Stargate Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog: Assorted SGU Tidbits!

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for March 23, 2010:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update and to view the SGU production artwork from 'Life.')

Assorted SGU Tidbits! Feeling (King) Crabby! And Somewhat Pig-Headed!

This morning, I met the positively delightful actress who’ll be playing the role of Ginn in season 2. Loved her in Mad Men. Apparently, she’s already worked in Vancouver (most recently on Supernatural), loves the city, and already has plans to hit some of her favorite food spots. After her wardrobe fitting and a visit to hair and make-up of course.

[Could that actress be Sarah Drew? She guest starred in Mad Men, and filmed Supernatural's 'Swap Meat' in January '10 ... or Julie McNiven who also was in Mad Men and portrayed Anna the Angel in Supernatural?]

At lunch today, Paul [Mullie] pointed out that we have a lot of “horse television” experience on the SGU writing staff. Brad [Wright] got his start on Black Stallion, Remi [Aubuchon] and Linda [McGibney] worked on Wildfire, while Carl [Binder] also worked on Black Stallion in addition to spending a few seasons on the equine-friendly set of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. So why, may I ask, hasn’t anyone come up with a good horse-based episode yet? Great question that I, being more of a cartoon jungle animal guy, am unable to answer...

Stargate Universe / Atlantis - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog - MORE SGA Production Artwork

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for March 19, 2010:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update and to view ALL the SGA production artwork photos in their original format)

A pitiful sight! Production goings-on! Brackets busted! And more from the Atlantis Art Department Archives!

... Got most of the notes for my Resurgence outline (episode 10) and, while I’m still a little leery about the third act, I’m just going to forge ahead. I feel it might be a little short but Brad [Wright] was quick to point out that I thought Incursion would be short – and it turned into a two-parter.

VFX Supervisor Mark Savela came by the offices today to solicit our opinions on the fast-developing new aliens. Paul [Mullie] felt the hands were too large, the fingers too pointy, while my main concern was the potential expressiveness of the face (or, at this point, lack thereof). Mark assured me that they were in the early stages and, as things progressed, they’d be adding layers (ie. musculature and flesh) that will address my concerns.

Second cast read-thru today. It included regulars and a few recurring including that Prison Break veteran I mentioned in a previous entry. Very nice guy – unlike the character he plays on SGU. Or Heroes for that matter...

[NOTE: Could Joe be referring to Robert Knepper? Hmmmm...]

[Update: March 20 '10: Spoiler TV confirms Robert Knepper will have a recurring role in season two of Stargate Universe.]

... More goodies from the Stargate: Atlantis Art Department archives:

Stargate Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog: MORE SGU Production Art Work

SGU Season 2 Production Day #1! More Art Department Package Peeks from Air 1-3! Icarus Base! Homeworld Command! The Hammond!

According to the call sheet I discovered sitting in my mailbox early this morning, we have apparently started shooting Stargate: Universe’s second season. This is exciting for many reasons, the chiefest, of course, being the return of the catering truck. Alas, we’re on location until Friday and, thus, won’t see our lovable cast and crew (and Anthea’s equally lovable desserts) until Monday. In the meantime, we’re keeping busy on the home front. Paul [Mullie] has wall-to-wall meetings as prep begins on Intervention, while Remi, Linda, and I muse over our respective outlines. I also get to ponder the batch of notes I received on my first script, Awakening, as it heads toward Blue Draft status.

... Now, where did we leave off yesterday? Oh, yeah. We were perusing the Art Department package for SGU’s three-part opener, Air, and were about to get into Icarus Base, Homeworld Command, and The Hammond…

Ext. Icarus Base - Stargate: Universe, Season One, Air. The concept is illustrated, the actual shot all CG.

Okay, tomorrow I’ll post design work and schematics of the Destiny shuttle. Promise!

In the meantime, for those of you still playing along with the second round of Guess the Episode Titles…

Stargate: Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog - Production Updates Apr 23 '09

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for April 23, 2009:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update.)

