From TV.com:
A clip from the Big Bang Theory March 2 '09 episode, where Sheldon refers to a Stargate SG-1 episode.
Sheldon and his friends are playing a game of paintball war. They're in a shed, and Sheldon turns to his friends and says...
"What we need now is a tactical retreat. Did you see the episode on Stargate where they found themselves on a planet with a culture based loosely on Earth Athens and Sparta? (Blank stares from teammates.) Not important..."
[Brief Candle?]

I don't believe it was Brief Candle. There was no need for a tactical retreat, the planet Argos was peaceful.
My first thought was that it is The Game, SGA s315, but there was no 'tactical retreat'.
Or maybe even Emancipation (sg1 sx03) or New Ground (3x19), or Memento (6x20) (my first SG-1 thought).
It could also be Icon (8x05) (another very likely one), Condemned (sga 2x05), The Tower (sga 215)
To be honest, I believe the best reference would have been The Fifth Man, 5x04, where Col. O'Neill is on a planet with "Lt. Tyler", a Reole, are hiding in ruins and Jaffa are pressing in on their position.
After thinking about it, I don't believe any episode actually matches Athens/Sparta, rather they just bear similarities, and the writers decided to reference Stargate (hence the analytical Sheldon not specifying which series of Stargate or even the episode title).
The Game is probably the best match as per culture.
Do you know the episode to which Sheldon is referring?
Hi, Pascalian. (Love your screen name!)
I think it was SG1's 'Brief Candle' from season one.
Morjana
Wow. Thanks y'all for the help. I guess I'll have to watch the DVDs for the seasons I own.
Thanks Morjana on the screen name.
