Alaina Huffman on the 'Stargate Universe' Season Finale, Season Two, and More

by Mike Moody, posted May 21st 2010

Life is tough aboard Destiny, the wandering spaceship that's home to the crew of Syfy's 'Stargate Universe.' The food is bad, the morale is low, and there's always a chance that a gang of creepy blue aliens will attack the ship or kidnap you from your quarters.

Life is even tougher for Tamara Johansen, aka T.J., played by Alaina Huffman. She's the ship's only medic, she had an affair with her commanding officer, and she's also pregnant. That last storyline came about due to Huffman's real-life pregnancy (she had a baby girl last December), which the 'SGU' team decided to work into the show.

I spoke with Huffman recently about T.J.'s pregnancy, the fan reaction to the show, and about what we could expect from the first season finale and the upcoming second season of 'SGU.' Click through for the goods, and to find out if she plans to slip back into that tight leather costume again to play Black Canary on 'Smallville.'

A brief excerpt:

Are you satisfied with how the season ends and what do you think fans will think about the finale?
AH: "I think they'll be pleased. There's some 'Stargate' mythology, and I think the fans will like that. There's stuff that blows up and there's guns that fire, so I think that will please the fans. And then more than that, I think because we did the work to develop the characters and the relationships, all of those things pay off when things blow up. And when we travel through the gate, it's not just about traveling through the gate. It's about "why are these people traveling through the gate to do this?" And that's the depth you get because we've developed the characters..."

As plot devices go, those communication stones are awfully convenient. Instead of being stuck with a group of refugees on a ship that is moving farther away from Earth after every planetary pit stop, the stones let the gang interact with franchise vets Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks back in the known universe, which is good news since it seems like Col. Telford may be in cahoots with the Lucian Alliance.

Colin Hanks admits frustration over looking like his dad

Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks

Just because you’re the son of an international superstar who has more accolades under his belt than you have years doesn’t mean life is going to be easy, especially if you’re going to follow in his footsteps.

It’s hard not to notice how much Colin Hanks resembles, talks like and even acts like his father, Tom, and it’s something that’s been a source of frustration for the younger Hanks since the 32-year-old broke into an acting career.

But now with new Fox cop dramedy The Good Guys on the horizon and a wedding ring on his finger, Hanks might have found a role to break free from his father’s shadow. (Check out our feature story on the show and co-star Bradley Whitford's awesome moustache here.)

TVGuide.ca caught up with the actor at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif., this past January to chat about his genes, his stint on Mad Men, and of course, being a “Good Guy.”

A brief excerpt:

TVG: In all seriousness, I know I cracked a joke earlier about how much you look like your dad, but is there a frustration for you in having a famous father and trying to break out on your own?
CH: Well, I could get frustrated all I want, but it sure as hell isn’t going to change anything. It sort of is what it is and there was a period there where it became extremely frustrating because it was never a big issue for me, and so to constantly have it come up, I sort of felt like, ‘Yes, that’s fascinating. I’ve been doing this for a while now,’ as I got older and it kept coming up. I know it’s interesting for people and there’s really nothing I can do about it. There’s nothing I really need to do about it.

Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy Talks About Fringe

Photobucket

In part two of Fringe‘s second season finale, Over There, Part 2 (airing Thursday, May 20th @ 9:00 p.m. EST/PST on Fox), sacrifices will be made and both universes may never be the same again after Walter (John Noble) and Olivia (Anna Torv) visit the “other side.” Leonard Nimoy reprises his recurring role as Dr. William Bell in this episode. The actor, who has announced his retirement from both acting and directing, recently spoke with myself along with other journalists about his work on the episode as well as other topics. The following is an edited version of that Q & A. Enjoy!

A brief excerpt:

I’m wondering what it is that brought you to appear on Fringe. Are you watching this show? Did somebody approach you about being on there? Was there a specific role set up for you?
LEONARD NIMOY - I had a wonderful time working on the new Star Trek movie with J.J. Abrams, who directed it. When it was done, he asked me to look into the possibility of playing William Bell on Fringe. I was frankly not terribly aware of what it was all about. I began looking at some episodes that William Bell, the character, had been talked about rather frequently, but had never been seen. I felt that I owed J.J. a favor. He did a great job on the Star Trek movie and treated me extremely well. I’m very happy I did it. The work on Fringe has turned out to be exciting and interesting. It’s a terribly well produced series. The character was a wide open canvas for me to work with. I had a great time doing it. This week’s episode is particularly special for the William Bell character...

Why Sanctuary's Amanda Tapping feels like she's finally arrived

By Ian Spelling
ON 05/18/10

Check out our exclusive interview with Amanda Tapping, star of the series she calls "the little show that could"—Syfy's Sanctuary.
"I started out not a huge sci-fi fan when I started doing Stargate SG-1 13 years ago," says Tapping. "And now I am. Now I think that's probably what I watch more than anything."

Watch to find out why the series' 20-episode season makes the star feel like she's arrived, and what surprises the bigger story arc will deliver.
