Courtesy of FOX and HULU:

FOX Family Guy - Brian Griffin's House of Payne

Season 8 : Ep. 15|21:53|

Brian sells his soul for his screenplay.

[NOTE: The opening sequence to this episode has a scifi motif -- with music very reminiscent to Joel Goldsmith's Stargate Atlantis series music; shuttlecrafts similar to Stargate Atlantis and Star Trek: The Next Generation; and a battle sequence paying an homage to a Star Wars sequence (and previously homaged in Stargate SG-1's 'Fallen').]

Stargate: Universe - David Blue - MySpace Blog Update Jan 22 '09

From David Blue's MySpace blog update for January 22, 2009:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update.)

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

As you have all pretty much guessed, the thing I was waiting (forever) to tell everyone broke last week. So, here it is:

HOLLYWOOD REPORTER - DAVID BLUE

I'm VERY excited to begin shooting in a few weeks. I think this show has the potential to be amazing. Everyone involved in it has such wonderful ideas and I can't wait to be a part of bringing them to fruition. For those of you who think I'm playing Cliff on the show, or even Logan for that matter, I'm not. Different show, different role, thank you. But the role is a blast and the people are amazing. I can't wait to give you updates from the set here-and-there as schedule permits. (And I'd hope that this doesn't mean the end of Cliff as well... but that's never really been up to me, has it?)

... In case you didn't know this about me, I'm a ginormous geek and have watched ST:TNG from beginning to end (and DS9 and Voyager for that matter), everything Star Wars I can get my hands on, comic books, movies, tv shows, SG1 and Atlantis and much more. Being a part of this show will be an astounding geek-fantasy, and the cast (while not yet complete) is shaping up to be more than just icing on the cake... it's another whole cake!

I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say about the show when it airs, but in the meantime I wish you all the best and remember to keep an open mind. Remember: "The things people call impossible are simply the things they haven't seen yet."

Much love,
David

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - SciFi Weekly: George Lucas Interview

From the SciFi Channel's SciFi Weekly:

(Please follow the link for the complete SciFi Weekly interview.)

August 11, 2008

Mr. Star Wars himself, George Lucas (and company) pulls back the curtain on animating a sci-fi epic

By Patrick Lee

Star Wars: The Clone Wars arrives in late summer, the latest feature-film installment in George Lucas' epic space saga. But it's different: computer-animated, voiced mainly by unknown actors and directed by animator Dave Filoni (Avatar: The Last Airbender). And it appears to be aimed squarely at kids.

Clone Wars—which is an expansion of the series of 2-D animated interstitials that ran in 2003 on the Cartoon Network—actually started life as the first installment of Lucas' upcoming CG TV series of the same name. But Lucas, who acts as executive producer, liked the result so much he decided to turn it into a feature film.

The movie, set in the time period between Lucas' Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones and Episode III—Revenge of the Sith, brings back familiar characters such as Anakin Skywalker (voiced by Matt Lanter) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (James Arnold Taylor). But it centers on a host of new ones, including Anakin's heretofore unknown padawan learner Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) and the dark sorceress Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman), who is known to fans of the Star Wars comics and books, as well as a new member of the Hutt clan, whose voice sounds oddly familiar.

Lucas, Filoni and producer Catherine Winder spoke with reporters recently at Lucasfilm Animation's headquarters, Big Rock Ranch in Marin County, Calif. The Clone Wars opens Aug. 15.

The Star Wars saga has always been steeped in mythology and Jungian archetypes. What sort of mythological territory will the Clone Wars TV series and the proposed live-action Star Wars series deal with?
Lucas: The mythological arc of the saga doesn't really continue into these other things, because that is a story. It has a beginning, a middle and an end. It's a story of one man's struggle against evil and the redemption by his son and that sort of thing.

This is ... more episodic. It's more like Indiana Jones, actually. ... You have themes and things that still go through it, and there are things like that, but [myth is not] not what it's based on. This is bigger, and we get to more places. And the fun thing about animation, especially, and The Clone Wars in particular, is that we're allowed to go and do stories about clones, get to know them, and find out what they do for recreation, and what Jabba the Hutt's family is all about, and, you know, do all kinds of things that don't have anything to do with the main character. The [live-action Star Wars] series itself, the epic, is basically about one man, so it's very, very narrow, and you pass through a lot of things and you look at "What's that over there?" but you never got to look at it. So this allows us to go and look at all of that stuff. Which means we're not encumbered by this mythological uberstory of the psychological underpinnings of why somebody turns to be a bad person.

Stargate SG-1 / Star Wars / Pokemon - Video: Late Night with Conan O'Brien

Courtesy of HULU, a brief clip from the June 12 '08 episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien, a skit between Conan O'Brien and the show's graphic designer, Pierre Bernard, on a topic...of the current tomato salmonella scare in the United States, compared to events in Stargate SG-1, Star Wars and Pokemon.

Nerding It Up For Pierre

EDIT: 6/13/08 @ 5:38 -- A transcription of the skit:

Conan: "I wanted to mention one of the big stories this week, everybody talking about the salmonella outbreak affecting certain type of tomatoes. It's been a big scare, a bunch of tomatoes affected by the salmonella outbreak. McDonald's, and other restaurants nationwide, have completely pulled tomatoes from their menu.

