Stargate SG1 / Atlantis - GateWorld: Michael Shanks Audio Interview

At GateWorld:

NEW VOYAGES

GateWorld talks with Michael Shanks

Beware minor SPOILERS for the Atlantis two-parter, "First Contact" and "The Lost Tribe," in the interview [at GateWorld]!

Even after Stargate SG-1's cancellation, and the successful release of the first two in a series of planned SG-1 DVD movies, Michael Shanks continues to remain in the public eye. In addition to his current recurring role in the series Burn Notice, the actor returns to the role that truly launched his career when the character of Dr. Daniel Jackson comes to Atlantis in the mid-season two-parter, "First Contact" and "The Lost Tribe."

GateWorld's Chad Colvin sat down with Michael at the end of August, while Shanks was a guest at Creation Entertainment's Chicago Stargate Convention. In the interview, Michael discusses his final thoughts on Continuum, the Atlantis episodes in which he features, his memories of Don S. Davis, Burn Notice, and Rage of Angels!

GateWorld's interview with Michael runs nine minutes. Listen online at your leisure, download it to your MP3 player, or subscribe now to the iTunes podcast! The full interview is also transcribed [at the link above].

A brief excerpt:

GW: Fans are looking forward to seeing you in the upcoming two-parter on Atlantis with "First Contact" and "The Lost Tribe." How easy was it stepping back into Daniel's shoes after such a long period between the end of Continuum's filming and now?
MS: You know what? Daniel is like a comfy sweater. It's never too difficult. As long as the writers can remember how to write for him, the voice comes really easily to me. It was odd with such a big break to step into that character, stepping into a different world, to not have the usual players from SG-1 there but to actually go to Atlantis after not playing the character for close to a year was a little bit odd. But fortunately, in regards to Daniel's fast talking, David Hewlett managed to warm me up relatively quickly.

Daniel's Continuum

GateWorld talks with Michael Shanks

Life after Stargate SG-1 cancellation goes on for Dr. Daniel Jackson, as Michael Shanks returns to the role in this year's two DVD movies -- Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. Now that both films are available, we wanted to catch up with the actor once again to get his thoughts on these two projects.

GateWorld's Chad Colvin actually sat down with Michael in April, just hours after he had sat down to watch Continuum with the cast, crew, and a handful of fans from Creation Entertainment's Vancouver Stargate convention. In the interview he talks about both DVD movies and Daniel's role in those stories, and also gives us a status update on Rage of Angels, his upcoming project with former co-star Christopher Judge.

GateWorld's interview with Michael runs 8 minutes. Listen online at your leisure, download it to your MP3 player, or subscribe to the iTunes podcast. The full interview is also transcribed [at the link above]!

A brief excerpt:

GW: If you could give one message to Stargate fans, what would it be?

MS: Thank you! Thank you for staying with us. Seeing that movie and being with fans of the franchise in that theatre. Seeing the reactions to it shows that there still is the love for those characters. That there still is a future for it. I think with "Ark of Truth" people went "Oh…okay…that's it. I guess we're done telling SG-1 stories now," and seeing this story that way. Seeing the reactions of people showed that we still very much have a future in this. And it's been a lovely ride. The fans are the reason we do it, and without them, we wouldn't be anything. So, thank you.

SCI FI PI

Teal'c Cuts Loose: The Ultimate Christopher Judge Interview - Part Two

INTERVIEWS

Wednesday, June 18
by Captain

Christopher Judge is a man who's quick with a laugh, and with a deep resonant voice, it's a booming one at that. Booming. He's not shy of the occasional considered opinion, either.

But for all his success, he is laid back, relaxed and personable, and holds no airs or graces - in fact, the most refreshing and surprising thing about him is his utter candour - as you'll see in Part Two of SCI FI PI's epic interview with the man who is Teal'c.

In this installment, he speaks about (among other things) race relations, Stargate:Continuum, the war in Iraq, Michael Shanks' uncanny impersonations, golf, and why he should have been fired from Stargate SG-1. Something for everyone, really.

Grab another cup of coffee, and read on.

STARGATE:CONTINUUM, UNIVERSE & FEATURE FILMS

Comes in handy as an actor. For you though at the beginning, not that much of an issue - although as the show went on, you had to remember more and more lines.

CJ: "When Rick (Richard Dean Anderson) slowed his schedule down in Season 7, when Lou Gossett was on, and Teal'c became an orator, I would look at this stuff - 'this one scene is more than Teal'c talked in three seasons!' (laughs).

It was weird, because that muscle had kind of atrophied, and it took me a while to restimulate it. It was tough for a while."

What was it like 'going back' to Continuum? Did you have to return to a 'bad guy' place?

