universe and his hopes for the evolution of the character; Paul Cornell talks to Rob Williams about his new contract with DC on Action Comics, and Pixar good luck charm John Ratzenberger talks about his rise to fame through appearances in The Empire Strikes Back to his latest Toy Story 3.
Shhh, it’s Inception
The trailers for Christopher Nolan’s Inception are leaving everyone with questions. Well, here’s a set of 20 things you need to know about Inception to get you started before the film’s release on 16 July.
2011 Preview
With the rest of 2010 (Inception and Tron aside) looking like a washout we take a look at 2011’s top 11 films, with Thor, Captain America, The Green Lantern, and more. It’s everything you need to know about the next 12 months at the movies and everything you’ll want to avoid (Stretch Armstrong anyone?)
The Summer Of SF Reading
The third and final part of our look into the 100 greatest SF and Fantasy authors around, with a special on William Gibson’s Neuromancer, and this month’s Book Club Lord Of Light by Roger Zelazny.
... Retro Features
We rewind back this issue to 2002 for a look back at the tragically short lived Firefly, taking a look at the best episodes, the best quotes, and delving into some little known trivia about the series. We also use our Time Machine to take a look at Sam Raimi’s 1981 video nasty The Evil Dead, with Bruce Campbell revealing some interesting facts on the creation of the film.
Don’t Miss:
Wishlist: Avatar 2 – We break it down for Cameron here, and tell him what he needs to do in Avatar 2 (and what NOT to do), to make it a great sequel.
Spoiler Zone: Ashes To Ashes! Doctor Who! FlashForward! Fringe! Lost! Medium! Smallville! Stargate Universe! V! Oh my!
Big Shot: No Ordinary Family – the spiritual successor to Heroes, taking a Fantastic Four style approach to the superhero drama. Only right that it stars Michael Chiklis then.
* Merlin season three heads up this month’s Red Alert. Just tell Arthur your ruddy secret already!
* Although season five should have been the end for Supernatural the fact that it’s: a)brilliant and b) incredibly popular means that we have a whole bonus year with the Winchester Brothers to look forward to. Eric Kripke and Sera Gamble talk about the future of the show.
* Stargate Universe season two is filming as we speak! SFX has news on the latest addition to the cast – new villain Robert Knepper.
* Andy Diggle takes on Daredevil in this summer’s Shadowland crossover mini-series.
* Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill gets behind the camera for the movie adaptation of his comic book The Black Pearl. We speak to the former Jedi.
* Dark Horse re-launches Doctor Solar, Man Of The Atom in July, with Magnus following soon after. Get the inside scoop in the latest issue.
* The Doctor is going on tour with Doctor Who Live, featuring favourite aliens from New Who.
* First word on the third season of Sanctuary from show creator Damian Kindler
Rated: Splice, Shrek Forever After, Warehouse 13, The Crazies, The Lovely Bones, The Restoration Game, Doctor Who: City of the Daleks and Demon’s Souls all come under SFX’s mighty hammer of review justice.

Blogger Kelly Harker finds out what the Stargate actor has been doing with artist Martin Firrell
When my good friend and hero, cultural activist/artist/writer Martin Firrell told me that he was working with Stargate Atlantis’s Joe Flanigan for a new public art project, I had to find out more! Here in my interview with Martin, he talks about his art, the importance of science fiction, what it was like to work with Nathan Fillion and Joe Flanigan, and what sci-fi inspired projects he has planned for the future:
Science fiction seems to have really influenced you as an artist and writer – Complete Hero and King Of My Heart featured Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity) – and you just did a shoot with Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis). Why do you think sci-fi is so important?

