Battlestar Galactica - Starburst Magazine 365 - Michael Trucco Interview

At Visimag:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview excerpt.)

Feature: Battlestar Galactica (2000s) - Identity Crisis

Hero, celebrity, husband... Cylon! Now Anders’s secret is in the open, can he dare to hope for a better future? Actor Michael Trucco discusses…

Some people spend half their lives trying to ‘find themselves’ and figure out their place in the world, but for professional-Pyramid-player-turned-resistance-fighter Sam Anders that seemed obvious, even as the world was turned upside down around him. At least it did, until Battlestar Galactica’s third season finale revealed that he was, in fact, a humanoid Cylon, one of the Final Five. But, with the Cylons attacking, he didn’t have time to dwell on it, as the newly trained pilot showed where his loyalties lay by flying his Viper into battle against the machines.

Shooting those combat scenes was a dream come true for the actor who plays him, Michael Trucco.
“I was like a kid in a candy store,” he enthuses. “After two seasons on the show, not to mention being a fan of Galactica, to finally get a chance to sit in a cockpit of a Viper, I mean, how cool is that. I love that the fourth season opens with a ‘bang’ and we’re right in the thick of things. Sirens are going off, lights are flashing, it’s a full-fledged attack and our heroes are throwing everything they’ve got, including Anders, at the Cylons. Coincidentally, I had done a lot of cockpit work before on a TV show about military fighter pilots called Pensacola: Wings of Gold. Almost every week our characters spent time in the cockpit and, just like Galactica, we’d have a similar shooting set-up with a mock-up plane sitting on a gimble and the camera right in front of us...

What’s on Tonight

New on cable is "Sanctuary" (Sci Fi, 9 p.m.), a series about a woman who collects fantastic and odd creatures and monsters in her castle-like home. Amanda Tapping of "Stargate SG-1" runs the place; she recruits a skeptical forensic psychiatrist played by Robin Dunne, who elicits a Harry Potter-Daniel Radcliffe vibe. Highly dependent on green screen technology, it doesn't seem like a bad series. Tonight's premiere is two hours.

Sanctuary (Sci Fi)

Series Premiere: Friday at 9pm on SCI FI

Stargate SG-1 fans will be thrilled to see Amanda Tapping (who played the brilliant Col. Samantha Carter on the SCI FI series) back in action as Dr. Helen Magnus, the (also brilliant) scientist who holds the secrets of a clandestine population -- a group of strange and sometimes terrifying beings that hide among humans. Along with her new recruit, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman, her quirky tech wiz Henry, and her fearless daughter Ashley, Magnus tries to protect this threatened phenomena and unlock the mysteries behind their existence. Viewers who go ga-ga over special effects might be interested to know that "Sanctuary" is the first series to shoot extensively on green screen, using virtual sets and amazing visual effects.

October 2, 2008: What the Future Holds (No Spoilers!)

One of the great things about doing this daily blog is that it affords me the opportunity to head off rumors and fan concerns before. Today, for example, I see many a panicked reaction to a recent Vancouver Sun article that states: "Heavy machines are smashing the Stargate Atlantis TV series' set in Bridge Studios' 40,000-square-foot effects stage."

1st Assistant Director Alex Pappas

Well - yes, it's true and, no, it's not a big deal. We're not talking about Stage 2 (that houses the wraith hive/facilities) or stage 3 (that houses the Daedalus/Apollo) or, more importantly, stage 6 (where the Atlantis gate room, control room, infirmary, Woolsey's office, and various corridors are located). We're talking about the FX Stage, the location of the (well played-out) village set, cave sets, catacombs, and one of our cafeteria views. No big loss. Hell, Stage 5 (which holds the SGC gate room, control room, briefing room, and several corridors) is still up despite the fact that SG-1 was cancelled two years ago! So, fear not. The movie will not be take place entirely on some forested planet.

Director Andy Mikita

...Finally, to those of you asking about that super, secret project I mentioned in yesterday's blog entry - Nope, it's not Stargate-related.

Well, that's it for now. Here, enjoy some non-spoilery pics from our series finale.

ICE MAN

GateWorld talks with Barry Campbell

It has been over two months since the release of Stargate: Continuum on DVD. Whether you like it or hate it, the film would not have become what it was without the contribution of one fan, Barry Campbell.

Campbell, the head of the Navy's Arctic Submarine Laboratory in San Diego, approached producers at one of Creation's official Stargate conventions and piqued their interest in visiting the North Pole. After lengthy talks, Stargate productions spent a week on the arctic ice to shoot for the second direct-to-DVD SG-1 movie.

In our interview, Barry discusses the process of negotiating to get a skeleton Stargate crew to the arctic, his respect for the team during their production shoot, elaborates on the aftermath of the accident aboard the HMS Tireless, and much more!

GateWorld's interview with Barry runs over 21 minutes. Listen online at your leisure, download it to your MP3 player, or subscribe now to the iTunes podcast! The full interview is also transcribed [at the link above]!

A brief excerpt:

GW: How many people can APLIS hold? Generally how many staff it?
BC: Nominally we had staffed up for 40 people. But when we found out that the Stargate folks were going to come up we were going to have to build two more hooches.

