Michael Shanks and Gail O'Grady from Living Out Loud

Interview with Michael Shanks–co-star of Stargate: SG-1

by Sara M. Harvey

Michael Shanks is a Canadian actor best known for his role as Dr. Daniel Jackson in the Stargate universe. He’s known universally as a nice guy, an ice hockey fan, and the lucky guy who married fanboy favorite Lexa Doig.

Of late, Michael has been in a number of high profile shows, including recurring guest roles in the Keifer Sutherland show 24 and the USA Network’s spy-thriller Burn Notice. His latest work includes co-starring in the Hallmark movie Living Out Loud (along with Gail O’Grady and airing May 8th at 9 p.m. and May 17th at 9 p.m. on the Hallmark Channel) and filming a television pilot titled The Eastmans (co-starring Donald Sutherland, Jacqueline Bisset, and Saffron Burrows).

Sara M. Harvey (author of The Convent of the Pure) spoke to Michael via telephone in late-April.

A brief excerpt:

SH: Wrapping up, where can we find you next on the big screen or television, aside from Living Out Loud? What’s your next big project?
MS: I finished a movie in November called Desperate Escape with Elisabeth Röhm. I just finished a pilot with Warner Brothers called The Eastmans with Donald Sutherland, Jacqueline Bisset, and Saffron Burrows that is about a family of doctors named “Eastman.” Donald and Jacqueline have five kids, and I play the best friend of one of the sons and I’m having an affair with Jacqueline Bisset.

Shanks talks Universe, new TV movie

Thursday, April 30

Michael Shanks gives us the lowdown on his latest project, which premieres this weekend. PLUS: His thoughts on SGU.

A brief excerpt:

... GateWorld talked exclusively with Shanks during his appearance at Creation Entertainment’s Vancouver Stargate Convention this month. During our conversation with him, he talked about the film [Living Out Loud] and how proud he was of it.
“I saw a copy of it. It’s very good! Gail is wonderful in it!” Shanks said. “After doing so much stuff that’s based in borrowed concepts, and saving the world and saving the universe, and trying to save your butt from the villain kind of thing. To do just a sort of simple slice of life family story with kids and home and mortgage and blah, blah, blah is a nice departure. And it’s a good movie...“

'Living Out Loud' airs Saturday, May 2 '09 at 9pm on The Hallmark Channel.

Stargate Universe / SG1 - SciFi Wire: Michael Shanks dishes Stargate Universe

At SciFi Wire:

Michael Shanks dishes Stargate Universe, other projects

By Ian Spelling
04/29/09

Former Stargate SG-1 star Michael Shanks told SCI FI Wire that he's busy with a wide variety of projects, including a dramatic TV movie, a pilot with Donald Sutherland and Jacqueline Bisset and, of course, a Stargate adventure.

Shanks spoke exclusively with SCI FI Wire last week about his slate; following is an edited version of that interview. Stargate Universe debuts with a two-hour premiere in October on SCI FI. (Spoilers ahead!)

A brief excerpt:

Your latest TV movie is Living Out Loud, which will air May 2 on the Hallmark Channel. That sounds like a major departure for you. Give us the set-up and a sense of your character.
Shanks: The story is about a family, or more specifically a woman played by Gail O'Grady. She's a music teacher, and I play her husband, and one day she wakes up to find that she has breast cancer. Obviously, there are ramifications for her and her husband and their two kids. There's a paradigm shift in her life and in the family's life that her illness causes, and it's all about how a catalyst can cause change in people's lives for the better. I don't want to call it a feel-good cancer movie, but it is a feel-good cancer movie that teaches the characters to live life for life's worth and to not go through the motions anymore. It's a touching story.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WHEN THE MUSIC FALLS FLAT, STAY SHARP

THREE-TIME EMMY® NOMINEE GAIL O’GRADY AND MICHAEL SHANKS STAR IN ‘LIVING OUT LOUD,’ A HALLMARK CHANNEL ORIGINAL MOVIE PREMIERING MAY 2

A shocking change in a woman’s life inspires those around her to reconsider what’s really important to them in “Living Out Loud,” a Hallmark Channel Original Movie premiering Saturday, May 2 (9/8c). Three-time Emmy® nominee Gail O’Grady (“Desperate Housewives,” “American Dreams”) stars in the family drama that reminds us that it’s never too late to live a life without fear or regrets.

Emily Marshall (O’Grady) is a high school chorus teacher who is all about helping others achieve their goals, having abandoned her own years before as a youthful fantasy. But a visit to the doctor throws Emily for a loop when she is diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. She starts chemotherapy treatment right away, leaving her husband Brad (Michael Shanks, “Stargate SG-1”) to take care of Melissa (Jessica Amlee, “Heartland”) and Ben (Alex Ferris, “The L Word”), their children he’s been too busy with work to get to know. Through her treatment sessions, Emily befriends a number of other women, including Connie (Babz Chula, “The French Guy”), whose strong will and optimistic attitude inspire Emily to start writing songs again, a hobby she let go of when she started her family. In turn, Emily’s new found strength becomes an inspiration to those around her.

“Living Out Loud” is a Randolph Films Production in association with Blueprint Entertainment, MY Entertainment and Jack Grossbart Productions. John Morayniss, Noreen Halpern, Ira Pincus, Michael Yudin and Jack Grossbart are the executive producers, and Randolph Cheveldave is the producer. Anne Wheeler directed from a script by Pamela Wallace.
