Katee Sackhoff almost didn't make it to Starfest this year. After having been bumped from her flight Friday night from sunny Los Angeles, she arrived in Denver to a winter wonderland with more than a foot of snow on the ground. But the Oregon native took it all in stride.

Katee, until recently, portrayed the character of Kara Thrace, the re-imagined Starbuck, in Ron Moore's update of the TV series Battlestar Galactica. The re-envisioning of the character generated quite a bit of controversy both in the media and amongst the fans -- something Ms. Sackhoff didn't shy from.

In our video interview, we talk with her about how it was natural for her to meet the controversy head on and the challenges of playing Kara Thrace. She also talks about how Michael Trucco's real life injury in a serious car accident changed the way she thought about her character and may have altered the ultimate fate of Starbuck.

As if "BSG" fans weren't having enough fun at the weekly Bagdad theater screenings of "Battlestar Galactica" in its final season, Portland's own Katee Sackhoff will be attending Friday night's screening. The free screening series hosted by KUFO-FM radio's Cort and Fatboy already welcomed Portland-bred executive producer and writer Mark Verheiden a few weeks back.

Katee Sackhoff bids farewell to Starbuck and 'Battlestar,' but her lips are sealed

As the tough-talking maverick pilot, she's a fan favorite. But please don't ask her how the series ends.

When the directors of Sci-Fi Channel's re-imagined "Battlestar Galactica" held an open casting call for the role of Lt. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, they were looking for a mid-30s actress with a tough military demeanor. But it was Katee Sackhoff, then in her early 20s, who won the part with her high heels and persistence.

"Everyone scoffed at the idea of Starbuck in high heels," Sackhoff said, looking back on the role, originally for a 2003 miniseries that became a series in January 2005. "That's who she was in my mind. That's me: No one is going to tell me to take my high heels off, and I carried that throughout her attitude. Maybe not the high heels, per se, but Starbuck's attitude was there from the very beginning with me."

... Though fans might find it difficult to say goodbye to Starbuck, Sackhoff said that leaving the relationships she's formed with the cast and crew on the show would be the hardest part for her.

"We didn't have one bad apple in the show, from the crew to the cast," Sackhoff said. "If we did, they disappeared quietly into the night, and nobody remembers them. They really, really paid attention to people's personalities, not when they were casting, but when we were working. I think that it shows."

“The Cylons were created by man. They were created to make life easier on the 12 colonies. And then the day came when the Cylons decided to kill their masters.”

So began the 2003 reimagining of Battlestar Galactica, a startling new kind of science fiction and a far cry from the kitschy, kid-appeal series of the same name that aired on ABC in the late ’70s. This new Battlestar was raw, dense and uncomfortably familiar to us in our post-9/11 world. It took the war on terror and sent it into deep space, drawing clear parallels between the humanoid Cylons and the sleeper agents of al Qaeda. In this paranoia-filled universe, nuclear bombs have killed all but about 40,000 humans, whose goal to get to a fabled land called Earth ended tragically last year when they arrived only to find that it, too, was in nuclear ruin. But then, that’s BSG shockingly unpredictable to the end. Despite critical hosannas, a Peabody Award and the obsessive devotion of fans, the series will conclude its four-season run on March 20 with a rabidly guarded two-hour finale. Here, exec producers Ron Moore and David Eick and the cast get their geek on one last time as they share their favorite memories of life aboard the beloved mothership.

"We quickly zeroed in on Mary McDonnell and Eddie Olmos because we loved Mary in "Donnie Darko," and the stoic, stern, scary character that Eddie played in "Blade Runner." But we couldn't find our Starbuck, which was the most controversial role. When I was home rewatching some audition videos, my wife walked by and saw Katee Sackhoff and said, "What's wrong with you, David? She's right there!" I rewound and she was right. Katee, although a lot younger and stockier than we imagined, was fantastic!"
