Joel Goldsmith has been charged with weighing every moment on Stargate going on 16 seasons. Baton in hand, he has braved the challenge of "reinventing the wheel" for this third live-action incarnation of the Stargate television series with fresh faces and a grittier atmosphere.
In GateWorld's exclusive interview, Joel reveals his struggle -- and ultimate satisfaction -- in finding SGU's voice after more than 300 hours of Stargate. He talks about his favorite moments in the pilot, weaving the tapestry of a more "minimalist" score, and gaining satisfaction from the unfolding plot.

GateWorld is proud to bring you our first interview with this young composer, who shares not only his insight into how he creates for the franchise, but has graciously shared unreleased samples of his Stargate work in the audio version!
Neal discusses musical selections which originally made him fall in love with the art, his journey to composing for the franchise and, of course, some of his favorite pieces. We also discuss the growing influence of the gaming industry and what the future may have in store for new entertainment mediums.

GW: Tell us about the path that led you to Stargate. How'd that ball start to get rolling?
NA: A friend introduced me to Joel back in the day when I was setting up equipment and helping out other composers.
GW: What season of Stargate was this in when you were first introduced to Joel?
NA: I started right before Season Three [of SG-1]. He had just wrapped Season Two. He was moving to a new house and a new studio. I helped him move and get set up in his new studio and stayed on as his assistant, and over the years did everything from mixing to orchestrating to helping manage his sample library. Eventually ended up getting to write on the show which was a great opportunity.

RC: My parents deserve a lot of credit for any awesomeness I might possess.
The most difficult aspect of shooting in Vegas was, as always, a lack of money. Sorry, but that's what it usually comes down to. We went way over budget on this episode but it's never enough. Money equals time. We had two days to shoot something that we needed much more time to do properly. We had a crew most of us had never worked with that had to be flown in from LA. Getting a casino property to agree to let us do what we wanted was a challenge as well. Planet Hollywood made it all possible. We did have one big mishap where one of the camera crews forgot to reload film before the big stunt. — the one where the Wraith jumps from the roof. We didn't know until after the footage came back and it was too late. We pieced it together from the angles we got but the hero angle I really wanted is missing.
I chose the songs asking many people their opinions along the way. Yes, we paid for them. Another significant budget overage. I have to credit Charlie Cohen Executive VP of MGM for wanting to make the end of season five as special as it could be. Joel Goldsmith was very excited about stepping outside the box for an episode. His music is brilliant as usual. He wrote everything except the three songs we bought. Vegas was an experiment in many ways. It was an opportunity to break the mold and try something different. Universe will not follow the style of Vegas but it will most definitely be much different than previous Stargate series. The shooting style and use of more contemporary music are part of what will hopefully make Universe stand out.

Stargate Atlantis - NEW Behind the Scenes Video from 'The Lost Tribe'

October 11, 2008: Fuuuudge! Upcoming Guests! My Thoughts on Your Thoughts.
... Well, I was in the office yesterday to do an on-camera sit down with Special Features Producer Ivon Bartok for the season five Deleted Scenes DVD Extra. I introed three: the longer version of the sword fight sequence from Broken Ties, the uncut version of the McKay-Beckett scene from Whispers, and a deleted Woolsey-Shen scene from Remnants. In the case of the sword fight, I explained that cuts were made, not so much because we were running long, but because I felt the sequence was more dynamic in its paired-down version. In the case of the McKay-Beckett scene, I explained that the conversation was significantly trimmed down because the episode was running long. In general, when it comes time to edit and episode for time, the best case scenario would be to fine an entire scene to excise. This opportunity rarely presents itself because the reality is if you CAN remove an entire scene without missing it, then that scene didn't belong in the script in the first place meaning you, as a writer, have somehow failed in your duty to create a nice, tight script. I then moved onto my intro for the Woolsey-Shen scene which I was able to entirely excise from Remnants. Ahem. We WERE nine and half minutes over.
To those of you wondering - I forwarded Executive Producer Brad Wright all your questions. All twenty-six pages full. I aim to invite Marty G. over to talk about Brain Storm once that episode airs. And, finally, if Rob Cooper is feeling chatty, maybe I can get him to swing
by once Vegas airs. Other upcoming guests, questions have gone out to costume designer Val Halverson, composer Joel Goldsmith, and stunt coordinator James Bamford.
And now, I'd like to start gathering questions for SGA's Master of Mayhem, the Excelsior of Explosions, none other than our Special Effects Supervisor Wray Douglas. Wray has been with the show since the early SG-1 days. He and his team have been responsible for everything from squib hits and car stunts to menacing fog and the fiery blast that took out the beloved doctor Beckett. So if you have questions for Wray, start posting.

