Louis Ferreira talks on set relationships, pushing character boundries and pranks

One of the best things about running a site like ColonelEz.Net is every so often I get the chance to talk to some of the great cast and crew of shows like Stargate Universe.

Recently I had the opportunity to talk to Louis Ferreira (Colonel Young) about his character, working with Robert Carlyle and the moral issues of the less than perfect character he plays.

A brief excerpt:

The first thing we chatted about was playing alongside Robert Carlyle; Louis had nothing but good things to say.
LF: “One of the main reasons I was drawn to the show to begin with was Robert Carlyle’s name, I was really impressed to hear that they were going to go a different direction & When I heard his name I immediately realized that they had to, based on the type of actor that he was.”

“Between the producer’s pitch of this sort of darker, grittier more realistic version of the show and Robert Carlyle’s name I did become super interested and was really grateful when I got the job as I think I found my brother from Scotland in Robert.”

Richard Dean Anderson from the made-for-TV movie, MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis

May 16, 2010

When Josh and Ada Cottrell were expecting their first child four years ago, they wanted to give their son a name that embodied their beliefs and stood for something attainable. They wanted their little guy to be known not so much as a dreamer but a doer.

So the Sherman Oaks couple named their son … Macgyver.
"We got a lot of flak for it," Ada says. "People would tell us, 'You're setting him up to fail.' But my husband is a 'MacGyver.' And if he's going to be anything like his daddy, which I'm sure he is, he's going to be the kind of guy who can put together a sink with a paper clip and some chewing gum and 'MacGyver' it, so it'll work."

With the "MacGyver" spoof "MacGruber" arriving in theaters Friday — and with movies, TV shows and advertisements continuing to namedrop the '80s adventure series — "MacGyver" is enjoying something of a pop culture renaissance. But that would imply that the show, which ended its seven-year network run in 1992, went away in the first place. And it never did.

"MacGyver" followed the exploits of mullet-sporting secret agent Angus MacGyver, a troubleshooter dedicated to using scientific principles (along with a lot of duct tape and his trusty Swiss Army knife) in weekly campaigns against drug lords, dictators and communists. The ABC show established its template with its pilot episode in which MacGyver, among other feats, disarmed a missile with a paper clip, stopped a sulfuric acid leak with a chocolate bar and fashioned an explosive using sodium metal and a cold capsule.
"We verified the viability of the science, but we often stretched the principles," chuckles "MacGyver" star Richard Dean Anderson who has been playing another hero in Syfy's "Stargate" franchise for much of the past decade. "That chocolate would have sealed the leak in the sulfuric acid vat. We just would have needed a half-ton of chocolate to make it work..."

David Blue: How SGU's Season Finale Will Leave You In Ruins

By Meredith Woerner

Stargate Universe's finale is only a few episodes away, and already actor David Blue wants you to be prepared for the next big twist. In our exclusive interview, Blue talks Eli's journey, Destiny's robots and new alien threats.

A brief excerpt:

Do you feel pressure to be the comic relief on such a dark show?
DB: "I don't, because everyone in the cast is so funny. The biggest clown is either Louie [Ferreira] or Jamil [Walker Smith] [Young and Greer]. They are absolute clowns, and they are a lot of fun to be around. We love to make each other laugh on set. I feel like it takes some of the pressure away. To be able to have so much fun — I feel like that carries over to the filming, a little bit. I think if anyone is missing a comedic side to the show, and I don't think a lot of people are, but if anyone is it's unfortunate because you can't inject too much humor into the situation. It's not a situation where O'Neil and Carter can take the day off and sit around in the mess. It's not a situation where you can have Rodney joking around. It's a place where people are dying every day. No one wants to be there, everyone is scared to death. If we had too many people running around joking, it would feel forced. It would seem fake in our show. It would be harder to fit. I love taking on the mantle, because I think that some of the most intelligent people in the world are some of the funniest people, that's where you find the humor in the world when you're smart enough to realize where it is. So I have a lot of fun doing it. I think they are really funny in what they write... I also think Brody [Peter Kelamis], as dry as he is, he's a hilarious character."

Alaina Huffman Video Interview STARGATE UNIVERSE and Kino 25: Drop the Sirs

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub
Posted: May 14th, 2010

If you’re a fan of Stargate Universe, you’re going to enjoy my video interview with Alaina Huffman. That’s because unlike a typical junket interview that lasts four to five minutes and you can only scratch the surface, yesterday afternoon I sat down with 1st Lt. Tamara Johansen (who she plays on SGU) for an extended interview. During our conversation she talked about how things are going on season two and what it’s really like on set, conventions, Comic-Con, twitter, being a series regular for the first time, what happened when she told the producers she was pregnant, and I also asked some questions people sent me on twitter. If you’re watching SGU, you’re going to like the behind the scenes stories.

Also, the folks at MGM have given me a new Kino to premiere and it’s the 25th one called “Drops the Sirs”. The Kino is a conversation between Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) and Scott (Matthew Scott) and it concerns a recent episode where someone was left on a planet. [This kino video at the link above.]

Amanda Tapping Still Craves The Stage

by Bryan Reesman on May.14, 2010

At the Syfy Channel Upfront in March, I chatted up Sanctuary star Amanda Tapping for a story about Season 3 that will appear on AOL’s TV Squad page in the near future. (FYI, Season 2 arrives on video on June 15, 2010.) I also managed to squeeze in a little bit about Stargate and her non-Sanctuary projects.

Here’s a short ‘n’ sweet Q&A about topics unrelated to her hit show. It is laced with the actress’ usual humility and humor. Simply put, Tapping is über-cool.

A brief excerpt:

You’ve done plenty of things outside of sci-fi. Are there any performances that you think are underrated in your career?
You know what? I feel like my career has progressed slow and steady. Things that I thought were really good back in the day, maybe not so much [now]. I look back at my work and think there’s a certain subconsciousness to it. So no, I don’t think so. There’s a movie I did called Dancing Trees, which I just thought was a really sweet film. I love the director so much. I don’t have a big part in it, and I die — well, I must say. That’s a good question. Damn!

SGU's hot doc has got some spoilers for you

Syfy's Stargate Universe has amped up the action and taken the story into intriguing directions in the second half of the first season, and smokin' hot star Alaina Huffman (who plays Lt. Tamara Johansen) teased us with the adventures to come in an exclusive interview.

SGU airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Huffman also talked a bit about her return appearance tonight on The CW's Smallville, reprising the role of Dinah Lance/Black Canary, in the season finale that airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

A brief excerpt:

It was notable right from the start of the second half of the season that the action and adventure element of the show had really been amped up. Was that a deliberate choice, you think?
Huffman: The season itself was completed almost by the time we aired. We wrapped October 28th, and it aired October 3rd. ... So, yes, I think the intent was to introduce the characters, develop the characters, and then put them to work. And that seems to be the way that it's gone.
