STARGATE CHILLS IN THE ARCTIC

Talk about a cool shoot! The latest SG-1 movie, 'Stargate: Continuum,' was filmed in the Arctic, not far from the top of the world. In the DVD, out on July 29, the SG-1 team is trapped after longtime alien enemy Ba'al (Cliff Simon) travels back in time, hijacks the first Stargate and stows it away in the Arctic ice to keep it away from humanity. For what's touted as the most northern movie production ever, Amanda Tapping, Ben Browder and Richard Dean Anderson filmed at a scientific station on a moving ice floe above the Arctic circle.

"We lived in plywood boxes with kerosene heaters and chipped ice to make water," Tapping tells TV Guide. Despite the -58 degree chill that gave her "a tiny bit" of frostbite on her cheek, Tapping says, "Ben and I were so giddy about walking in this vast wasteland. We made snow angels, giggling like 6-year olds."

"It was really nice to get the gang back together," Tapping says.

Stargate Atlantis (Fridays, 10/9C, SciFi Channel)

With Amanda Tapping off doing Sanctuary, Col. Sam Carter is gone. That leaves the officious Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo) in charge, and with a troublesome galactic coalition rising, Atlantis' fifth season brings lots of change. It's also a season of stellar returns, including an arc featuring dying clone Dr. Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) thawed out to fight a plague. Alien warrior Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa) goes to the dark side after old buddy Tyre (Iron Chef America's Mark Dacascos) sells him out to the pasty-faced Wraith. Stargate SG-1's Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) crosses galaxies to collaborate with rival brainiac Rodney McKay (David Hewlett).

"The two of them are like the intergalactic Hardy Boys figuring out a mystery," jokes executive producer Joseph Mallozzi.

And a Vegas episode finds Lt. Col. John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) in the midst of a CSI-like murder case.

SANCTUARY

NEW - (Premieres this fall, SciFi Channel)

This series, created by Damian Kindler (Stargate SG-1), was originally on the Web, and is the first to shoot almost entirely on green screen (a la "300"). It'll also use the new RED camera technology, which has four times the resolution of high-def TV. Amanda Tapping (also of Stargate) stars as 157-year old Helen Magnus, a doctor from the Victorian era who has now dedicated her life to tracking and protecting nature's strange and scary creatures.

"The public thinks these monsters are figments of the imagination - the stuff of lore and legend - but they're actually quite real," Kindler says. "We've created a world where the modern and the old collide. We'll do Jack the Ripper and some incredible mutant threat all in the same episode." - ML

James Marsters - Total SciFi: Interview

From Total SciFi:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Posted on Thursday 10 July 2008

James Marsters: “You guys like watching me getting humiliated…”

James Marsters has been a really busy guy lately. He’s returned to Smallville as Brainiac, taken on the role of Piccolo in the upcoming big screen version of Dragonball, had a recurring role on Torchwood, had a cameo as real-life serial killer Ted Bundy in the TV miniseries The Green River Killer and played a number of concerts in support of his new album, Like a Waterfall. Talking with the audience at Creation Entertainment’s Grand Slam convention in Burbank, California, Marsters talked about his latest projects and looked back at his time on Buffy.

How did you feel about not being a Big Bad on Buffy?

I was really, really, really mad about not being a Big Bad. [Marsters found out that as a regular, Spike was supposed to be pathetic.] But you guys like watching me get humiliated. I decided to suffer as beautifully as I could, with dignity.

How did you feel about the end of Buffy as a series?

The end of that show was not about Spike, it was about the Potentials. I would have liked the Potentials not to have been on the show. Lovely women, but I would have liked [Spike] to have chosen to sacrifice himself.

David Boreanaz - Angel - Video: 'Expecting'

At Shore Leave, a sci-fi mind-meld

Everything out of this world will be in Hunt Valley this weekend at the annual convention

By Jennifer Choi | Sun reporter

July 10, 2008

Michael Schilling is tired of the bum rap sci-fi convention-goers have gotten from "Mundanes," those who think the fandom is only comprised of one type of human.

"On TV, they don't show the eloquent doctors or lawyers who attend these conventions," said Schilling, a member of the Star Trek Association of Towson. "They only show the pointy-eared guy."

Marilyn Mann, programming coordinator for Shore Leave, a local, fan-run science-fiction convention set for this weekend, said such events are similar to others that draw like-minded, if disparate, crowds: "On some levels, it's the same reason someone goes to a football game. It's fun to share something that you're interested in with other people that are excited by the same thing."

Shore Leave 30, which celebrates the convention's 30th anniversary, runs tomorrow through Sunday at the Marriott Hunt Valley Inn. Supporters say, as in past years, this year's event will be an educational, family-friendly and entertaining event that attracts people from all walks of life.

**snippage**

[George] Takei and fellow Heroes star McDowell share the celebrity roster with several other sci-fi thespians. The lineup includes veteran stage, film and TV actor William Morgan Sheppard, who has appeared in numerous Star Trek series; his son Mark Sheppard of Battlestar Galactica and Bionic Woman; Jewel Staite, David Hewlett and
his sister Kate Hewlett, all of Stargate: Atlantis.

Kate Hewlett believes that sci-fi draws so many people in because it resonates with them on numerous levels.

"It's a great way to escape. But it's not just entertaining," she said. "It can also be political, relevant and moving."

Shore Leave 30 runs tomorrow through Sunday. Hours are noon tomorrow-1 a.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. Saturday-3 a.m. Sunday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Three-day admission is $75. One-day admission is $20 for tomorrow, $50 for Saturday and $40 for Sunday; $15 for children 5-12; free for children younger than 5. The hotel is at 245 Shawan Road, Hunt Valley. Stargate Atlantis - Alex Levine (Script Coordinator) Blog Update for Season Five

From the SciFi Channel's Stargate Atlantis site, Alex Levine's (the script coordinator for Stargate Atlantis) first blog update for season five:

(Please follow the link for the complete blog update.)

Fifth Time's the Charm

Welcome back, loyal Stargate fans, to the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis. Who'd have thunk it? Me. I thought it would happen. But then again, I pick the Broncos to win the Super Bowl every year, so maybe it's just blind luck. In any case, we're well on our way to our 100th episode, and it's going to be an exciting season of Stargate.

**snippage**

Lastly, I chatted with Martin Q. Gero, who penned the season premiere you'll see this Friday, entitled "Search and Rescue." He said this episode is jam-packed, it being basically the culmination of 10 previous episodes of story. It also contains his favourite McKay/Teyla scene of all time. He mentioned that the art department and
construction crew did a masterful job turning one of our standing sets into a massive debris field. And lastly, he noted this is the first season premiere that Andy Mikita has directed, and as you might have guessed, he knocked it out of the park.

Also, get ready for the release of Stargate Continuum in late July!
