Exclusive: Robin Dunne Has Found His 'Sanctuary'

The Syfy series is out on Blu-ray and we chat to one of the stars

By Michael Simpson | Friday, June 18, 2010

Photobucket

Given that Sanctuary is filmed on an ultra-high definition camera, the Vancouver-shot fantasy series seems tailor-made for Blu-ray. It was surprising last year, then, when the First Season came to the home entertainment market only on DVD. Thankfully that has been rectified this week with the release of both Seasons One and Two on BD. Cinema Spy has a full review of those coming up. In the meantime we are marking the occasion with an interview with one of the show's stars, Robin Dunne.

Dunne plays Will Zimmerman, assistant and protégé to monster hunter Dr Helen Magnus (played by Stargate's Amanda Tapping). Magnus runs the sanctuary of the show's title. The unnaturally old but beautiful scientist uses the sanctuary to study and provide a safe have for so-called abnormals. These are mutant beings who might be seen as threatening by 'normal' humanity.

Sanctuary started life as a short Web series. It was popular enough to be picked up by a collection of broadcasters in various countries, including Syfy in the United States and The Movie Network/Movie Central in Canada (later moving to the SPACE Channel). In our chat Dunne discussed what it's like to have been there from the beginning, his character's evolution through the Web series and both seasons that have aired so far (a third is now in production) and why he thinks he has the best job in the world.

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

CinemaSpy: What are the highlights for Will Zimmerman in Season Two?
Robin Dunne: The two-hour opening is really amazing. We ended on a serious cliffhanger on Season One and that just gets a hell of a lot harder and the stakes just skyrocket. From the get-go Season Two is just a major rollercoaster ride. We do have some amazing episodes. We have a couple of two-handers this season, which are a lot of fun. Amanda Tapping has directed an episode, which is a wonderful episode, and it was a really big treat to work with her as an actor and director. There's nothing that she can't do. Also, stylistically we've done some different stuff [in Season Two]. The shows now look a little different. The scope of the show's going to get a little bigger. And I think because of the stylistic changes the audience is going to get even more of a peek into the show and to see what all the characters are going through all the time. I think definitely it's going to blow your mind.

Sanctuary - Ottawa Citizen: Sci-fi show finds Sanctuary in Vancouver

At the Ottawa Citizen (Canada):

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

Sci-fi show finds Sanctuary in Vancouver

By Katherine Monk, Canwest News Service June 11, 2010

VANCOUVER - Ian Tracey's face is black, blue and bloody, but he's not getting any love from a stone-faced Amanda Tapping. Dressed in black leathers and knee-high boots, the veteran actor is getting tough with this alien brand of Cybil - an "abnormal" with multiple personalities - because, well, the survival of humanity depends on it.

Welcome to the Vancouver set of Sanctuary - "the little show that could."

A special-effects and character-driven series recently picked up for its third season by Canadian and US networks, Sanctuary is just the latest Sci-Fi skein to call Vancouver home - carrying on a legacy forged nearly 20 years ago with the birth of X-Files and the eventual installation of the Stargate spin-off family.

... Sanctuary airs in Canada on Space, and in the US on SyFy. Sanctuary Season 2 is available on DVD June 15.

Stargate Universe - Space Channel: InnerSpace - David Blue Audio Interview

At Canada's Space Channel's InnerSpace:

An Interview with David Blue from Stargate Universe

Pix Princss | 12/1/2009

Hey SGU fans! Last week I asked you to post some q's for David Blue, who plays everyone’s fave boy genius, Eli, on Stargate Universe. He answered a whole bunch of your fan questions, including W-T-F was up with that shuttle at the end of Air Pt. 3?

So listen or download the podcast HERE. I began by asking David what he misses most about being on set, and he gushed about the amazing SGU family that formed during the filming in Vancouver.

He also talks about how he is different from Eli, and his ideas for the show (which include going to Planet Gap where he can get some new clothes). David super-sensitive to spoilers, but he gives some great insight as to where the story is heading without ruining it for the purists ;)

I had a blast talking with him. Hope you enjoy giving it a listen!

Sanctuary at SPACE

Pix Princss | 11/19/2009

Small disclosure: I have a total girl-crush on Amanda Tapping. Not only is she foxy and smart, but she lives and breathes sci-fi. As any one who's met her can tell you is as lovely as she seems. I kind of want her to be my big sister, but I was too shy to ask. She visited us at SPACE yesterday with her partners in crime, Sanctuary co-Creators Damian Kindler and Martin Wood. It was kind of hard to concentrate, and as you can probably tell by the frequency of the Facebook and Twitter updates, it was all kinds of awesome.

... Amanda is going to host tonight's episode of InnerSPACE tonight, discussing Eureka and the upcoming episode of Sanctuary, which she directed. Very cool!

And before I forget, the three Sanctuary creators have given us three signed scripts of 'End of Nights Pt. 1' to put into a contest! So enter now for this great chance to win some excellent Sanctuary legacy material.'

A brief excerpt from the rules:

To enter and to be eligible to win, entrant must be a legal resident of Canada (excluding Quebec) and be thirteen (13) years of age or older.

Stargate Universe - - Space Channel: Elyse Levesque Audio Interview

At Canada's Space Channel's InnerSpace:

Interview with Elyse Levesque from SGU

Pix Princss | 11/13/2009

Hey SGU fans! InnerSpace spoke with Elyse Levesque (Chloe Armstrong) and she was a total doll. She answered some of our fan questions, told us all about kicking the crap out of Robert Carlyle, and revealed what makes one of her favourite episodes, "Time" (which airs tonight at 10ET/7PT) so great. LISTEN to her interview HERE!

