Stargate Atlantis - Torri Higginson Video Interview from Polaris 21 Con
From Astro Shorts:

The relationship between Science and Science Fiction is a symbiotic one, don't you think? Casey and I visited a Science Fiction convention in Toronto called Polaris 21 where we explored that relationship. What we found was that Science Fiction fans are keenly aware of the interplay between the two and had plenty to say. We have their insights in this episode of "News In Space" including an interview with Torri Higginson of Stargate Atlantis.
Of Klingons and Quasars
News In Space host Casey Dee goes to a SciFi convention to explore the unique relationship between Science and Science Fiction. Includes exclusive interviews with actors Ron Glass of Firefly, Steve Bacic of Andromeda and Torri Higginson of Stargate Atlantis.

Comicon Crazy!
Written by dgeek
Saturday, 28 July 2007
How great is it to be surrounded by over 100,000 of your own? These are my peeps! These are the Comicon geeks!
We've just done a massive Stargate Atlantis panel for about 4000 fans here in sunny, sweaty San Diego and signed a few hundred posters for those that could stand the heat of the endless line-ups. I couldn't hear a damn thing on the panel. So, instinct kicked in and I took the defensively smiling meerkat stance of polite attention with a slight edge of alertness for danger. No problem hearing the questions from the floor, just impossible to make out the words of anyone on the
stage with me...perhaps it's better that way ;-)
**snippage**
A Dog's Breakfast is being beautifully flaunted on the "other" side of all the Stargatge Atlantis posters, with trailers blaring from the MGM booth (so I'm told...they won't let me out there!).

Alas, I don’t have time to go into detail (that will have to wait until tomorrow’s blog) but both panels went well. Not all that much in the way of hard-hitting questions with the exception of one that went Rob Cooper's way: “Why do you hate doctors?” His response “I don’t hate doctors, just Scottish people” was met with a healthy chorus of boos. When it came time for the Atlantis panel, I made it a point to inform the gathering: “I’d just like to go on record and say I love Scottish people.” Cheers. “To all you Scots, please direct all hate mail to Robert Cooper. My inbox is full.

I walked around the convention floor for a while, met comic book writer Joe Kelly and said hi (loved his run on Deadpool), snapped some pics, then joined Martin Wood and Ben Browder to make an impromptu appearance at the Stargate Offworld Fandom get-together, a small fan gathering.
...In the meantime, I never had to check my List of Things Not to Talk About at Comic Con, so those particular spoilers remain safe and sound. But for the hell of it, I reprint my list here. Don’t tell anyone:
1. Sheppard battles evil Sheppard and gets his ass kicked all over the gate room – DO NOT DISCUSS
2. The big live-action Space Invaders sequence – DO NO REVEAL
3. The hidden replicator sub-routine, taking it to “the next step”, Teal’c and Ronon face off – DO NOT MAKE PUBLIC
4. The Return of Carson Beckett – SUPER TOP SECRET

Thursday Comic-Con report: Crowds, capes and crusted salmon
By April MacIntyre Jul 27, 2007, 15:43 GMT
Comic-Con is an unusual event, in that you really need to seek out what it is you are interested in, and manoeuvre tens of thousands of people while doing it.
Not my favorite pastime, navigating crowds. But the excitement and rare gems unearthed make it a fun time, none the less.
The best part of Thursday was the finale of a lovely dinner overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla at George's restaurant with Stargate Atlantis's executive producer and showrunner, Joe Mallozzi. He snapped a photo essay of all our beautiful plates that hit the table. The photos will be up on his blog later.

`BATTLESTAR GALACTICA': INSIDE THE HATCH
Actor and novelist Richard Hatch gives fans the `BSG' A-Z (Apollo-Zarek)
By David Winnick
Posted July 27, 2007 4:30 PM
Fans of "Battlestar Galactica" were in for a treat yesterday at the San Diego Convention Center when Richard Hatch made an appearance to moderate a panel about the series. Hatch, who played Captain Apollo, in the original series now portrays the manipulative politician Tom Zarek on the new show. Television, however is not the only contribution that Hatch has made to the "Battlestar Galactica" mythos; he has also written a series of novels that further expand the tales of the Galactica and its crew.
Hatch was joined on the panel by composer Bear McCreary, scientific advisor Dr. Kevin Grazer and writers Brad Liaweaver and Mark Verheiden.
**snippage**
When the clip had finished, the floor was opened for questions while the next video was being cued up. During the Q&A Grazer made a point of apologizing for a comment that he made at last year's panel, stating that the worst of all science he has ever seen on a show was in "Stargate." What he really intended to say was that it was
actually in "Armageddon." This brought up questions about which was scientifically more inaccurate, "Armageddon" or "The Day After Tomorrow"? Grazer responded to this by saying that he refused to see "The Day After Tomorrow" after seeing a clip in which someone said that the outside temperature was dropping by ten degrees per
second. Grazer then pointed out that the temperature would hit absolute zero in under a minute.
Grazer went on to talk about the science in "Battlestar Galactica" claiming, that the only portions of the show that are technologically inaccurate are light speed and anti-gravity. He said that they actually received a lot of complaints about the death of some characters who were sucked out of an air lock. The viewers, due to
movies like "Total Recall", complained that the characters did not explode like they should have. Grazer set everyone straight though, informing the panel that in actuality a person would die but not explode, the one major place where the damage could be seen is in the eyes as the blood vessels burst.

