Cult Alert: Battlestar finale

Before screening tonight’s tremendously satisfying, super-sized, overstuffed Battlestar Galactica finale (9/8c, Sci Fi) to a select audience earlier this week, executive producer/writer Ron Moore made everyone in the theater raise their hand and take a solemn (well, kinda) pledge not to reveal anything that happens in these last eventful two hours.

No problem. I’d sooner be blown out of an airlock than spoil how things end for these tormented space warriors and the marvelous old dying old ship that’s carrying them to their destiny. Suffice it to say that the finale is a fabulous payoff in every way imaginable. And then some. And then some more. (Therein lies the problem.) In my row alone, there were outbreaks of gasps, laughs, cheers and tears before it was all over.

The best news: The battle scenes are genuinely spectacular, as Galactica’s volunteer crew of humans and Cylons takes on one last mission against Cavil’s rebel Cylon forces: the rescue of human/Cylon hybrid child Hera. The action is thrilling, and the most pivotal twist in the ultimate showdown is as surprising as it is cathartic ...

In a landmark event that showcased just how relevant a TV program can be, Battlestar Galactica was the prime topic of discussion at the United Nations Tuesday night in New York.

The biggest names behind Battlestar Galactica—stars Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell and executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick—sat on a panel in the Economic and Social Council Chamber with UN representatives to explore what the show had to say about world issues over its four-season run. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg led the panel through two hours of discussion that touched on race relations, terrorism, gender equality and a host of other issues ...

Battlestar Galactica cast member Kate Vernon (Ellen Tigh) talked with SCI FI Wire exclusively about the show and what role she may play in the series' final episodes in advance of [Friday's] installment, "No Exit." Click on the jump to read the full interview, but beware: There are big, massive spoilers ahead!

Vernon said that Ellen Tigh comes to "a place of peace and understanding" in her final moments. But she wouldn't reveal when or how Ellen—recently acknowledged to be the fifth and final Cylon—reaches those final moments.

A brief excerpt:

What did you hear from the fans after the revelation that Ellen was the fifth Cylon?

Vernon: Oh, it's mixed. The reaction was a big reaction, but a very, very mixed reaction. And that's exactly what I was expecting. Some people were sure I was the Cylon. Some people can't believe I'm the fifth Cylon. All I can say is that's probably exactly how [executive producer] Ron Moore wanted the audience to react. Ron and [executive producer] David Eick have their reasons for bringing me back and for creating this absolute that I'm the fifth Cylon, and it has to do with the relationship Ellen has with Saul [Michael Hogan]. It's one of the oldest relationships in the universe. It's the oldest marriage going. And the revelation brings a lot of meaning to the relationship and the dynamic. So much is going to be revealed in the [upcoming] episodes that I think people are going to be fulfilled. You can't satisfy everybody. There will be fans angry forever about this, but c'est la vie. That's good writing. That's good TV.

How sci-fi saga made it to liftoff

Couldn't have happened without Vancouver crew, creator says

Battlestar Galactica -- a sci-fi saga set in an entirely reconstructed time and universe -- was an intricate, at times ludicrously complicated TV series to make during its four seasons of existence.

Ronald D. Moore, the critically acclaimed program's creator and senior executive producer, minces no words, though, in heaping praise on Battlestar Galactica's home base of Vancouver.

To put it bluntly, Moore says, the show would not have been possible without either the city or its hard-working crew, many of whom were drawn from the city's still-thriving homegrown production community -- thriving despite economic turmoil in the financial industry and until recently a fast-rising Canadian dollar.

Battlestar Galactica's B.C.-based crew included veteran set designer Richard Hudolin, who first came to prominence as the Gemini-winning production designer of the long-running sci-fi series Stargate SG-1, as well as the pilot episode of Showtime's Dead Like Me.

"The crew makes the show, no ifs, ands or buts," Moore said.

"And I think my crew in Vancouver felt a tremendous sense of ownership."

... Battlestar Galactica airs Fridays on Space at 7 p.m., beginning Jan. 16. An official premiere date for Caprica has yet to be decided.

Star Trek veteran and Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore discusses religion, revelations and resolutions in the series' final season, which begins January 16.

A brief excerpt:

Q: The build-up to the final Cylon has been unprecedented. How is the revelation not going to be a letdown?

A: It will never be as powerful as the build-up. I resigned myself to that a long time ago. The "Who Shot JR" of it all is an instructive lesson: No matter who it is, it's still going to be a bit of a letdown. But I decided that precisely because of that, it wasn't going to be in the final episode. I didn't want that to become the entire series. I'm sure there will be a variety of reactions. Some people will love it, some people will hate it. But I think when you see how the revelation fits into the overall mythology of the show, when all the questions are answered by the end, then it'll make sense and you'll think, "Oh, well it kind of had to be that person."
