From Academy Award-winning writer Christopher McQuarrie and executive producers Heather McQuarrie and Remi Aubuchon, Persons Unknown is NBC’s one-hour mystery drama, in which a group of seven strangers must come together to solve the puzzle of their lives.

All of them have been taken from their families and have arrived in a deserted town with no recollection of how they got there, and they must rely on each other to get out. While being held hostage, the strangers are constantly watched by security cameras with no idea who or what is behind them, and every attempt to leave is thwarted by unforeseen circumstances. At every turn, these strangers are threatened physically, psychologically and emotionally.

Showrunner Remi Aubuchon recently talked exclusively to Collider about developing the 13-episode series, figuring out how to gradually reveal the show’s mysteries to viewers and what he loves about the sci-fi/mystery genre. He also promises that fans will be freaked out by the end and that they’ll never see it coming.

... What is your involvement with “Stargate Universe”? Are you on that as a writer?

Remi: I’m on it as a writer and a consulting producer. I’ve always liked that show, and I was happy that they were looking for an extra person. It seemed like a good match. I’m having a blast.

... As a producer and a writer, how much can you take on at one time, before you start to feel overwhelmed?

Remi: I have found that I can definitely do two things at once. If I can schedule them properly, I can even try to squeeze in three. After that, I’m gone. I once had a year where I was writing two pilot scripts, working on a show and supervising another writer doing a pilot, and I was afraid, during the whole time, that I was going to piss someone off, and I ended up actually really making myself crazy and mad.

So, I’ve decided that my ideal is two things at once. With that, I’m pretty happy. I’m working on “Stargate Universe” and I do have two pilots that I’m writing for next year, but I’ve told everybody that I have to spread them out. I’ll be done with “Stargate Universe” in October, and I’ll be delivering one pilot script by the end of the year, and then another script by the first of the year. That’s how I’ve done it.

I’ve also been doing this for awhile now. Early in my career, I was just afraid that no one would hire me again, so I wanted to do whatever it was that was brought before me. Now, I’m a little more discerning and want to do things well, one at a time. That’s easier for me.

... Question: I have a kvetch about the Syfy network's current nightly programming. I keep tuning to Syfy hoping to see fairly new episodes of current hits like Eureka or classic episodes of Battlestar, but instead huge blocks of Syfy's schedule are dominated by gross-out horror films or, worse, cheap CGI horror. Syfy relegates syndicated cult faves like The X-Files and Star Trek to sporadic daytime blocks, while their nightly programming relies on bad horror films. I don't equate science fiction with backpackers getting mauled by Dinosharks and Octospiders, and I'd much rather see classic X-Files than another bad monster movie filmed in the Ukraine. 

New Syfy shows like Caprica and Warehouse 13 could benefit from repeat primetime airings, but Syfy's programmers are more apt to reach for severed arms and flying piranhas than repeats of Stargate Universe. Do you have any insight on why Syfy has been so parsimonious with its own critically acclaimed shows in favor of schlocky horror flicks? Why is Syfy robbing their new shows of much needed primetime exposure?—Stephanie

Matt Roush: I admit I don't pay a great deal of attention to channels like Syfy except on the nights when it airs original series I may be inclined to watch (like Warehouse 13, which premieres a new season this Tuesday, and Fridays, where Eureka will be returning alongside the unfortunate Haven). You make a good point that it would behoove Syfy (or at least enhance its reputation) by giving its signature shows more of a spotlight throughout the week (and months of hiatus), but clearly the programmers have found the mix of sensational reality and Z-grade horror flicks to suit their business needs. Otherwise, why go there? Could also be a licensing issue with some shows that limit the number of times they can be repeated, but where the classics like X-Files are concerned, it's also possible that they've exhausted much of their shelf life for now. At least where the bottom line is concerned.