April 23, 2009: It’s Like That Episode Of SG-1 Where The Team Has To Introduce A Foreign Element Into the Sun Of Another Planet In Order To Save The World’s Inhabitants Except That Instead Of “The Team” It’s “Me” And Instead of “Introducing A Foreign Element Into A Sun” It’s “Making This Entry” And Instead Of “Save The World’s Inhabitants” It’s “Entertain The Readers Of This Blog”. Oh, And A Production Update.

... Will Waring is directing Brian J. Smith (Lt. Scott) and Justin Louis (Col. Young) over on Stage 2 (set codename: Hoth).

Director Andy Mikita is over on Stage 4 taking a wandering camera tour of the Destiny set.

Robert Cooper is working on his producer’s cut of Earth and is awaiting notes on his brilliant script for Time as his prep week approaches.

Brad Wright shifts gears after putting out both Darkness and Light, looking to hammer down the story for episode 13.

My writing partner Paul [Mullie] continues work on Divided. According to him, there’s a lot of story and he fears the script may go long. Which would be par for the course.

Carl Binder will be assuming revision duties on Faith, episode 12.

Oh, and I found the time to do another pass on that Atlantis movie script. I wanted to have another go at the Beckett-Teyla scene but was sidetracked by a new script, an impromptu writer’s meeting, lunch (priorities, yes?), and an all new, all tight producer’s cut of Air I and II. That Destiny is a mighty cool-looking ship.

Finally, a reminder to Producer John G. Lenic, who has been with the franchise since The Children of the Gods pilot, will be taking your questions, so if you want to ask him anything about his 10 years on SG-1, 5 years on Atlantis, 2 SG-1 movies, or his time on Universe, start posting…

Stargate: Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog Update Apr 21 '09

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for April 21, 2009:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update.)

April 21, 2009: Advice and Observation Cookies, In Life We Are All Winners (Although Some Of Us Are Clearly Bigger Winners Than Others), More Scripts On Deck, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots on Hoth.

... Hey, I read the first draft of Time yesterday (Rob apparently wrote it during his free time driving to and from work every day) and it is brilliant. Now “brilliant” is a word I tend to reserve for works of supreme magnificence like Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” or my Aunt Fannie’s Russian Teacakes, but it applies here to a script that is, without a doubt, the very best of its kind. It’s delightfully intricate and thoroughly engaging, full of surprising twists and heart-rending character moments.

And speaking of character moments - today, I read Brad’s finished version of Darkness and Light. This one has got me very excited as well, particularly for the remained climactic sequence.

After lunch, Carl, Paul, Lawren, and I headed over to the set in Stage 2 or what I’m referring to as Hoth. Brian and Justin regaled us with their interpretation of Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots after which we chatted until the airborne particulates threatened to choke off my airway, forcing me back out - but not before marveling over Brian’s commitment to learning everything he can about the production process. Not only does he hang around set to watch them shoot scenes he isn’t even in but, the other day, he actually accompanied Carl and co. on a location survey! Not only does this kid have a terrific attitude - polite, humble, hardworking - but he’s a fantastic actor as well. Since nobody’s perfect, I fully expect to eventually find out he’s a robot or an alien doing an all-too-good impersonation of a human life form - but hopefully that won’t happen until the end of season one at the earliest.

Stargate SG-1 - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for February 9, 2009:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update. It's color coded at Joe's blog to help maintain continuity.)

Stargate SG-1 season ten cast photo courtesy of GateWorld

February 9, 2009: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

So during SG-1’s final season, I came up with an outline for a time travel episode. And not your typical time-travel episode either. Building on a notion Paul [Mullie] once pitched out, I built a story on the idea of the team triggering an accident with the time-traveling puddle jumper (last scene in Good To Be King) which ends up landing them in three separate timelines: past, present, and future. As the story progresses, past events influence the present, shaping the future but both the present and future inevitably shape what has come before as well. Anyway, I had a lot of fun ideas of how the different timelines could affect each other and, rather than pitch it out verbally and risk confusing everyone, I decided to spell it all out in a color-coded outline ... that ended up confusing everyone. Hell, re-reading the thing today, there are elements that leave me confused. But, trust me - at the time, it all made perfect sense.

And so, today, I present to you a story idea that didn’t make the cut, in all of its detailed, multi-colored glory. If nothing else, consider it a fine example of a working outline. Or, better yet, consider it a fine example of a headache-inducing outline that, in the end, failed to win anyone over. Complex, yes. Confusing, you bet. But colorful like nobody’s business!

