Sanctuary / Stargate - Movehole: Amanda Tapping Interview

At Moviehole (Australia):

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Interview : Amanda Tapping

Amanda Tapping is best known for her role as the beautiful, intelligent Samantha Carter in the Stargate TV franchise. In 2007 Tapping helped to develop the web series "Sanctuary" in which she played the lead character Helen Magnus. "Sanctuary" is unique in many but particularly so because it is shot almost entirely using green screen techniques. "Sanctuary" was reworked and released as a television series in 2008. In addition to playing the lead character, Tapping is an executive producer and director on the series. Ellyssa Harris caught up with Amanda Tapping while she was at a Stargate convention in Vancouver.

... Q. We've seen an number of the regular Stargate cast members in the webisodes and a couple of them in the series, will we see more of those that did the webisodes in the TV series at all?
AT: You know I was just talking to Paul McGillion about that today `cause I'd love to see Wexford come back he was so awesome. We actually tried to get David [Nykl] for an episode as a completely different character to what he played in the websiodes but he's shooting a film in Bulgaria or something right now so we couldn't get him but definitely yeah. I mean, it's such a tight knit community here in Vancouver but the Stargate family is also just this incredibly tight knit family, for sure we'd love to bring people over. I think what we were trying to do with the websiodes was parley the relationships that we had and utilise these really good actors and cool characters. With season one we tried to distance a little bit because we wanted it not to be a subsidiary of Stargate. Sanctuary in its own right is a really good show and stands on its own, we didn't want to be too connected… not in a bad way, because obviously we owe huge amounts to Stargate, but we wanted it to be a separate entity, and now we're established and we're going into a second season so definitely there'll be opportunity...

"Sanctuary" premieres on Australian Sci Fi Thursday, May 28 at 8:30pm.

Six Questions: Eric Doctorow

By Thomas K. Arnold | Posted: 15 May 2009

Eric Doctorow is the longest-serving studio chief in Hollywood's home entertainment sector. He became president of worldwide video for Paramount Pictures in 1994, and has been keeping close tabs on the business ever since, most recently as GM of MGM Worldwide for the past three years.

In the midst of MGM's 85th anniversary, Home Media Magazine sat down with Doctorow to gain his perspective on several big issues, opportunities and challenges that face us today. Fifteen years after he first became a worldwide home entertainment president, Doctorow possesses a vast body of institutional knowledge — and continues to be one of the home entertainment sector's top movers and shakers.

HM: MGM celebrates its 85th birthday this year, a year after Warner Bros. What special events or releases do you have in store to capitalize on this milestone?
Doctorow: For the coming year, we have a number of cool releases planned: A 40th anniversary edition of Hair, an all-new special collector's edition of Spinal Tap on Blu-ray Disc, and a 30th anniversary edition of Mad Max. We have a couple of "Stargate" surprises planned. The entire "Rocky" collection will also street on Blu-ray in time for the holidays. And, finally, we have some neat gift sets being planned for later in the year.

NOTE: Stargate: Universe premieres on the SciFi Channel (US) (or Syfy) in the Fall of 2009 (most probably in October). Read an interview with Ryan Robbins, (Genii Ladon Radim), featured in issue #28 of The Official Stargate SG-1/Atlantis Magazine.

A brief excerpt:

Ryan Robbins
, the actor behind Genii Ladon Radim, is incredibly grateful to Martin Wood. The Stargate: Atlantis director is single-handedly responsible for saving Ladon’s life. Were it not for Wood, the Genii scientist would never have survived to engineer Cowen’s demise, and become leader of his people. It was a close call though.
“When I first got the role, the character wasn’t supposed to survive past two episodes,” Robbins explains. “We were about to shoot the scene where Ladon gets killed and Martin goes, ‘You know what? I like you, I don’t think I’m gonna kill you. Let’s kill that guy!’ — and he pointed to a background artist. Then he said to me, ‘We’ll get you back on the show.’ Martin Wood decided to keep me around!”