LIVE AT THE SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON: SCI FI'S 'STARGATE SG-1'
By Brian Ford Sullivan
12:15 p.m. - So good news and bad news. The good news - the studio just held a private Q&A for the press so I'll have some exclusive "Stargate" cast member/producer quotes later tonight. The bad news - I have to bounce in the middle of the actual "Stargate" panel so I can do the same thing for "Chuck" at 1:30. Anywho, nothing earth shattering was said - but Jewel Staite made the mistake of
saying she bonded with the "Firefly" cast quicker ("They're like family," she noted), a fact that everyone else would not let go of for the entire half-hour. And Ben Browder addressed the whole Paul McGillion thing in only the way Ben Browder can.

July 27th Comic-Con Report
Written on July 27, 2007 by Vic Holtreman
I didn't make it to the Warner Bros. panel, but did get to sit in on the presentation for the upcoming direct to DVD Stargate SG-1 movies. On hand was the cast including Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Ben Browder along with director Martin Wood and producer Robert Cooper.
**snippage**
Gary Jones who played gate operator "Walter" acted as moderator. He was quite engaging and introduced a trailer for Stargate: The Ark of Truth, the DVD movie that will complete the Ori storyline. It looked pretty epic and like they pulled out all the stops.
**snippage**
Christopher Judge stated that he will be appearing in the upcoming film Rage of Angels.
The Stargate: Atlantis panel included David Hewlett, Joe Flanigan and Jewel Staite (from Serenity).

Stargate Atlantis: More NEW previews during SG1 episodes 7/27/07
I'm watching "Prometheus" on the SciFi Channel ("Unnatural Balance" follows) and the SciFi Channel just aired a brief video clip of a SGA season four episode.
Shep's behind bars again! (Or, it could be the winsome young woman is behind the bars. Hard to tell from this brief clip.)
A wyw is flirting madly with him, while promising all sorts of bad things will happen to him.
WYW: "I didn't think you'd be quite so..."
Shep: "Clever?"
WYW: "Reckless!"
SciFi Channel announcer said more previews will follow tonight.

A brief excerpt:
The final season of Stargate SG-1. At last, after five years of thinking the show was ending, after multiple "series finales," the end has arrived. Well, sort of -- with DVD movies coming in 2008, the adventure continues.
But the tenth year of SG-1 will go down in history as the team's last 20 episodes on television. One year earlier the producers tried to do something remarkable in relaunching what is essentially a new show: new team members in Cameron Mitchell and Vala Mal Doran, a new commander in General Hank Landry, and a new unstoppable enemy in the Ori. Season Nine was a year of introductions and ramping up, and as
Season Ten began the Ori armies had finally invaded our galaxy and begun to wreak havoc, using force to convert worshippers to the evil ascended beings.
The last two seasons of the show therefore stand together, as set-up and development, but without the final pay-off and closure that the movies (especially "The Ark of Truth") are going to provide. Some criticize these final 40 episodes as a shadow of what SG-1 used to be -- but, in truth, it seems to us that it is simply a different show, one that is a natural outgrowth of Jack O'Neill's SG-1.