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT

An exclusive extract from an interview with David Hewlett (Rodney McKay), featuring in issue #26 of Stargate Magazine…

A brief excerpt of the extract:

Stargate Magazine: Let’s talk about The Shrine. What an amazing episode!
David Hewlett: It’s really good. It was obviously a very McKay-centric script, as I think they all should be! Having said that, Brad Wright is great at writing for everybody, all his scripts have really nice moments – I think the Ronon moment was really nice. There were some really good opportunities for the rest of the cast to get in on that whole losing McKay thing, which you would think would be a happy thing! Other than the video footage stuff, I didn’t have much to say. Poor Keller ended up doing all the exposition.

January 11, 2009: The 4 Best Stargate: Atlantis Episodes I Never Got to Write

Over the course of the series run, many an idea gets pitched out that never ends up seeing the soft blue light of a laptop screen. For whatever reason (production concerns, similarity to other stories, a failure to excite the other writers, the fact that your idea is shite,
etc.), that seemingly golden notion that got you all excited when it first popped into your head while shampooing that morning languishes and dies in the writers' room. Looking back, I've had more than my fair share of such pitches, story ideas I figured would be home runs that ended up being pop flies. The following are The Top 3 Atlantis Episodes I Never Got to Write…

... Thanks to everyone who weighed in with their happy Atlantis memories. Tomorrow is the deadline to get in those questions for Paul Mullie. Tomorrow also marks the beginning of discussion of On Basilisk Station. Let's hear your thoughts and start posting your questions for author David Weber who will be paying us a little visit.

Finally, check out the run-through of Atlantis's final scene (video embedded at the link above).

Stargate Atlantis - Watch 'Enemy at the Gate' and then ask writer Paul Mullie your questions!

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for January 7, 2009:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update.)

January 7, 2009: A Surprise Guest Blogger, Sugarless Day #4, and the Mailbag

Talk about signs of the apocalypse! First we had snow in Vegas. Then we had the New England Patriots fail to make the playoffs. And now, my writing and producing partner Paul Mullie has agreed to do a fan Q&A. This from a guy who has made it a point to shun all fan forums and Stargate-related internet chatter over his 9+ years with the franchise, in that time routinely avoiding interviews, viewer mail, and, whenever possible, walking by his office window whenever a fan demonstration was taking place outside. I'll be gathering questions for the Howard Hughes of the Stargate writing department (as he put it: "I'm coming down with Kleenex boxes on my feet and my jars of urine!") starting Friday night, right after the airing of the Atlantis season finale, Enemy at the Gate, which he wrote and produced.

Paul Mullie (photo courtesy of Joseph Mallozzi's blog)

Back in the office today, working on my SGU script. A little slow-going but I'm managing to maintain the snail's pace of one scene a day. By comparison, Carl [Binder] and Marty [Gero] have already delivered their first drafts. Rob [Cooper] and Brad [Wright] have almost completed episode #3. And Alan [McCullough] reports that he is well into the third act of his script. Paul [Mullie], thankfully, is only two pages into the outline of his episode.

More news on the casting front. We have our Scott and Stasiak! Official press release to come!

... Mailbag:

... Joebags writes: "So word on the street says SGU PTB have hired a 20 year old Canadian Idol reject as one of their stars." [Sebastian Pigott]
Answer: Really? I also heard that ground rhino horn increases your libido. Fascinating.

... Craig MD writes: "Regarding the Stargate: Universe casting, I don't remember seeing a "Scott" listed in the casting calls that were released (available on gateworld). Is this a new character or did Jared Nash get a name change?"
Answer: Scott is the new Nash. And green is the new red!

Stargate Atlantis - Alex Levine Blog Update - 'Enemy at the Gate'

From Alex Levine's SciFi.com blog update for January 6, 2009:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update.)

