David Blue Geeks Out On Stargate Universe

By Jeffrey Renaud

David Blue as Eli Wallace from Stargate Universe's 'Lost.'

With scene-stealing roles in shows like Ugly Betty and Moonlight to his credit, David Blue went where no man had gone before for his dream gig as Math Boy Eli Wallace on Syfy’s Stargate Universe. Okay, MacGyver and Alan Shore have been through the Stargate as well, but you get the point.

An MIT dropout, Eli Wallace is brilliant but lacks the drive to get him anywhere fast. That all changes when he solves a math problem embedded in a video game and finds himself working alongside Machiavellian mastermind Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle) aboard the Destiny in a galaxy far, far away.

Blue is no math slouch himself: He was a calculus major in college before switching to theater arts. SpinOff Online spoke to Blue about his role on Syfy’s hit franchise, and he also shared his thoughts on the final five hours of Lost, particle acceleration and what Lieutenant Scott’s must-play video game is.

A brief excerpt:

Eli’s a gamer and actually landed his spot on Destiny after solving a math problem embedded in a video game. Are you much of a gamer yourself?
DB: "Yeah, but it gets harder the more I work. I’m lucky that I’ve been lucky in my career. And the more I work, the less time I have for games. But I do own an Xbox 360, a PlayStation, a Wii, a Super Nintendo, a Nintendo and a PC.

My favorite games used to always be RPGs. I love first-person shooters. I never really got into Madden and all that, but I played it with friends.

It’s funny because Brian J. Smith, who plays Lieutenant Scott, keeps telling me that I need to buy certain games. I don’t know how he finds the time to play games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2. He’s like, “We need to play on Xbox Live.” I just have no idea how he finds time to play video games."

A FINE YOUNG MAN

Film Description:

It's 1962. Cold War tensions and the accompanying doomsday paranoia are reaching a fever pitch across the globe. The U.S. government is not concerned about beating the Russians to the moon, they are concerned about beating them to Heaven. And they want Peter to help. A dark satire that cuttingly critiques the ideological motives behind global conflict. 'A Fine Young Man' delivers a powerful and resonate punch in its shocking conclusion.

Directed and Written by Kevan Funk.

Network’s programming shakeups deliver the ‘SmackDown’ to sci-fi fans

Presumably fulfilling its post-rebranding promise to “Imagine Greater,” the former Sci Fi Channel — now known as Syfy — has imagined its way right out of the niche that made the cable network.

Forget about space operas, tech dramas or B-movie monsters (except for “Mega Piranha” — never forget “Mega Piranha”), programming shake-ups reveal Syfy is ready to live up to its theme-less new name. If the recent announcement that “Top Chef” alum Marcel Vigneron would be joining the network for a cooking show called “Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen” wasn’t proof enough, Syfy’s acquisition of “Friday Night SmackDown” should be.

Not that Syfy really wants anyone catching on to that fact. Much like shoehorning the word “quantum” into the title of Vigneron’s upcoming gastronomic offering acts as a symbolic nod to traditional viewers, Syfy’s president, David Howe, hopes he can even convince fans that wrestling somehow fits the old and largely abandoned genre, too.

After all, World Wrestling Entertainment’s “SmackDown” marks “the ultimate in imagination-based sports entertainment,” according to Howe.

Heh. Nice try...

... Yes, like it or not, all those shows now occupying prime-time nerd night, what was once the beloved “Battlestar Galactica’s” place of honor, will shuffle off to Tuesday to make room for the new two-hour block of bikini-clad men. “Stargate Universe,” “Sanctuary” and “Battlestar Galactica” prequel “Caprica” — some of Syfy’s best current content to make a date-free Friday night seem worthwhile — must simply make way for the guys with the big guns...

[NOTE: In October 2010, Stargate Universe's season two, Sanctuary's season three and the last half of Caprica's first season will premiere on Syfy (S).]

GateWorld Podcast: ‘Human’

by Darren Sumner

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

This week on the show David and Darren are, of course, talking about last Friday’s new episode of Stargate Universe! “Human” gave us a compelling look at Dr. Nicholas Rush’s past and his inner psyche. It also showed us just how far he’s willing to go to crack Destiny’s code. We’ll talk about Rush’s response to reliving his wife’s illness, the Lucian Alliance, and a return from Dr. Daniel Jackson (guest star Michael Shanks). We’ll also talk about the civilization discovered by the team in the B-story, and speculate a little on how the big cliffhanger might be resolved. And we’ll find out what podcast listeners thought of the episode!

But first: GateWorld’s own Chad Colvin pays us a visit to debrief on the Vancouver Stargate Convention, hosted by Creation Entertainment. While Darren and David had to stay home this year, Chad was hoppin’ busy covering all the stage panels, hosting GateWorld’s annual dinner (thanks to Propworx for donating the one-of-a-kind give-aways, plus Sci-Fried Band for more goodies), and interviewing nearly a dozen actors from SG-1, SGA, and SGU. Tune in to hear about Chad’s week, and watch the site for those interviews plus more from the Vancouver event.

Join our discussion! Just watch this Friday’s new episode of SGU and call the voicemail hotline by Monday to share your thoughts. (951) 262-1647.

Exclusive Stargate Universe Sneak Peek

April 29, 2010 05:19 PM EST

Here's an exclusive sneak peek at this week's episode of Stargate Universe (Friday, April 30, 9/8c, Syfy).

