Burn Notice - Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell Interviews

'Burn Notice' Chat with Bruce Campbell and Jeffrey Donovan

USA’s “Burn Notice” season two picks up right where season one left off, and after watching the screener with the first two episodes, no sophomore slump will curse the droll, fast-paced series.

It’s a testosterone filled romp full of clever repartee between lead Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell. Gabrielle Anwar (Fiona) and Sharon Gless (mom) headline the female cast and are given their share of great writing too.

The Miami Herald’s reporter Doug Hanks notes in a July 7th piece that the production for “Burn Notice” expects to spend about $12.5 million in Florida this year filming the second season, and details the effects on their local economy. Not since "Miami Vice" has such a large TV production filmed there.

Suffice to say local businesses that supply film production are thrilled to have Donovan’s character Michael Westen come to grips with his shattered career, mother issues and his sexy crazy ex-IRA operative girlfriend in the southern Florida setting.

A brief excerpt:

Is MacGyver Michael’s weaponry handyman inspiration?

Jeffrey Donovan: Well you’d have to ask Matt Nix actually. He’s the one who came up with the idea of a guy who was MacGyver-esque, but you actually believed he could do those things.

So everything that we do in the show, you actually can make at home. Matt keeps a couple of ingredients out of the bombs just so no one, you know, blows up little Timmy.

Bruce, are you getting more fans who are older women?

Bruce Campbell: No, I’m not getting anything here in Miami. My wife is a very good ally in that respect. I don’t need to go method here. So everything is all under control here in Miami. I’m just standing back in awe of Mr. Donovan.

Jeffrey Donovan: He’s not getting older women fans. He’s getting me. That’s the new fan, yeah exactly.

Bruce Campbell Talks Burn Notice

July 7, 2008

In the second in our series of interviews with the cast and creative team of BURN NOTICE, theTVaddict.com proudly presents a round table discussion, well really rectangular table discussion with Bruce Campbell — who was kind enough to spend time with theTVaddict.com Senior Editor Amrie Cunningham [as well as numerous other media outlets] on a recent visit to the set.

A brief excerpt:

Do you think Sam has something to do with the burn?

BC: "Sam Raimi?"

Yeah, no, your character, Sam.

BC: "I don’t know that many Sams. So, uh, Sam have anything to do with the burn? No, not a chance. Sam is a, Sam is a true and blue patriot. One-hundred percent. I’m not even kidding, the character is. He loves his country, but these are three people who don’t like to go by the rules anymore. And I love that. I love the premise of the show where the… they, like, if a cop catches someone who stole your identity, they might catch ‘em, but they’re not going to get your money back. Michael Westen will catch ‘em and get your money back. That’s what’s cool. It’s the full circle, the full… and it’s helping the little guys. It’s all these highly trained people now who use to do a bunch of different stuff on much higher stakes. Now there all these sort of crash and burn victims who are now helping the little person. Makes is, you can’t help it, makes it a show that hopefully people can relate to. That’s what it’s all about, I think. Can the audience go, “I like that character,” whatever. Because you can blow stuff up all day long, but if you don’t care, what’s the difference?"

Stargate Atlantis - Monsters & Critics: Robert Picardo and Joe Mallozzi discuss command changes

Robert Picardo and Joe Mallozzi discuss command changes on Stargate: Atlantis

The fifth season of "Stargate Atlantis" launches on Sci Fi on July 11 -- with several cast changes, including a shift from starring to recurring status for Amanda Tapping, with actor Robert Picardo taking her place as the mission leader on the series.

Monsters and Critics joined some journalists and spoke with Stargate Atlantis star Robert Picardo and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi about the changes afoot in the Pegasus galaxy.

A brief excerpt:

With the first half of season five already on film, what would you say will be the turning point for viewers and ratings while continuing the second half and potentially a sixth season?

Joseph Mallozzi: The turning point? It’s not so much a turning point but a build from last year’s strong finish. I don’t recall off the top of my head what the numbers were but I know that Last Man -- our season finale -- finished very strongly.