Not the End

... I sat down with Paul Mullie today, who wrote the finale for Atlantis, entitled "Enemy at the Gate". Paul told me that when the writers came up with this final episode, they didn't know at the time it would be the last episode. However, because it is also the 100th episode of the series, they had always wanted it to stand on its own, so the story wasn't planned as a cliff-hanger. As you probably all know, cliff-hangers are de rigueur for season ending episodes so the viewers will anticipate the beginning of the next season. Also, cliff hangers are a good way to deal with actors who are in the last season of their contracts; for example, you put all the characters in a big explosion, and if the studio can't come to terms on a new contract for some of them, well... I know it sounds harsh, but it would be even more harsh to you viewers to write a character off the show off-screen after the fact.

... By the way, this episode is dedicated to Don S. Davis, who recently passed away. Don played General Hammond on SG-1 for years. In addition to a dedication card at the end of the episode, the writers also honored Don's passing by writing into the episode the off-screen
passing of Don's character, General Hammond. It is a fitting tribute and done in a very classy way, as I'm sure you will agree when you see it ...

.. Thanks to you fans for five great years!

Stargate Magazine Issue 26

NEWS

Celebrating Stargate: Atlantis

The latest issue of The Official Stargate SG1/Atlantis Magazine is a 100-page special dedicated to Team Atlantis. We were taken aback by the news that season five would be the show’s last, but reaching 100 episodes is an outstanding achievement that's more than worthy of celebration. We spent the final week of shooting in Vancouver with the cast and crew – see below for more information about this issue’s exclusive report from the set.

The Best Bits

We’ve been privy to some of the remaining season five storylines, and know for sure that there are some of the show’s greatest moments are yet to come! Until they unfold, however, reminisce with us as we celebrate some of the show’s finest moments throughout the latest issue.

FEATURES

Set Report ‘08

In this issue, we bring you the first part of an exclusive report direct from the Vancouver set of Stargate: Atlantis. Here’s a taster: ‘Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett and Chris Heyerdahl [are] filming a scene for the penultimate episode of the season, Vegas. Written and directed by Rob Cooper, and subtitled CSI: Atlantis, the episode is something of a departure for the show. We stand in near total darkness while the scene is shot, and during a break in filming Joe and David both pop over to say hi, looking very dapper in their off-world garb. Not wanting to give too much away, of course, but keep an eye out for Vegas – you’ll never look at Sheppard in the same way!’

Cast Interviews

Our official affiliation with the Stargate: Atlantis cast and crew means we bring you an unrivalled line-up of cast interviews. In this issue, David Hewlett tells us about saying goodbye to his inner genius, we venture into Ronon’s trailer to talk dreadlocks, the dark side and the end of an era with Jason Momoa, we ask Joe Flanigan if we’ll ever get to the heart of John Sheppard, Rachel Lutrell talks Teyla, and Robert Picardo, the master and commander of many an expedition, tells us about his kissably large head, among other things!

Martin Gero

Stargate: Atlantis scribe, movie director, and Rodney McKay’s biggest fan – it can only be Martin Gero. Heading up this issue’s stellar line-up of interviews with the show’s talented creators, Gero talks about writing another season premiere and helming his first ever full episode, Brain Storm. Meanwhile, main unit director Andy Mikita talks about steering Stargate: Atlantis to some of its finest moments, and show-runners Joe Mallozzi and Paul Mullie take time out to help us digest the first half of season five.

"Dead and buried and turned to dust a long, long time ago, along with everyone you ever knew. There’s no way of knowing what the state of human civilization is - whether it even still exists." - McKay

No season of a television show ever runs completely smoothly - it’s a huge machine with many cogs, some of which are bound to need maintenance now and then - but Stargate: Atlantis’s fourth season held more challenges for the producers than most. For a start, co-creator Brad Wright, who had been running the show since its launch in 2004, had finally decided that he needed a break. It was well deserved - having also launched and run Stargate SG-1 way back in 1997, Wright had been working on the franchise for a decade.

Into his place stepped the writing team of Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. The pair had been part of the Stargate universe for a very long time, having first joined the SG-1 writing and producing team for that show’s fourth season. Since the two shows were produced side by side between 2004 and 2006, Mallozzi and Mullie were also intimately acquainted with the workings of Stargate: Atlantis, and their appointment as show runners made the transition run as smoothly as possible under the circumstances. In fact, they had been preparing for the role for some time.
"Every year Brad would say, ‘I’m exhausted, I can’t do this for another year,’" laughs Mallozzi, "and then he would come back for another year... And come back for another year!" "Finally he decided he didn’t want to do that any more," Mullie explains. "He was tired and he needed a break, and he wanted to do the Stargate SG-1 movies. And basically, we were just there. We were next in line, because we had been semi-show running Stargate SG-1. We had been running our own episodes, and about half the episodes with Robert [Cooper] ..."