Here's how the network describes the episode, titled "Lost":

The situation is dire for Lt. Scott (Brian J. Smith), Eli (David Blue), Chloe (Elyse Levesque) and Greer (Jamil Walker Smith). While trapped beneath the ruins in an underground maze, Destiny jumped back into FTL leaving them behind. They must first find a way out of the ruins before they can figure out how to survive without the Destiny.

Meanwhile, unable to turn the massive ship around, Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) and Colonel Young (Louis Ferreira) work to devise a plan to get the lost crew members back.

Louis Ferreira: An Interview with SGU's Funny Man, Colonel Young (No, Really!)

News Thursday, April 29 by Captain

Photobucket

Whilst SGU has its share of lighter moments, it's fair to say that it has a heavy dose of darkness. A crew, stranded on the other side of the universe, no way of getting back, with a growing power struggle on board, threatening the future of the mission (if they had any to begin with!).

At the end of the first part of Season One, Colonel Everett Young finally went beyond the bounds of the measured, intelligent leader that had kept the fractured crew of military and civilians together. His dour, 'let's get on with this' attitude had been the glue for a group of people stuck with seemingly no hope. It was a fascinating moment, to see the true feelings of a man who seemed to define 'bottled up' - despite the obvious references to inter-military affairs.

Clearly there's more than meets the eye when it comes to this character. He's a fascinating creation from Brad Wright and Rob Cooper, but also from the actor who plays him - Canadian veteran actor, Louis Ferreira. What makes him even more fascinating is the man who plays him could not be more different. Jovial, puckish, quick to emote and the owner of a real live fart machine that he lets off during shooting in Vancouver, he is the joker of the SGU cast and crew.

You'd never know it watching him on screen. Talking to him off screen however...

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

SFP: In what way are you different from Everett Young?
LF: I am as far away as possible from Colonel Everett Young as is possible to get!

He can stay focused and on track. I'm very scattered and ADD and animated. Young is very military, very stoic, ethical - he operates with a clear sense of right and wrong, he can stay calm in the midst of a storm and take responsibility for the people around him. He takes looking after those eighty bodies on board to heart.

There's not a lot of room on board for joy. We're drinking water and eating mush - it's a survival story, which is what drew me to the part. In years to come (knock on wood), when the acceptance part of the story comes into play, it'll be really interesting to see that shift. All of a sudden where people are redefined. The idea of 'colonel' when you're on a ship with eighty people kind of changes meaning - indeed, almost becomes meaningless. That would be the time where the psychological nature of the character breaks down and I could insert more of my self into the part.

The challenge for me for the first season has been the focus of the man - the bigger picture: survival.

I personally love the comedy and the humour of Stargate's past, but I hope that we infuse Universe with the same humanity as the original shows...

Stargate Atlantis - SciFi and TV Talk's Blog: Q & A With Paul McGillion

Q & A With Stargate Atlantis’ Paul McGillion

by Steve Eramo

Paul McGillion

Last month, actor Paul McGillion (Stargate Atlantis‘ Dr. Carson Beckett) very kindly agreed to answer questions from the readers of SciFiAndTvTalk. We got through as many as we could, so without further delay, here are Paul’s answers. Enjoy, and thank you to everyone who sent in a question!

A brief excerpt:

... If you had the chance to play any movie or TV character, which would it be? (from Alena)
P McG – Bond…Pauly Bond.

Paul McGillion - photo courtesy of Joseph Mallozzi's blog

and

... Along with answering your questions, Paul also took some time out to talk about some of the recent and upcoming projects he has been busy working on.

P McG – I just finished filming Fruition, the second to last episode of V‘s first season. I play a character named Dr. Lawrence Parker, a telemetry expert who gets himself into a sticky situation so to speak. So we’ll see where it goes from there. Most of my scenes were with Elizabeth Mitchell (Erica Evans), who is fantastic. It was a great set to work on with a terrific crew as well as cast. Prior to that, I returned to Sanctuary, and my character of Terrence Wexford comes back and opens up the first two episodes of the third season. He’s especially prevalent in the second episode, and some very dramatic stuff happens on board the ship. The lizard is back and in full force and he’s got a lot of attitude. Terrence isn’t a very nice man and he’s got his problems. I think the word is “power-hungry.”

So it was great to be back and working with Amanda Tapping (Dr. Helen Magnus) and (executive producer) Martin Wood, who directed the episode. A lot of familiar faces from Stargate work on the show, too, so it was a real blast to be back and reprise my Wexford character. Again, we’ll see where it goes from there.

Prior to that I had a guest-starring role in a new Canadian series with Callum Keith Rennie (Battlestar Galactica) called Shattered and I played a really quirky and interesting character named Victor Hugo. About the only thing I can say is he turns out to be a very bad man. I also just finished a short film called A Fine Young Man that we’re going to submit to the Toronto Film Festival. It’s directed by an up-and-coming director named Kevin Funk and co-starring a very good friend of mine, Wes Salter (Supernatural), along with Ali Liebert (Harper’s Island) and Cole Humphries. It’s a period piece circa 1962 and a bit of a political thriller.

I did an independent film as well called Hit and Strum that we’re hoping to get into the festival circuit, too. I’m a co-star in that alongside Kurt Cowat and Michelle Harrison. And I also shot another movie, a thriller called Confined in which I co-starred with Emma Caulfield (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica) and David James Elliot (JAG), and that will be coming out shortly. So it’s been a busy few months for me, which I’m really happy about. And as always, just a note to everyone who reads this blog, from my lips to you guys, Steve Eramo is the man.

Thank you again, Paul! Make sure to tune in to ABC on Tuesday, May 11th @ 10:00 p.m. EST/PST for V’s “Fruition.”
