HOLLYWOOD INSIDER: Warehouse 13 Creator Jack Kenny Delves Into Season 2!
May 29th, 2010 · Posted by: Sheldon A. Wiebe
Warehouse 13 came out of nowhere last summer to become Syfy’s most successful series ever. Built around the concept of a warehouse for storing artifacts with unusual, even supernatural, abilities – and the Secret Service agents who are assigned to bag, tag and store those items, the show’s mix of buddy show, weird procedural and eccentric character studies was an instant hit.
This week, Warehouse 13’s creator/showrunner Jack Kenny took some time from shooting season two to talk about the show’s conception and what lies in store for the upcoming season. Warehouse 13 returns to Syfy on July 6 [9/8C].
A brief excerpt:
Well as a follow-up to that, do you feel any pressure or the need to go darker like other Syfy franchises? Like Battlestar Galactica or Stargate Universe?

A brief excerpt:
Well as a follow-up to that, do you feel any pressure or the need to go darker like other Syfy franchises? Like Battlestar Galactica or Stargate Universe?
Kenny: "Well, they’re – I think they’re darker in a different way. I mean, you know, we definitely want to examine dark issues. We don’t make it a light frothy comedy. We – last year in an episode, we examined Pete and Myka’s guilty past and what they’re guilty about. Pete about his Dad and Myka about the man who died on the mission she was on.
And so, we don’t – I – well I would – certainly don’t want to avoid dark issues or emotional issues, on the contrary, we’d like to dive head into those. But, I also feel like we can mix it with the comedy of the moment. Not jokes per se, but situational comedy, character-based comedy, but I don’t think – because Battlestar and – is a – it was a darker world, it lends itself to a darker feeling. Ours is – I mean, the advantage our show is we go everywhere.
We’re doing some episodes this season that have very dark overtones, and some that have very light overtones. We’re doing a body switching episode that, you know, you can’t avoid having a light overtone to it, even though there is a danger element involved. And then we’re also doing a very heavily – you know, heavily emotional episode near the end of the season.
So, we kind of cross all the vectors..."

AH: "I like all of the relationships that she has and I definitely feel like all of them can connect more. She definitely has a history with Young, especially now with the baby...I love the fun, sweet girlfriend moments between James, Park, Chloe, and Camile. Then TJ has her connection with her air force buddy, Scott. Then Rush is just Rush...I don't think he knows how to have a relationship with anyone. (laughs)..."

A brief excerpt:
The TV Junkie: Who from the cast have you learned the most from?
Alaina Huffman: "Oh, that's a great question. I draw so much from them all individually. There is such a sense of respect among all the actors and we genuinely all enjoy each other's company and we actually hang out quite a bit, to the extent that last season one of the producers told us to take a break from each other, "you don't have to hang out with each other every weekend" - and we're like "really, because we really like to!" So we spent quite a bit of time with each other when we were back in LA.
That being said, Robert Carlyle is such a great actor, and such a character actor - you learn so much from him. He actually directed the first episode of season two, so I was really excited to work with him because I thought if I worked with him as a director I could understand how he works as an actor. Also, Louis Ferreira, he could not be further from his character, he is so funny and easy going and loving and genuine, he's really not that stuffy Colonel Young that he plays - he does all these character voices, he's very entertaining. Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque, are such stand-up people, they're so much fun to work with. They're all such a great group, I really draw from everyone..."

Andy Mikita Interview - Stargate Magazine #34
Stargate Magazine, May 28th, 2010
An interview with Andy Mikita featured in issue #34 of The Official Stargate SG-1/Atlantis/SGU Magazine.
Director Andy Mikita - photo courtesy of Joseph Mallozzi's blog
Andy Mikita started his Stargate voyage as a first assistant director on Stargate SG-1’s pilot Children of the Gods, over a decade ago. He’s come a long way since then, working his way up through second unit director and production manager before he made his directorial debut with Stargate SG-1’s season three adventure Foothold. Mikita then went on to direct and produce dozens of Stargate SG-1 episodes as well as instalments of Stargate Atlantis, and he is now heavily involved with the show’s current incarnation as a director and co-producer on Stargate Universe.
With all his experience and involvement on Stargate, it came as no surprise that he was given the honor of directing Universe’s three-hour opener Air. However, unlike his previous adventures through the Stargate, this one started out a little differently.