Stargate: Universe - Joseph Mallozzi: Spinning Stargate: Universe!

At Joseph Mallozzi’s blog:

(Please follow all the links for the complete blog posts.)

Spinning Stargate: Universe - Day One

… We were all back in the office today, spinning stories for season one of Stargate: Universe. In attendance: creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, Carl Binder, Martin Gero, Alan McCullough, Paul Mullie, and myself. The first order of business was, of course, catching each other up on what we’ve been up to since last we met. I can’t help but think that if everyone on staff blogged as well, we’d be able to access all of this information before going into the office and could thereby dispense with the niceties of social interaction and get right to work. Easier said than done however. Paul’s Commodore 64 is not internet-capable and don’t get me started on Carl’s IBM Selectric, the Queen of electric typewriters.

Our second order of business was providing notes for episode #1. Brad and Rob did a terrific job of kicking things off in thrilling fashion. The script is fast-paced and fun; its characters unique and engaging. My favorite: Dr. David Rush. Oh, he’s going to be a handful. Originally planned as a two-parter, Brad and Robert quickly discovered that there was simply too much story for such a tight frame, so the series opener is now looking like a three-parter.

In addition to that first script, Brad and Rob provided us with a beat sheet and springboards for several more stories. Brad has laid claim to #4, a story that is right up his alley. Speaking of perfect pairings, I couldn’t think of anyone better than Carl Binder to write #5. Rob is eyeing #6 which offers a most intriguingly SF door in, while #7 and #8 have yet to be claimed.

As I mentioned in a previous entry, Stargate: Universe is a series that draws on established mythology yet blazes a bold, new path for the franchise. It’s definitely more character-centered and intimate in its exploration of the interpersonal dynamics that will drive a lot of the shipboard developments (and, no, I’m not talking about romance). The premise of this ship hurtling through uncharted territories offers up unbounded story possibilities, yet also forces us to adopt a very different approach toward alien encounters and planetary investigation. Twin themes mentioned over the course of today’s conversations: survival and sacrifice.

Prep-production is progressing nicely. Rob showed me about eight different designs for the Destiny. According to him, they’re getting close. No casting news to convey but some interesting names are being bandied about. The search continues. Finally, another element I’m loving is the SGU version of the SG-1/Atlantis MALP (Mobile Analytic Laboratory Probe). Very cool.

Tomorrow, we discuss Brad’s first story following the big three-part opener, establish some of the big picture storylines and arcs we’d like to pursue over the course of the show’s first 20 episodes, and then start breaking Carl’s story ...

Spinning Stargate: Universe Day Two

... Back in the office today. Brad and Rob were in a meeting this morning so Paul and I ended up discussing the outline for the SGA movie. He’ll be making a few changes to the structure and then, hopefully, put it out before week‘s end. Once the meeting wrapped, we convened in the writers’ room and talked big picture notions for the series, the big bang, our expanding universe, and the interesting repercussions of FTL travel on both contact parties involved in an instantaneous means of communication. Oh, and the post-production schedule is out. It looks like February 4th will be the first day of principal photography ...

Spinning Stargate: Universe Day #3

... Back at it today, spinning Stargate: Universe. With a first draft of episode #1 in hand and episodes #2-4 mapped out, we turned our attention to episode #5, Carl’s baby. After much heated debate on the motivating factors that “complicate things for our gang“, we ended up breaking the story in a little less than two hours …

We ended the day with a general discussion of SGU: some future storylines, a couple of surprises, yes there will be a mid-season two-parter, and the types of individuals who will make up the Destiny’s extended crew ...

