The relationship between Science and Science Fiction is a symbiotic one, don't you think? Casey and I visited a Science Fiction convention in Toronto called Polaris 21 where we explored that relationship. What we found was that Science Fiction fans are keenly aware of the interplay between the two and had plenty to say. We have their insights in this episode of "News In Space" including an interview with Torri Higginson of Stargate Atlantis.

Of Klingons and Quasars

News In Space host Casey Dee goes to a SciFi convention to explore the unique relationship between Science and Science Fiction. Includes exclusive interviews with actors Ron Glass of Firefly, Steve Bacic of Andromeda and Torri Higginson of Stargate Atlantis.

Comicon Crazy!

Written by dgeek

Saturday, 28 July 2007

How great is it to be surrounded by over 100,000 of your own? These are my peeps! These are the Comicon geeks!

We've just done a massive Stargate Atlantis panel for about 4000 fans here in sunny, sweaty San Diego and signed a few hundred posters for those that could stand the heat of the endless line-ups. I couldn't hear a damn thing on the panel. So, instinct kicked in and I took the defensively smiling meerkat stance of polite attention with a slight edge of alertness for danger. No problem hearing the questions from the floor, just impossible to make out the words of anyone on the
stage with me...perhaps it's better that way ;-)

**snippage**

A Dog's Breakfast is being beautifully flaunted on the "other" side of all the Stargatge Atlantis posters, with trailers blaring from the MGM booth (so I'm told...they won't let me out there!).

Stargate SG-1/Atlantis: Joseph Mallozzi's Blog Updated Jul 27

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for July 27th:

http://josephmallozzi.blogspot.com/2007/07/july-27-2007.html

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update. Some lovely pictures at the site from Comic Con of Ben Browder, Christopher Judge, Martin Wood, Gary Jones, Robert C. Cooper, and Amanda Tapping.)

**snippage**

Alas, I don’t have time to go into detail (that will have to wait until tomorrow’s blog) but both panels went well. Not all that much in the way of hard-hitting questions with the exception of one that went Rob Cooper's way: “Why do you hate doctors?” His response “I don’t hate doctors, just Scottish people” was met with a healthy chorus of boos. When it came time for the Atlantis panel, I made it a point to inform the gathering: “I’d just like to go on record and say I love Scottish people.” Cheers. “To all you Scots, please direct all hate mail to Robert Cooper. My inbox is full.

**snippage**

I walked around the convention floor for a while, met comic book writer Joe Kelly and said hi (loved his run on Deadpool), snapped some pics, then joined Martin Wood and Ben Browder to make an impromptu appearance at the Stargate Offworld Fandom get-together, a small fan gathering.

...In the meantime, I never had to check my List of Things Not to Talk About at Comic Con, so those particular spoilers remain safe and sound. But for the hell of it, I reprint my list here. Don’t tell anyone:

1. Sheppard battles evil Sheppard and gets his ass kicked all over the gate room – DO NOT DISCUSS

2. The big live-action Space Invaders sequence – DO NO REVEAL

3. The hidden replicator sub-routine, taking it to “the next step”, Teal’c and Ronon face off – DO NOT MAKE PUBLIC

4. The Return of Carson Beckett – SUPER TOP SECRET

Thursday Comic-Con report: Crowds, capes and crusted salmon

By April MacIntyre Jul 27, 2007, 15:43 GMT

Comic-Con is an unusual event, in that you really need to seek out what it is you are interested in, and manoeuvre tens of thousands of people while doing it.

Not my favorite pastime, navigating crowds. But the excitement and rare gems unearthed make it a fun time, none the less.

The best part of Thursday was the finale of a lovely dinner overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla at George's restaurant with Stargate Atlantis's executive producer and showrunner, Joe Mallozzi. He snapped a photo essay of all our beautiful plates that hit the table. The photos will be up on his blog later.

Comic-Con: 'Stargate Atlantis' Booth

`BATTLESTAR GALACTICA': INSIDE THE HATCH

Actor and novelist Richard Hatch gives fans the `BSG' A-Z (Apollo-Zarek)

By David Winnick

Posted July 27, 2007 4:30 PM

Fans of "Battlestar Galactica" were in for a treat yesterday at the San Diego Convention Center when Richard Hatch made an appearance to moderate a panel about the series. Hatch, who played Captain Apollo, in the original series now portrays the manipulative politician Tom Zarek on the new show. Television, however is not the only contribution that Hatch has made to the "Battlestar Galactica" mythos; he has also written a series of novels that further expand the tales of the Galactica and its crew.

Hatch was joined on the panel by composer Bear McCreary, scientific advisor Dr. Kevin Grazer and writers Brad Liaweaver and Mark Verheiden.

**snippage**

When the clip had finished, the floor was opened for questions while the next video was being cued up. During the Q&A Grazer made a point of apologizing for a comment that he made at last year's panel, stating that the worst of all science he has ever seen on a show was in "Stargate." What he really intended to say was that it was
actually in "Armageddon." This brought up questions about which was scientifically more inaccurate, "Armageddon" or "The Day After Tomorrow"? Grazer responded to this by saying that he refused to see "The Day After Tomorrow" after seeing a clip in which someone said that the outside temperature was dropping by ten degrees per
second. Grazer then pointed out that the temperature would hit absolute zero in under a minute.

Grazer went on to talk about the science in "Battlestar Galactica" claiming, that the only portions of the show that are technologically inaccurate are light speed and anti-gravity. He said that they actually received a lot of complaints about the death of some characters who were sucked out of an air lock. The viewers, due to
movies like "Total Recall", complained that the characters did not explode like they should have. Grazer set everyone straight though, informing the panel that in actuality a person would die but not explode, the one major place where the damage could be seen is in the eyes as the blood vessels burst.

LIVE AT THE SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON: SCI FI'S 'STARGATE SG-1'

By Brian Ford Sullivan

12:15 p.m. - So good news and bad news. The good news - the studio just held a private Q&A for the press so I'll have some exclusive "Stargate" cast member/producer quotes later tonight. The bad news - I have to bounce in the middle of the actual "Stargate" panel so I can do the same thing for "Chuck" at 1:30. Anywho, nothing earth shattering was said - but Jewel Staite made the mistake of
saying she bonded with the "Firefly" cast quicker ("They're like family," she noted), a fact that everyone else would not let go of for the entire half-hour. And Ben Browder addressed the whole Paul McGillion thing in only the way Ben Browder can.

July 27th Comic-Con Report

Written on July 27, 2007 by Vic Holtreman

I didn't make it to the Warner Bros. panel, but did get to sit in on the presentation for the upcoming direct to DVD Stargate SG-1 movies. On hand was the cast including Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Ben Browder along with director Martin Wood and producer Robert Cooper.

**snippage**

Gary Jones who played gate operator "Walter" acted as moderator. He was quite engaging and introduced a trailer for Stargate: The Ark of Truth, the DVD movie that will complete the Ori storyline. It looked pretty epic and like they pulled out all the stops.

**snippage**

Christopher Judge stated that he will be appearing in the upcoming film Rage of Angels.

The Stargate: Atlantis panel included David Hewlett, Joe Flanigan and Jewel Staite (from Serenity).
