Season-Five Premiere Pulls 1.8 Million Viewers

Sci Fi Channel said the Stargate Atlantis season-five premiere—introducing new cast member Robert Picardo—drew 1.8 million total viewers, up 6% over the season-four premiere in September 2007.

Sci Fi said the episode’s 1.05 million viewers ages 25-54 marks a 9% improvement over the season-four premiere and that the household rating of 1.3 was 8% better than the S4 start.

PRODUCTION

A new recurring character is introduced in this episode, though many of her scenes scripted for this episode were cut. Leela Savasta plays Captain Alicia Vega (originally to be named Alison Porter -- a name given to a different character who will appear in "Whispers" later this season), the gun-toting soldier who has just joined the Atlantis expedition from Earth. Savasta will return for a larger role in "Whispers."

The original script revealed that Vega had arrived on the base one week before the episode's start, and is a bit frustrated that she has not yet been assigned to a team. One cut scene was an exchange with Colonel Carter in her office above the Atlantis control room, before Lt. Edison arrives through the Stargate. Another scene, at the end of the episode, saw Vega trying to make friends with Dr. Keller.

Fifth Time's the Charm

Welcome back, loyal Stargate fans, to the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis. Who'd have thunk it? Me. I thought it would happen. But then again, I pick the Broncos to win the Super Bowl every year, so maybe it's just blind luck. In any case, we're well on our way to our 100th episode, and it's going to be an exciting season of Stargate.

Lastly, I chatted with Martin Q. Gero, who penned the season premiere you'll see this Friday, entitled "Search and Rescue." He said this episode is jam-packed, it being basically the culmination of 10 previous episodes of story. It also contains his favourite McKay/Teyla scene of all time. He mentioned that the art department and
construction crew did a masterful job turning one of our standing sets into a massive debris field. And lastly, he noted this is the first season premiere that Andy Mikita has directed, and as you might have guessed, he knocked it out of the park.

Also, get ready for the release of Stargate Continuum in late July!

Put simply, I loved this episode.

You will not be disappointed this year if the premier is any indication of how the entire season will turn out, and I've no doubt that if they continue hitting their marks just as they've done with Search & Rescue that a sixth season will be ordered. That doesn't mean that it's going to come free, though. If you want it as a fan, your job is to watch it on TV instead of on your computer and to introduce your friends and family to the show if you can.

The more people that watch this show, the better.

It really deserves it.

Labellementeuse writes: "I've heard rumblings that the all-woman gate team will first be met on a survey on a planet accompanied by John (even though there's already military on the team) and Carson (even though there's already a doctor on the team.) This can't be right! Surely John and Carson show up after something particularly in
Carson's field was found, and John tagged along because he was bored? I know you wouldn't want to imply that the all-girl team needs male supervision, as the rumours I've heard imply.

Equally, I'm sure you didn't consider introducing the all-female team in one episode, only to kill a bunch of them (here, have an all girl team - haha, sorry, we killed them!) Or in a horror episode so that you can have lots of screaming women running around to conform to the genre's worst stereotypes. Right?"

Answer: Right. So I assume if John and Carson show up after something, oh, particular in Carson's field was found, and John simply tagged along, and we actually offer up an explanation for the atypical all-female team, and don't have them running around to conform to the genre's worst stereotype but present them as strong, level-headed individuals - then I'm sure that when the episode finally airs and all of the criticism proves unfounded, the production offices will be inundated with letters of apology from the pre-emptive critics out there.


Zona writes: "I just realized that in your shots from `Ghost in the Machine' Ronon still has his signature dreadlocks. Did the plan for them to go in `Broken Ties' change or is it simple a case of things still being shot out of sequence?"

Answer: After much discussion it was decided that while Jason could lose his dreads, the character of Ronon would be keeping his.

Answer: Yep. Next Tuesday.

...From the culinary to the literary - I finished up The Keep last night and spent the morning composing my thoughts for tomorrow's book discussion. Again, a reminder to get your questions and comments for author F. Paul Wilson in early as I'll be collecting them over the next couple of days and then sending them his way mid-week.

