SINGAPORE : You know all those monsters hiding in your closet and under your bed when you were a kid? Guess what, they’re not figments of your imagination after all - they’re real.

At least, that’s the premise of "Sanctuary", the new series on the SciFi channel, that pushes the boundaries between the real and the imaginary.

It stars Amanda Tapping ("Stargate SG-1") as Dr Helen Magnus, the custodian of the unusual beings she houses in her cathedral of a home, where they seek sanctuary from harm and curiosity. Magnus herself is unusual in that she is 157 years old, having discovered the secret to eternal youth. Some of the curiosities she helps include mutant creatures, a mermaid and Bigfoot, who has been rehabilitated as Dr Magnus’ manservant.
“Bigfoot is my favourite of all the creatures,” said Tapping over the phone from Vancouver, Canada. “There’s intelligence and a respectful relationship between the two that transcends time.”

"Sanctuary" could have ended up a quirky dramedy, but its dark setting - literally, it’s set at night and it’s always raining - means that the comedy is kept to a minimum.
Catch Sanctuary on Monday, February 2 at 11pm on SCI FI (StarHub Channel 98).