Yes, Todd set the Daedalus on a collision course that would have wiped out everyone on board but, really, what choice did he have? First, the device was a huge threat to his kind and he was in a position to put an end to that thread. Second, he assumed he'd been double-crossed by Atlantis, that they were responsible for initiating the Attero device, so, in his mind, they deserved to be "inconvenienced". Third, as I believe Das pointed out - if Ronon hadn't taken out the weapons systems, he wouldn't have had to go to his last resort: crashing the Daedalus. Still, yes, he almost did wipe out the ship and everyone on board but, at the end of the day, he had little choice. But I'm sure that whiny, narrow-minded Sheppard will take it as a personal affront.
How was Keller "mean" to Ronon at episode's end? She was in an awkward position and felt it only right that Ronon know she was interested in someone else.
The reveal on the alien was a cool twist compliments of Rob Cooper who came up with the idea when we were first spinning the story. He also came up with the explosive side effect of the attero device.
Today's video: Behind every good Asgard are at least two great puppeteers.

September 19, 2008: Last Call
Production on Stargate Atlantis wrapped today for most of our cast and crew. As the sets go dark here at The Bridge Studios, the scene shifts to Vegas for a few more days of filming after which work on the series is finally complete. Well, almost complete because work continues for post, viz, the producers, and Joel Goldsmith who still have weeks to go before they can sail off into the sunset.
Yesterday, Bob Picardo came by the office after he wrapped and, as promised, took the time to sit down and answer some of your questions. Rather than do a video interview, we opted for a written Q&A which I’ll be posting next week as part of a special Bob Picardo guest blog. Speaking of guest blogs - Executive Producer/Writer Carl Binder has kindly agreed to field your questions and comments on Tracker. So, if you happen to catch tonight’s episode of Atlantis and feel like raking Carl over the coals on this one, let’s hear from you.
Amanda Tapping also swung by the office this morning to say goodbye. She’s been working very hard these past few months but still found the time to put in an appearance in our final episode. With the end of production on Stargate Atlantis less than a month away, I'm going to do my best to introduce you all to some of the amazing unsung heroes who have worked very hard behind the scenes these many years. They may not get the all-expenses-paid invites to the overseas conventions but that doesn't mean that their contribution to the success of the show was no less important than the likes of the series regulars, writers, or producers. Over the past couple of months, you got to know the likes of VFX Supervisor Mark Savela, Director of Photography Jim Menard. In the coming days, it'll be Props Master Evil Kenny Gibbs and Director Andy Mikita. Among the many others on my "to pester" list: Composer Joel Goldsmith, Stunt Coordinator James Bam Bam Bamford, Director Will Waring, Playback Supervisor Krista McLean, SPFX Supervisor Wray Douglas, Costume Designer Valerie Halverson, Production Designer James Robbins, and many others. Can't promise they'll all have the time to drop by, but it doesn't hurt to ask - or apply extreme pressure if they prove reluctant (Yes, I'm talking about you, Will.).
As for today, I'm happy to turn this blog over to actress Sharon Taylor who went from a "blink and you'll miss her" appearance as a replicator in Progeny to a recurring role as gate technician Amelia Banks...