Prep begins tomorrow on Whispers. Looks like it's going to be a full day: 8:30 (Concept meeting), 12:00 (Art Department meeting), 13:30 (Prosthetics meeting), 14:00 (Costumes meeting), 15:30 (Props meeting). The second Fog Test has been moved to later in the week.

April 12, 2008: Don't judge a book by its drop-dead gorgeous cover

Well, as expected, reaction to the Whispers casting news has ranged from excitement and anxious anticipation to "Hey, Joe. Couldn't you cast anyone hideous?" Well, sure, we could have - but rather than basing our casting decision on looks, we chose to pick the best actress for each of the three roles.

I envisioned Teldy as a strong, by-the-book, leader; someone capable of leading her team into battle and going toe to toe with whatever is thrown her way be it an off-world mystery, an alien threat, or Colonel John Sheppard. There were a number of interesting candidates in the running, but after viewing Christina Cox's late audition it was hard to see anyone else in the role. Those familiar with Christina's work on shows like Blood Ties, Bones, and House know that she's an accomplished performer possessed of a commanding presence. Exactly what we were looking for in this case.

The search for someone to play the part of Dr. Alison Porter proved surprisingly tricky. Although she's described as a "cute nerd", Porter is really the most nuanced character of the bunch. The only non-military personnel on Teldy's team, she is in some ways her own little island - the most vulnerable of the foursome and yet, at the
same time, the most dynamic given the circumstances. Nicole de Boer actually read for Teldy and, as we sat there watching her audition, Paul and I thought exactly the same thing: "We've found our Porter!".

Nicole is an actress who, I'm sure, needs no introduction, having been a regular on shows like The Dead Zone and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She is someone we've been wanting to get on the show for a while now and we're pleased the opportunity has finally presented itself.

Of all the characters, the tough, wise-cracking Dusty was the most fun to write - and the most frustrating to cast. The fact is, there were a lot of great candidates for the role and, in the end, it came down to two terrific actresses. Janina Gavankar got the nod on the strength of her ballsy read and wonderful comic timing. Those of you who may not be familiar with Janina's range should check out her run as Papi on The L Word.

Over the hiatus, I pitched out the idea of introducing an all-female team as a means of addressing the male-female imbalance on the show. I would introduce them in an early script and whoever survived the episode could potentially be brought back as a recurring character. As Martin started work on the season premiere, Search and Rescue, he suggested he introduce one of the team members in his episode - a character that eventually became Captain Alicia Vega. Leela Savasta came in and delivered a fantastic audition for the role. Our reaction upon watching the video of her session was something along the lines of: "Hey, where the hell did she come from?" After 11+ years of Stargate, you think you've pretty much seen everyone in town - and then some young and talented newcomer appears on the scene. The last time we had a "Hey, where the hell did she come from?" reaction, it was a couple of years ago while watching an equally talented young up-and-comer audition for a two-line part on SG-1. We didn't cast her because it was such a small part that we figured we could give her a meatier role later in the season. When later came, I called up our local casting director and asked if we could see her again. "Sorry," he replied. "She's shooting a pilot in Hawaii." The pilot: Lost. The actress: Evangeline Lily. And, yep, I think Leela has the potential to be just as successful.

PG15 writes: "What do you think about removing one of Atlantis's piers, permanently, during some battle or explosion or something? Do you guys think you'll ever do something like that, damage one of the show's vehicles permanently?"

Answer: It's possible, but I'm reluctant to make a change for the sake of one episode that would effectively render all of our existing city establishing shots useless.

Answer: That depends on a lot of things. First and foremost = who survives the episode.

Answer: They're still standing. But when it comes time to tearing them down and tossing out the old gate, I'll give you a heads up. Do you think you'd have room for it in your backyard?

Answer: If by "everyone" you mean yourself, then - no. I've never known David to be anything but great in interviews and the special features.