Stargate Atlantis - SciFi and TV Talk Blog: James Bamford Interview

At SciFi and TV Talk Blog:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

James Bamford – Action Man!

by Steve Eramo

James Bamford is looking for a fight today on the Stargate Atlantis set. It’s OK, though, seeing that he is the show’s stunt coordinator. When it comes to one of our heroes duking it out with a bad guy, a Wraith jumping from a dizzying height, or even a guest-star taking a fall, Bamford, or “Bam Bam,” is responsible for making sure everyone knows what he or she is doing and, above all, is safe while doing it. His season five on-set “duties” began in earnest with Broken Ties, in which Ronon Dex once again goes up against his former Satedan friend Tyre, played by Mark Dacascos.
“First off, Mark Dacascos is just a master and a true martial artist,” says Bamford. “He’s not an actor who learned how to fight, but rather a fighter who learned how to act, and is a treat to work with. Having him perform my choreography is truly an honor. I began really early choreographing this particular fight in Broken Ties, and it went on for so long that they [the producers and director] actually cut out almost half of it. The episode itself was over time-wise, which is why we had to edit down the sequence. However, what’s cool is when the season five DVD comes out, you’ll see the entire fight as a special feature. Ivon Bartok [DVD special features producer] followed us around with a camera in the early choreography stages and came to all the rehearsals, so you’ll get to watch a really progressive version of the rehearsal process. And think the fight on the DVD will be my original full-length version, which I’m excited about..."

... [J.J.] Abrams was equally emotional when, last month, he persuaded the series-shy star to watch—and then appear in—a few episodes of Fringe, which he’d never seen. “I never in my wildest dreams thought he would do it,” says Abrams. “We didn’t think we were going to get him for ‘Star Trek,’ let alone Fringe. But then we were editing ‘Star Trek’ and the William Bell question came up, and Leonard was sitting next to us and a light went off.”

Nimoy’s eyes sparkle as he recalls Abrams’ pitch: “He said, ‘We’ve got this character who is enormously wealthy, powerful and very intelligent, who was once the partner of one of our other characters [Walter Bishop]. There’s an aura of ambiguity to him. We don’t know exactly what his intentions are, but he may be behind a very negative force...’”

Robin Dunne says Sherwood Forest has monsters but no tights

By Bryan Cairns
05/11/09

Robin Dunne, who will star as the title character in SCI FI Channel's upcoming original movie Robin Hood: Beyond Sherwood, told SCI FI Wire that the film adds a supernatural element to the venerable legend. (Possible spoilers ahead!)
"There's a monster that is being used as a weapon by the sheriff in order to control things," Dunne said in an exclusive interview last week. "Robin is left to try and stop this monster. It's not a classic creature in the sense it's pure
evil; it's actually a girl that has been transformed, so Robin has to preserve this life that has been morphed. It was an interesting film to do. Robin Hood is a character I've always wanted to play, and such an iconic archetype."

Star Trek - SheKnows: D.C. Fontana Interview

Many thanks to SF Universe for the heads up!

At SheKnows:

(Please follow the link for the complete two-page interview.)

Fontana is a Trek pioneer

A Star Trek story of female inspiration

by Lynn Barker

"To boldly go where no man has gone before." That was the end of the opening narration for the iconic Sci Fi TV series Star Trek. The modern narration now touts "where no one has gone before." With the new Star Trek film garnering such buzz, SheKnows thought we would take you back to the beginning.

Star Trek the TV show ran on NBC from 1966 to 1969. Back in the era of go-go boots, the Vietnam War and bra-burnings, with the exception of one Russian cosmonaut, women weren't ‘going’ into space. In fact, women rarely even went into the boardroom unless it was as a secretary to take notes.

A very notable exception to that rule is my mentor and friend Dorothy Catherine (DC) Fontana.

... Fontana is currently teaching screenwriting to the Fellows at the prestigious American Film Institute in LA while actively continuing her writing career in various media including online series, video games and comics. She recently was inducted into the American Screenwriters Association Hall of Fame and, in 2006 was honored by the She Made It program for outstanding women in radio and TV at the Museum of Television and Radio.

With the new Trek film coming out this week, SheKnows.com felt it was especially appropriate to chat with this inspiring, amazing woman about her long career and gather some entertaining classic Star Trek insider info on cast, costumes, make-up, pranks and fave episodes etc. Let's go back to yesteryear. We've got on our mini-skirt and tie-dyed tee so beam us back to the '60's, Scotty...and don’t miss our interviews with the entire Star Trek movie cast and its creator JJ Abrams all this week!