Stargate SG1 Series 10 on DVD in UK
Friday 20th of July 2007
Stargate fans are in for a treat on Monday 13 August as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment releases two new series to add to Stargate collections. The critically-acclaimed, multi award-winning Sci-Fi adventure series Stargate SG-1, Season 10, Volume 1 and Stargate Infinity - the brand new animated action-adventure series are available to own for the first time on DVD.
Stargate Infinity follows four exceptional Air Force Academy cadets and a wrongly court-martialed Stargate veteran who must travel through the gated wormholes from one planet to the next in order to protect a mysterious alien creature from the sinister clutches of a new extraterrestrial enemy.
Stargate SG-1 Season 10 is the final adventure for the team and the last instalment in the SG1 collection. It sees the SG-1 military squad undertaking missions across the universe through the Stargates, encountering various alien creatures and cultures on their journeys as they set out on another mission to defend the earth from the unknown.
This new season is a historic one as it celebrates the 200th episode, making it the longest-running science fiction series on television, surpassing The X-Files and every series of Star Trek. Besides being the final season for Stargate SG-1, the 10th season also features the much-anticipated 200th and (final) episode, and the return of Richard Dean Anderson reprising his role as General Jack O'Neil for episode
four ("The Shroud").
It also marks the return of SG-1 favourites Carter (Amanda Tapping), Teal'c (Christopher Judge) and Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) – as well as newcomers from last season, Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder), Vala (Claudia Black), Adria (Morena Baccarin) and veteran actor, Beau Bridges who plays General Landry.
Stargate SG-1 is an action-packed sci-adventure series involving a team of U.S. Air Force soldiers and scientists who use ancient portals in space called Stargates to travel instantaneously from their Stargate Command base in the Rocky Mountains to other planets to explore, forge alliances, defuse crises, establish trade and
investigate mysteries.
Stargate SG-1 has become one of the most popular and longest running science fiction shows in television history and the DVD is packed full of `extras' including audio commentary, photo galleries and a Moving Menus, making it a must-buy for any Sci-Fi or Stargate fans.
Further volumes in the tenth series will be released between September and December this year.
Stargate SG1 is a Twentieth Century Fox Television production and has been nominated for over 60 Sci-Fi and television awards during its run.

Stargate Atlantis: GateWorld: David Hewlett Audio Interview
From GateWorld:
http://www.gateworld.net/interviews/im_with_genius.shtml
(Please follow the link to download the audio interview or read the transcription at GateWorld.)
"I'm with Genius"
He's obnoxious. He's insensitive. He's a citrus-hating jerk.
Fortunately, Dr. Rodney McKay is nothing like his real-life counterpart, actor David Hewlett. Always kind, down-to-earth and unceasingly funny, David recently welcomed us into his trailer once again on the Vancouver set of Stargate Atlantis.
In our latest interview, David talks about the big changes to come in the fourth season of Stargate Atlantis, which is now in production. He has plenty to say about working with Amanda Tapping ("Samantha Carter") on a regular basis, and about how far Rodney McKay has come in the past few years. Finally, he fills us in on his other projects, including the new independent film "A Dog's Breakfast" and the sitcom
pilot Starcrossed.
GateWorld's interview with David is available in MP3 audio format for easy listening, and runs about 33 minutes. It is also transcribed [at the site]. You can also download the interview to your MP3 player and take GateWorld with you!
<><><><><><>
A brief excerpt:
GW: Finally, what would you like to say to fans who are getting ready to tune in to Season Four this fall?
DH: Ah. Thank you for waiting so long! God, how long has it been since Season Three aired? What would I say? Make sure you go to the bathroom before you start because we've got some scary episodes coming up. You will not want to leave.
Give the new kids a chance. See what you make of them. You'll definitely enjoy the new additions, as well. And look for some familiar faces. Something like that.
But definitely, make sure, if you've got to pee, go before. Because you've got an hour of television there and you do not want to hold it that long. Because there's going to be an accident.

SGA - Fourth Season Premieres Friday, September 28th
The SciFi Channel ran a 30 second sneak peek of SGA season four during an episode of "Eureka" (at approximately 9:43pm).
Fortunately, SciFi Channel ran a small banner about 15 seconds before the sneak peek began, so those watching with their VCR's ready could hit the record button.
The banner running during the sneak peak advertised that Season 4 premieres on Friday, September 28th at 9pm.
Shown during the sneak peek were some previously seen (brief) clips of Sam and another SGA person in Atlantis looking at someone/something; Teyla (laying down) on a gurney, screaming; Dr. Keller in Atlantis looking scared; Sheppard and Ronon running in Atlantis with weapons and aiming at someone/something; Ronon in a forest, looking up; McKay in Atlantis, laying down on something (possibly a gurney, looks like an IV stand in the background), looking scared towards something; and Sam, Sheppard and others in the Atlantis Gate receiving area.
There was a brief scene from a season four episode with Sheppard, McKay, Ronon and Dr. Weir inside a Jumper. (Weir, however, didn't speak during this scene, and sat to the right [camera left] of Sheppard.)
Sheppard (piloting): "Rodney? Ready?
Rodney (standing up in the rear, with a lot of cables dropping down from the ceiling): "Did I mention that this might not work? And that we could either drop out of hyperspace prematurely and end up stranded in the middle of deep space, or quite possibly be vaporized the moment I touch that..."
Ronon (sitting behind Sheppard, growls [you can see the bandage on Ronon's right shoulder from the wound he received in "First Strike"): "Just answer the damn question!"
Rodney (resigned): "Yeah, I'm ready."
Also -- David Nykl appears in next week's episode of Eureka, 'Unpredictable,' based on the commercial that ran for next week.
In this week's episode of Eureka, 'Try, Try Again,' (which had similarities to SGA's 'Hide 'N Seek'), Barclay Hope (SG1's Colonel Pendergast), Vincent Gale (SG1's Nightwalkers), and Don Thompson (SG1's Wormhole Xtreme and Stronghold and BSG) guest starred.

