‘Supernatural’ looks to Season 6

By Greg David
2010-05-13

Sam and Dean return to their roots next year

The final battle is about to begin. In one corner, Sam Winchester (Jared Padelecki), a bunch of demons, Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) and the denizens of hell.

In the other, Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), a legion of angels (led by Misha Collins as Castiel) and those up in heaven. At stake? Nothing more than the future of humankind and earth.

So it’s pretty safe to say that the result of Supernatural’s May finale, the aptly titled “Swan Song,” will steer where the series goes in Season 6. After all, the heaven-versus-hell story arc took up almost every episode this year, and it ends tonight.

Some say not a moment too soon. There have been those (me included) who think the war between God and the Devil has been dragged out too long, what with tales of four horsemen, demons aplenty and dozens of irksome angels.
“Our main concern was not to slice the mythology thinner to drag it out any longer than it was designed to,” says Supernatural executive producer Sera Gamble. “That seems like a mean thing to do to viewers in exchange for making you successful and keeping you on the air. We want existing storylines to run their course, and then we figure it’s our job to bring in new stories.”

... The Supernatural season finale airs Thursday, May 13, at 9 p.m. ET on SunTV/CW.

Supernatural - Hot Cuppa TV: Jim Beaver Interview

Jim Beaver Left 'Deadwood' to Explore the 'Supernatural' and 'Harper's Island'

May 07, 2009

Fans of "Deadwood," David Milch's groundbreaking Western series for HBO, know Jim Beaver as Ellsworth, the irascible yet gentlemanly -- in his own profane way, like many folks on the show -- gold prospector who came to an unfortunate end, witnessed by his dog.

But Ellsworth's demise did nothing to slow down Beaver's career, as he can be seen concurrently as demon-hunter Bobby Singer on The CW's "Supernatural," airing Thursdays (the season finale airs next week); and as Sheriff Charlie Mills on the CBS mystery/drama limited series "Harper's Island," airing Saturdays (which, incidentally, also stars Katie Cassidy, who used to play the demon Ruby on "Supernatural" -- not to be confused with Irish actress Elaine Cassidy, who plays Mills' daughter on "Harper's Island).

He's also a screenwriter, a playwright and an author, with a new memoir, "Life's That Way." It's based on a series of e-mails that chronicles Beaver's efforts to deal with his wife Cecily's cancer diagnosis and death, and being a now-single father to their autistic daughter, Maddie.

Born in Wyoming as the son of a minister, Beaver spent much of his childhood and adolesence in Texas. He also volunteered for the Marine Corps and was active in the Marine Reserve until 1976. His acting career involves stage, film and television (including writing episodes for such TV shows as "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Tour of Duty").

Since Beaver is a writer, I asked him to pen some answers to questions, which are below. Enjoy.

A brief excerpt:

Q: What’s your relationship like with show stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles? A trio of Texans!
A: I don’t have the same relationship with Jared and Jensen that Bobby has with Sam and Dean. We’re much more on an even level, as far as I’m concerned. There’s no sense that I’m older and wiser, like there is with Bobby, no sense that Jim ever needs to straighten the two youngsters out like there sometimes is with Bobby. We’re three friends and colleagues, and I think there’s a lot of mutual respect that goes along with the friendship. If anything, I come to them for advice. It’s great being a trio of Texans, since it gives us all kind of that feeling of knowing the “secret handshake,” you know?

Apocalypse now

By Melissa Hank

2009-02-18

The first thing you notice about Supernatural is the blood. And the spilled intestines, egg-sized bruises, angry wounds and bodily fluids you didn’t even know humans had. Gives new meaning to the term “plasma TV”, right?

Then you notice the boys, Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) – the first with floppy hair and puppy-dog eyes, the second a hardened soul with rugged features and a too-smart mouth.

Most horror fans and swooning girls stop there. After all, the CW series doesn’t promise a premise more complex than your average Freddy Krueger flick: two brothers cruise the country in their 1967 Chevrolet Impala, killing demons that terrorize decent hardworking folk. If they’re lucky, they’ll happen upon the one that killed their mother when they were tots.

If not, meh. There are plenty of rougarous, shapeshifters, witches, crocottas, changelings and vampires to just begging to be wasted. At least that’s the tale creator Eric Kripke told in the show’s first two seasons.

That’s before Sam and Dean accidentally opened the gates of hell and loosed a swarm of demons on Earth, before Dean made a deal that banished him to the eternal hot box, and before the angel Castiel (Misha Collins) pulled him out so he could stop mega-demon Lilith from opening the 66 seals that would free Lucifer.