Well, everyone here on the show is very concerned about this. We often order food from local restaurants. We don't know which tomatoes are okay, which ones aren't. But there's one guy on our staff that doesn't care at all about this issue, I'm talking about one of our graphic designers, Pierre Bernard."

(Still photo of Pierre shown on TV. Audience claps and laughs.)

Conan: There he is. He just doesn't care. I thought we should bring Pierre out here, and find out about his lack of interest in this issue. So, here he is everybody, Pierre Bernard."

(Pierre enters the studio, audience cheers and claps.)

Conan: "Now, Pierre, is it true that you just don't care about the salmonella outbreak affecting the tomatoes?"

Pierre: "I couldn't care less, Conan."

Conan: "Okay. But you ARE very interested in scifi television shows and Japanese anime, is that correct?"

Pierre: "It's my life."

Conan: "Okay. Well, I had an idea. Maybe, I can make you interested in the tomato salmonella outbreak, by talking about it in terms you'd understand, in a little segment I'd like to call, "Nerding It Up For Pierre."

(Audience cheers)

Conan: "All right, Pierre. In order for you to understand which tomatoes to avoid, let's say that beefsteak and plum tomatoes are infected with evil, like Darth Vader in Star Wars episode 4, "A New Hope." But cherry tomatoes are like still young Anakin Skywalker in "Attack of the Clones," still unspoiled and unpoisoned by the Dark Side."

Pierre: "You mean like a Jedi Knight, cherry tomatoes have a high metachlorian count?"

(Audience laughs)

Conan: "Exactly. Yes. And this salmonella outbreak is like the sinister Ori plague launched by the Priors in season nine of Stargate SG-1."

Pierre: "The same plague that Orlin fought using his Ancient memory in 'The Fourth Horseman' episode?" (Very deadpan)

(Audience laughs)

Conan: (laughing) "Yes, Pierre. (laughing) So convincing. (Camera switches to Pierre, who is trying to keep from breaking up laughing.) The very one, as if you just read it! Ah...And the FDA is using its powers to defeat the tomatoes in the same way that a Pinkachu on Pokemon would use its electric tail shock to gather berries for monster trainer Ash."

Pierre: "Wow. I had no idea that a salmonella outbreak affecting only specific types of tomatoes could be so incredibly fascinating." (Very droll. Audience laughs)

Conan: "Well now, maybe you'll pay closer attention next time you're at your neighborhood McDonald's."

Pierre: "Actually Conan, I'm not allowed within 50 yards of my neighborhood McDonald's. The girls who work the shake machine took out a restraining order against me. So long everybody." (Waves goodbye to the audience, audience cheers and applauds.)

Conan: (laughing) "Could we send him to an improv class? (laughing) I'll pay for it!"

Kevin J Anderson interview: spin-off fiction

In SFX recently we've been considering franchise fiction, and the creation of shared universes. For instance, the spin-off Star Trek novels, or the Buffy comics, or the extended Star Wars universe in all its incarnations. Is it easy to be an author in one of these famous universes? Over the next few weeks, exclusively on the SFX website, we'll be publishing Q&As with professional writers who work in this area. First up, meet novelist Kevin J Anderson.

SFX: Let's get this one straight out of the way, franchise fiction is maybe regarded as not creative in the same way that 'original' novels are. What's your take on that?

Kevin J Anderson: "I always find it odd that if an author writes a script for a popular TV show (say, Star Trek or Torchwood) – an original story based in an existing universe using established characters – then that's considered respectable, even exciting. But if an author writes a novel for the same show – also an original story based in an existing universe using established characters – then that's somehow less creative or less respectable. I would argue that writing a 400-page novel is more difficult and creatively challenging than writing a 50-page script, and when the novel gets published, I can proudly take credit for every paragraph, every page. A script, on the other hand, is manhandled by dozens of other people involved in the show, including the director and actors, and by the time the episode airs, it may have little resemblance to the original script."

"Anyone who insists that a writer can't be 'creative' in an established universe must not have much of an imagination. Virtually every work of fiction must be set within an established universe – if my story is set in modern London, then I have a certain culture, street layout, climate, language, and history by which I have to abide. If I choose to write a story set in ancient Japan, then I have the constraints of history to deal with. Does it stifle my creativity as an author because I can't, say, have jet aircraft in medieval Japan? No, I learn the rules of that universe and I set my story within those boundaries. If I write a novel set in the American West, does it stifle my creativity because I can't have the characters encounter dinosaurs? (In science fiction, of course, both of those scenarios are indeed possible.)"

"Writing a story in the Star Wars universe, or The X-Files, or Dune, is no different than writing a story set in medieval Japan. I have to learn the universe, the characters, the rules, and then I write the best novel I can. I have written dozens of my own original novels and dozens of novels set in established universes – I find the work extremely satisfying."

There will be more interviews about media fiction over the course of the next few weeks, so you might want to bookmark our features section. Remember you can read features on this subject in SFX 170 (on sale now) and 171 (on sale from Wednesday 4 June).
