VES sailing with 'Pirates'

Awards will be presented Feb. 10

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” led the field among nominees for the 6th Visual Effects Society awards with six mentions, followed by “Transformers” and “I Am Legend” with five each.

All three were nommed for outstanding visual effects in a visual effects driven motion picture, the VES’ top award. They compete for that kudo with “Spider-Man 3” and “The Golden Compass.”

On the TV side, import “Doctor Who,” and “Battlestar Galactica” grabbed two. Pair will compete for top honors for a broadcast series with “Heroes,” “Stargate Atlantis” and “Fight for Life.”

The VES Awards will be presented Feb. 10 at the Kodak Theatre Grand Ballroom in Hollywood. This year’s lifetime achievement honoree is Steven Spielberg.