And hopefully that’s something we can continue with the premiere: Search and Rescue and I’m sure some of you may have seen it along with the few thousand who happened to be cruising You Tube over the weekend or a couple of - last weekend.

And the reaction was overwhelming, positive from what I saw. I think it’s awfully indicative of what’s to come this season, a variety of action, character development, just hopefully what the fans have grown to love and really desire from the show.

In terms of standout episodes off the top of my head I mean, I’m very happy with the first half. But of course, one of the big episodes -- sort of like last year -- Be All My Sins [Remember'd] was a big mid-season two-parter - the second part of the mid-season two-parter.

In a similar way, the mid-season two-parter is going to be very big this year. It’s First Contact and The Lost Tribe. And of course, Daniel Jackson will be dropping in for an appearance and that’s going to be huge for a lot of the SG-1 fans who, , I’m sure have missed him and, have been asking, what the hell is taking so long for Daniel to come on over to the Pegasus Galaxy.

Well they get the chance in the mid-season two-parter. And, like last year’s Be All My Sins Remember'd, it’s full of surprises and action, and spectacular visual effects and some really nice character moments, particularly with regard to McKay and Daniel Jackson who are two characters that really haven’t had a chance to sort of play off each other.

They play off each other really well. I mean one of the things I said was these two guys -- Hewlett and Shanks -- are the fastest talking actors in Sci-Fi, bar none.
As a result - Martin Gero wrote both scripts and they were almost like 60-page scripts which a 60-page script is usually long.

I think First Contact was exactly to (top) and I’m not sure what Lost Tribe was - maybe a minute over. So, a lot of rapid fire talk between the two. And, hopefully, it’ll be an episode that the fans will love just as much as last year’s mid-season two-parter.

Feeling Lost? Need Sanctuary? Sci Fi can help!

Posted Jul 7th 2008 4:41PM by Jason Hughes

...I wanted the parting thing for you to think about is the premiere of Sanctuary. It's taking the place of Stargate: Atlantis, which is also stopping mid-season because ... well, that's what we do. Maybe they fear viewer fatigue, but then how do you explain 24 straight weeks of 24 being such a rousing success. How do you -- [the wife from the other room: "I can hear you typing angry. Remember your blood pressure, dear."]

As I was saying. Sanctuary premieres on Sci Fi Friday October 3 with a two-hour launch. They're billing it as "the first television series to feature live-action actors against primarily virtual sets." I guess they missed Drew Carey's Green Screen Show? Sanctuary started life as a web-only series featuring Stargate's Amanda Tapping. A hit online, it's been retooled for broadcast air and given a 13-episode commitment to find an audience. And it looks like the entire cast will be featured in the newer made-for-TV episodes as well.

I like that Sci Fi is looking to emerging technologies to enhance the television experience. It was a bold move when they launched Sanctuary online, as it was given a much bigger budget than most web series, and managed to create a virtual reality every bit as surreal and captivating as films like 300 and Sin City managed with their green screen techniques. Hopefully, this series can do well and we can see more original programming from Sci Fi that has less to do with wrestling and reality and more to do with science and fiction (together).

Slice of SciFi Interview with Rachel Luttrell

Posted by Sam on Sunday, 6 Jul 2008

In April 2007 we were privileged to have “Stargate: Atlantis” star Rachel Luttrell as our special guest for the online and XM-Satellite Radio Slice of SciFi Show. We had such a good time that we asked Rachel if she would come back to Slice of SciFi sometime in the future.

Since that time Rachel has given birth to a beautiful son; while on the show, her character Teyla also gave birth.

With Season Five getting ready to return this Friday (July 11) we asked our roving reporter, Linda Craddock, to visit with Rachel while she was on the set of ‘Atlantis’ in Vancouver. What resulted was this great fun interview.

A brief excerpt:

SoSf: The scene in “Quarantine” what were you doing out on the window sill?

RL: I know… what was I doing on the windowsill? I know it was probably just instinct. I was quite pregnant at the time and I remember just getting up on that windowsill while we were shooting and I remember saying ‘what am I doing?’ But everything was fine I just had a very, very active pregnancy.