A brief excerpt:

SheKnows: Of the characters that you created for classic Trek, which one is closest to your heart and which one was the hardest to get on paper and get right?
Fontana: Well, I loved Amanda and Sarek, Spock's parents really and the character that Jill Ireland played in This Side of Paradise. Journey To Babel is my absolute favorite show that I wrote because everything went so well on that one. It really was fun. It was mostly a bottle show and so we could spend money on good actors and get the party scene right, all of those things.

SheKnows: And then getting Jane Wyatt to play Amanda was so great.
Fontana: Oh, she was so lovely, so wonderful. Mark Lenard (who played Spock's father Sarek) was very imposing -- a good actor that died too soon. But they had a little chemistry going on between them, too, because you could feel that they liked each other as people and that came across in the characters, I think...

SCIFI Channel: Playing to the Tech-Savviest Fans

The network was putting TV on the Web a decade ago, and innovation remains the watchword

By Chris Albrecht

May 11, 2009

Nerds across the galaxy strapped on their pointy ears and beamed into theaters to catch the big budget reboot of Star Trek this weekend. Science-fiction fans may be the butts of Klingon jokes, but they are also early adopters and provide fertile ground for new media experimentation. Case in point: the SCIFI Channel.

I spoke with Craig E. Engler, senior vice-president and general manager of SCIFI's digital arm, to find out what it does to tap into the power of this rabid fan base. "We have a very techno-savvy audience," said Engler. "It's a younger, more modern audience. They jump into this stuff."

... SCIFI also does original productions for the Web such as DVICE, a show about tech and gadgets. While the network has a number of original scripted shows in the works for the Web, none have moved beyond the development stage. But that doesn't dim Engler's enthusiasm for the medium. "We're fully integrated with our West Coast development team," said Engler. "Any online show is a default pilot for on-air."

Besides creating content for the Web, SCIFI has found content there. Both Tripping the Rift and more recently Sanctuary originated online and were brought to TV. Sanctuary enjoyed a strong debut on the network and was picked up for a second season.

One of the more innovative programs SCIFI ran was providing tools and footage from Battlestar for users to create their own fan films. Viewers could incorporate official shots of the Galactica, Cylons, and other special effects into their own works. Engler said the site received hundreds of submissions, and considered the program a success, but didn't duplicate it. "We don't like to repeat ourselves. We like to find the right tool for the right show," he said.

SCIFI is expanding its digital tool set this year. Engler said his division is already in talks with the producers of upcoming shows Stargate Universe and Warehouse 13 about integrating and extending their storylines with Web video. "We're always looking for broadband video expansion," he said.

Sci-fi projects roar at Leo Awards

By Glen Schaefer, The Province

May 10, 2009

B.C.'s sci-fi productions were big winners at this weekend's annual Leo Awards for B.C.-made film and television.

Named best TV series was Stargate: Atlantis, which won a total of nine awards for its fifth and final season.

In addition to the prizes handed out Friday and Saturday night at the Bayshore Hotel, Stargate producers Brad Wright and Robert Cooper were earlier named winners of the lifetime achievement award, as was veteran stuntman Jacob Rupp.

As well, the made-for-TV movie Stargate: Continuum, based on the original Stargate: SG-1 TV series, won three prizes in the feature film category.

Also among sci-fi winners was the new TV series Sanctuary, a gothic-themed show starring former Stargate: SG-1 lead Amanda Tapping as an immortal from Victorian England doing battle with modern-day monsters. The show won acting awards for Tapping as well as guest stars Ryan Robbins and Gabrielle Rose. Sanctuary also won the prize for best makeup.

... Lead acting awards went to Michael Shanks of Stargate: Continuum and Babz Chula of the low-budget relationship comedy Mothers&Daughters (currently in theatres -- a refreshing thing to be able to say about any B.C.-made feature)....