Martin: “I love that science fiction asks huge and important questions in an accessible and confident way. Sci-fi speaks to everyone (not just academics and philosophers) but takes on huge academic and philosophic questions. I have decided to get closer to sci-fi in my art practice over the coming year, so expect lots more on this. I also love that shows like Firefly and Stargate have committed, clever, huge followings of intelligent and questioning fans who are powerful in their interest and understanding. Gertrude Stein said the trick was to have a small audience that made a lot of noise, and sci-fi fandoms tend to be self-contained and very vigorous, noisy, brilliant places. I also think there is something about outsidership and exclusion. So much of sci-fi deals with those themes, and is inclusive and generous. The classic example is the bridge of the original Enterprise: whilst parts of America were still segregated, the bridge was mixed in race and gender and all the more powerful because of the talents of all involved.”
“I also rather like that sci fi is this hidden ‘jewel’ – some people dismiss it because they do not understand it, whereas we know its true worth...”

SFX Issue 196
Terry Pratchett guest edits as we shine the spotlight on the fearless females taking over British telly
Guest Edited By Terry Pratchett
Yep, you read that right. The one and only Terry Pratchett has taken over SFX for one month only to help us launch the Summer Of SF Reading in rib-ticklingly irreverent style. This isn’t your average name-on-the-cover kind of job though, Sir Terry has contributed to all sections of the magazine from his hilarious Ed Zone to a “We Love SF” dedicated to Oblivion modding.
Who’s In Charge
Hmm, has anyone else noticed the brilliant female roles in some of our favourite British Sci-fi shows at the moment? Well we did so we only went and interviewed six of the best from the likes of Doctor Who, Merlin, Misfits and Being Human. Boys, who needs ‘em?
A Nightmare On Elm Street
The remake hits screens in little over a week, so we risk insomnia and mental psychosis to bring you the man behind the knives. Includes a chat with pizza face himself Jackie Earle Haley and the five freakiest Freddy moments.
Profiles
He’s a former vampire, time agent and alien brain-box but James Marsters can currently be found blowing stuff up and terrorizing little girls on Caprica, we have words. Stargate Universe’s TJ, Alaina Huffman, also jumps through the wormhole for a chat and author Adam Roberts talks New Model Army.

Stargate Universe's Alaina Huffman Teaser Interview:
The actress who plays TJ reckons she was in a similar position to her character
when she joined the franchise
In an exclusive interview in the new SFX (out next Wednesday), actress Alaina Huffman, who plays First Lieutenant Tamara "TJ" Johansen in the latest Stargate spin-off, Universe, reveals how she felt that she was in a similar position to her character – initially overwhelmed by the situation she found herself in. Especially as regards the negative reactions to the show and her character from some corners of the Stargate fanbase.

Especially as regards the negative reactions to the show and her character from some corners of the Stargate fanbase.
"I think initially some of us paid a little too much attention to the blogs and the fanbase," she says. "We had to learn for ourselves not to listen to that because it can be really horrible. They can be really mean. But people are entitled to their opinions… I thought it was a positive that these characters are growing and developing. I know it is different from the Stargate brand, since we are all not sure of ourselves, but I think it's more representative of the truth, to be quite honest. I think all of us in life are in a position to grow and it can be overwhelming. As a person I am starting this new show with a huge fanbase and it's got its grip on the world. I can definitely relate to TJ. She goes into it saying, `I know I can do it and I know I am good at what I do but this is really overwhelming.' I don't think that takes away from her strength at all. I think in fact all of the bones are there but she just has to muscle up and that's representative of all the characters."

SFX Magazine also has a two-part interview with Family Guy executive-producer Dave Goodman:

Family Guy Star Trek Interview Part One
With the approaching Star Trek very much on our mind at the moment - check out next issue of the mag - we revealed on Wednesday that the Family Guy team were planning an episode with The Next Generation crew. We love a bit of Family Guy, so when executive producer David Goodman chatted about it with journalists at a conference earlier this week, we were happy to grab the Q and A highlights to share...
A brief excerpt:
When the Star Trek actors provide their voices, do they come over as themselves or as their familiar on-screen characters?
Goodman: They're playing themselves. All the characters are playing themselves. Although I will say that they were all very game. We had fun playing with who they really are, and that Stewie discovers what it's like to hang out with them. It's a different Family Guy twist on your expectations, so I'm very pleased with the surprises in the episode in terms of the journey that Stewie takes with these people.