Spinning Stargate: Universe Day #4

... With five stories in place, we turned our attention to episode #6 today, beating out Marty G.’s very first SGU script. This one involved a long, loooooong discussion on the workings of a certain technology which forms the impetus to another terrific character-driven story. Next week, we have stories to break for Rob, Alan, Paul, and myself after which we head off for two weeks of fun in the sun (or rising sun in my case). Then, we’re back in the office for one more week of discussion on the (hopefully) completed outline ...

Spinning Stargate: Universe Day #5

... Well, back in the office today. While Brad and Robert worked on revisions to the first script, the rest of us kept busy in our respective offices surfing the internet, phoning home, and making final preparations for our trip to Tokyo. At a little after 11:00, we convened in the writers’ room and started spinning Alan’s story. We broke for lunch, then resumed the discussion on shipboard justice and the ever-developing interrelations among the crew. Factions, fractions, and surprising revelations. By the time we called it a day, we had beaten out Alan’s story ...

Spinning Stargate: Universe Day #6

... Went into the office today and did the Whispers commentary with director Will Waring, after which the writers gathered to discuss one of Rob’s story ideas. It’s a great premise that, when I read it, left me wondering “How the hell is this going to work?” and, after much back and forth, we eventually came up with the logic construct to make it work (see Brad‘s whiteboard diagram for the explanation [photo at the site]) ...

Spinning Stargate: Universe Day #7

... Back on the office today for another day of SGU spinning. We skipped episode 9 (While I like the general premise and think it could be a lot of fun and, really, at the end of the day who doesn’t like fun?, I feel that, unlike the other stories we’ve discussed so far, this one is far more nebulous. Fearing we might well spend our final three days trying to spin a story out of this kernel of an idea, I suggested we move on to #10 and #11 which, at the very least, are somewhat more substantial in comparison) and moved on to the two-parter. I hesitate to call it a two-parter because, the way these episodes have developed so far, there are a threads that run through all the stories, in essence making this season one big 20-parter. Now given that some of you have started comparing SGU to existing shows on the basis of what little information has been released thus far, I thought it might be a good idea to help paint a clearer picture of the show. And so, to those of you looking for standing comparisons, I’d say more Lost than Battlestar, more Dr. Who than Heroes, more The Office than My Name Is Earl ...

Spinning Stargate: Universe Day #8

... Today was our final day of spinning on Stargate: Universe and we finished in impressive fashion, breaking not one but TWO stories. The first, episode #10 is mine (Carl is especially excited about this one) while #11 falls to Paul. Ticking clocks, twists and turns, alliances, betrayals, and a surprise guest! And, just like that, we have our first 10 stories in play. Now, all that remains to be done is to write the outlines, design and build the sets, design and create the costumes, design and produce the props, nail down the crew, cast the roles of Young, Rush, Scott, Eli, Tamara, Chloe, Stasiak, Wray, and Brody (among others), and everything else that needs to be done before we start shooting in early February. I have a feeling our visual effects department is going to have a blast with this show!

Easing Back into a Routine

... Well, back to work, but not back to the office. We were supposed to reconvene next week but, as expected, Brad and Robert are up to their eyeballs in scriptwriting and series prep so, instead, we’ll be flying solo, working on our own outlines and scripts. Rob showed me the stack of ship designs they were mulling over last time I was in and I suspect that he and Brad have probably narrowed their choice down by now.

So far, Martin, Carl, and Alan have put out outlines (and I’ve already provided notes on all three), and Rob and Brad have put out the first draft of the opening three-parter, Air, which puts me tied for last place with Paul (who, I’m assuming, is just about finished his pass on our outline for the SGA movie). Priority #1 now for me is hammering out an outline for the first part of the SGU mid-season two-parter. From what I understand, casting is still ongoing but I expect we’ll be hearing word on some decisions soon…soon ...

Stargate: Universe - Spinning Stargate: Universe - Day One

November 11, 2008: Spinning Stargate: Universe - Day One

We were all back in the office today, spinning stories for season one of Stargate: Universe. In attendance: creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, Carl Binder, Martin Gero, Alan McCullough, Paul Mullie, and myself. The first order of business was, of course, catching each other up on what we've been up to since last we met. I can't help but think that if everyone on staff blogged as well, we'd be able to access all of this information before going into the office and could thereby dispense with the niceties of social interaction and get right to work. Easier said than done however. Paul's Commodore 64 is not internet-capable and don't get me started on Carl's IBM Selectric, the Queen of electric typewriters.

