SDCC 2010 exclusive: Ming-Na on 'Stargate Universe

by Curt Wagner on 07.29.10

Ming-Na cracked up "Stargate Universe" fans during the Syfy series' panel at San Diego Comic Con over the weekend, talking about her "iPrecious" and "getting stoned."

Of course that's a joke; she means when her "SGU" character, Camille Wray, uses the communication stones to go back to Earth. I was able to chat with her a little more about what's in store for Camille in Season 2 right after the panel--which included Robert Carlyle, Alaina Huffman, David Blue and exec producer and panel moderator Robert Cooper.

Robert is the award winning executive producer and writer of the MGM Stargate franchise. You can see new episodes of Stargate Universe on the Syfy Channel this Fall 2010.

We talked a bit about the recent news that Mr. Cooper will be taking a step back from working on Stargate as well as his possible plans for the future.

AGE is not kind to any actor. But that’s not the only factor working against 47-year-old US actress Ming-Na.

She is also a minority Asian American in white-dominated Hollywood.

Talk about a double whammy.

Macau-born Ming-Na, who moved to the US when she was four, admits that there are fewer roles “written specifically for us as Asian characters” in Hollywood.

Speaking to The New Paper over the phone from Vancouver, she said: “There will always be limitations. But I’ve never strived to be super famous.

“I just love my work and feel blessed to get a part I like. Careers like (The Golden Girls veteran actress) Betty White’s are few and far between.

“Seventy per cent of my characters have not been written for Asians, like Camile Wray (in US sci-fi TV series Stargate Universe). I’ll just keep acting because it pays the bills and keeps me busy...”

A brief excerpt:

Your character, Camille Wray, is a bit of an audience splitter. She’s caught between the civilians and the military, tries to be a peacemaker and it doesn’t work out...
MN: "It’s interesting because this is the first character where I’ve had to find and justify her... political ambitions, let’s say. She manipulates but to, I think, the good of the civilians. So she will manipulate situations or befriend whomever she needs to get everyone home. Ultimately her ambition is a good one, because she wants to get home! But sometimes, yes, it clashes with the military and it causes mutinies. I think it’s great fun! Nothing like a little mutiny to get things going! [Laughs]"

TV Junkie Interview: Alaina Huffman of Syfy's 'Stargate Universe'

Photobucket

Alaina Huffman (@alainahuffman) plays 1st Lt. Tamara "TJ" Johansen on the Syfy channel's hit series, "Stargate Universe" aka "SGU" to those in the know. You have also seen Huffman as the Black Canary in The CW's "Smallville" for the past couple seasons. Huffman splits her time between the Vancouver soundstage where "SGU" is shot and Los Angeles. We had a chance to check in with her before the upcoming season finale. "SGU" airs on Fridays on Syfy at 9pm and will resume next week.

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

The TV Junkie: Who from the cast have you learned the most from?
Alaina Huffman: "Oh, that's a great question. I draw so much from them all individually. There is such a sense of respect among all the actors and we genuinely all enjoy each other's company and we actually hang out quite a bit, to the extent that last season one of the producers told us to take a break from each other, "you don't have to hang out with each other every weekend" - and we're like "really, because we really like to!" So we spent quite a bit of time with each other when we were back in LA.

That being said, Robert Carlyle is such a great actor, and such a character actor - you learn so much from him. He actually directed the first episode of season two, so I was really excited to work with him because I thought if I worked with him as a director I could understand how he works as an actor. Also, Louis Ferreira, he could not be further from his character, he is so funny and easy going and loving and genuine, he's really not that stuffy Colonel Young that he plays - he does all these character voices, he's very entertaining. Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque, are such stand-up people, they're so much fun to work with. They're all such a great group, I really draw from everyone..."

Louis Ferreira faces old, new foes in 'Stargate Universe'

by Curt Wagner on 04.02.10

Photobucket

When "Stargate Universe" returns Friday, things won't be going well for Col. Everett Young.

The leader of a rag-tag band of survivors aboard the starship Destiny, played by Louis Ferreira, is second-guessing his shocking decision to abandon his chief antagonist, Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle), on a dusty planet.
"I think it weighs heavy on him," Ferreira told me during a recent phone interview. "He's a kind of a fatherly figure. It's that old-school, '50's dad that people say, 'My father, man, he's just [bleeping] tough and would never let me get away with that.' But he has a heart of gold, you know?"...