Now, in the fourth season, the outlook is even graver, so to speak. The epic battle between good and evil, between angels and demons, is brewing – and heaven help the Winchesters if they’re caught in the middle when it hits the boiling point.
“Going in, I thought the show was cheesier than it is,” says Collins. “Before, you had the monster of the week, a light sci-fi romp. And they did a good job of it. But [now] there’s another aspect – the relationship between the two brothers, their inner turmoil. Meta-ideas and apocalyptic concepts of heaven and hell. And do the ends justify the means? ...”

Supernatural airs Thursdays, 9 p.m. ET, on The CW, and Fridays, 9 p.m. ET, on Space.

Jared Padalecki - Media Blvd. Magazine: Friday the 13th - Interview

Jared Padalecki Stars In the Remake of 'Friday the 13th'

Friday, 13 February 2009

By Christina Radish

In New Line Cinema’s chilling re-imagining of the classic horror film Friday the 13th, Clay Miller (Jared Padalecki) heads up to the eerie woods of legendary Crystal Lake, in search of his missing sister, Whitney (Amanda Righetti). Against the advice of police and cautions from the locals, Clay pursues what few leads he has, with the help of Jenna (Danielle Panabaker), a young woman he meets among a group of college kids, having an all-thrills weekend. But, they are all about to find much more than they bargained for, as they’ve entered the domain of one of the most terrifying killers in American film history -- Jason Voorhes (Derek Mears).

Currently filming the fourth season of The CW’s successful thriller Supernatural, in which he stars as Sam Winchester, the reluctant hero who joins his brother (Jensen Ackles) to save the world from unseen forces, Jared Padalecki decided to spend his last hiatus filming the creepy flick. The 26-year-old San Antonio, Texas native spoke to MediaBlvd Magazine about going head-to-head with such an iconic horror figure.

A brief excerpt:

MediaBlvd Magazine> The original film series wasn’t big on character and acting. Did you have any doubts about doing this, before you got the script? Were you surprised that there was so much to do in this one?
Jared Padalecki> Before I got the script, honestly, my thought was, “Man, I really like Friday the 13th.” And, I’d seen the Texas Chainsaw Massacre that they had done and loved it. We actually watched it before we started shooting House of Wax, and Joel Silver said, “This is what we’re doing. We’re trying to remake a classic, and make it new, fun, modern, sexy and scary.” We watched it and all of us were like, “That was a really good movie! That was a really well shot, really scary, really real movie, and the characters were fun.” You felt for them and you could identify with them. They actually had hearts, which is nice because I love cheesy horror for the sake of horror, death for the sake of death. As an actor, it’s fun to go, “Hey, kill me. Fine. That’s cool. Make it fun, but give me something to do. Give me something to make it real for myself, so I’m not just running around going, ‘Oh, when is it my turn to die?’” So, it was exciting to read the script, and then to sit down with Brad Fuller and Andrew Form and hear, “We’re going to try and plug into the reality and make it real.” It’s so funny because you’re filming a movie about a guy who’s immortal, and he’s going to go kill everybody in the woods, but we’d sit down and be like, “This doesn’t feel real.” Sometimes we’d pause for 30 minutes, and we’d sit down and fix it, so that it seemed more real. That was nice to be a part of.

Friday the 13th's Jared Padalecki: Not a D-bag

By Patrick Lee

ON 02/05/09

Jared Padalecki, who plays a new character named Clay in the upcoming reboot of Friday the 13th, told reporters that he's happy to play practically the only male character who's neither a hockey-masked serial killer nor a douchebag.
"I like to think that it was just me not being a douchebag, yeah," Padalecki said with tongue in cheek in a group interview in Beverly Hills, Calif., over the weekend. "No, it was nice. ... I've been the kind of douchy character, so it was nice to have a little vacation from it."

Padalecki plays a man who searches for his sister, Whitney (Amanda Righetti), in the small town of Crystal Lake. Whitney went camping with some friends six weeks earlier and hasn't been seen or heard from since. Padalecki finds himself on the run from the resident psycho who lives in the woods: Jason Voorhees, played by Derek Mears.

Following is an edited version of our interview with Padalecki, who was charming, self-effacing and cheerful despite our rude questions. Friday the 13th opens Feb. 13.

A brief excerpt:

We were on set watching you get your face smashed into the bus glass. Was that you?
Padalecki: Yeah. Do you know that really cut me up?