Preparations for [San Diego] Comic Con are still ongoing. Last I heard, Jewel may be making an appearance as well which is great news. Martin Wood also dropped by my office to tell me Orson Scott Card will be putting in an appearance at the con. Who knows, maybe he’ll be at the Sci Fi/Entertainment Weakly party.

Latest 'Today's Air Force' addresses modernization
7/16/2007 - SAN ANTONIO (AFNEWS) -- This week's edition of "Today's Air Force" highlights Air Force initiatives to modernize the force through the introduction of new aircraft and the retirement of designated older models like the F-117 Nighthawk, the world's first stealth aircraft.
And learn how Hollywood producers work to maintain a relationship with the Air Force. Nowhere is that relationship more evident than on the set of Stargate SG-1, and the newly released movie, Transformers. One of the ways Air Force officials build a strong relationship with Hollywood is by allowing movie directors to shoot on their bases.
Plus celebrate an Air Force Week at St Louis, Mo., where the service was highlighted during various events including an enlistment ceremony of 40 men and women at a Cardinals baseball game. St Louis is one of six cities selected to celebrate the Air Force's 60th anniversary. Each Air Force Week is designed to inform and educate the public about the important roles the Air Force plays in support of the nation's defense. Next stop . . . . New England! Stay tuned for dates.
The long-format, weekly news show tells Air Force stories in more depth. The program is made up of three segments and each runs approximately eight minutes. Although each can stand alone, they are related to form a seamless program.

AP: Astronomers seek aid for galactic census

Astronomers seek aid for galactic census
By RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press Writer
Wed Jul 11, 5:35 PM ET
LONDON - Scientists want Internet users to help them sort through an unusual digital photo album: pictures of about 1 million galaxies. In a Web statement Wednesday, astronomers asked for volunteers to help classify the galaxies, identifying them as either elliptical or spiral, and noting, where possible, in which direction they rotate.
It would the largest galactic census ever compiled, something scientists say would provide new insight into the structure of the universe.
"We're in the golden era of astronomy," said Bob Nichol, an astronomer at the University of Portsmouth, in southern England, who helped develop the "Galaxy Zoo" Web site where the photographs are posted. "We have more data than we can assimilate, and we need help."
Astronomers say computer programs have been unable to reliably classify the star systems. Without volunteers, it would take researchers years to wade through the photographs, which were taken automatically by a massive digital camera mounted onto a telescope at the Apache Point Observatory near Sunspot, New Mexico, Nichol said. With 10,000 to 20,000 people working to classify the galaxies, the process could take as little as a month.
Volunteers would sign on to the Web site, complete a brief tutorial, and pick through one galaxy after another.
The galaxies would be identified by several people to guard against errors, and scientists would rule on galaxies whose shape or spin was disputed by volunteers.
The catalog would help researchers understand how galaxies interacted and the way in which they formed, Nichol said, explaining that scientists still knew very little about galaxies beyond the fact that some were spiral-shaped while others were elliptical.
"It's a bit of like knowing that there are men and women in the world, but not knowing where they come from or how they're different," he said.
If the volunteers' data showed that galaxies close to each other spun in the same direction, for example, it would suggest that they were formed at the same time from a common source, a potential challengeto the current understanding of how galaxies — and the structure of the universe — came to be.
"At some level, what we learn about these galaxies could tell us something quite fundamental about cosmology and particle physics,"Nichol said.
The project was inspired by similar projects at NASA, such as Stardust(at)home, which enlisted the help of thousands of volunteers to sift through grains of space dust gathered during a 2006 mission. Another such program, SETI(at)home, taps volunteers' computer power to help scientists detect extraterrestrial radio signals.
Galaxy Zoo was developed by researchers from the University of Portsmouth and the University of Oxford in England, and Johns Hopkins University in Maryland.
