Smarten up and salute Cain, people, because we've been talking to Michelle Forbes at Starfury's Battlestar Galactica convention.

Born in Texas in January 1965, Forbes is perhaps best known from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Homicide: Life on the Street. After Battlestar, where she made a brief but important appearance as Admiral Cain, she's now in True Blood. The rest of this interview will be appearing in our amazing Battlestar Galactica-themed special issue, on sale Wednesday 4 March with posters and gifts! But we thought you might like this brief snippet as a little treat to get you in the mood:

A brief excerpt:

SFX: What sort of response do your characters get at conventions around the world?

Forbes: "Oh my God! Battlestar is shockingly popular in Germany. In Germany we had 4000 people at a convention. It's amazing how far people travel. People were travelling in from Italy - it blows my mind actually. It's such a universal thing, and Germans are big into science fiction. Turns out Germans and criminals on Death Row were my biggest fans from the Star Trek days. I guess they were running it a lot in Germany. But the Death Row thing… I don't want to get a complex! I used to get a lot of prison letters but that's sort of calmed down. I think it's because of some of the characters I've played I've always had a bit of an interesting fan base."

Interview with Battlestar Galactica's Cally

She's one of the many Battlestar characters to contemplate suicide, and one of the few to actually get spat out of an airlock: SFX spoke to the lovely Nicki Clyne about her character Cally Tyrol when we caught up with her at Starfury's Battlestar convention in December.

Most of this interview will be appearing in our amazing Battlestar Galactica-themed special issue, on sale Wednesday 4 March with posters and gifts! But we thought you might like this snippet as a little treat to get you in the mood.

A brief excerpt:

... SFX: Everybody says Galactica was a great set to work on. How true is that really?

Clyne: "I begin to feel cheesy at times because we're all saying the same thing about how great the show is and how wonderful it is to work with everyone on the show, but it's absolutely true! We do really care about each other, and I think that's what got us through even - even though there were times when there were conflicts. It's not like we were in a fantasyland. We had real life conflicts, and people had struggles they took out on other people, whatever it may be that happens in any work or team environment."

"I think because there was such a strong vision that everyone involved was there to uphold, all the petty things just weren't important, and everyone who worked on the show really had an understanding of what we were expressing and how important it was to have an integrity in that aspect. So I think that's really what got us through. If it was a different show but all the same people, it may not have been true. I think it's a combination of finding really amazing people and talented and gifted and skilled, along with the fact that the writing, the producing, the directing was top-notch."

Some Idle Chatter With "The Ed"

So Edward James Olmos and I were talking on the phone the other day. Really, how many times will I get to say that in my life?!

Okay, anyone who watches HypaSpace religiously (and if you don't then SHAME ON YOU) knows that we've had exclusive interviews each week with the cast of Battlestar Galactica. True, they've been phoners but I emphasize the word "exclusive"!

Every week since the beginning of season four, we've chatted with which ever BSG cast member was featured prominently in that week's show. We've had James Callis, Jamie Bamber, and Grace Park just to name a few.

This week EJO gave us a ringy-ding, which is just insanely cool to me. That said, I do try to maintain a certain amount of professional decorum, basically attempting not to sound like a gushing twelve year-old girl. I was making mental notes as Edward commented on last week's episode, "Revelations", thinking about what a great clip he was giving us and how well it would work for this week's HypaSpace. As he spoke, however, voices coming from the background on his end of the line were getting louder and louder. So much so, the camera person grabbed my attention.

And now to add to the excitement, guess who's sitting in our office right now? The one and only Nicki Clyne, who, I must say, is also awesome! She's getting ready to host this week's edition of HypaSpace, airing Friday at 7pm. Immediately following that is Fandom Forum: Battlestar Galactica at 7:30, and like I said before, if you miss it, SHAME ON YOU!

In one of her first interviews since the death of her character, Cally Tyrol, on SCI FI’s hit series Battlestar Galactica, actress Nicki Clyne appeared live on ShaunOMac’s TV Talk. She spoke in depth about her time on the show, and what she liked about the character, what she is doing now, and her plans for the future.

Shaun> So what did you think when you opened up the script, and it said she’s going to shoot you out the launch bay?

Nicki> Actually, I didn’t find out that way. I’d been waiting to hear what was going to happen with the next season and start getting into contract negotiations and what not, and it was getting very close to the time of starting to film. I was getting a little concerned, and so I had this kind of feeling. I wasn’t really sure what it was, and then I got a call from Ron and David. Then I pretty much knew what was going on and why I didn’t have a contract. I had a really neat conversation with them when they phoned, and they were very gracious, and of course with a show like ours, which I feel is so strong with the story line and the writing aspect of it, I really didn’t question that it served the story. Of course, I’m sad. I was upset to be leaving the show, but it made sense to me, and it made it that much easier to swallow in the end.

Shaun> How was it filming those scenes? You started out sneaking after them and watching them in that chamber there talking. Then she unraveled throughout the episode. That had to be exhausting for you shooting those scenes.

Nicki> It was, it was really intense both emotionally and physically. It was good because I had a lot going on after 5 years, this being the end and knowing that. So I had a lot going on for me personally and also the physical strain of working on wires. I don’t know if you remember at the end, there’s me floating in space and we did all kinds of different set ups to try and make that work. One of them was me hanging upside down from wires and spinning around. I came home bruised and battered many days from hanging around.