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

Rush and Camille Wray (Ming-Na) are sort of the troublemakers, the pains in the butt. But Young seems to be the one having issues with them. It makes me wonder if he's actually the problem? As he says of Rush, "He's a lot of work." Is Young really a lot of work?
Yeah. Well, he's not the greatest. I think that [the writers will] be very happy when [viewers] are all over the place: "We like Rush! No, we don't! it's Young, now it's Rush, now it's Young. And no, no, it's Scott!" You know what I mean?

I think that's the show that they intended to create. I think in the last episode, "Justice," Young makes a very harsh, rash decision that some could easily question. I understand the questionability of it ... But Young's intention is to get people home, and he has a guy whose clear intention is to explore this ship [instead]. I think people on the fan side are going, "Well, no, we want to stay on the ship, that's what we want to see, we want to see the ship." Right? So they can easily side that way [with Rush].

But the reality for me is that if you are standing in the way of getting us home and [Young] makes the decision that Eli ... may be my ticket [home]. He may be my Rush without the evil, if you will. And that's enough for [Young] to sort of make the decision that he does.

Stargate Universe - Mr Radio Interviews: Ming-Na Audio Interview

At Blog Talk Radio's Mr Radio Interviews:

INTERVIEW: Ming-Na, star, STARGATE UNIVERSE

4/1/2010 - 30 min

Ming-Na brings her natural hotness to SyFy’s Stargate Universe… and Mr. Media!

I always dreamed there would come a day when I would meet the lovely actress Ming-Na. But I thought it would be in a smoky, out of the way bar, we’d both be single…

I’m sorry—where was I?

Most of us probably remember Ming-Na best from her run as a young doctor on the long-running NBC medical drama, ER. Or, if you’ve got a daughter, like I do, you’ve probably sat through the Disney animated films Mulan and Mulan 2 a couple hundred times. That’s right, Ming-Na was the voice of the heroic Mulan.

More recently, she did an eye-popping arc as one of Charlie Sheen’s love interests on Two and a Half Men, which somehow led to her joining the star-filled ensemble of SyFy’s new series, Stargate Universe. New shows begin airing Friday, April 2 @ 9 p.m.
MING-NA AUDIO EXCERPT: “As much as I’m proud to be part of the Disney legacy as ‘Mulan,’ I’m also proud to be one of the Charlie Harper women–that legacy. We’re acting, we’re working. And even though we’re in bed together, it’s just part of our crazy, crazy job.”

A Possible Emmy In The Works? : SGU Returns from Hiatus and Ferreira and Smith Spill the Beans

Tuesday, 30 March 2010

Photobucket

Editors Note: The fist two episodes of the next half of SGU, “Space” and “Divided” were released to the press prior to this call. This article does contain a spoiler, but not one that is unexpected, and not the details of how it is implemented. So stop reading now if that is an issue.

As we return to the Destiny, the strife between the civilian and military crew members, forced to co-exist aboard the ancient star ship explodes. The first two entries in this second ten of the fledging entry into the Stargate Universe establish two facts unequivocally; one this is the best science fiction show currently in production for US television (and maybe the best drama also), and two, if there isn’t an Emmy in this for at least two of the cast members, then there is something wrong with that process. Ming-Na and Louis Ferreira (along with another actor) stand apart from the ensemble cast in these two episodes in scenes that explode the conflict and distrust between civilian and military control aboard the Destiny. This story line is done in a way relevant to real world politics, and that echoes the best sentiments of relevancy previously reserved for the network’s Battlestar Galactica, a show which once dealt with a similar theme. Watch these two as their relationship expands and explodes, or you are missing out on some of the best acting and character development of the year, maybe ever for the network. And you won’t believe what Camile Wray does to Col. Young, and will come to understand why, if he is the father figure of the crew, she needs a good spanking! (inside joke). Spoilers won’t be revealed here, other than to say that Rush isn’t really gone for long (but details can be found elsewhere on the internet) and that this show firmly establishes itself as what it is: the flagship series of the SyFy Channel.
