Morena Baccarin interview: V, Firefly, Serenity and Shakespeare

by Simon Brew

Published on May 12, 2010

Morena Baccarin chats to us about her starring role in V, as well as squeezing in time for a bit of Firefly, Stargate and Shakespeare...

Morena Baccarin earned her geek stripes many years ago simply by jumping aboard the good ship Firefly. More recently though, she's been fronting up the new version of V as Anna, and it's her face that's been beaming down from the publicity posters. Here, she spared us some time to talk about the show, and what else she's up to...

A brief excerpt:

Can you tell us a little bit about what your reaction was to reading how they'd managed to update V when you took a look at the script?
First you feel that I hope it's going to be good. It's a remake of the show from the 80s that was very much about Nazi Germany, Nazi Youth programmes, the cold war stuff going on. When I read the script I thought I really hope they've updated it.

What they did is they contemporised the character so that Chad Decker, played by Scott Wolf, is an ambitious reporter, which is something we can all identify with.

There's multi-ethnic and cultural relationships in it, which is really great. And a priest, the idea of faith, and what we're playing with is wonderfully contemporised too.

And terrorism, which is something that we today are dealing with more than we were in the 80s.There's a really scary thing that you can't trust your neighbours and you don't really know who is with you and who is against you. I like that idea, that we are not safe in our own borders.

Dollhouse - National Public Radio: Joss Whedon Audio Interview

At National Public Radio:

Joss Whedon: Slayers, Dolls And Singing Villains

by David Bianculli

Fresh Air from WHYY, February 12, 2009 · Joss Whedon's new television show, Dollhouse, follows a group of young women and men who have volunteered to have their personalities and memories erased. Each week, the "dolls" are hired out to fulfill covert missions for rich clients.

Whedon is no stranger to fantasy-based television; he made his reputation with Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel, and also created the futuristic fantasy show Firefly, which spawned the film Serenity. Whedon wrote, directed and produced Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, an online music-comedy about an aspiring super-villain.

Chuck - Adam Baldwin - A.V. Club: Random Roles - Adam Baldwin

At A.V. Club:

Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb from Firefly

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Adam Baldwin

by Steve Heisler February 2, 2009

Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we ask actors for memories about roles that defined their careers. The catch: They don't know beforehand what roles we'll ask them to talk about.

The actor: Adam Baldwin, currently the stoic, wisecrackin' government agent on NBC's Chuck, which returns from its mid-season break with a 3D episode on Monday, February 2. Baldwin is perhaps best known for playing Jayne Cobb in Joss Whedon's Firefly and Serenity (another largely wisecrackin' stoic role), and he got his start in 1980's My Bodyguard when he was still in high school.

A brief excerpt:

Drillbit Taylor
(2008)—"Disgruntled Bodyguard"
AB: There's a little clip out there on YouTube if you Google "Drillbit Taylor Bodyguard interview." Steve Brill, Michael J. Fox, Richard Dean Anderson, and I would all play hockey in a local actors' league together. Steve knew me from that, so he threw me in for a cameo. But I had to convince them it would be okay to let me wear the My Bodyguard jacket, which I still have. Their idea was to throw me in that cameo montage, but I figure if I'm gonna do it, I might as well do the character with the dirty white T-shirt and the jacket. It's a laugh for the parents taking their kids to see the movie who saw My Bodyguard in theaters. A friend of mine said, "Oh! I laughed when I saw it. My kids didn't get it, but I did."

AVC: Was it a retrospective moment, donning the jacket again?
AB: It still fits!

Today's News: Our Take

Summer Glau: TV's Terminator Guns for Shocking Reveals

Dec 15, 2008 - by Matt Mitovich

This Monday at 8 pm/ET, Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles presents a midseason finale which reveals one character's shocking secret, sets the stage for other surprises, and ultimately leaves Sarah herself in perhaps one of the last situations you'd imagine to find her in. Summer Glau shares a peek at the episode, shedding light on Cameron's "issues" with John's girlfriend and teasing insight into one of the series' biggest mysteries of all. (After this week, Sarah Connor returns Friday, Feb. 13, leading into the debut of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse.)

... TVGuide.com: Eliza Dushku told me she's excited to have Dollhouse sharing Friday nights with Sarah Connor. She sees it as a night of "female empowerment."
Glau: Yeah, me too. I think it's a good match.

TVGuide.com: Plus, you have that Joss Whedon connection. [Glau starred in the Firefly follow-up film, Serenity.]
Glau: We do, and I think the fans will band together and support us on Friday nights. We had a lot of competition on Monday, so I think this might be a good thing.