CJ: "Well the perception of Teal'c before SG-1 entered the scene was that he was a bad guy, but he had been talking to Bra'tac for years (about rebelling against the evil Goa'uld), but he had to keep the facade of the status quo in order to have these back room machinations going on - so in Continuum it was much the same thing - only Teal'c aligned himself with Ba'al, because Ba'al offered him a chance to free his people. So it's still the same endgame, just a different route to get there."

INTERVIEWS - Teal'c Cuts Loose : The Ultimate Christopher Judge Interview

Saturday, May 31

by Captain

Christopher Judge is instantly recognisable to Sci Fi fans. For ten years, his role as Teal'c on Stargate SG-1 has resonated with audiences the world over. But Christopher Judge the actor is no stoic Jaffa warrior - in fact, the reality could not be further from the truth.

Larger than life, quick to laugh and quick witted, he brings an air of enthusiasm to everything he does.

On a recent trip to the Southern Hemisphere as a guest of First Contact Conventions, he stopped for a moment in between a whirlwind visit to Sydney and Wellington to have a heart-to-heart chat with SCI FI PI.

He talked about pretty much everything you could imagine, from his darkest fears, the highs (and lows) of Stargate, his experience as a writer, the two new Stargate films, his upcoming new series, Rage of Angels, all the way to golf with the kids.

Surprisingly candid and approachable, this is the first part of an epic two part (possibly even three part) interview with 'the world's most recognisable black man', Christopher Judge.

Grab a cup of coffee, and read on.

**snippage**

FROM ACTOR TO WRITER

But now of course, you have the experience of being a Sci Fi writer - where they expect you to know stuff that you're making up as you go along! Fans will know that you worked on several episodes as a writer, specifically with Jaffa storylines, but this has given you many opportunities, including your new show, Rage of Angels.

CJ: "I was kind of a cut-up the first five years, and I think I was having too good a time. Brad Wright and I were always very good friends and he knew that I always wanted to go more the writer/producer route and he said to me 'why don't you get serious and write something?' anything? well, come in with a couple of pitches and we'll see what you've got.

We'd always had pitches for shows about Amazons, but they always seemed a bit like Wonder Woman type of thing, so I came up with concept of these women under one particular God who so wanted warriors that he would kill off the children until he got a boy - which lead to one of their princesses spiriting their children away and so on.

The way a normal story is written - you pitch an idea, if the writers like it, then they all sit in a room and they break the story. Break the beats, break the acts, break everything. And then you basically write the dialogue. I asked Brad - 'would you mind if I didn't do that, because I would really like a real assessment if I have a future in this or not'. And he said 'sure'.

So I actually turned it in early. Then we went on summer hiatus and I didn't hear anything from Brad or Martin Wood, who I'd also given a copy to, and also to John Smith. And nothing. So I'm just sitting there thinking 'guess I'm an actor'...

Then on the Saturday before we were to go back to work, there were three messages on my phone. And they swear they didn't talk. Brad, Martin and John each saying how much they enjoyed it, blah blah blah. Structurally, Brad definitely fixed that, but for the most part, we pretty much shot what I wrote, which I learned is not the way it always happens. As a writer, especially as a TV writer or film writer, you can't be 'married' to the work or take it personally. The whole thing, I really owe to Brad Wright. Even Rage of Angels.

We were at Martin Wood's wedding, we had gone outside for a smoke - well I was smoking - and he said, 'if this show ever ends, what are you gonna do?'. And I said 'I'd really like to star in an hour drama, not a sitcom, and have it be viable'. And he said 'you know you're going to have to write it yourself - no network is out looking for that'.

And I said 'yeah, I kinda figured that'. So the week of the 200th episode, that's when we learned we were cancelled. Four days later I had written Rage of Angels."

Michael Shanks - RTL2 (German TV) - Video Interview

From RTL2 (German TV):

http://www.rtl2.de/15510.html

A video interview filmed during FEDCON XVII in Bonn, Germany (April 18-20 '08), that is divided into two segments.

FEDCON XVIII will also be in Bonn, Germany, on May 1-3 2009.

For those who are not able to view the video interview, I've typed quick transcripts (this is NOT verbatim): Interview video #1 (approximately 3:01 [minutes] in length)

RTL2: So nice that you are here, Michael Shanks, from Stargate. Is this a first time at a German convention for you?

Michael Shanks: "No, actually, this is I think my fourth. I've been to Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Hamburg...so I think this is my fourth German convention. Where are we now? In Bonn, yes, thank you."

RTL2: Are German fans different than the fans in other countries, like in Asia or the USA?

MS: "I would say they're in general -- that they're a lot more passionate about their show than in America. I've never been to Asia, so I'm not really sure about that market. So I'd say they're very similar to the UK in their passion for their genre shows. So, I think that that differs from the American audience."