Interview with Mark Sheppard Part 2
The ever-cool Mark Sheppard wrote a foreword for the latest SFX Collection, dedicated to Battlestar Galactica, and we also interviewed him at length about playing the popular character of lawyer Romo Lampkin. He chatted with us about his many roles in other cult shows too, and there just wasn't enough space to do justice to everything he said, so last week and below we've printed some extra material from our conversation.
A brief excerpt:
SFX: You've worked with Katee Sackhoff on both Battlestar and Bionic Woman. Did you both enjoy Bionic Woman as much? How disappointed were you that it didn't continue?

A brief excerpt:
SFX: You've worked with Katee Sackhoff on both Battlestar and Bionic Woman. Did you both enjoy Bionic Woman as much? How disappointed were you that it didn't continue?
Sheppard: "Nobody set out to make a show that was half-arsed. I feel bad for the show; I feel bad for David Eick and everybody else. It just became this awful political wrangle, kept adjusting and squeezing. It turned into Knight Rider, basically. But we started out with something so dark and interesting. We were dead by the writers' strike. We got killed at that point."
"You know, we did some stuff on Bionic Woman together that will never be seen. There's an episode where she's all messed up in a motel… and I'm there, which doesn't make any sense whatsoever! Because two-thirds of it (the darkest, scariest parts of it; Battlestar-grade material) weren't used. It had some depth and some weight."
"There's something magical about watching Katee Sackhoff. She has a thing about her. It's effortless when she acts. She's one of the most compelling things to watch. And you see it in the Bionic Woman pilot - that fight, the Blade Runner-ish fight? You're like, 'Oooh!' Two hot women on a roof in the rain, beating the shit out of each other! [Laughs] She's truly fantastic. So it was just unfortunate. I feel really bad for Michelle Ryan too - one of the nicest girls in the world. She's very good, and hopefully she'll not have bad taste in her mouth about America. That girl's picture was on every bus stop, every building in America at one point!"

A brief excerpt:
I was wondering who was more fun to play: Aeryn Sun or Vala Mal Doran?
- Svein Ingvar P Kvilhaug
"They're both amazing characters. Again, I'd have to say that where I am in my life personally right now, I'd rather be conjuring lightness and comedy, because I couldn't find a way to separate myself from it entirely. I was always exhausted when I went home, playing Aeryn. She had the weight of the world on her shoulders. She was such a beautiful, soulful character. Very restrained work, taught me a lot of discipline as an actor. And Vala's the cheeky, naughty, energetic one, and the difficulty with that is, with young children, if you don't have the energy on the day when you turn up, you have to find it somehow because you owe it to the character – that's her essence, this huge ball of energy. But I couldn't choose between them. Perhaps Aeryn – by the end of her journey as we left her, she had more of a sense of humour. Maybe things wouldn't be so dire for her now if I was playing her. But they're both incredible."

Interview with Mark Sheppard Part 1
The actor who plays Romo Lampkin has been in about a million sci-fi TV shows. We persuaded the busiest man in genre television to write a foreword for our latest special, dedicated to Battlestar Galactica, and we also ran a four page interview in that edition – but even that wasn’t enough space for all his cool anecdotes, and so here on the SFX website over the next couple of weeks we’re able to share even more of what he told us. The 44-year-old actor has appeared in Dollhouse, Firefly, Star Trek, Medium and more, as well as being an accomplished musician, and we spoke to him about all of it when we met up at the last Starfury convention...
A brief excerpt:
SFX: Sounds like there's a real sense of community working on all these sci-fi shows in LA.
You can read even more of this interview next week on the SFX website, including Sheppard's thoughts on Doctor Who and Bionic Woman. In the meantime, don't miss what he says about working with the Battlestar team in our latest SFX special edition, on sale now.