Really?
Padalecki: It was my forehead. That was actually funny, because they were doing that head-through-the-bus-window thing, and I was, like, how is this staying? And they're like, "Well, there's ... an inch of clear plastic or whatever [underneath]. ... So make sure you don't hit it." I was like, "OK." And so we kind of did it, and I hit it, and ... I knew my face was going to smash the glass. It was candy glass or whatever. Everybody did it before me to appease me and ease my concerns. But then we did it, and I was like, "I think [touches his forehead for blood] ... " And ... they ... looked at me. I had fake blood all over me anyway, and they're like, "No, no, no, you're good." And I was like, "You're sure? ... OK, whatever." And sure enough, we go back and wash, and I have like a little gash on my forehead. Yeah. So I cried and, you know, I sued, I sued for a sequel. Saturday the 14th? Comes out next year. [laughs]

Supernatural's Jared Padelecki hints that Sam will dance with the devil

By Patrick Lee

ON 02/01/09

Jared Padalecki
, who plays Sam Winchester on The CW's Supernatural, said that he's sure his demon-hunter character will have to deal with the consequences of using his mystical powers as the current season wraps.
"By the end of the season, I'm sure they're going to do something big, and ... —I'm speaking as an audience member—but I'm sure we're going to see Sam go dark side or get very, very close to going to [the] dark side," Padalecki said in a group interview on Saturday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting his upcoming movie, Friday the 13th.

... A lot depends on whether Supernatural gets picked up for a fifth season, Padalecki says. "I hate it, because we're on the sort of brink where it's like, 'Well, are we going to come back? Do we know if we're going to come back for another year, or should we wrap it up?' ... That's where TV is just a pain in the ass, because you're like, 'Just tell me how long I have so I know how to tell a story.' As opposed to 'Let's keep asking questions. Let's keep answering them with more questions.' I hate it. I hate it. It's really frustrating. But I'm sure something'll happen." Supernatural airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Today's News: Our Take

Supernatural's Ruby: "I Feel Like, Deep Down, She's In Love with Sam"

Nov 19, 2008 04:35 PM ET by Matt Mitovich

Now that she's got nine episodes of Supernatural (Thursdays at 9 pm/ET, the CW) under her belt and Ruby's complicated story is beginning to be fleshed out, TVGuide.com felt the time was right to talk to former Wildfire star Genevieve Cortese about playing the double-agent demon. Might Ruby actually be in love with Sam? What sort of surprises might this week's midseason finale have in store? And what's it like shooting a love scene with Jared Padalecki? Let's find out....

... TVGuide.com: The fans seemed to pick up on that right away — "Something is different about Ruby. Is it simply a new actress playing her, or something more?"
Cortese: If you look at Katie's last episode, you see that while Ruby's not responsible for Dean going to hell, she does have some guilt about it. I wanted to use some of that, though not as a sympathy card. After all, if people don't like her, they don't like her. She is a demon. But I wanted to address questions like, "Why are the boys hanging out with her? What do they need her for at this point?" It's not like she is kicking ass; she's asking Sam to kick ass for her, so it's kind of a mutual exchange. I almost feel like, deep down, she's really in love with Sam. One of the lines in [last week's episode] is, "I used to be human, and I still remember what it feels like." Maybe she was being manipulative, sure, but maybe there's also truth to it.

Jared Padalecki Fannish Inquisition

Back in issue 170 of SFX we printed a selection of questions that you wanted to ask Jared Padalecki, aka Sam Winchester in Supernatural. Did you miss out on the feature? Or did you ask a question and want to know if we asked it on your behalf? Here's the full version of our interview!

... I notice you take your two dogs to work with you. What are their names, and how well-behaved are they? - Adele
"Harley and Sadie. They're both rescue dogs – Sadie's a four and a half year old German Shepherd-dingo mix and Harley's a three and a half year old Japanese mastiff mix. They're rescues, so you don't know exactly what they are. But they're pretty well-behaved, everyone on set loves them and it's great to come back to my trailer, especially during a crazy day, just to come back and sit down on my couch and have my dogs' heads in my lap, and play with them and pet 'em... you know. Right when you walk in the trailer they're just so excited to see you. I'll take 'em out and play ball with them at lunch, stuff like that. And people will take them out, people love them, so they're very well-received."

... You had Linda Blair (from The Exorcist) in an episode of series 2. Are there any other horror/SF icons you'd love to get on the show? - Wolf 359
I'd love to see some more either sci-fi or horror legends on the show, like Bruce Campbell or Leonard Nimoy, or someone from the genre that I love. They're who I first think about when I think about who I would like on the show. Obviously there are so many actors and actresses that I'm a fan of, but specifically for the better of the show, I’d love to have more of the genre actors on the show. We've had a few people from Buffy and Angel and a couple that've done X-Files, obviously, shooting in Vancouver. So I'd love to have some more people that are known in the genre."