Tonight on Stargate Universe:

An away team finds a kino beside a Stargate on a jungle world, which contains video footage of the team that was shot prior to their arrival. Then, an illness cripples the team, forcing them to quarantine themselves on the planet.

Join us after the show for InnerSPACE, where we take the time to get into this storyline and we investigate some possible theories, posing a question for you, the viewer: What happened to the crew of the Destiny at the end of “Time”? Is this an alternate universe or a time loop?

Stargate Universe - Innerspace: Alaina Huffman Audio Interview

At Canada's Space Channel's Innerspace:

InnerSpace recently spoke Alaina Huffman who plays Lt. Tamara “TJ” Johansen on Stargate Universe from her home in L.A. She is one smart lady and had tons of great stories on the show and the SGU family she's worked with in Vancouver. Listen to the interview here.

Thanks for all the fan questions, everyone! I had a chance to bring Alaina your Q’s on her favourite episode (@CraigRMacDonald, Twitter), whom she’d like to inhabit with the communication stones (@Andew James Scott, Facebook), and Whether she’ll appear again on Smallville in the role of Black Canary (@Ron Graham, Facebook).

Alaina also gave a great response to those who crave stronger actions from the female characters. Now go give it a listen and watch Alaina’s favourite episode of Season 1, Time, this Friday at 10ET/7PT.

Stargate Universe - Space Channel - Jamil Walker Smith Audio Interview

At Canada's Space Channel:

Interview with Jamil Walker-Smith from SGU

Pix Princss | 11/6/2009

Hey all, I have put up the podcast interview with Jamil Walker-Smith who plays Sgt. Ronald Greer on Stargate Universe. We talked about hugging in space suits, on Sgt. Greer’s issue with Dr. Rush, on Robert Carlyle’s lectures on Scotland, and where how he want his character to evolve. Listen Here!

In the interest of full disclosure, this was the first audio interview I’ve edited, so be warned it’s gonna have a few hiccups throughout.

Jamil was hilarious. I had to edit out the part where he promises to take us out partying in Vancouver, but here’s hoping he makes it to the SPACE HQ for a cameo on InnerSPACE!

Sadly, he wouldn’t divulge any crazy dish for us on the show, but he did want us to leave you with this Bjork video, which reminds him of hugging it out in a space suit.

Stargate Universe airs Fridays at 10ET/7PT on SPACE. Canadians can view it in a 7-day catchup window on http://watch.spacecast.com/ after the broadcast.

New Installment of Fan Franchise Favorite Scores Impressive Ratings in U.S., UK, Australia and Canada, While Attracting a Whole New Generation of Young Fans

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Edgier in tone and sporting a versatile and high profile cast, MGM's hour-long, sci-fi series Stargate Universe (SGU) is on the fast track to becoming the most successful installment in Stargate franchise history. Reporting impressive debuts in the U.S., the UK, Canada and Australia, SGU is attracting a large number of younger viewers and proving that a new generation of fans is embracing the next era of Stargate.
"With this success, SGU continues to be a very important franchise in the MGM family along with James Bond, Pink Panther, The Hobbit and Rocky," said Gary Marenzi, Co-President, MGM Worldwide Television. "We anticipate global success for the series as SGU continues its roll out around the world and we are thrilled that younger audiences worldwide are discovering and embracing our very addictive series."

"Many of our characters are younger, inexperienced and should not be on this mission," added Brad Wright, co-creator of SGU. "This opens the door to relationships and storylines that younger audiences want to see."

SGU debuted in the U.S. on Syfy to the best franchise premiere performance in four years, drawing more than 2.3 million viewers. The series grabbed 2.35 million total viewers with 1.32 million Adults 25-54, and 1.12 million Adults 18-49 during its two-hour debut.

In Canada, SGU premiered on SPACE with a record breaking audience of 565,000 making it SPACE's highest rated single episode ever. SGU was the #1 non-sports specialty program of the day for Adults 25-54 and A18-49. SPACE is the Canadian English language cable television specialty channel owned and operated by CTVglobemedia.

Launching on Sky1 in the UK, SGU delivered 1,042,000 viewers for episode one and 961,000 for episode two, earning the series the biggest "Stargate" audience in almost five years.

In Australia, SGU was the best performing show on the Sci-Fi pay television platform, posting a 6.4% share. This performance represented an increase of 411% in the time slot (Fridays 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.) versus the previous programming of the last four weeks. SGU is well on its way of being one of the highest rated shows for the week on pay television in Australia...

Sanctuary Goes International, Preps Season Two

Thursday March 5, 2009

Toronto-based producer and distributor Tricon Films & Television has signed a series of major international deals for the series SANCTUARY, whilst at the same time preparing for production on season two. The show was recently commissioned for a second season by Sci Fi Channel in the U.S. and by the Space channel in Canada.

Tricon has pre-sold SANCTUARY to ITV4 in the U.K., which also had success with season one, and has inked a major deal for seasons one and two with E1 Ent. for distribution of worldwide home video. Season one has been sold to TV3 Russia and NRJ 12 in France. AXN has also snapped up the series for Central Europe, while Sci Fi will air the series internationally in Asia, Australia and Europe ...