In an exclusive interview in the new SFX (out next Wednesday), actress Alaina Huffman, who plays First Lieutenant Tamara "TJ" Johansen in the latest Stargate spin-off, Universe, reveals how she felt that she was in a similar position to her character – initially overwhelmed by the situation she found herself in. Especially as regards the negative reactions to the show and her character from some corners of the Stargate fanbase.

"I think initially some of us paid a little too much attention to the blogs and the fanbase," she says. "We had to learn for ourselves not to listen to that because it can be really horrible. They can be really mean. But people are entitled to their opinions… I thought it was a positive that these characters are growing and developing. I know it is different from the Stargate brand, since we are all not sure of ourselves, but I think it's more representative of the truth, to be quite honest. I think all of us in life are in a position to grow and it can be overwhelming. As a person I am starting this new show with a huge fanbase and it's got its grip on the world. I can definitely relate to TJ. She goes into it saying, `I know I can do it and I know I am good at what I do but this is really overwhelming.' I don't think that takes away from her strength at all. I think in fact all of the bones are there but she just has to muscle up and that's representative of all the characters."

Network’s programming shakeups deliver the ‘SmackDown’ to sci-fi fans

Presumably fulfilling its post-rebranding promise to “Imagine Greater,” the former Sci Fi Channel — now known as Syfy — has imagined its way right out of the niche that made the cable network.

Forget about space operas, tech dramas or B-movie monsters (except for “Mega Piranha” — never forget “Mega Piranha”), programming shake-ups reveal Syfy is ready to live up to its theme-less new name. If the recent announcement that “Top Chef” alum Marcel Vigneron would be joining the network for a cooking show called “Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen” wasn’t proof enough, Syfy’s acquisition of “Friday Night SmackDown” should be.

Not that Syfy really wants anyone catching on to that fact. Much like shoehorning the word “quantum” into the title of Vigneron’s upcoming gastronomic offering acts as a symbolic nod to traditional viewers, Syfy’s president, David Howe, hopes he can even convince fans that wrestling somehow fits the old and largely abandoned genre, too.

After all, World Wrestling Entertainment’s “SmackDown” marks “the ultimate in imagination-based sports entertainment,” according to Howe.

Heh. Nice try...


... Yes, like it or not, all those shows now occupying prime-time nerd night, what was once the beloved “Battlestar Galactica’s” place of honor, will shuffle off to Tuesday to make room for the new two-hour block of bikini-clad men. “Stargate Universe,” “Sanctuary” and “Battlestar Galactica” prequel “Caprica” — some of Syfy’s best current content to make a date-free Friday night seem worthwhile — must simply make way for the guys with the big guns...

[NOTE: In October 2010, Stargate Universe's season two, Sanctuary's season three and the last half of Caprica's first season will premiere on Syfy (S).]

'SmackDown' entering the Syfy ring



World Wrestling Entertainment is moving its Friday Night SmackDown series to cable: Syfy will air the series starting Oct. 1 because its current home, MyNetworkTV, decided to end its contract. Syfy also is moving original series such as Stargate Universe, Sanctuary and Caprica from Fridays to Tuesdays, when viewing levels are higher, and in turn will drop WWE's new NXT series, now being shopped to other cable outlets. SmackDown, a top Friday draw among young men, premiered in 1999 on UPN; Syfy sibling USA airs WWE's Raw.

The Parsec Nominated SciFiPulse Radio continues its ongoing mission to boldly go where no podcast has gone before and for our next show, we bring forth a howlingly fun interview with Ryan Robbins, who among other things is best known for his role of Henry Foss in the hit Syfy Series Sanctuary.

During the course of our 30 minute interview with the actor. He talks about how Henry is vastly different from the darker and more sinister roles that he’s played on other shows, and also shares his thoughts about Sanctuary’s newest character Kate Freelander, and reveals how he sympathizes with Agam Darshi because of the tough job she had coming to the show so late.

The actor also touches on the role that folks will see him play in the new series Caprica, which started its run on Syfy Channel last weekend, although he was only able to reveal so much.

He says that it is a “complex role” that fans will enjoy.