Stargate Atlantis - Jewel Staite - Visimag: Hollywood Hotline - Firefly Convention

At Visimag's Hollywood Hotline:

(Please follow the link for the complete article. Photos at the site.)

SUBJECT: Firefly/Serenity Convention

Science Fiction fans are the most loyal in the world; they’ll even come out to cheer on the stars of a TV series, Firefly, that only lasted two seasons, ending in 2003, and its critically-acclaimed subsequent 2004 movie, Serenity, that didn’t bring in enough box office revenue to qualify for a sequel. But to hear the audience who packed into a room at the Marriot Hotel in Burbank, California, burst into applause when members of the cast came on stage, you’d think it was the highest-rated show on TV now.

... Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee, the ship’s mechanic, followed Glass on stage. She immediately sat in the director’s chair provided for her, and seemed very relaxed as she spoke with the fans about Firefly, Serenity and her current stint as Dr Keller on Stargate Atlantis, in which she has blond hair. “I’m in a blond phase now,” she acknowledged. “I haven’t seen my real hair color in a very long time. I liked Kaylee with brown hair, it just felt right as she was earthy.”

When the series ended, Staite admitted that she took the ‘Kaylee’s Room’ door sign home with her. “Nathan [Fillion] took everything else – I’m not joking. I was concerned; I thought he was playing Firefly at home by himself. He actually gave me Alliance money once, and I told him, ‘It’s not real money you know!’”

From Quantum Mechinix:

Mal, Inara, Kayee and Jayne Immortalized!

Serenity: Big Damn Heroes Lithograph Set #1

$29.95

We love our captain – and the rest of Serenity's crew. That's why we called on Steve Anderson, one of the best portrait painters in the business (and creator of the Battlestar Galactica Starbuck and Number Six portraits), and asked him to capture the Big Damn Heroes in a special series of lithographs. Being a big Browncoat himself, Steve gladly agreed to take on the daunting task of capturing the personality, character and spirit of each BDH.

The result is a breathtaking series of museum-quality 13" x 19" lithographs, printed on 100-pound, satin-finish paper. The first set – featuring Mal, Inara, Kaylee and Jayne – retails for just $29.95. That's right, four lithographs of Serenity's crew, painted by one of the most renowned portrait artists working today, for just under $30.

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion)

Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin)

From Quantum Mechanix:

(Please follow the link for the complete contest information.)

"Lemme guess. It ain't what we bargained at."

"It ain't. It's more. It's millions."

A million credits. That's a lot of cashy money. And we want to give it to a lucky Browncoat.

But that ain't it. There's more. A whole gorram lot more.

The Serenity Bank Heist Money Pack was the very first item QMx produced. And with the money making an appearance in the Better Days comic, it seemed like a perfect chance to partner with Dark Horse Comics to say a big "thanks" to Serenity fans for their overwhelming support of QMx in its first year.

The event runs from June 30, 2008 through Sept. 30, 2008, and you can enter two ways:

The classic money packs will be available for just $17.95 during the giveaway. Every time you purchase a money pack from our online store at this here website (purchases must be made at quantummechanix.com to qualify) between June 30, 2008 and Sept. 30, 2008, your name will be entered into the drawing. You can also enter by completing and sending in the official entry form, no purchase necessary. Limit one entry form per household; void where prohibited.

And what will you win should your name get drawn? One of more than 30 of the finest and rarest Serenity collectibles in the 'Verse.

Grand Prizes:

- One million "Alliance credits," as inspired by the haul seen at the end of the first issue of Better Days, complete with replicas of the money bags seen in the Better Days comic.

- One of only three Little Damn Heroes Kaylee Maquette prototypes in existence, and the only one signed by Jewel Staite. This unique item is an artist proof of the upcoming Little Damn Heros limited-edition animated maquette titled "Shiny".

- A Malcolm Reynolds Stunt Pistol replica, including a stand and signature card signed by Nathan Fillion. This is same the pistol handled and reviewed by Nathan himself!

- An original set of the sold-out Serenity Blueprints, signed by the designers Geoffrey Mandel and Tim Earls. This is one of the extremely rare Final Engineering Proof sets.

Additional prizes include:

- 10 hardcover copies of Serenity: Those Left Behind.

- 10 of only 100 limited edition test prints of John Mullaney's Serenity in Flight.

- 10 copies of the fabled misprint Londinum posters.

Winners will be determined by random drawing, ranked in the order in which their names are drawn. All winners will be notified via e-mail no later than October 31, 2008.

Thanks again to the Browncoat community for making 2007 a great first year for QMx. Now let's see who's going to pull in "The Big Haul!"