RTL2: If you go back to yesterday, when you entered the stage for the first time here in Bonn, and to see the faces of 6,000 people applauding and crying for you, so what kind of emotional feelings for you?

MS: "I hope to say I'm not getting used to it, but it's always great. Every time I do it it's always an interesting experience, because I never have the same reaction to an audience, they're always their own unique animal. I think this audience is very similar in that way. It's always great. It's flattering you know. What are you supposed to do, smile and nod and answer the questions the best you can."

RTL2: How do you feel after ten years of Stargate, what kind of memories do you have? What kind of highlights maybe in ten years of Stargate?

MS: "Oh boy! Uhm, there's a lot...I mean, there's a lot. Ten years of doing anything. We shoot the show nine months a year. There's a lot of memories. I mean, you know, empires have risen and fallen in the decade that we've done the show.

You know, people had entire careers in the real world, and with us it's no different. Babies have been born -- somebody did a count, and there was like 40 something babies on the set of Stargate. There were numerous deaths, not only people who worked on the show, but of relatives and things like that.

Almost every episode that we we've done is marked by some occurrence where you can always say, 'Hey, I remember.' That's when 9/11 happened. We were filming that ("Menace"). Or that's when Rick's (Richard Dean Anderson) dad passed away ("Lifeboat"). Or that's when I had my appendix taken out ("Crystal Skull").

Everything is kind of marked in some way by some occurrence and you can always -- you know, little secrets -- this is where Rick was written light in this episode because his daughter was born ("Spirits"), or this is when Daniel was written light because my daughter was born ("A Matter of Time") during that time.

This is where I asked for time off because another child was born ("Line in the Sand"). So there's all sorts of "in" jokes in the history of the show that go along with the making of it for ten years. The memories are too bountiful to pick just a couple of them."

From interview video # 2 (approximately :58 (seconds) in length):

RTL2: What are your new projects after Stargate?

MS: "Oh boy. In about a week I start filming a movie called "The Last Treasure of the Grand Canyon" in my old home town of Kamloops (Canada), which is doubling as the Grand Canyon. After that, I do a couple of episodes of Stargate Atlantis. And then Christopher Judge and I are carrying on producing, or trying to get produced, the script's been sold, for our project "Rage of Angels," which is a fantasy story where angels have battled it out on Earth. Where Christopher will be playing the Arch Angel Gabriel and I will be playing Lucifer. So hopefully that will be on television hopefully, but now we're hearing that they want to turn it into a feature. So we'll have to wait and see."

RTL2: And what comes next for you? Maybe a guest role for you in Stargate Atlantis season five?

MS: "As I was saying before, in about three weeks I start filming two guest spots on Stargate Atlantis. And I have no idea what they planned for the character in that. But if they kill him, for good, I'm going to be very angry."

Stargate SG1 - GateWorld: Judging Truth

From GateWorld:

http://gateworld.net/interviews/judging_truth.shtml

(Please follow the link for the complete GateWorld two-page interview with Christopher Judge.)

Judging Truth

GateWorld talks with Christopher Judge

It was just at the beginning of the Ori story arc that GateWorld last talked with Christopher Judge. It seems fitting that we chat with him again just shortly after the Ori storyline is dealt with in the just-released DVD feature, Stargate: The Ark of Truth.

The actor has kept himself particularly busy in the months since Stargate: Continuum finished shooting. Not only is he in full pre-production of his new series Rage of Angels, he is performing the bigger task of being a father for the fourth -- and in some ways the first -- time.

We also chat about his recent appearance in the Stargate Atlantis episode "Midway," poke a bit of fun in the general direction of Teal'c's gray streak, and brave the murky waters of the overall religious messages from Seasons Nine, Ten, and Ark of Truth.

A brief excerpt:

GW: Let's go back to The Ark of Truth for a couple minutes. Tell us about filming the scenes in the mountains.

CJ: It was terrifying. When I read it I thought "Oh, it'll be cool. I'll be in the green screen. They're going to have some beautiful mountains behind me." Coop [Writer/Director Robert C. Cooper] goes to my trailer and he's like "How do you feel about heights?"

My claustrophobia is very much a matter of record. Any time there's anything -- "Do you have a phobia of this?" "What do you think about heights?" I was like, "Well, Coop, I don't know. What are you talking about?"

"How would you feel about taking a helicopter up to the Sisters Mountains, filming up there and doing all this stuff practical?" I said, "Wait a minute, so do you want me alone in nature?" [Laughter]

Christopher Judge Previews His Return to Stargate!

by Ileane Rudolph

Less than a year after Stargate finished its 10-season run, Christopher Judge — who plays the muscle-bound alien Teal'c — is returning to the franchise on Stargate Atlantis (tonight at 10 pm/ET, Sci Fi). Judge talked to us about keeping up with a kid half his age, getting "back in the sandbox" and his new project.