May 22, 2008: Drunken Monkey Acquitted in Hit and Run Death of Local Man

...Well, I’m pleased to report I’ve finally completed a very rough beat sheet for Remnants, formerly a “very special Stargate: Atlantis”, now a “not so special Stargate: Atlantis”. However, I’m sure that once the other writers weigh in with their brilliant ideas, it’ll go from “not so special” to “one of passing interest”. So far, I’ve got the word out to a couple of potential guest stars, discussed the look of the mainland, and have been considering some of the more important character moments I want to explore with Sheppard, McKay, and Woolsey.
Dropped by the FX Stage where David Hewlett and Michael Shanks were doing their thing. According to Marty G. who is directing 2nd unit, they’re both in crazy-good moods and their scenes are going swimmingly.
I was back in the editing suite this afternoon working on Whispers after receiving notes from my fellow producers, the network, and the studio. Once I’d made the required cuts and trims, the episode was thirty seconds short. Hunh. If you’ll recall, it took me approximately two hours to get it to time when it was thirty-five seconds long. I wish it were as easy as simply adding that time back in but, alas, we had to go through the episode again, scene by scene, adding Sheppard’s warning here, putting back Mirellus’s exit there. Finally, we’re to time and, following a brief conversation with the uber-talented Joel Goldsmith about the score, I am done. For now.
Today’s pic: Remember the old Marvel Team-Up where Spiderman would partner with another superhero to take down the villain of the month? It was always interesting to see who the webhead would team up with. Sometimes, it would be someone really cool like Wolverine or The Punisher. Other times, it would be someone somewhat less cool like, say, Frog-man. Well, consider today’s pic the Atlantis equivalent of the old Marvel Team-Up, and a definite Spidey-Wolverine combo.

May 2, 2008: That's a wrap!
Nicole de Boer and Paul McGillion
...It was an excellent day and marked the end of the Whispers shoot (outstanding inserts and pick-ups aside). Christina Cox wrapped yesterday and, today, it was everyone else's turn: Nicole de Boer, Janina Gavankar, Leela Savasta, and, last
but not least, the lovely Paul McGillion. A great time was had by all and I was genuinely kind of sad to see the episode wrap. Will declared it the most difficult episode he has ever shot. But also the most fun. I can't wait to see a cut.

I stayed late yet again, wandering over to Stage 2 where The Queen was being shot to take a few snaps of that creepy new wraith, check out the amazing sets, and grab one of the complimentary smokies being served. I returned to the FX Stage as the second unit pizza delivery arrived. "Worksafe B.C. prohibits eating on set,"I informed a
bewildered P.A., confiscating his barbecue chicken pizza.
It was delicious.

Answer: Most of the time, I'm simply too busy to spend time on set. In the case of Whispers (as was the case with Harmony late last season), I have a window before I start my next script (episode #16). Also, this episode is a little more complex than most, requiring a substantial amount of fog FX, and I wanted to be on hand to deal with any potential problems. Fortunately, things went swimmingly.

Answer: I've alerted the actors, crew, and any guest stars that I may be snapping pics for the blog. If, for whatever the reason, someone prefers not to have their photo taken and/or posted, I'll happily respect their decision and avoid taking pictures of them until such a time as they express a willingness to have their picture taken again.

Goldsmith Talks Stargate DVD Scores
Joel Goldsmith, the longstanding composer for SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate SG-1, told SCI FI Wire that he used different approaches to creating the scores for the two feature-length Stargate movies arriving on DVD.
Stargate: The Ark of Truth, now in stores, used some of the themes Goldsmith set up in the series for the Ori and the Replicators, while the upcoming Stargate: Continuum allowed him to be more expansive in his approach.
"First of all, I could use a symphony orchestra rather than electronics that simulate an orchestra," said Goldsmith, who worked on SG-1 starting with the pilot in 1997. "And because the Ark movie wrapped up some of the stories so well, I reached for a few of the familiar themes from the Ori and Replicators and then created different situations and new themes for Teal'c. Of course, everything was more cinematic."

Continuum, which arrives on DVD in July, is more of a stand-alone film, Goldsmith said. "It is a great, old-fashioned SG-1 film," he said. "It is more retro-Stargate, and, without giving away too much, it's going back to some more things from the past."
Meanwhile, Goldsmith continues working on the spinoff series Stargate Atlantis. "This will be a fantastic season," he said. "People will be really happy with it. They did a great job."

A brief excerpt:
The first SG-1 direct-to-DVD feature, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, was just released to stores this week. Recently, GateWorld gave Stargate composer Joel Goldsmith a call and asked him to go into detail about individual aspects of the score.
"What I did was we opened up with the original Stargate main theme and bridge," Joel told GateWorld. "Instead of going to what was the Goa'uld theme we went to the Ori theme ... I thought it transitioned very well from 'old Stargate' into 'new Stargate.'