SFX: Sounds like there's a real sense of community working on all these sci-fi shows in LA.
Sheppard: "It's a very big community in LA. I got to work with people like Eddie [James Olmos] and Mary [McDonnell], and Jamie [Bamber], Tahmoh [Penikett] - these are some extraordinary people. Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin I've worked with four or five times. Alan Tudyk. I mean these people are so nice! You've met them; you know I'm not bullshitting. They're lovely people! There's a reason why they carry on working, you know."
"I've got to know every director that I've worked with more than once. But it's not a slam-dunk. You know who you know. If you want to go to work, then you want to go to work with somebody who you know can do the job. That's why people get hired. That's why Javier [Grillo-Marxuach] will use the same directors and actors in a lot of his stuff. He knows he's gonna get what he wants."
"I've been very lucky as an actor. I've got some fantastic friends who write fantastic stuff. How great is your job when somebody goes, 'Mark, I've got something I'd like you to do which will bring you accolades, joy, and money.' [Laughs] I'm like, 'Nah, I don't feel like it. I want to go home and play on my PlayStation.' It's kind of marvellous! I feel I've been very lucky, you know, with Joss and Javier. I've known Javier for a long time; I've done many shows with him, and he's truly a great friend."

James Callis interviewed
Scientist, traitor, politician, prophet… there's more to Gaius Baltar than a drunken, self-interested flirt, as we found out when we chatted to actor James Callis at Starfury's Battlestar Galactica convention. Born in London in 1971, Callis is also known from his role in Bridget Jones's Diary. There's a big interview with him in the next SFX special, on sale tomorrow, but here are some snippets that didn't make the newsstand edition:
SFX: When you were preparing to play Baltar, did you go back and re-watch the 1970s original?

SFX: When you were preparing to play Baltar, did you go back and re-watch the 1970s original?
Callis: "I didn't need to go back to view the 1970s Battlestar again because I just remembered the original Baltar so well. I wasn't very comfortable about being this person - very determined not to be the same! John Colicos was phenomenal, actually, and I don't know how many times I saw it at an age of around seven or eight. I owe John Colicos in the original Battlestar a big debt. As soon as the word 'Baltar' was mentioned, I knew exactly who that was. There's this idea about meta-culture: why is Baltar instantly such a big deal in our series? Well, he's a big deal in our series because he has this inherited name from another show back in the '70s, where we know this man as a megalomaniac beast. He was really evil. Do we think, 'He's gonna be like this guy because that's his name'? He's an archetype. He fulfils this function. But essentially that hasn't happened in our show."

SFX: What sort of response do your characters get at conventions around the world?
Forbes: "Oh my God! Battlestar is shockingly popular in Germany. In Germany we had 4000 people at a convention. It's amazing how far people travel. People were travelling in from Italy - it blows my mind actually. It's such a universal thing, and Germans are big into science fiction. Turns out Germans and criminals on Death Row were my biggest fans from the Star Trek days. I guess they were running it a lot in Germany. But the Death Row thing… I don't want to get a complex! I used to get a lot of prison letters but that's sort of calmed down. I think it's because of some of the characters I've played I've always had a bit of an interesting fan base."

A brief excerpt:
Does anyone get a happy ending?
Define happy! I think the point of Battlestar is it really does examine what that means. It’s really a show about what it is to be human and how we make sense of nonsense and how we create hope where perhaps hope is a bit of an illusion, a bit of a choice and that you choose to believe rather than something that’s concrete, and that’s really what the show’s always been about, that happiness is achievable even in the direst of situations if you are equipped and can create that state of mind. At the end, some are happy and some are not, but it’s more about who they are and what they’ve learned than about the situation.
Law And Order starts on ITV1 tonight at 9pm.