Leo roars for Stargate empire

By Peter Birnie
VANCOUVER SUN
May 10, 2009

... On the television side, Stargate Atlantis swept the top honours. In addition to capturing Best Program, the popular series also took Leos for best direction (Robert Cooper for the episode titled Vegas), best screenwriting (Alan McCullough for The Queen) and cinematography (Michael Blundell for Vegas).
“We did pretty good, we’re pretty happy with our showing,” said producer Brad Wright. “Our cast and our crew for Atlantis is among the best I’ve ever had an opportunity to work with. We were too flummoxed to say that on stage last night. We were shocked. We’re used to going to award shows and hearing other shows names being called. I guess last night was our night.”

Not only did Stargate Atlantis also win a slew of the technical awards, presented on Friday evening, but producers Brad Wright and Robert Cooper were honoured with an outstanding achievement award for the entire Stargate franchise.

Vancouver’s film and TV community has enjoyed tremendous benefits from this sci-fi monolith, which started (after the initial movie) with Stargate SG-1, includes two direct-to-DVD movies (Stargate SG-1: The Arc of Truth and Stargate Continuum) and carries on after Stargate Atlantis with the latest offshoot, a TV series titled Stargate Universe, which debuts in the autumn.

The icing on the cake for the Stargate team came in the feature-length category, as Stargate Continuum also captured Leos for Michael Shanks (lead actor) and Brad Wright (screenwriting).

... The Leo Awards were first presented in 1999.

Corner Gas, Stargate, Babz Chula win at B.C.'s Leo Awards

By Craig Takeuchi

B.C.’s celebrities and talent turned out in droves to converge at the Westin Bayshore this weekend for the Leo Awards, a two-day award ceremony for B.C.’s film and television industry.

While technical awards were given out on Friday (May 8) at the Celebration Awards, acting and directing awards were bestowed on Saturday (May 9) at the Gala Awards.

... Gabrielle Rose (Mothers&Daughters) won best guest performance by a female for her appearance on Sanctuary...

Rose’s Mothers&Daughters costar Babz Chula won the best lead performance by a female, and later presented the best director award for feature length drama. The competitors for this award—which included David Wu (Iron Road), Gary Harvey (Playing For Keeps), Martin Wood (Stargate Continuum), and Charles Martin Smith (Stone of Destiny)—drew some of the loudest cheers of the night.

Ultimately, it went to Anne Wheeler for Living Out Loud, about a woman diagnosed with breast cancer (Chula also starred in the film). [Michael Shanks also co-starred in this movie with Gail O'Grady.]

Being Erica star Erin Karpluk presented the best lead in a dramatic series awards. Best male went to Tyler Labine for Reaper (VIFF–goers may have seen his performance in the computer sex comedy Control Alt Delete, which may have a theatrical run later this year) while best female went to Amanda Tapping for Sanctuary.

Michael Shanks
won best lead performance by a male in a feature length drama for Stargate Continuum (which had 11 nominations) and Stargate Altantis (16 nominations) won best dramatic series (beating Reaper and Smallville). The Stargate creators Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright received outstanding achievement awards for their work on the Stargate franchise...

Every Wednesday it's the newest episode of the GateWorld Podcast. And on Fridays — starting today — it's a countdown of some of our favorite episodes, tech, moments and characters from the shows!

~~**~~**

Subduction Leads to Orogeny's Favorite Five Weapons:

1) Intar

First introduced in Stargate SG1's 'Rules of Engagement,' the Intar are a Goa'uld weapon used for training, as they are only capable of varying levels of stunning the opponent.

2) TER - Transphase Eradication Rod

First introduced in Stargate SG-1's 'Show and Tell,' this weapon was used to primarily make invisible alien creatures from another dimension visible in ours. Later, it was modified to compensate for phase-shifting and cloaking technology.

3) UAV - Unmanned Airborne Vehicle

The UAV was first introduced in Stargate SG-1's 'Enigma' as an airborne MALP. Later, it was modified to carry missiles as well.

2) Time Dilation Device

First introduced in Stargate SG-1's 'Unnatural Selection,' this weapon was designed to create a bubble in space within which time could be either be slowed or accelerated.

1) Sarcophagus

First introduced in the Stargate feature film, and first seen in Stargate SG-1's 'Hathor,' the sarcophagus is capable of curing diseases, healing injuries, reviving the dead, and extending life by thousands of years.

With thanks to the Richard Dean Anderson's website's Stargate SG-1 Lexicon for the photos.