I returned to work to find not one but two director's cuts AND a final mix awaiting me. Kudos to Joel Goldsmith on his terrific score for This Mortal Coil. This one is really special. Andy's director's cut of Midway is a lot of fun and chock full of action. Watch the big guys throw down and mete out some serious punishment with the big guns (and their equally big fists). Meanwhile, Will did a masterful job on Harmony. I LOVE this episode. I can't say enough great things about Jodelle Ferland's performance. Her interactions with the boys is both hilarious and touching.
Concerning the leaked episodes debacle… Yeah, sending out the rough cuts was a "major oversight" but, to be fair, SciFi was sending out those press kits as part of their ongoing efforts to promote the show's upcoming premiere. Also, Mark Stern and co. have been nothing short of great this year, showing us a lot of creative support throughout a sometimes bumpy run. So, regardless of how thing shake out in the end, we really do appreciate all of the time and effort they put into helping make this Atlantis`s best season yet. Also, to all those who don't know yet - SciFi Channel will be broadcasting season 4 in HD! Trust me - the show will look that much better this year!

Answer: It's unlikely.
ZoniDuck writes: "Hypothetically speaking, if a person had... access to the leaked episodes, but had not downloaded them yet, and said imaginary person (who allegedly does not have a Nielsen box) were trying to be strong and wait until 9/28 (despite the fact that everyone and their mother is squeeing and flinging spoilers around), could you offer some words of encouragement, and explain the reasons why watching a rough cut of the episodes is a horrible, awful idea?"
Answer: Well, if this hypothetical person was, hypothetically speaking, going to hypothetically watch the downloaded version anyway, I would suggest they watch the September 28th premiere on SciFi so that they can be surprised and blown away by the unexpected - story, revelations, visual effects - and then check out the rough cut in their possession as a sort of behind-the-scenes/in-the-making featurette to give them a better appreciation of what goes into the making of a given episode.
Elizabeth writes: "1) Any Jack and Sam moments in Stargate Continuum? 2) What happened to the little girl in Sateda? Did she survive? Does Ronon have any children? 3) Who is going to be in season five? Is O'Neill going to be in season five?"
Answers: 1) Yes, they are in scenes together. 2) She survived and was placed with another off-world community the Satedans did trade with. Ronon has no children. 3) No idea.
Horse N. Buggy writes: "Obviously, Nielson ratings are the big ticket item determining ratings. But for those of us without a magic box, does it help for us to buy episodes on iTunes?"
Answer: Good iTunes sales would certainly go a long way toward confirming to MGM that a fifth season would be a great idea.

Answer: Well, if this hypothetical person was, hypothetically speaking, going to hypothetically watch the downloaded version anyway, I would suggest they watch the September 28th premiere on SciFi so that they can be surprised and blown away by the unexpected - story, revelations, visual effects - and then check out the rough cut in their possession as a sort of behind-the-scenes/in-the-making featurette to give them a better appreciation of what goes into the making of a given episode.
Elizabeth writes: "1) Any Jack and Sam moments in Stargate Continuum? 2) What happened to the little girl in Sateda? Did she survive? Does Ronon have any children? 3) Who is going to be in season five? Is O'Neill going to be in season five?"
Answers: 1) Yes, they are in scenes together. 2) She survived and was placed with another off-world community the Satedans did trade with. Ronon has no children. 3) No idea.
Horse N. Buggy writes: "Obviously, Nielson ratings are the big ticket item determining ratings. But for those of us without a magic box, does it help for us to buy episodes on iTunes?"
Answer: Good iTunes sales would certainly go a long way toward confirming to MGM that a fifth season would be a great idea.

Answer: I'm not sure what you mean by "a factor" but certainly love will influence a story or two this upcoming season.

Well, even though I was back at the office today in body, in spirit I was with Will Waring and co. over at Green Timbers where they were shooting day #4 of Harmony. I hope my spirit brought an umbrella because it was downright miserable this morning.
Not so miserable at the production offices though. The first draft of The Last Man is out and it’s fantastic. Paul is now doing is pass on Outcast. Carl was at post all day, cutting Quarantine. And Marty G. is preparing for his last day of prep on Trio before catching a flight to T.O. for the Toronto International Film Festival Premiere of his movie YPF. I did an interview with SciFi’s Kathy Huddleston, checked out the test on the tilting set, talked to Joel Goldsmith regarding the end of this Mortal Coil (Oh yeah, watched a Day One Mix of This Mortal Coil), and generally lolly-gagged, dilly-dallied, shilly-shallied, dawdled, frittered, and toddled. No, strike that. There was no toddling. Tomorrow, I’m heading to Green Timbers for Harmony day #5: the other night shoot!
