Robert Cooper, the writer and director of Stargate Atlantis' penultimate episode, `Vegas', reveals the hard work that went into the show's most ambitious location shoot yet!
... You only had two days to shoot in the city?
RCC: "Yes. We just couldn't afford more. It was almost prohibitively expensive as it was. We got permission to break the bank, but only to a certain extent. We certainly could have done more down there¬ – the script called for three or four more days of Vegas – but we made it work in certain parts of Vancouver. There was the motel that we found that felt a little Vegas-y. We also went out into the interior of DC, into the Okanagan, and there's a little patch of desert out there. So our crew drove three hours from Vancouver and we all stayed in wine country to shoot for the three days in a town called Osoyoos. That was fun, it was like a road trip!"

Allow me to start off today's entry with some exciting news - before, of course, seguing right back into the tedious offerings that typify this blog. Executive Producer/Writer/Co-Creator Robert Cooper has agreed to come by an field your questions about his piece de resistance, his chef d'oeuvre, his hors d'oeuvre and Atlantis swansong: Vegas. Yep, gather up all your queries regarding alternate universe theory and nippleless wraith and start posting because, very soon, ALL WILL BE REVEALED!

Today, besides working out and eating right, I watched some playoff football, shoveled snow/ice, worked on my SGU script, and had a conversation with Paul about the new look writing department. With regard to the latter - bittersweet developments abound. More on this

Joe Mallozzi Answers: Not sure why there would be. There was never any indication that, out of the myriad alternate universes out there, we landed in that particular one especially since this version of Rodney was nothing like Rod.

TUNE IN TONIGHT: On 'Stargate,' a murderer runs amok in Sin City

"Stargate Atlantis" (9 p.m., Sci Fi, TV-14) enters it second-to-last hour with a tale of a vicious killer run amok in America's gambling Mecca. The slogan "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," never seemed more apt.
After a series of brutal murders that leave the victims desiccated husks, Detective John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) is at his wits' end.
Those wits get twisted further after he's taken to Area 51, where he gets a tutorial in the real source of the killings - a renegade Wraith who crash-landed on Earth and who has since gone on a killing spree (for energy).
He's also plying the poker tables of Las Vegas to earn the money to concoct a device capable of phoning home to the Pegasus Galaxy, a toll call with ominous implications for the planet.
For casual fans of the show and of sci-fi in general, the hour's highlight has to be moment when the Wraith, disguised as a deranged punk biker, insinuates himself into a mobster's poker game, featuring "Sopranos" stars Steve Schirripa and Frank Vincent.
Filled with menace and dry humor, the scene makes you wonder if there is a future in a "Mafia vs. the Aliens" movie genre.

Vegas, baby, Vegas
So by now you've probably heard that some of this week's episode entitled "Vegas" was actually shot in Vegas. Rob Cooper wrote and directed this one, and sometime in August he said to me, "You know, we're probably going to need someone to come down to Vegas just to deal with legal clearances." And of course that's my job! So I said to Rob, "Well great. I'll be there." But there was just a pause on the other end of the line and then a chuckle. "You're just messin' with me, aren't you?" And he was. But truth be told, there wasn't a lot of time to party and gamble because they were too busy working. That is, until the shoot was finished. Then, and only then, they gambled and golfed. And a little bit before the shoot too.
Even though I wasn't invited along for the ride, I was one of the people responsible for getting Planet Hollywood involved. That's the casino that allowed us to shoot on their premises and do our chase scene on the roof. We asked a number of casinos if they were
interested in having us shoot there, but but only a handful of casinos even responded. I guess they're too busy raking in the cashola to worry about a little extra publicity. Other than the Planet Hollywood, I understand the Riviera was interested, and a couple others (New York, New York and Treasure Island) were considering letting us shoot their exteriors. At the time of our preproduction, the film "21" came out on DVD and Rob and I watched it, wondering where all the casinos were that were featured in the film. As you might expect, it was the ones I mentioned - Planet Hollywood and the Riviera. The Hard Rock did allow them to shoot there, but I think it might have only been the exterior ...