GW: Oh you had to build?
BC: Yeah, we had to build extra hooches. And the Navy came to me and said, "In order to keep this from being a conflict of interest we have to get those guys to pony up whatever money it would take for us to boost up the camp."

So they did. We figured out on paper what it would take to host them, to get them up there and get them back from Prudhoe Bay, to feed them, and helicopter time, and all that stuff. And we told John what the number was and he said, "Yeah, that sounds reasonable to me. We'll be willing to do that."

GW: So this wasn't pro bono?
BC: Not at all.

GW: They treated it like a location shoot?
BC: Exactly right. Exactly right. Yeah. And so we boosted the camp up. At one point this time I think we had as many as 55 people overnight. Which is quite a large camp.

X-Files' Mitch Pileggi Gramps it Up for Supernatural

It's the hour that might drop the collective jaw of Supernatural fans who think they have the CW series' mythology all figured out. "In the Beginning," airing this Thursday at 9 pm/ET, guest-stars Mitch Pileggi as Samuel Campbell, the Winchester boys' maternal grandfather. The Back to the Future-esque tale finds Dean face-to-face with not only Gramps but also his would-be parents, as light is shed on the dark truth about That Night. TVGuide.com invited Pileggi to preview his visit, reflect on his least-appreciated TV role, and ponder the prospects for X-Files 3. — Matt Mitovich

...TVGuide.com: You and Jensen Ackles have a very tense face-off at one point. Is that a scene you rehearsed and he knew exactly what you would be throwing at him, or was there some element of surprise to your performance?
Pileggi: He had no idea what I was going to be doing until I did it. It was... fun, man. [Laughs] To be quite honest, I didn't know what I was going to be doing. It kind of just "happened." Usually when I don't know what I'm doing is when I'm the happiest with it.

TVGuide.com: What lies ahead for Colonel Caldwell during this final season of Stargate Atlantis?
Pileggi: I just got done doing the final episode, and I'm still flying around the Daedelus. I'm just a cab driver. [Laughs] Just more space battles and saving Sheppard and the others...

Exclusive Interview: Mitch Pileggi of 'Supernatural'

Wednesday, October 01, 2008

I was lucky enough to attend the San Diego Comic-Con this year, where Supernatural creator Eric Kripke announced that actor Mitch Pileggi would play Mary Winchester's father on an upcoming episode of the series. Many of the geeks in the room, myself included, reached nerd nirvana when the news was announced. The man who so perfectly embodied the bad-ass Walter Skinner on The X-Files is an amazing choice to play Sam and Dean's grandfather. Viewers will get a chance to see Pileggi in the role on tomorrow night's Supernatural episode, entitled "In the Beginning."

I recently had a chance to sit down with Pileggi to discuss his role on the CW series, as well as his stints on Brothers & Sisters and Sons of Anarchy.

A brief excerpt:

What can you tell us about your character on Supernatural? I know you can't reveal too much.
"Well, I'm playing their grandfather. Castiel sends Dean back in time to -- why he sends him back in time is revealed later on at the end of the episode, but he's back in Lawrence, Kansas in 1973, and because of that he runs into his father, and his mother, and his grandparents on his mother's side. There's a lot that happens as a result of that."

Is there something in particular that keeps you coming back to the sci-fi and horror genres?
"I've always been a big fan of sci-fi and horror, and I've been a big fan of novels that are sci-fi and horror. It's what I like. It's not necessarily all I want to do, but I think because I have pretty substantial exposure in it that's why they keep thinking, let's bring Mitch into this. He's a sci-fi guy! It's all fun. In Stargate: Atlantis I get to be Captain Kirk. It's stuff I really enjoy doing..."

Amanda Tapping Gives a 'Sanctuary' Preview

What viewers and fans can expect from the Sci Fi version of 'Sanctuary'

By Mark Wilson, About.com

In advance of the premiere of Sanctuary on Sci Fi, star and executive producer Amanda Tapping talked with reporters about what viewers can expect from this incarnation of the show and how it evolved from a web-only series to a big television production...

On whether they have a multi-season plan:
"We don't actually. I'm sure that Damian [Kindler] actually in his head has a grander scheme for the whole thing. But at this stage, we've sort of started mapping out where we want certain character relationships to go.

It's that superstitious feeling of let's not plan too far ahead because we may be derailed, you know. Like let's think really intelligently how we want this series to move forward.

We don't want to be rushed into anything but also by the same token, people are like, "What would happen in Season 2?" and I'm like. "I don't want to talk about Season 2."

Let's hope next year we get a pickup for Season 2. Let's get through Season 1. Come on everybody, just calm down, calm down. I'm a bit of a fatalist.

We've all been in this industry long enough to know. I mean, I just kept thinking Stargate would get canceled and it never did. And the one year that we thought it would get picked up again we got canceled.

So I'm of the mind that I'm just going to think that -- you know, think the worst and be really pleasantly surprised. But I think Damian has a grander scheme for it. We just have to dig it out of his little brain."
