Burn Notice - Cinema Blend: Jeffrey Donovan Interview

Interview: Jeffrey Donovan Talks Burn Notice

By Steve West
2009-02-27

Jeffrey Donovan is the perfect guy as Michael Westen. Charming, capable, good hearted, and a bad ass. He’s the guy every other guy wants to be friends with, and most girls wish their guy could be. Hell, most guys are OK with their girl fawning all over this man. I mean, he made an X-ray machine in the trunk of a car. That has to put a person on some level of awesome beyond mortal man.

Jeffrey Donovan himself is just as charming as his fictional counterpart, and he’s gracious to boot. The success of Burn Notice hasn’t gone to his head. He realizes what a great opportunity it is, and as you can tell from the roundtable interview below he appreciates it all. Read on to hear Donovan talk about the season 2 finale of Burn Notice, as well as what we might expect as the show continues on.

A brief excerpt:

You’re headed to season 3, you’ve renegotiated your contract; did you ever expect that Burn Notice was going to become the success it has?
Jeffrey: You know, I don’t think anyone goes into projects thinking they’ll fail. I think we all believe that what we’re doing is going to be good. But more specifically with me and that mix we sat down and very pointedly said to each other we’re going to make a TV show that we would watch, that we would be interested in, not the networks, not the fans, not anybody, just us. What would we want to do because we have to do this for seven years; and that was the pilot.

And that it was received so well critically and that the fans, you know, started seeing us a couple million and has grown to over five million is just - it’s just icing on the cake of what we started with at the beginning which was pursue something you believe in with your entire heart in your craft and want to do that and only that and don’t you feed to well we’ll milk it down, we’ll water it down. Make what you want and see if it sticks.

And USA was so gracious to give us that room and let it grow and it’s been growing ever since.

But with the planet falling victim to an incurable wasting sickness, and two of Colonel Sheppard’s team going missing, the secrets of the Aegis must be revealed. The shocking truth threatens to tear Herunn society apart, bringing down upon them the scourge of the Wraith. Yet even with a Hive ship poised to attack there is much more at stake than the fate of one small planet.

For the Aegis conceals a threat so catastrophic that the Atlantis team must risk everything to eliminate it from the Pegasus galaxy...

Lou Diamond Phillips, Ming-Na join Stargate Universe cast

By Patrick Lee
ON 02/25/09

SCI FI Channel announced the casting of Lou Diamond Phillips, Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman in its new original series Stargate Universe, which began production last week in Vancouver, Canada.

... The two-part premiere of SGU is being directed by Andy Mikita (Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1) and shot by Rohn Schmidt (The Shield, The Mist). Brad Wright and Robert Cooper (Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis) will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

... Here's how SCI FI describes the cast:

... Phillips is Col. Telford, a proud lifelong military man, who puts his faith in the chain of command. Stubbornly confident, he's highly regarded by his superiors. He is the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition.

... Levesque stars as Chloe Armstrong, the daughter and aide of a U.S. Senator. Politically savvy, but with a wild side, she is considering following in her father's footsteps until she finds herself trapped on the ship. As tensions rise, her character will be tested and her place among the group revealed.

... Huffman portrays Master Sgt. Tamara Johansen. Unable to afford medical school, the strong-willed field medic saw the Air Force as the best option. Faced with the mounting pressure and a lack of in-depth experience, she will be forced to rise to the occasion as she treats the seriously wounded.

... Ming-Na is Camile Wray, a human resources executive with the international oversight committee that governs the Stargate program. Now the highest-ranking member of that division left stranded on the ship, she carries herself with a misguided sense of superiority over the other military and civilian survivors.

Stargate Atlantis - GateWorld: Robert Picardo Video/Audio Interview

At GateWorld:

(Please follow the link to view the video in its original format.)

MAN IN A SUIT

GateWorld talks with Robert Picardo

Has it really been almost six years since Robert Picardo walked on to the scenes as NID Agent Richard Woolsey? A familiar face in the science fiction world, Picardo's character introduced a friction between Stargate Command and Washington initially, but eventually would grow to become a great advocate for the Stargate programs.

GateWorld talks with Picardo about his fifth season stint as commander of Atlantis base and whether or not this made sense for the character. He also introduces his family of pets. We talk about the legacy of both Stargate and Star Trek, and his current projects both on screen and with the Planetary Society.

GateWorld's interview with Bob runs almost 49 minutes, and is available in video, audio, and transcript form! The video version below requires QuickTime, but it is is also available in Flash format at GateWorld Play.

For the audio version you can listen online at your leisure, or download it to your MP3 player.

A brief excerpt:

GW: Do you think it was good that Atlantis ended its series run and is now doing DVD movies or do you think it's too early to speculate on that?
RP: It's too early to say. I am confident they will make the first movie. They've made the announcement. They haven't picked a time yet. None of the actors have been contacted yet, but I believe that they intend to do it. And I believe even the SCI FI Channel has made some sort of ...