Our second order of business was providing notes for episode #1. Brad and Rob did a terrific job of kicking things off in thrilling fashion. The script is fast-paced and fun; its characters unique and engaging. My favorite: Dr. David Rush. Oh, he's going to be a handful. Gary Jone getting in a few zzzzsss

L.A. is a go. Paul [Mullie] and I booked our flight and hotel this afternoon. We'll be flying out Sunday afternoon and getting in a little after 6:00 p.m., which should give us plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely dinner, unwind, and prep for three glorious days of meetings. Some time between now and then, our agent would like us to run through the pitches with them, I assume to ensure we don't make any egregious errors in the delivery ...

... Hey, as promised here are some behind-the-scene snaps from one of our upcoming episodes. Who does the car belong to and how the hell does it fit into the Pegasus-bound premise of our show? Hey, good question. I can't wait to find out myself.

Stargate Atlantis - Behind the Scenes Video Clip

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update October 6, 2008:

**snippage**

Went into the office today and watched the producer's cut of Enemy at the Gate. A fitting end to a terrific series, and one that'll segue nicely into the movie - which Paul [Mullie] and I continue to spin. To those of you asking, it will ideally include all the familiar faces - and then some.

Rob Cooper was back from the Vegas shoot looking very tired but very satisfied. What I've seen of the episode looks fantastic (a true big screen quality production) and I look forward to watching the finished product. Special Features Producer Ivon Bartok was also on location with them, and he came back with tons of behind-the-scenes footage. And speaking of behind-the-scenes footage, Lawren Bancroft-Wilson was on hand as well to snap some great pics of the shoot - great pics that he has promised to share along with a personal account of the Vegas adventure whenever he finds the time.

Speaking of finding the time - Brad was dropping none too subtle hints about his impending Q&A here on this blog. Essentially, he said that he'd waited so long for me to get around to it that, in the interim, he had to ask and answer his own questions. Well then, let's not let him wait any longer. If you have questions for Brad Wright, the creator and executive producer of Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and the forthcoming Stargate: Universe, let's see `em.

... Today's video: Way back in the early days of SG-1, any shot that showed the active gate was always a visual effect. Eventually, the production created a practical puddle that would obviate the need to call in the VFX team or re-use existing shots. The practical puddle has come a long way from its early, not-wholly-convincing, incarnation. Today, after much fine-tuning, it looks incredibly convincing - even when shot by a non-professional on his SONY handycam. Check it out at the [at the link above]...

Stargate Atlantis - MGM Studios: SciFi Channel Greenlights 2-HR Film

From MGM Studios:

SCI FI CHANNEL GREENLIGHTS 2-HOUR FILM FROM MGM BASED ON POPULAR `STARGATE ATLANTIS' SERIES

New York, NY – August 21, 2008 – Building upon the successful Stargate franchise, SCI FI Channel today announced it has greenlit a two-hour movie based on the hit science fiction adventure series Stargate Atlantis. SCI FI will have the exclusive worldwide television premiere of the yet to be titled Stargate Atlantis film, which will then be released on DVD by MGM. The movie will be written by Stargate Atlantis' executive producers Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, who also serve as series showrunners. The movie is set to follow the fifth and final season of Stargate Atlantis, as it draws to its thrilling conclusion in January 2009.

"We're excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original Stargate DTV movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise, " said Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and who both currently serve as executive producers on Atlantis.

"We share in the producers' enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format," said Thomas Vitale, Senior Vice President Programming & Original Movies.

Stargate Atlantis follows the adventures of an intrepid team of military and civilian explorers who travel the distant Pegasus galaxy by means of a Stargate, a portal created long ago by a highly advanced alien civilization called the Ancients. In their never-ending quest to seek out other technologies left behind by the Ancients, the Atlantis team encounters alien cultures – some friend, some foe.

The series will reach a milestone with the 100th episode airing in January 2009. Atlantis is executive produced by Brad Wright, Robert C. Cooper, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie, Carl Binder, and Martin Gero. Mallozzi and Mullie share the reins as showrunners.
