Exclusive Interview: 'Stargate' Exec Happy in Vancouver

Brad Wright talks about shooting sci-fi in Canada

By Blaine Kyllo | Sunday, July 27, 2008

Vancouver’s film and television production industry has had its ups and downs. After surging for the last ten years it’s declined recently, suffering from a less appealing exchange rate between the Canadian loonie and the American greenback, and because of the worldwide industry’s slowdown since last winter’s writers’ strike.

“There is definitely less production going on right now,” writer-producer Brad Wright admitted in a phone interview. The strike and the exchange, he said from his office at Vancouver’s Bridge Studios, has “had an affect on this town. There is less television being made.”

Wright’s first movie, Stargate: Continuum, releases on DVD and Blu-ray on July 29. It’s a time travel tale in which the Stargate program gets erased by the meddling of a long-time enemy, Ba'al, and forces the SG-1 team to set things right, and prevent Earth from falling into the hands of the Goa’uld.

“Why leave, at this point?” quipped Wright, who admitted he’s trying to ride out the dollar. “I can’t imagine that it’s going to stay that way forever...”

‘Broken Ties’ sees Ronon Dex flung somewhere we never thought he’d go – to the dark side.

A brief excerpt:

...‘Broken Ties’ gave Momoa a chance to explore the idea of Ronon as a bad guy. Knowing how powerful the character is, the idea of Ronon as a servant of the Wraith is really quite terrifying. Sure enough, when he lets go, the results are shocking. The fight scenes in this episode are some of the biggest ever choreographed by stunt coordinator James Bamford, and really gave the actor a chance to show what he could do.

“They’re huge,” Momoa agrees, “the biggest so far. We trained really hard for it. It was fun – Ronon has a drug inside him that makes him super-strong, and it’s fun to play that...”

Supernatural Scores X-citing Guest Star For Season 4

X-Files vet Mitch Pileggi [Col. Caldwell on Stargate Atlantis), who may (or may not) have just appeared in the series' latest movie, already has a new gig lined up for fall — as a guest on Supernatural.

Speaking at the raucous Supernatural panel at Comic-Con, series creator Eric Kripke offered some scoop for the ravenous audience when pressed about upcoming guests. Pileggi will be appearing in Season 4 as Mary's father — thus, Sam and Dean's pappy!

Battlestar Jampacks Episodes

The second half of the fourth and final season of SCI FI Channel's original series Battlestar Galactica promises fans a number of extra-long, jampacked episodes as it works toward the climactic finale, executive producer David Eick told fans at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 26.

In a subsequent interview, Eick told SCI FI Wire that producers have been "able to convince the network to let us air ... long episodes--[to] take single episodes and make them double episodes, ... [and to take] double episodes and make them quadruple episodes."

Eick added: "Our episodes are always ... long, and we're constantly getting into the editing room with 10, 15, sometimes 20 minutes of material that you can't get into an episode." With just a half-season remaining, Eick said, "the story has become so critical in order to realize the arc of the series that we can't just cut stuff out and save it for later or push it 'til next year, the stuff we're used to doing. It's all got to be there..."

Stargate: The Ark of Truth - Robert C. Cooper Answers Fans Questions

July 27, 2008: Writer/Director/Executive Producer Robert C. Cooper Answers Your Ark of Truth Questions - And Then Some!

Hey, look who's here! It's writer/director/executive producer/show creator/golfer/expert barbecuer Robert C. Cooper - and he's got answers to all of your burning questions (provided, of course, you took the time to post said questions last week). Before handing things over to Rob, I'd like to dedicate today's blog entry to
birthday girl Rebecca T. who, I'm sure more than anything, wants to know what was up with those replicators. Rob…?

**snippage**

Regarding teal'c vs. tomin as to who did more to feel guilty about, i.e. who caused more pain, suffering and death, some say teal'c did worse things than tomin. what's your opinion?

RCC: I don't know if guilt of that depth can really be measured on any stick or scale. I think Teal'c and Tomin both did equally terrible things. However, Teal'c did them for a much longer period of time. Still, you're essentially talking about the distinction between killing one person or two. You can't undo either.

Cam and Sam have always had a "sibling relationship" to me. Is this how you see them? Was the scene between them in the infirmary (AoT) supposed to be so flirty or was that a direction the actors took it?

RCC: As I mentioned earlier, I think Sam and Cam's relationship was cemented nicely in Line in the Sand. That is why I recalled the macaroon scene written by Alan McCullough. I meant for it to demonstrate the bond they had formed. Sometimes the actors take things in certain directions and it works. In this case, I think the scene walked the line between flirty and genuine affection for a close friend.
