... CinemaSpy: Atlantis' visual effects are really first-rate. It must be an overwhelming workload season to season. Talk about how your department works to deliver consistently exciting effects for the series week after week.

Mark Savela: Basically what we do is get the scripts for each episode, break them down for all the visual effects in them, and then we have a content meeting with all the departments involved. Then we have another visual effects meeting where we go through all of it with the director and the producers and the writers...and go through our budget. And then about four or five days later we have a production meeting and a tech survey, where we go through all the shots on set and on location and see how we're gonna shoot specific shots.

After that, we shoot for about seven days, with a couple of days of second unit, then the director does his cut of an episode; the producers do their cut; we get our quotes from all our outside vendors...and then we spot the shows with the producers. Then we start work, delivering temps for the sound for the visual effects—something that's as close to accurate timing as we can get...and then we deliver finals at the end.

And we work well ahead. At any one time we're working on twelve episodes at a time, all at various stages.
