Richard Dean Anderson - Amazon Armchair Commendary: VIDEO Interview

2008 Interview Vault: MacGyver Talks MacGruber

by Stephanie Reid-Simons on December 31, 2008

So when I met Richard Dean Anderson a few months ago, he was promoting his movie, Stargate Continuum (it's good; you should watch it). But I couldn't resist asking him about one of my favorite Saturday Night Live sketches, "MacGruber." Sometimes these kinds of questions are not greeted with grins. But Anderson has a healthy sense of humor about the iconic (and comedic) nature of MacGyver (ad-free episodes live here), and played along happily, bless him. P.S. That Rainn Wilson thing he talks about is here.

TV Squad Ten: New shows to look forward to in 2009 - VIDEO

Posted Dec 30th 2008 1:01PM by Mike Moody

Enough looking back already! Let's forget that 2008 was a mostly dismal year for TV and focus on the future. From sci-fi detectives to modern Mad Men, the 2009 TV season has a lot to offer. Here are ten new shows to keep on your radar (listed by premiere date).

1. The United States of Tara, premieres January 18 on Showtime
2. Trust Me, premieres Jan. 26 on TNT
3. Dollhouse, premieres Feb. 13 on FOX
4. Castle, premieres March 9 on ABC
5. Kings, premieres March 19 on NBC
6. Cupid, premieres March 24 on ABC
7. The Untitled Amy Poehler Project, slated to premiere in spring on NBC
8. Sit Down, Shut Up, slated to premiere in spring on FOX

9. Stargate Universe, premieres next summer on Sci Fi

The casting of Scottish actor Robert Carlyle as the lead has me excited about this upcoming Stargate series. So far, creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper haven't offered many details about Universe. All we know is that it follows a crew of civilians and scientists trapped on an Ancient ship that jumps throughout the far reaches of space. Wright and Cooper are also telling fans to expect "edgier" elements, a young cast and more character-themed storylines than we've seen from Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Some fans have already tagged this thing Stargate: 90210, but I think we might see something fresh and unexpected with Universe.

10. Warehouse 13, slated to premiere next summer on Sci Fi

I'm also curious about Lie To Me and Merlin. What are you looking forward to watching in '09?

Nye explores possibility of gate travel

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 30 (GENERAL)

GateWorld asks Bill Nye about the likelihood of surviving a journey through a wormhole.

A brief excerpt:

The idea of instantaneous travel to other galaxies, times and dimensions has been bandied about by science fiction lovers hundreds of years before the Stargate was a twinkle in film writer Dean Devlin's eye.

But is it really possible? GateWorld asked Bill Nye the Science Guy this very question in a recent interview, and here's what he had to tell us...

Stargate Atlantis - Alex Levine's Blog Update Dec 29 '08 - 'Vegas'

From Alex Levine's SciFi.com blog update for 'Vegas':

December 29, 2008

Vegas, baby, Vegas

So by now you've probably heard that some of this week's episode entitled "Vegas" was actually shot in Vegas. Rob Cooper wrote and directed this one, and sometime in August he said to me, "You know, we're probably going to need someone to come down to Vegas just to deal with legal clearances." And of course that's my job! So I said to Rob, "Well great. I'll be there." But there was just a pause on the other end of the line and then a chuckle. "You're just messin' with me, aren't you?" And he was. But truth be told, there wasn't a lot of time to party and gamble because they were too busy working. That is, until the shoot was finished. Then, and only then, they gambled and golfed. And a little bit before the shoot too.

Even though I wasn't invited along for the ride, I was one of the people responsible for getting Planet Hollywood involved. That's the casino that allowed us to shoot on their premises and do our chase scene on the roof. We asked a number of casinos if they were
interested in having us shoot there, but but only a handful of casinos even responded. I guess they're too busy raking in the cashola to worry about a little extra publicity. Other than the Planet Hollywood, I understand the Riviera was interested, and a couple others (New York, New York and Treasure Island) were considering letting us shoot their exteriors. At the time of our preproduction, the film "21" came out on DVD and Rob and I watched it, wondering where all the casinos were that were featured in the film. As you might expect, it was the ones I mentioned - Planet Hollywood and the Riviera. The Hard Rock did allow them to shoot there, but I think it might have only been the exterior ...

Enjoy Vegas!