GW: I think they're going to run it.
RP: I do believe it will happen. I hope it's a great success. It would be wonderful if, once or twice a year, you could be a Stargate fan watching Stargate Universe and get your weekly fix of new Stargate, but you could still keep abreast of the other Stargate branches with yearly installments.

The SG-1 movies have been wildly successful, way beyond the studio expectations. I hope that that bodes well for Atlantis.

Leveraging a hit with Christian Kane

Leverage's southern heat

by Cynthia Boris

Leverage says goodbye tonight. As incredible as it may seem, tonight is the season finale of TNT's new heist show! I've been hooked from day one and in that I am not alone. Clever writing, fantastic chemistry and a wry sense of humor make this show appointment TV at our house. So I couldn't have been more thrilled when I heard that the show had been picked up for a second season.

The Leverage cast and crew will be back at work very soon, producing new episodes for a season premiere sometime in June. In the meantime, I snuck in a little time with Christian Kane who plays hired gun Eliott Spencer on the series. What was this country music crooner turned TV tough guy doing when I called? Hawking Maverix, his line of ladies lingerie, in Las Vegas, I kid you not.

A brief excerpt:

Leverage and lingerie?

SheKnows: So what was the incentive to start your own ladies lingerie line?
Christian Kane: I loved Victoria’s Secret for a long time; to me, and I gotta be honest with you, they’ve become Fredrick’s of Hollywood, its smut. I don’t like it anymore, I don’t like the colors, I don’t like the way that they’re designed. Everything’s pink now, neon pink, and it’s just not my color. What we’re trying to do is put some class and romance back in the bedroom and that’s what I fell in love with in lingerie. It’s weird for me to be such a tough guy on TV and just start talking about women’s clothing, but it’s because I love women and I hate the fact that these people have made you believe that you’ve got to get dressed up in something that shows everything. The fact is, I don’t want to see everything, man. The romance and the love of getting to where you’re going is what lingerie was created for and that’s what we kinda come back to -- a French couture type design. We’ve got some really good corsets and stuff like that. You know, it’s all about the romance and when you take it away ...

Michelle Forbes interviewed

Tuesday February 24, 2009

Smarten up and salute Cain, people, because we've been talking to Michelle Forbes at Starfury's Battlestar Galactica convention.

Born in Texas in January 1965, Forbes is perhaps best known from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Homicide: Life on the Street. After Battlestar, where she made a brief but important appearance as Admiral Cain, she's now in True Blood. The rest of this interview will be appearing in our amazing Battlestar Galactica-themed special issue, on sale Wednesday 4 March with posters and gifts! But we thought you might like this brief snippet as a little treat to get you in the mood:

A brief excerpt:

SFX: What sort of response do your characters get at conventions around the world?
Forbes: "Oh my God! Battlestar is shockingly popular in Germany. In Germany we had 4000 people at a convention. It's amazing how far people travel. People were travelling in from Italy - it blows my mind actually. It's such a universal thing, and Germans are big into science fiction. Turns out Germans and criminals on Death Row were my biggest fans from the Star Trek days. I guess they were running it a lot in Germany. But the Death Row thing… I don't want to get a complex! I used to get a lot of prison letters but that's sort of calmed down. I think it's because of some of the characters I've played I've always had a bit of an interesting fan base."

Don't forget to watch Battlestar Galactica on Sky1 tonight, UK viewers! There's a little interview with fellow actor Nicki Clyne online already here and one with Jen Halley here. True Blood will be coming to the UK later this year, broadcast first on the FX channel and then on Channel 4.

President Roslin Speaks -- Q&A With 'Battlestar Galactica's' Mary McDonnell

February 23, 2009

With only a few episodes left of Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica," airing Fridays, fans will soon know the ultimate fates of all the characters -- and one of the most interesting is likely to be that of President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell).

Simultaneously battling breast cancer, leading her people on a flight across space from implacable enemies and acting as an agent of religious prophecy -- and, of late, carrying on a torrid, possibly doomed, romance with Adm. William Adama (Edward James Olmos) -- Roslin is the textbook definition of a well-rounded character.

McDonnell was gracious enough to answer some email questions about the show and her character. Enjoy.

A brief excerpt:

Q: There are not many TV romances between mature people. Roslin and Adama – what have you enjoyed most about playing this relationship?
A: One of the reasons that I enjoyed Adama/ Roslin so very much was the utter compatibility between Eddie and myself. There was never really a question of how do we do this. Sometimes you get lucky in your work. Ed and I had an instant and deep respect for each other that naturally grew into a fondness. I think that is what mature relationships are made of.

They are completely authentic and earned through an experience of other as partner and soul mate. The audience (both the younger and more mature) LOVED this relationship because it created hope and because it was based on total acceptance of the other person regardless of differences.