TV Guide: So how did your visit to Stargate Atlantis come about?

Christopher Judge: It's something that the fans have talked about for a long time — probably since the Ronon character [played by Jason Momoa] first appeared. When they approached me about it, I said, "Sure." Then they said, "You'll have a few fight scenes with Ronon, because the fans would love that." And I said, "Well, you know Jason is almost 20 years younger than Chris." I had seen his previous fight work and I didn't think I could keep up. When they said they'd get me a stunt double, stupidly my pride took hold of me. So we started working out, and I was like, "What am I doing? This kid's twice as fast as I am!"

**snippage**

TV Guide: You do look good. What's the project?

Judge: I've got a new show called Rage of Angels. We were supposed to go to camera, but unfortunately we didn't have the last bits of the deal done before the writers' strike came. We always thought we could do it under the Canadian writers' guild contract, but they rejected it because I'm an American, to show support for the American writers' guild. My partner is Brad Turner, a producer of 24, it's for MGM and [Michael] Shanks is starring alongside me. I play the archangel Gabriel. And Michael plays Lucifer. [Laughs] We're shooting a two-hour movie/pilot.

TV Guide: Which will air where?

Judge: Not Sci Fi. [Laughs] It will be one of the broadcast networks. We also have a $20 million miniseries over at AMC. It's based on an all-black regiment in World War I, made up of jazz musicians. They were sent to Europe to entertain the troops but were put on the front lines. They were celebrated throughout Europe and ignored when they came home.

Michael Shanks Visits Eureka and Returns to the Stargate

by Ileane Rudolph

For those who missed Michael Shanks battling a ginormous man-eating serpent last weekend in MegaSnake, Sci Fi's latest cheese-filled movie, not to worry. The actor who played Stargate SG-1's hunky brainiac Daniel Carter for a decade is now paying a visit to the genius town Eureka on Sept. 25 (Tuesdays at 9 pm/ET, Sci Fi). TVGuide.com caught the Canadian actor at the tail end of his vacation "playing dad” to his three kids, and invited him to share with us tidbits about that gig, the upcoming SG-1 DVD movies, and more.

TVGuide.com: Both you and your wife, SG-1 colleague Lexa Doig, have Eureka gigs. Hers is the week before. How did that come about?

Michael Shanks: She auditioned first. She knew the director from Andromeda — Michael Robison — so it was a bit of a shoo-in for her. She came back from a couple days' work and was raving about the experience and the cast. Then we flew off to Toronto for a vacation and while I was there, they offered me a role for the following episode. It just worked out bang-bang, in that kind of way.

**snippage**

TVGuide.com: Share some tidbits about both upcoming SG-1 movies.

Shanks: We had a way bigger budget than we ever did for the series, so the action scenes will be that much better. And the fans will definitely be happy with the way we wrap up the series in The Ark of Truth. It reintroduces our villains that we created during the last two years, and we deal with them in a very climactic way. It's a good payoff.

**snippage**

TVGuide.com: What's happening with the Rage of Angels pilot you and Judge were developing?

Shanks: We have a verbal greenlight from MGM, but we're waiting for Brad Turner, who worked with us for years on SG-1, and who's now a supervising producer on 24, to have a window of opportunity to direct. That may not be until next year.

TVGuide.com: So which angels do you play?

Shanks: He's Gabriel, the archangel, and I will be playing Lucifer.

TVGuide.com: Lucifer. That's juicy. How do you prep for that evildoer?

Shanks: You know, that's the $10,000 question. I think Lucifer is just a guy with daddy issues.

Stargate SG-1 - Part 2 Christopher Judge Interview

From MultiChannel News' TV Crush:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Posted by Mary McNamara on August 20, 2007

Aside from Turner's association, Judge said several times that another key selling point for the project is the participation of Michael Shanks (Stargate SG-1's Dr. Daniel Jackson) as Lucifer. “We’re walking into a network with two guys from the longest running scifi show in history whose show is still making product,” he pointed out.

According to Judge, SG-1 still has several more seasons to air in some of those aforementioned 140 countries, "But now,” he said, “we’re bringing in a new product with two actors that already have recognition in those countries, so our only burden is to be good.”

**snippage**

Judge’s knows what he wants and he's clear about his approach - it’s Touched by An Angel Meets 300. “We're going to recreate the war of the heavens and it will probably be one of the bloodiest battles that's ever been shown on television. I thought it needed to be shot very much the way 300 was shot,” said Judge, although he acknowledged that the undertaking is ambitious. “That's never been attempted on TV. The perception is: it's too costly, too time consuming.”