A brief excerpt (of the larger excerpt):
“Although our official prep date for Universe was still way off, as soon as I knew I’d be directing Air, I wanted to be involved as early as possible, which was terrific,” says the director. “That allowed me the opportunity to be here when they were designing and building the set. Normally, a director isn’t around for that sort of thing, so I had the luxury of being able to throw out the odd suggestion or idea to James Robbins (production designer) and Scott Wellenbrink (construction coordinator).
“I also got to fly down to Los Angeles in December (2008) for all the cast callbacks. I had never been a part of that process before. I got to sit in the room where all the final decisions were being made. Typically, that’s the domain of the executive producers. I’m sure for a pilot director that’s normal, but having never directed a pilot, that was new to me...”

BJS: "Yes, for sure, if I'm going to wake up at 5am in the morning and go to set and really, really be invested there's got to be something that interests me as an actor. And I don't know if I would be interested in a kind of a light-comedy type show. Even if it paid really well, I don't know if that would keep me going, I would get bored. This show, it's very, very challenging, the stakes are always very high, and that to me is very attractive and there's something about the character that is really interesting to me and really, really moves me and has from day one. And I'm certainly impressed to see where they're going with the character and certainly curious to see what's going to happen later on this year."

Stargate Universe - GateWorld: Elyse Levesque Audio Interview
At GateWorld:
DAUGHTER OF DESTINY
by Chad Colvin
It’s a crazy time for some of the stars of Stargate Universe. Many of them are just beginning to meet fans of the new series face to face and realize the immensity and dedication there is to the entire Stargate franchise. One for whom this is especially true is the actress playing SGU’s Chloe Armstrong, Elyse Levesque.
GateWorld caught up with Elyse at Creation Entertainment’s annual Vancouver Stargate convention last month, and we were blown away by both her enthusiasm and her energy for the series. In our discussion Elyse talks about her introduction to the industry, how she and Chloe are both similar and different, the Eli-Matt-Chloe triangle, and much much more.
GateWorld’s interview with Elyse Levesque runs over 12 minutes, and is available in audio. It’s also transcribed [at the link above]!

GateWorld: Are there any parts of your personality that you bring to her?
EL: Gosh! I think … I think there’s just some stuff that I relate to. The upbringing. An only child. Very close to her parents and her family. I’m super, super close to my parents. I’m a total daddy’s girl. She’s got a much more difficult relationship with her mother than I do with mine. I’m very close to my mom. And I guess, in a way, a sheltered upbringing. I can relate to that. A small city. A lot of love. A lot of protection.
In ways I differ — I think I’m a lot goofier then she is. A lot weirder, probably. You could say that about me. I think she takes herself a little more seriously than I do. But I used to! I used to take myself a lot more seriously. And then I said, “You know what? I’m weird! Go with it!” So I guess the essence of me is similar to her, but maybe it’s a dialed-down me.

Alaina Huffman on the 'Stargate Universe' Season Finale, Season Two, and More
by Mike Moody, posted May 21st 2010
Life is tough aboard Destiny, the wandering spaceship that's home to the crew of Syfy's 'Stargate Universe.' The food is bad, the morale is low, and there's always a chance that a gang of creepy blue aliens will attack the ship or kidnap you from your quarters.
Life is even tougher for Tamara Johansen, aka T.J., played by Alaina Huffman. She's the ship's only medic, she had an affair with her commanding officer, and she's also pregnant. That last storyline came about due to Huffman's real-life pregnancy (she had a baby girl last December), which the 'SGU' team decided to work into the show.
I spoke with Huffman recently about T.J.'s pregnancy, the fan reaction to the show, and about what we could expect from the first season finale and the upcoming second season of 'SGU.' Click through for the goods, and to find out if she plans to slip back into that tight leather costume again to play Black Canary on 'Smallville.'
A brief excerpt:
Are you satisfied with how the season ends and what do you think fans will think about the finale?

AH: "I think they'll be pleased. There's some 'Stargate' mythology, and I think the fans will like that. There's stuff that blows up and there's guns that fire, so I think that will please the fans. And then more than that, I think because we did the work to develop the characters and the relationships, all of those things pay off when things blow up. And when we travel through the gate, it's not just about traveling through the gate. It's about "why are these people traveling through the gate to do this?" And that's the depth you get because we've developed the characters..."

