Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

Turn up the music and pop open the bubbly! This week we’re celebrating two years and 100 episodes of the GateWorld Podcast. Joining the party are three of our friends: Diana Botsford, author of the upcoming Stargate SG-1 novel “Four Dragons;” Michael Hinman, owner of Airlock Alpha; and our very own Tame Farrar, moderator at GateWorld Forum and a superstar in the making. There is lots to talk about, both Stargate and not, so don’t miss this very special show. And thanks to YOU for sticking with us and making the show a success.

We’re also making a very special announcement … Tune in to get the scoop on a brand new podcast in the GateWorld family, which launches right here next week!

It’s also our final show of the summer! David and Darren are taking a podcast vacation for a few weeks, but we’ll be back on Friday, September 24 to get ready for Season Two of Stargate Universe.

When is a Stargate like an airliner crash? How does Destiny mirror the island? In this week’s podcast we’re putting the Stargate franchise (and particularly SGU) up against one of our other favorite science fiction series, LOST! GateWorld’s Darren and David talk about SGU and character-centric storytelling, flashbacks, and inner conflict and external threats.

We’ll also give our take on the (somewhat controversial) LOST series finale, and why we found it so satisfying. (If you haven’t seen the end of LOST yet, do beware of spoilers.)

(For our previous “Versus” shows, check out Stargate vs. Star Trek and Stargate vs. Battlestar Galactica!)

We’re taking the week off next week as David heads to Vancouver for Gatecon! We’ll see you in two weeks for the first of our final three shows of the summer.

The GateWorld Podcast goes back to the past in this week’s show, taking a look at the Stargate SG-1 Season Four episode “2010″ and the way the first decade of the century had played out in that alternate timeline. But wait! Now it is 2010 … so how does the past decade really compare, within the Stargate universe?

We’ll talk about the friends we lost, public knowledge of the Stargate, the stability and technology provided by the Aschen, President Kinsey, and more. And we’ll ask listeners if you think we are better off now than we were before SG-1 changed the timeline.

The freshman season of Stargate Universe is complete! In this week’s podcast, GateWorld’s Darren and David will look at the first year of SGU as a whole and discuss what we thought worked. How did the second half of the season compare to the first half? Character drama, alien threats, separation from home, communication stones, and more — it’s all on the table as we dissect Season One and decide if it lived up to our own expectations.

But first, we’ll also be talking about the news of writer-producer Robert C. Cooper’s departure from Stargate.

If you are a fan of Doctor Who, stick around after the show for a bonus discussion! Darren has picked three episodes for David to watch, and this week David will give us his newbie take on the show and whether he’s been convinced to keep watching.

This week on the show we’re talking about “Lost,” last week’s brand new episode of Stargate Universe! This one had a really cool premise with lots of great character bits, visual effects, technical explanations about how the Stargate networks work, and plenty of suspenseful hopping through the gates. We’ll talk about the escape from the caves, Ronald Greer’s backstory, hyperspace vs. F.T.L. travel, Lt. Scott’s leadership, and a very surprising ending. Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

This week on the show David and Darren are, of course, talking about last Friday’s new episode of Stargate Universe! “Human” gave us a compelling look at Dr. Nicholas Rush’s past and his inner psyche. It also showed us just how far he’s willing to go to crack Destiny’s code. We’ll talk about Rush’s response to reliving his wife’s illness, the Lucian Alliance, and a return from Dr. Daniel Jackson (guest star Michael Shanks). We’ll also talk about the civilization discovered by the team in the B-story, and speculate a little on how the big cliffhanger might be resolved. And we’ll find out what podcast listeners thought of the episode!

But first: GateWorld’s own Chad Colvin pays us a visit to debrief on the Vancouver Stargate Convention, hosted by Creation Entertainment. While Darren and David had to stay home this year, Chad was hoppin’ busy covering all the stage panels, hosting GateWorld’s annual dinner (thanks to Propworx for donating the one-of-a-kind give-aways, plus Sci-Fried Band for more goodies), and interviewing nearly a dozen actors from SG-1, SGA, and SGU. Tune in to hear about Chad’s week, and watch the site for those interviews plus more from the Vancouver event.

This week on the podcast we welcome back Justin Nolan from The 5th Race Podcast, sitting in for David, who is on convention duty. Justin and Darren discuss the ins and outs of “Faith,” last week’s new episode of Stargate Universe! We’ll talk about T.J.’s “happy” news and what that storyline might hold for the future, the downside of life on Destiny, civilian-military relations, and those super-advanced aliens we have yet to meet. We’ll also theorize on planet-making and just what that obelisk is. And we’ll hear what other fans thought of “Faith!”

We’ll also talk about Syfy’s decision to move Stargate Universe and its other Friday night dramas to Tuesdays, starting this fall (story).

Stargate Universe picks up right where the last episode left off with "Divided," a tense episode in which the conflicts on board Destiny finally boil over. On this week's podcast Darren and David talk about the episode from top to bottom, including the return of the aliens, the coup d'etat on the Destiny, and whether we ought to be rooting for the military or the civilians in this conflict. We'll also discuss the way we think those communication stones might work.

Stargate Universe has returned with a vengeance, offering up a mid-season premiere with action, effects … and aliens! Darren and David talk about “Space” in this week’s installment of the GateWorld Podcast, from the very alien aliens to Rush’s return, from the strength of our shields to Chloe’s new-found inquisitiveness. We’ll also analyze the way we think the communication stones work, versus how they’ve been shown in Stargate’s past. Tune in to find out why we think “Space” is SGU’s best yet.

Before the main discussion we’ll also talk about what’s up at GateWorld, particularly last week’s editor’s column and the response it has received.

Stargate Universe - GateWorld: Podcast #82 - SGU's Anti-Heroes

At GateWorld:

GateWorld Podcast: SGU’s Anti-Heroes

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

The heroes of the Stargate universe have done some “damned distasteful things” over the years, often walking the moral line … and sometimes crossing it. In Stargate Universe, however, the writers’ goal was to avoid the heroic archetypes and create characters who are all varying shades of grey. But can we as viewers still love these characters and engage in their stories? We can relate to their imperfections … but can we look up to them?

In this week’s episode of the podcast GateWorld’s Darren and David talk about the “anti-heroes” of SGU, and the capacity of such true-to-life characters for real heroism. If you haven’t seen the show yet, beware of spoilers through the end of “Justice,” the mid-season finale that aired in December.

Ten episodes later, and we’ve reached the mid-season finale of Stargate Universe! This week on the podcast we’ll talk about “Justice,” with Justin Nolan from The 5th Race Podcast sitting in for David (who is on assignment). Darren and Justin will talk about how “Justice” starts to pay off the show’s slow build, law on board the Destiny and the ship’s growing culture of military versus civilian, and who sat in the Ancient chair … and why. And how about that cliffhanger ending — with a jaw-dropping conclusion to the first half of the season, yet a very unheroic action for one of our “heroes.”

We’ll also make some predictions about how the story will be resolved when SGU returns next spring. In the Quibbles segment, we’ll discuss Eli’s discovery of the gun, Franklin’s fate, and more. And we’ll also find out what listeners think about the mid-season finale.

We’re taking the GateWorld Podcast to a higher plane of existence (or just a really esoteric topic) this week, as Darren and David discuss the concept of ascension in Stargate and science fiction.
