Watched a director's cut of The Queen and a Day 1 mix of The Seed, dropped by stage 2 where Will was shooting the inserts and missing shots for Whispers, had Bob Picardo drop by the office to say hi and bye enroute to his convention in Italy, chatted with a familiar face from the SG-1 past at the lunch line, beat out the tease and first two acts of the tentatively titled Remnants, exchanged emails with Lou Anders who is in Hong Kong, SF Signal's John DeNardo who was kind enough to put the word out regarding the upcoming Book of the Month Club guest authors, and authors Jeffrey Ford and F. Paul Wilson who wrote very nice things about the time they spent with us.

Atlantis' Picardo Is Reluctant Chief

Robert Picardo, who joins the regular cast of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis in the coming fifth season, told SCI FI Wire that he initially had doubts about playing the new base commander.

"When I got the phone call, there was a little voice going, 'Wait a minute,'" Picardo said in an interview on the show's set in Vancouver, Canada, last week. "You've set this guy up as kind of an annoyance, a bit of a prig. And now suddenly he's the guy in charge?"

**snippage**

A lot of Woolsey's screen time in the new season is devoted to learning that things are different when you're in the big chair. "From the very first episode I'm featured in, Woolsey learns that he cannot simply go by the rulebook," Picardo said. At the end of the first episode, Picardo said, Woolsey tells Sheppard (Joe Flanigan): "I've basically violated five different protocols already in my first crisis."

Close Up: Robert Picardo

May 20, 2008 (Actors)

One of the biggest shake-ups for Stargate Atlantis’ season five is the introduction of Richard Woolsey as the base’s new civilian commander. Actor Robert Picardo talks about the character – and just how he’s going to fit in...

A brief excerpt:

Robert Picardo is no stranger to science fiction television, having spent seven years playing the holographic Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager. He first made an impact on the Stargate universe back in Stargate SG-1’s seventh season, when Woolsey arrived at Stargate Command in the wake of Janet Fraiser’s death. It’s fair to say that the character didn’t endear himself to the SG-1 team – but Picardo obviously made himself popular with the show’s producers, because it wasn’t long before the one-off character was back for more. And from that point on, Richard Woolsey was on the road to character recovery.

“I’ve enjoyed not only playing the character but the experience of working with both casts,” says the actor, taking a break during the filming of episode five of the new season. “The writer-producers have treated me very nicely and I think rather amazingly they’ve rehabilitated a character that was originally introduced, not so much as a villain, but as an unpleasant bureaucrat. I think the producers kind of liked me,” Picardo laughs, “and they thought, ‘Well this guy’s not so bad, why don’t we try to bring him back?’

Jason Momoa: Dex appeal

Hawaiian actor Jason Momoa appeared in lifeguard drama Baywatch before landing the role of Satedan warrior Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis. With the fourth season about to be released on DVD, Momoa spoke to Bryan Cairns about fighting and leaving his shirt on.

**snippage**

As the big muscle on the show, do you have to work hard to keep that physique?

JM: "No, it is too hard. Before the season starts, what I try to do is climb, get in shape, and ride a bike. Once we start rolling, everything dissipates so by the end of the year, I am all ugggh. Until they come in and say, “Ummm, you are supposed to be the bulk of the show!” - then I would go to the gym…It is a good thing I don’t have to take my shirt off. I am so excited to wear clothes. I hate taking my shirt off [laughs]"

Stargate Atlantis: Series 4 Vol. 1 is released on region 2 DVD on 2 June 2008, and Region 1 DVD box set on July 8 2008.

Breaking The Ice

GateWorld talks with Brad Wright

In addition to his work as a writer and executive producer on Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and the new DVD movies, it is fair to say that Vancouver native Brad Wright is the shepherd of the Stargate franchise. He co-created SG-1 in 1997, Atlantis in 2004, and this year is hard at work on a possible third television series, Stargate Universe.

GateWorld's editors sat down with Wright during our visit to Vancouver last month, where we were treated to the first trailer for Stargate: Continuum. Part One of our hour-long interview focuses on that movie, which will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray on July 29, 2008. Wright wrote and produced the film, which is intended to be a stand-alone "romp" for the team.

In this first half of the interview, Wright tells us about the Arctic genesis of the story, the return of Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'Neill, and responds to fans' comparisons of the story with the SG-1 Season Eight finale, "Moebius." He also answers the question regarding whether future Stargate movies will necessarily include the entire cast.

Part One of our audio interview with Brad lasts 21 minutes. You may listen at your leisure, download to your MP3 player, or read the transcript [at the link above]!

Part Two of our interview will arrive later this week!

Stargate SG-1 - SciFi's Stargate Tuesday - 'It's Good To Be King

Guest stars include Wayne Brady (Trelak), Tom McBeath (Maybourne), Nancy Sorel (Garen).

Atlantis Focuses On Wraith

SPOILERS at the link above!

The upcoming fifth season of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis will focus heavily on the Wraith--with a side trip to Las Vegas to commemorate the show's 100th episode, producers told SCI FI Wire during a visit to the show's sets in Vancouver, Canada, on May 16.

Other key developments: Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) will have her baby in the fifth season. The character became pregnant last season to accomodate Luttrell's real-life pregnancy. Luttrell has given birth, so her character can follow suit. The baby is delivered on camera by....

**snippage**

Not everything is about the Wraith though. [Joe] Flanigan said it's his understanding that filming for the show's upcoming 100th episode will take place in Las Vegas. Though Flanigan claimed to have no more details than that, he surmised that this would probably mean the episode will have to do with the replicators.

Six episodes of Stargate Atlantis' new season are complete and filming of new episodes continues. The fifth season kicks off in July.