Instead of being stuck with a group of refugees on a ship that is moving farther away from Earth after every planetary pit stop, the stones let the gang interact with franchise vets Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks back in the known universe, which is good news since it seems like Col. Colin Hanks admits frustration over looking like his dad
Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks
Just because you’re the son of an international superstar who has more accolades under his belt than you have years doesn’t mean life is going to be easy, especially if you’re going to follow in his footsteps.
It’s hard not to notice how much Colin Hanks resembles, talks like and even acts like his father, Tom, and it’s something that’s been a source of frustration for the younger Hanks since the 32-year-old broke into an acting career.
But now with new Fox cop dramedy The Good Guys on the horizon and a wedding ring on his finger, Hanks might have found a role to break free from his father’s shadow. (Check out our feature story on the show and co-star Bradley Whitford's awesome moustache here.)
TVGuide.ca caught up with the actor at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif., this past January to chat about his genes, his stint on Mad Men, and of course, being a “Good Guy.”
A brief excerpt:
TVG: In all seriousness, I know I cracked a joke earlier about how much you look like your dad, but is there a frustration for you in having a famous father and trying to break out on your own?

CH: Well, I could get frustrated all I want, but it sure as hell isn’t going to change anything. It sort of is what it is and there was a period there where it became extremely frustrating because it was never a big issue for me, and so to constantly have it come up, I sort of felt like, ‘Yes, that’s fascinating. I’ve been doing this for a while now,’ as I got older and it kept coming up. I know it’s interesting for people and there’s really nothing I can do about it. There’s nothing I really need to do about it.

Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy Talks About Fringe
In part two of Fringe‘s second season finale, Over There, Part 2 (airing Thursday, May 20th @ 9:00 p.m. EST/PST on Fox), sacrifices will be made and both universes may never be the same again after Walter (John Noble) and Olivia (Anna Torv) visit the “other side.” Leonard Nimoy reprises his recurring role as Dr. William Bell in this episode. The actor, who has announced his retirement from both acting and directing, recently spoke with myself along with other journalists about his work on the episode as well as other topics. The following is an edited version of that Q & A. Enjoy!
A brief excerpt:
I’m wondering what it is that brought you to appear on Fringe. Are you watching this show? Did somebody approach you about being on there? Was there a specific role set up for you?

I’m wondering what it is that brought you to appear on Fringe. Are you watching this show? Did somebody approach you about being on there? Was there a specific role set up for you?
LEONARD NIMOY - I had a wonderful time working on the new Star Trek movie with J.J. Abrams, who directed it. When it was done, he asked me to look into the possibility of playing William Bell on Fringe. I was frankly not terribly aware of what it was all about. I began looking at some episodes that William Bell, the character, had been talked about rather frequently, but had never been seen. I felt that I owed J.J. a favor. He did a great job on the Star Trek movie and treated me extremely well. I’m very happy I did it. The work on Fringe has turned out to be exciting and interesting. It’s a terribly well produced series. The character was a wide open canvas for me to work with. I had a great time doing it. This week’s episode is particularly special for the William Bell character...

Stargate Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog: Alaina Huffman Answers Your Questions!
From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for May 16, 2010:
(Please follow the link for the complete MASSIVE blog update.)
Actress Alaina Huffman Answers Your Questions!
As I always do, I forwarded the fan/reader questions with the understanding that work and other commitments would probably prevent a quick turnaround. “Here are the questions,”went my standard accompanying message. ”Feel free to pick and choose among them, then send them back my way whenever you’re done. No rush and no deadline.” The next day, I received the following missive from actress Alaina Huffman: “I have a bunch answered, gonna take a break but didn’t want to lose any so am passing on what I have answered and will get the rest tomorrow night!” She’d already answered half the questions! I marveled over the quick turnaround. Her response: “Moms. We multi-task ;) “. Oh, yeah. I forgot. This was the woman who twitters through the birth of her last child.
Anyway, what can I say about Alaina? Well, the word “awesome” comes to mind. Awesome in her onscreen ability to convey immense strength and depth of character in something as simple as a single line or look. Awesome in her relaxed and upbeat off-screen attitude that instantly puts everyone around her at ease. Just all-around awesome.
Over to Alaina and her smilerific (this has gotta be a record!) Q&A ...
A brief excerpt:
E writes: “First of all, you have been absolutely brilliant with TJ’s pregnancy storyline. I really feel for the character. What aspect of your character do you like the most?”
“How similar are you and TJ?”
“What’s your favourite episode in S1 and why?”

AH: Thanks :) I love the fullness of the Character. I love that she is allowed to be unsure yet still possesses strength. I have learned a lot from her in my personal life, how to be strong and can take charge yet ask for help and be ok with the fact that you don’t have all the answers!
“How similar are you and TJ?”
AH: Like I said I have learned a lot from her but I don’t think we are very similar.
“What’s your favourite episode in S1 and why?”
AH: I loved the episode “Time” cause it was amazing ;)
