GateWorld Podcast: Episode #17

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

With no new episode of Stargate Atlantis to talk about this week, GateWorld editors Darren and David turn to a special discussion topic: the characters we lost too soon. We'll revisit the history of some beloved characters such as Jonas Quinn, Janet Fraiser, and Elizabeth Weir, and ask that tough question: Were they written out too soon, or was their departure satisfying storytelling?

This week we'll also preview GateWorld's upcoming interview with Paul Brown, the head of Legends Memorabilia -- the Stargate franchise's official seller of props, costumes, scripts, autographs, and more. And we'll update you on Stargate news and GateWorld site features from the past week!

GateWorld talks with Charles Shaughnessy

Though it has been several years since his appearance on Stargate SG-1, Charles Shaughnessy's portrayal as billionaire entreprener Alec Colson is still a role which resonates with many fans.

Colson's character sounded an interesting note in Season Eight's "Covenant." Should the truth, for truth's sake, be known? Even if there was nothing you could do about it, and even if it would only add worry to your existence?

GateWorld discusses this very question in our interview with Shaughnessy. He talks about the experience of shooting on set, his hopes for returning to the franchise, as well as his current endeavors. We also discuss the phenomenon of the TV sitcom, The Nanny, in which he starred.

A brief excerpt:

GW: You spent a lot of time with Amanda Tapping, how was she as an actress and a human being?
CS: She's: a) adorable, just adorable, and b) what surprised me was that she's a stand-up comic. Her upbringing, her background is stand-up comedy. Improv comedy. She comes from an improv comedy group and sort of found herself as this iconic science fiction heroine in this terrific show.

But she's hysterically funny and she comes from a Canadian ... like a Groundling, a comedy improv group, she's hysterical. She couldn't have been sweeter and nicer to work with. A terrific actress. The whole thing was just really one of those fortunate experiences you have as an actor. You never know what you're going to get into when you go off to do a show somewhere. Sometimes it's just like you have to get through it and do the job. And sometimes they just turn out to be a delight, and this was one, from every aspect, turned out to be delightful.

A brief excerpt:

Q. When it comes to your portrayals, where do you draw your experiences from?
A. Initially from me, I was born in East Africa, I was born in Tanzania, my mom is Tanzanian. Her perspectives growing up were vastly different from anything that those of us who grew up in the Western World could imagine. I grew up with those stories and influences and having been born there, it was always a very strong part of who our family was. I really used that when I went into the audition, I actually had a picture of my grandparents from my mother's side from Tanzania, and I thought about the closeness they had to the Earth and how separate their lives were from what I knew and I really called upon that.

... Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) It was the script. I am a big comic book fan and when I got the script and shot the Internet pilot, they asked me if I would be interested. I read it and I thought, "What a great idea! What a great thing to be a part of!" It's ground breaking and people aren't doing anything like this on television, not using a green screen the way we are. The storylines remind me of a graphic novel. Being inside a graphic novel adventure every day at work is like what every episode feels like. It is not your typical Sci-Fi genre. It's definitely got that graphic novel/comic book feel. There are some elements of the "X-Files" in there and there is some elements of X-Men in there. It's all really cool to me.

... Q) Where do you draw from for your portrayal?
A) I draw from some personal experience. The other thing is it is fun to play a character that has an interesting past and Henry definitely has an interesting past. We haven't seen it yet in the show, but it does get revealed half way through the season. That's always fun because it informs a lot of the decisions you would make as the character. That's kind of what is great about Henry. He's funny, sarcastic and all those things, but some of the funniest people have had the most intense lives. That's kind of Henry. He's definitely a very particular architect as far as even comic book characters go. So, I do draw from my experience as a comic book reader...

Richard Dean Anderson - Beyond Betrayal Repeated Nov. 8 '08

Richard Dean Anderson's made-for-tv movie from '94, 'Beyond Betrayal' is repeated November 8 '08 at 10am on LMN - the Lifetime MOVIE Network.

Beyond Betrayal - LMN - Saturday, November 8 '08 at 10am on LMN - Liftime Movie Network

Please be sure to confirm the times with your local listings -- 'Beyond Betrayal,' starring Richard Dean Anderson and Susan Dey.

Richard stars as a sociopathic cop searching for the estranged wife he has abused, played by Susan Dey. Although she has gone into hiding, she is unable to escape the threat he poses, both to her, and to the new man in her life.

This is one of Mr. Anderson's few "dark roles" -- and he provides a chilling performance, as his character, Bradley Matthews, journeys further away from redemption.

Filmed in Vancouver, BC, Canada, there are some other familiar faces from Stargate SG-1 in the cast, including: Tamsin Kelsey (Thor's Hammer and Thor's Chariot), Jerry Wasserman (Touchstone and Inauguration) and Robin Mossley (Window of Opportunity and Morpheus).

From Entertainment Tonight in 1994, a video clip with Richard Dean Anderson and Susan Dey on the set of "Beyond Betrayal," as they perform a stunt in the movie, with the assistance of Dan Shea. (The quality of the video is not perfect, my apologies.)

Digging Up Bodies and 'Bones' with Hart Hanson

By Reg Seeton

After jetting off to London, England to film the season premiere of Bones, creator and executive producer Hart Hanson has settled into life on the Fox airwaves, as show stars Emily Deschanel and David [Boreanaz] continue their investigations back on the western side of the pond. As the season progresses through November, both Brennan and fans will learn more about Booth's past as former Roswell actor Brendan Fehr steps into the show as his younger brother. And while we love the chemistry between Brennan and Booth, the younger brother attracts the attention of his older brother's partner.

When we took at look at the storylines of the upcoming November episodes, beginning on Wednesday the 5th, one in particular stood out above the rest. Later this month Booth and Brennan board a plane bound for China where they discover a burned body in a giant microwave while flying the friendly skies. Crazy, we know!

Late last week Hart Hanson jumped on the line for a conference call where we got to the bottom of casting Brendan Fehr and how the idea of a burned body on a flight to China came to life.

THE DEADBOLT: Can you talk about casting Brendan Fehr for Jared Booth and why he was right for the role?
HANSON: Oh, it was one of those things. God, it is so hard to find somebody who is in fact of leading man caliber who isn’t on a show. And we needed somebody we thought the character of Booth would care about deeply, but had a dark side and bore at least some physical resemblance to him. I said while we were doing it, ‘Oh, that’s it. I’m not casting any more family members. It’s too difficult.’ And then in came Brendan who I knew from Roswell, who’s also a nice Canadian boy, you know.

And he has grown up nicely. He’s got some wisdom on his face, some experience on his face, and he’s a very good actor. And it didn’t hurt a bit that he and David [Boreanaz] had conflicts on the ice. They both play hockey in their leagues and they’ve had some conflicts on the ice that comes into their relationship on the show, and he just knocked it out. He came in and - I think it was two days before we were shooting, and we had to change some air dates because we just weren’t going to go with somebody who wasn’t right, and he was very good. He was very impressive to us...
